Surprising Americans Grab Silver
SAPPORO— Any time a fourth-ranked world hockey power can rise up and skate off with an Olympic silver medal, it has to overshadow anything else in the Winter hockey extrava-ganza. It happened this year at the 1972 Winter Olympic Games here where the odds-on-favorites, the Russians, dominated the competition to win the gold medal again. But the underdog Americans came along to steal the limelight by grabbing the silver out of the clutches of two countries that both ranked higher—Czechoslovakia and Sweden. The U.S.A, team, sparked by the excellent goaltending of Mike Curran, a 27-year-old veteran of the United States Hockey League, unexpectedly went home with the second place silver in their pockets despite finishing in a two-way deadlock with Czechoslovakia. By virtue of an early stunning 5-1 upset of the Czechs, in which…

DOWN EAST
Clarkson, Dartmouth Pull Double Upset On Cornell Historians of Eastern college hockey went scurrying for their record books a couple of times during the first week in February, as two whopping upsets over Cornell, 4-2 by Clarkson and 3-2 in overtime by Dartmouth respectively, stunned fans from Canton to Providence. Clarkson’s win over the Big Red came on Lynah Rink ice, the first time Cornell has lost at home to an Eastern club since 1967 when Yale beat them 4-3 in overtime. Last year’s 7-2 loss to the U.S. Nationals didn’t count in the home ice streak. In the overall series between the two clubs, the Golden Knights have a 15-5-2 edge over Red, the widest spread of any of their regular competitors. Looks like someone has the Ithacans’ number. “It was a…

Lack Of 20-Goal Scorers Holding Americans Down
ROCHESTER— It used to be that 20 goals was a target figure for most forwards during a season. But changes in the style of play have raised that figure to 30 and 35 for a player to have a successful season. The Rochester Americans, however, seem to be operating under the old system. As the Amarks struggled into February, prospects of a single 30-goal scorer on their squad were so remote as to not even be worth talking about. In fact, 20-goal men are going to be few and far between for the 1971-72 Rochester Americans unless there is a dramatic upswing in goal production for the final two months of the season. Through the first 49 games of their schedule, the Amerks didn’t even have a player with 15 goals! At the same time,…
