<div class="byline">BY HAL SIGURDSON</div>VANCOUVER &mdash;When you look at Andre Boudrias and realize what an outstanding season he has had with the Vancouver Canucks, you can&rsquo;t help but think hockey is an extremely inexact science.Boudrias has scored 22 goals and 34 assists for the first-year Canucks and almost all season long he&rsquo;s ranked as their leading scorer.He is in addition one of two plus hockey players &mdash; Rosaire Paiement is the other&mdash;on the Vancouver lineup. That is to say he&rsquo;s been on the ice for more goals for than against, no mean feat when you consider the Canucks have given up roughly 90 more goals than they have scored.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-07214/2751050-1-eng-US/f0015-072.jpg" title="f0015-07" width="272" height="436"><figcaption class="caption-body">Andre Boudrias</figcaption></div>Not only that, Boudrias plays on the Vancouver power play, kills penalties and invariably draws the assignment of checking the other team&rsquo;s top center.Watching him harass an opposing defenseman or forward in his own end is rather like watching a water bug zip around a still pond.In fact his defensive skills inspired a local disc jockey to write a song in his honor titled, &ldquo;Superpest.&rdquo;The nickname Superpest is well earned. Boston&rsquo;s Phil Esposito has broken every NHL scoring record in the book, but he&rsquo;s scored only three goals in his six games against Vancouver. Espo is, in fact, a minus hockey player against the Canucks.The man who has checked him is Boudrias.When the Bruins had an off day in Vancouver following a game against the Canucks, Esposito and a few of his Bruin teammates went salmon fishing.When Esposito was getting no action on the end of his line he was heard to grumble, &ldquo;I bet that damn Boudrias is down there.&rdquo;Now, after pointing out the kind of season Boudrias has had, is worth remembering how the Canucks acquired him.He was purchased from the St. Louis Blues after last season&rsquo;s expansion draft in a straight cash transaction. He had not been protected. In other words, not only had he been available to Buffalo at any time during the selection of expansion players, but also to every other NHL I team during the intra-league draft.&ldquo;I think I should get some of &brvbar; the credit,&rdquo; St. Louis general manager Scotty Bowman says. &ldquo;I &acirc;&euro;&cent;had to talk Vancouver into taking him. Buffalo didn&rsquo;t want him.&rdquo;The reason for the low esteem in which Boudrias was held last June was twofold. One strike against him was his size: five- foot-seven and 165 pounds in a league where the players are getting bigger every season. Then there was his 1969-70 scoring record: three goals and 14 assists in 50 games.&ldquo;He just couldn&rsquo;t buy a goal last season,&rdquo; Bowman recalled. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know how often he shot the puck over an empty net.&rdquo;As things have turned out, that miserable year Boudrias had last season is the luckiest thing that has happened to the Canucks. &#9632;

HAWKS’ ESPOSITO MAY GO IT ALONE

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MocLEAN</div>NEW YORK&mdash;In an exuberant mood of cautious optimism, the New York Rangers were preparing for their quarter final Stanley Cup playoff series with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rangerville is happy with the 1970-71 Blueshirts, even if they did finish second to an all time record setting Boston team, but the mood of both the front office and the fans is chemical as far as the playoffs are concerned.&ldquo;Despite our winning five of six from the Maple Leafs during the regular season, I expect a hard fought series,&rdquo; says Emile Francis, the Rangers general manager-coach. &ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t play them from December 5 until March 14 and in that span they straightened out and turned around. The addition of Bob Baun&rsquo; steadied their defense and with Norman Ullman and Dave Keon having fine seasons, the Toronto attack perked up.