Guidolin Eyes Big Bead Trip
BOSTON— ‘‘It’s going to be a long haul, but we’re looking forward to it. It’ll be a real test for us.” That’s how Braves’ coach Bep Guidolin views his team’s upcoming eight game, two-week road swing, which opened at Nova Scotia on Dec. 26 and winds up Jan. 9 at Tidewater. “We want to develop the same confidence on the road that we have on our own ice,” explained Bep. “We’ve been unbeatable at home, but we’ve had our troubles on the road despite our winning record.” Most coaches are satisfied to bat .500 on the road. Not so Guidolin. “Oh, I can’t say I’d be disappointed if we split the eight games,” he continued. “After all, eight road games in two weeks is a tough order for any team. “I think we can do better…

Lowly Flyers Delight In Knocking Off Habs
PHILADELPHIA— Pardon the blasphemy, but the Flyers wish they played half their schedule against the Montreal Canadiens this season. They can’t be blamed for entertaining such outrageous thoughts because the Canadiens, the defending Stanley Cup champions, are the only team the Flyers have played consistently well against so far. They’ve collected two victories and a tie in three games. In fact, the Canadiens had lost only four times in their first 27 games and half those losses were to the Flyers. “I just can’t explain why we play so well against Montreal,” said Flyers’ coach Fred Shero. “It just seems we come up with a real fine team effort and this is what does it every time”. Lack of cohesion as a complete unit has been the Flyers’ sore spot in this, Shero’s baptismal campaign…

Penguins’ Kelly Happy With Three Goalkeeper System
PITTSBURGH— Red Kelly has been experimenting with a three-goalie system this year and as far as the Penguin coach is concerned it’s a fine idea. It wasn’t something Kelly planned on doing, but circumstances forced him into it. At training camp all indications pointed to Kelly going with two goalies in the regular season—veterans Les Binkley and Roy Edwards. Second-year man Jim Rutherford was getting a good look, but few expected him to stick with the big team. Edwards, however, walked out on the Penguins less than a week before the season began, announcing he needed more time to decide whether he wanted to continue playing hockey. With Edwards back home in Ontario, Rutherford, naturally, stayed on with the Penguins. His early play was spectacular, so when Edwards eventually returned to the Penguins, Rutherford could…
