Ex-CHL Star Gerry Ouellette Retires To Coach In Native New Brunswick
GRAND FALLS— Gerry (Red) Ouellette, a Grand Falls native who toiled with the Omaha Knights of the Central Hockey League during the 1970-71 season, announced his retirement from a 12-year professional hockey career here Friday, Sept. 10. The 32-year-old forward, who placed third in the CHL’s scoring derby last season with 23 goals and league-leading 58 assists, was the property of the AHL’s expansionist Cincinnati Swords at the time of his retirement. During his professional hockey tenure, Ouellette had a career total of 297 goals and 449 assists. The red-haired father of two played 34 games with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League during the 1960-61 season scoring four goals and notching five assists before he was sidelined with appendicitis. Cooke Reassures Pride In Title-Winning AHL Club
SPRINGFIELD— Jack Kent Cooke, owner of the local Kings hockey club, has certainly had his pleasant memories in sports as owner of Los Angeles and Springfield hockey teams, part owner of the Washington Redskins football club, complete boss of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and former owner of the Los Angeles Wolves of the now defunct National Soccer League. The Springfield Kings have given him his greatest satisfaction in sports, since they finished fourth in a special playoff after beating Quebec Aces and went on to win the AHL Calder Cup as champions.
