Bellerive Sparks Salt Lake In Upset Win

SALT LAKE CITY— Roger Bellerive couldn’t get to Salt Lake City fast enough. Then, he almost didn’t make it in time. The 27-year-old left wing was sold to the Golden Eagles by the Portland Buckaroos, left immediately to join his new club, had his flight delayed by fog and didn’t arrive until three hours before the Eagles played their second game. The 5-9, 160 pound speedster didn’t waste any time, once he arrived. He broke Billy Inglis loose for the opening goal and scored the second himself on the way to a 4-1 upset of the Phoenix Roadrunners. Bellerive had scored 27 goals in the 1968-69 season and 30 over the next two. “Even sixteen goals last season wasn’t bad,” mused Salt Lake coach Al Rollins. “When they used him. it was on a checking…

Coaching No Security WHEN THE PHILADELPHIA franchise was formed, Bud Poile was named manager. He named Keith Allen his coach and gave Vic Stasiuk a coaching job in the organization. Later Poile was fired, Allen made manager and Stasiuk the coach. After last season Stasiuk was fired and Fred Shero brought in as coach. Poile bounced into Vancouver to put together the new franchise there and hired Laycoe as his new coach although they had not addressed one another amicably for years. A couple of weeks before the present season began, California owner, Charles Finley, was telling me how he regretted saddling coach Freddie Gover…

Foley Admits He’s Under Pressure But He’ll Go All Out For Flyers

PHILADELPHIA— Nobody has to remind Rick Foley that he’s got a double dose of pressure in these, his early days as a member of the Flyers. After all, veteran center Andre Lacroix—for whom he was traded by the Chicago Black Hawks in an even-up swap—was one of the most popular Flyers in their brief history. It is only natural because Lacroix scored goals more consistently than any other Flyers—24, 22 and 20 the past three seasons—and, in fact, is the team’s all-time scoring leader with 170 total points. Foley can’t ever hope to match that, since he’s a rugged defenseman, and goal-scoring and playmaking just aren’t his bag. His forte is playing aggressively, keeping the opposition honest and perhaps being the type of offensive backliner the Flyers insist they’ve desperately needed. Still, there is bound…
