Rangers Didn’t Need To Hold On To Nevin I would like to straighten out Mr. Bill Libby. Recently he wrote that he is “not quite sure why the Rangers traded Bob Nevin for Bob Rousseau.” He seems to have forgotten that the Rangers have enough right wings with Rod Gilbert, Jack Egers, Bill Fairbairn, Pierre Jarry, Bruce MacGregor and Rousseau. Habs, Bruins Turn Scotty’s Birthday Party Into Brawl
MONTREAL— Officially, Scotty Bowman was 38 on September 18th. Unofficially, he aged several years in 60 minutes that night as Habs and Boston Bruins clashed in a riotous exhibition tilt before an all-time record crowd in the Montreal Forum. With 18,906 fans looking on, Canadiens pumped seven goals past the combination of Eddie Johnston and Gerry Cheevers in the Boston net, while giving up four to the league champions. Ken Dryden, last spring’s playoff hero, went all the way in the nets for Canadiens. Habs outshot the Bruins by a 36-31 margin. Four of the Canadiens’ goals were against Johnston, who gave way to Cheevers midway through the second period. The newly-formed Hab line of Frank Mahovlich, Guy Lafleur and Yvan Cournoyer paced the winners. They picked dp nine points, with Mahovlich and Cournoyer…

North Stars To Again Stress Defense
TWIN CITIES— After attempting a free-wheeling offensive style for the better part of three seasons in the National Hockey League, the Minnesota North Stars switched to a more conservative brand last year and discovered its virtues. Coach Jack Gordon succeeded in implanting his checking-type hockey into his new team in just one season at the helm, and now the stars are convinced that is truly the style for them. To insure a continuation of that type of hockey this season, general manager Wren Blair went out over the summer and acquired a pair of forwards with widespread checking reputations. They were right winger Bob Nevin from New York and center Dennis Hextali from California, and it is quite apparent from training camp that both will play important roles in whatever success the North…
