Pittsburgh’s Road Turnabout Puts Pens On Heels Of Hawks

PITTSBURGH— As a road show last season the Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t exactly a boffo smash. To be more exact the Penguins were a dismal flop on the road and the team’s inability to win away from home was the prime reason it dropped from second to sixth place in the standings. This year, however, the Penguins thus far have done a complete turn-about on the road and these successes have gone a long way towards bolstering the confidence the team started to develop in training camp. Four of the Penguins’ first five games were on the road this season and Kelly was openly wary of starting the season with such a trip. But the Penguins responded by taking three of the four road games, including three in a row on the West Coast, after…

Lapointe Versatile For Habs

MONTREAL— If Guy Lapointe weren’t playing hockey, he’d be pounding a beat. The husky, 6’ 185-lb., Hab sophomore had ambitions of joining the Montreal Police Department, and probably would’ve had he not moved quickly along the road to success in hockey. Guy starred for the Junior Canadiens before turning pro in 1968; then did stints with Houston and the Montreal Voyageurs before graduating to the NHL Canadiens on a fulltime basis last season. In that, his rookie year, he unveiled a hard shot to fire 15 goals, and wound up with a total of 44 points while playing the full 78 games. He also racked up 107 minutes in penalties and showed that he wasn’t adverse to being a policeman on ice, when the occasion demanded it. A lefthand shot, Guy normally plays the…

Player’s of the week

In The East Frank Mahovlich is happy in Montreal they say, and the Big M is not doing anything to squelch the rumor. The older of the two Mahovlich brothers, who paced the Canadiens in last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs with a total-points record performance, is off and running again this year and after a hot week that saw him score five goals and add two assists, he is now the league’s ton goal-scorer with nine. The Big M’s scoring outburst couldn’t have come at a better time as far as the Canadiens were concerned as they swept all three of their West Coast games to propel them back into the thick of the Easter Division race. Mahovlich figured in each one of the team’s goals in a 4-2 victory over the Seals, then…
