Rampaging Hawks Bursting With Top Playmakers

DALLAS— You can get quite an argument from Dallas Black Hawk fans as to who is the best playmaker for their Central Hockey League leaders. Coach Bobby Kromm won’t be trapped into that debate. “All I can say is we have so many good playmakers, the opposition can’t afford to key on any one of our lines. If they do. another line will do the da mage. “In center ice. we’ve got Bob Sicinski. Dave Hudson. J.P. Leblanc. Dan Spring, and Larry Romanchych. They’re all playing great. We’ve moved Romanchych to right wing, because we feel he’s better there.” When Hudson came back after a long groin injury absence, he was put at left wing. Spring, the rookie draftee from Edmonton, was beginning to live up to his earlier promise. But one of the…

Player Of The Week

Becoming the top performer of the week is getting to be old hot for Tulsa’s Cal Swenson, but the blond ace continues to turn the Central League inside out with his scoring heroics. Swenson broke out for his second hat trick of the season to down Fort Worth 6-0 and had the tieing goal and an assist in the Oilers’ dramatic 3-2 upset of pace-setting Dallas. Crozier Replaces Stricken Imlach By Calling It “Mission Of Help”

BUFFALO— Joe Crozier embarked on a selfdescribed “mission of help for the best friend I have in the world” when he assumed the coaching duties with the Buffalo Sabres. The 48-year-old Crozier and Fred Hunt, the Sabres’ assistant general manager, were designated to take over for Punch Imlach, who was confined to the intensive care unit of Buffalo’s Deaconess Hospital after suffering a heart attack. Crozier and Hunt, 54-year-old longtime hockey figure here, will share Imlach’s portfolio as coach and general manager until the Sabres’ leader is ready to return. In a prepared statement. Seymour H. Knox 111, the Sabres’ chairman of the board and president, said “Crozier will act as coach and Hunt as general manager until Punch is able to resume those duties.” One of the most successful coaches in the history of…

Bears Head Back To Top

HERSHEY— Goalie Jim Rutherford didn’t stay around long enough to send out his laundry. The 22-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins-owned player joined the Hershey Bears Dec. 28 and eight days later he was returned to Pittsburgh after backstopping Hershey to three straight wins. Rutherford was expected to be with Hershey for the balance of the season, but Roy Edwards suddenly left the Pittsburgh club and headed for home, forcing the sudden recall of Rutherford. A few days after Rutherford departed, rookie Cam Newton stepped between the pipes and backstopped Hershey to a 3-2 win in Cleveland. It was his first start since Dec. 26. Newton and veteran Andre Gill, who boasts one of leagues best averages at 2.53, in all probability will continue to alternate at the job, an assignment they had prior to Rutherford’s arrival on…
