Jones On Beam A gam But Bucks Concerned
PORTLAND— Art Jones was swinging merrily along in pursuit of his fifth consecutive Western Hockey League scoring title. He had points in all of the Portland Buckaroos’ first seven games for a total of four goals, 15 points. But coach Gordon Fash-oway was concerned about his club. The Buckaroos have been outshot badly in their last five games. The string ran through 13 consecutive periods until the Buckaroos outshot the crippled Phoenix Roadrunners 12-10 and 11-10 in the final two periods of a 7-4 victory. The Runners still held a 38-36 margin on the game. Opponents averaged 39.8 shots per game against Portland. The Buckaroos were outshot 34-22 by San Diego in Portland. 34-23 by the Road-runners in Phoenix. 49-22 by the Gulls at San Diego and 46-34 by Salt Lake at Portland. Mike…
Record AHL Crowd Of 13,964 Watches Boston Keep Top Spot
BOSTON— The Braves emerged from a brutal four game in five night trek with their precarious hold on first place still intact, although Springfield was right on their heels. A home and home series with the Kings wound up in a split, and resulted in the Braves’ first loss of the campaign. In Boston, the two teams went at it hammer and tong for 57 minutes of exciting hockey until Don Tannahill’s blistering slap shot sealed a 5-4 verdict for the Braves. At Springfield, the Braves did well to keep it respectable. The 2-0 loss saw the Braves spend a total of 50 minutes in the penalty box, 37 in the final period when they were outshot 27-4. Only a pair of Wayne Rivers shots eluded goaler Dan Bouchard, who turned back 53…
High Scoring Of PAP Line Gives Pens Shot In Arm
PITTSBURGH— The Penguins, never an explo-sive hockey team, may be on the verge of finding the scoring punch they have so sorely lacked in their five-year existence. The acquisition of center Syl Apps from New York last season was the spark that ignited what promises to be a line of long standing in Pittsburgh. Soon after his arrival Apps was sent out on the ice with rookie left winger Greg Polis and right winger Jean Pronovost. The result was the most exciting combination in Penguin history, but it was shortlived. Polis sat out the last part of the season with mononucleosis. In pre-season camp this year Coach Red Kelly did some ex-perimenting, working Pronovost with fellow French Canadian Rene Robert. Maybe Kelly was trying to work Pronovost with another Frenchman just as he had…
