Tulsa Jolted With Swenson Out A Month
TULSA— The Oilers broke even in two road starts, but suffered a tremendous jolt when ace center Cal Swenson was lost for a month with a broken bone in the lower part of his back. The injury came Feb. 4 after he had scored two goals in the 5-2 triumph at Kansas City. Cal tried to play in Omaha the next night, but had to give it up, and watched the Oilers suffer a 4-2 setback. “It’s a blow,” fretted Tulsa general manager Ray Miron, as he searched frantically for a replacement. “Even if we can find someone to put a uniform on, there’s no way we can replace Cal’s scoring and playmaking ability. “It’s a terrible blow to Cal, too. He was right in the thick of the fight for the league scoring…

LOUIS— When the number of injured St. Louis defensemen reached four, the name on the lips of many Blues’s fans was Barclay Plager. The fans knew that the man to hold the defense together in that time of crisis would be the seemingly in-destructible Plager. John Arbour was sidelined with a hand injury, and Bob Plager, Bare’s brother, went out with a cracked rib at the same time. Carl Brewer was already out of action with a knee injury, and Noel Picard was starting his third month of recuperation from…
Hawks, Knights Coming Back Strong
NIAGARA FALLS— While the power-packed Toronto Marlboros and the surprising Oshawa Generals continue to wage a dog-eat-dog fight for pennant honors in the Major “A” OHA hockey circuit, two of the hottest clubs in the ten-team loop since the midway mark of the season may be found down in the lower reaches of the league. Eastern Canada Memorial Cup finalists just last season before owner and manager Fred Muller broke off the series with Quebec City Remparts because he feared for the safety of his players, the St. Catharines Black Hawks of coach Frank Milne were generally given short shrift by the pre-season experts this year. Most had the Hawks battling the Hamilton Red Wings for the loop cellar this time around. For much of the season, the Hawks were in danger of…
