Lack Of 20-Goal Scorers Holding Americans Down
ROCHESTER— It used to be that 20 goals was a target figure for most forwards during a season. But changes in the style of play have raised that figure to 30 and 35 for a player to have a successful season. The Rochester Americans, however, seem to be operating under the old system. As the Amarks struggled into February, prospects of a single 30-goal scorer on their squad were so remote as to not even be worth talking about. In fact, 20-goal men are going to be few and far between for the 1971-72 Rochester Americans unless there is a dramatic upswing in goal production for the final two months of the season. Through the first 49 games of their schedule, the Amerks didn’t even have a player with 15 goals! At the same time,…

Tulsa Jolted With Swenson Out A Month
TULSA— The Oilers broke even in two road starts, but suffered a tremendous jolt when ace center Cal Swenson was lost for a month with a broken bone in the lower part of his back. The injury came Feb. 4 after he had scored two goals in the 5-2 triumph at Kansas City. Cal tried to play in Omaha the next night, but had to give it up, and watched the Oilers suffer a 4-2 setback. “It’s a blow,” fretted Tulsa general manager Ray Miron, as he searched frantically for a replacement. “Even if we can find someone to put a uniform on, there’s no way we can replace Cal’s scoring and playmaking ability. “It’s a terrible blow to Cal, too. He was right in the thick of the fight for the league scoring…

Kings Struggle To Make It With Hot And Cold Club
LOS ANGELES— Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. The Kings have been bad for a long time. Lately, they have been good. Unfortunately, they got unlucky at the same time. Through their 55th game of the season, through the first week of February, they had their hottest streak of the season going. They were undefeated in six straight games with three victories and three ties and had lost only three of their last 12 games over a four-week period. But in their 54th game they lost for the season their regular goaltender Rogatien Vachon with a knee injury and this will hurt them just when coach Fred Glover has them going good. The streak started with consecutive l-l ties against established teams on the road in Toronto and Boston. The Kings…
