MONTREAL— TWO veterans of National Hockey League action highlight the early-season individual statistics as both the scoring parade and goaltenders’ average list have a different look to those at the end of last season. Lorne (Gump) Worsley, 42-year-old netminder with Minnesota North Stars, has been keeping pucks out of his net with the same finesse as left winger Frank Mahovlich of Montreal has been putting pucks in enemy goals. Worsley has the best individual goals-against average of any of the 28 goaltenders who have appeared in three or more games. He has been beaten only six times in 300 minutes for a sparkling 1.20 average. HAMILTON— Hamilton Red Wings won their first game and Kitchener Rangers suffered their first defeat as the Ontario Hockey Association Major Junior A standings tightened up. Despite their poor early-season record of only one tie and no wins in their first nine games, Hamilton under new coach Harry Neale had come close to erasing their embarrassing record in the standings including a tight 7-5 setback on home ice to St. Catharines Black Hawks. Five days later the Wings’ frustration ended as they walloped the Hawks 7-5 at Garden City Arena. “One win doesn’t solve all our problems,” said Neale, “but at least it should give the youngsters the confidence they lacked.
