Suffolk Set As New York Loop Expands

NEW YORK— The Metropolitan Junior Hockey Association has expanded to nine teams for the start of the new hockey season. The league has welcomed the Suffolk Ducks, who will play their home games at the Long Island Arena in Commack, to the Eastern Division. Returning in the East will be last year’s division champion Brooklyn Stars, the Long Island Athletic Club Flyers, Oyster Bay Gulls, and New Hyde Park Arrows. The Western Division will remain intact with the perennial league champion New York Green Leafs, West New York Victorias, Essex Comets, and White Plains Plainsmen slugging it out for top honors. Roberts Ideal Team Leader For Blues

ST. LOUIS— Jim Roberts, the first man picked by the St. Louis Blues in the expansion draft your years ago, has begun his term of duty as the Blues’ third captain in the line of succession. “They’ve loaded a little more on me,” grinned Roberts, a hardworking player who plays defense and on the forward line and is the team’s longstanding penaltykiller. Al Arbour was the Blues’ captain for the first three years of their existence until he became coach at the beginning of last season. Cooke Reassures Pride In Title-Winning AHL Club

SPRINGFIELD— Jack Kent Cooke, owner of the local Kings hockey club, has certainly had his pleasant memories in sports as owner of Los Angeles and Springfield hockey teams, part owner of the Washington Redskins football club, complete boss of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and former owner of the Los Angeles Wolves of the now defunct National Soccer League. The Springfield Kings have given him his greatest satisfaction in sports, since they finished fourth in a special playoff after beating Quebec Aces and went on to win the AHL Calder Cup as champions.
