Habs, Bruins Turn Scotty’s Birthday Party Into Brawl

MONTREAL— Officially, Scotty Bowman was 38 on September 18th. Unofficially, he aged several years in 60 minutes that night as Habs and Boston Bruins clashed in a riotous exhibition tilt before an all-time record crowd in the Montreal Forum. With 18,906 fans looking on, Canadiens pumped seven goals past the combination of Eddie Johnston and Gerry Cheevers in the Boston net, while giving up four to the league champions. Ken Dryden, last spring’s playoff hero, went all the way in the nets for Canadiens. Habs outshot the Bruins by a 36-31 margin. Four of the Canadiens’ goals were against Johnston, who gave way to Cheevers midway through the second period. The newly-formed Hab line of Frank Mahovlich, Guy Lafleur and Yvan Cournoyer paced the winners. They picked dp nine points, with Mahovlich and Cournoyer…
