Rookie Lemieux’s Hustle Turns On Canucks’ Coach
VANCOUVER— When a club has lost eight out of its last nine games and has given up 45 goals in the process, the coach tends to search desperately for silver linings. Hal Laycoe of the Vancouver Canucks thinks he’s found one. Even while his club is taking its lumps in its second year of operation in the National Hockey League, Laycoe can wax poetic about the performance of his newest and smallest player, centre Richard Lemieux. “I just love sending him out there,” Laycoe smiles. “I get a real charge just watching him play.” Lemieux joined the Canucks from their American Hockey League farm club in Rochester early in January. Kessell, Boyer Spring Bears Out Of Slump
HERSHEY— Rick Kessell, the most consistent scorer of late for the Hershey Bears, brought the club’s recent tailspin to an abrupt halt along with the aid of veteran center Wally Boyer. The Bears had just gone through a seven game streak without a win, losing four and tieing three, but at Providence on Feb. 18, Kessell and Boyer combined for three goals in a 5-3 victory. The 22-year-old Kessell, property of the Pittsburgh Penguins, never lost the scoring touch through the prolonged lump. He connected for eight goals and aided in six others for 14 points. Kessell, the Bears top sniper with 23 goals, is now the team’s fifth leading scorer with 36 points. He has four game winning markers.
