Coaches Pick Two American Natives; Baltimore Dominates AHL Selections

HARRISBURG — Two American-born skaters, Stan Gilbertson, Hershey Bears’ left winger and Jim Niekamp. Baltimore defenseman, were selected to first team berths on the 19th annual American Hockey League All Star squads selected by coaches for THE HOCKEY NEWS and Patriot-News. Niekamp, a Detroit native, finished the season with the Detroit Red Wings. He was recalled by the National League club after a 46-game stand with the Western Division leading Clippers. Gilbertson, Hershey’s second leading goal sniper with 29 after 63 games, learned to play the sport as a schoolboy in Duluth, Minn. Their selection marked the first time United States-born players were named to the two dream squads. Imlach Pleased With Sabres

BUFFALO — There wasn’t a great deal Punch Imlach could find wrong with the Buffalo Sabres first season in the National Hockey League. The Sabres ultimately wound up with the second best record among the six teams which didn’t make the Stanley Cup playoffs. In addition to the highly unexpected artistic success, the club was a smash success at the box office, with 23 sellouts in 39 home appearances. Twelve of the last 13 games, including the last nine, were sellouts at the 10,429 capacity, long after the club had been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Gilbert Perreault, the No. 1 pick in the amateur draft last June, looked like a cinch to win the rookie award.