&rdquo;In regular season encounters, New York won 6-2 on October 17, 3-2 on October 21, 4-2 on November 15 and 1-0 on December 5 before splitting the last two March matches via a 1-0 win on March 14 and a 1-3 loss in Toronto on March 20.The Leafs will go with their usual tight checking two way game, in which they throw the puck into the other team&rsquo;s end, and then try and go in and take it away. New York will stick to their picture passing, hard shooting attack, which features end to end play and a quick break out by a fast skating-mobile defense. Toronto is very well off, indeed, in goal with both Jacques Plante, who owns the best goals against average in the NHL and Bernie Parent, who has a record of success against New York. The Rangers&rsquo; Eddie Giacomin and Gilles Villemure were leading in the race for the Vezina Trophy as this went to bed, so that speaks for itself.Baun has steadied the youthful Leafian rearguard of Jim Dorey, Mike Pelyk, Jim McKenny, Rick Ley, Brian Glennie and Brad Seiwood. The Rangers are set with six solid rearguards in Brad Park and Rod Seiling, just returned from knee injuries, plus Jimmy Neilson, Dale Rolfe, Larry Brown and the veteran Tim Horton.Up front New York sets up with Walt Tkaczuk, Dave Balon and Bob Nevin on one trio, Jean Ratelle, Vic Hadfield and Rod Gilbert on another with Peter Stemkowski, Ted Irvine and Bruce MacGregor working the so called checking line. Penalty killers de luxe are Glen Sather and Ron Stewart.In late season action, the Rangers sagged a bit after going twelve games without a loss and dropped three straight to Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal during the third week of March. The fate of the Rangers in the playoffs probably lies with their centers. If Ratelle and Tkaczuk can turn on at the right time, New York should get past Toronto in about six games. A study of previous. Stanley Cup winners usually reveals a center as being the chief catalyst in any winning season. Keon led the Leafs to the 1966-67 Cup. winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in the process and Jean Beliveau has made a habit of leading Montreal Cup triumphs. Only Bobby Orr broke the spell last season with Boston, and he had a mighty fine helper in center Phil Esposito.The Leafian centers, Keon and Ullman both have thirty or more goals. They have talented assistants in wingers Paul Henderson, also a thirty goal man and the underrated Ron Ellis. Perhaps the Stemkowski line could handle one of the Leafs big centers, which would leave it up to the Ratelle or Tkaczuk line to outscore the other, however the matchups work out. Giving Toronto a dose of ex-leaf Stemkowski would be justice triumphing, as Toronto GM Jim Gregory developed Peter.A hot spell by Ratelle in the playoffs probably would assure the result for the Rangers. Jean, after three straight 32 goal seasons, may not hit thirty tallies for 1970-71. Perhaps he has saved a few for the playoffs, when they seemingly count for more.After four straight seasons of elimination in the opening round. New York fans and the Rangers thurst for advancement in the playo fs. <div class="byline">BY TOM MONAHAN</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01660/2749873-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg" title="f0003-01" width="258" height="418"><figcaption class="caption-body">Tom Johnson</figcaption></div>BOSTON &mdash;The worst of the best was over for the powerful Bruins two weeks ago when they clinched the Prince of Wales Trophy as the top team in the East Division of the National Hockey League.Now they could look forward to the defense of the Stanley cup and as coach Tom Johnston contemplated the conclusion of his first season on the bench, he said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s easier to win the Stanley Cup than it is to win that Prince of Wales Trophy.&rdquo;Johnson was not snickering up his sleeve at the rest of the NHL. Nor was he predicting the Bruins would have an easy time waltzing through a playoff schedule that figures to be four-of-seven against Montreal followed by a same match against the Chicago-Minnesota winner in the West.The New York-Toronto winner in the East would play the St. Louis-Philadelphia winner in the West.On paper this figures down to a Boston &mdash; New York final and Johnson, above anyone else, is not willing tbet an extinct shilling this will come about.&ldquo;All I mean is that I think it is tougher to play 78 games and finish on top than play a set of short series.&rdquo;On a time basis alone, Johnson&rsquo;s thinking is proved. It took the Bruins 31 years to bring the first place division title to Boston. This is a year longer than it took them to regain the Stanley Cup.&ldquo;The main thing we have to concern ourselves with now is that we do not have a letdown,&rdquo; said Johnson.&ldquo;We had a few dull spots during the season but always in back of our mind was that we wanted to surpass last year by finishing No. 1.&ldquo;We just missed on it and we knew how easy it was to miss out again and we kept the dull spots to a minimum.&ldquo;Now when you start thinking and talking about Stanley Cup you are talking about three short seasons in a row and that&rsquo;s why I think it is easier for a team to think about that and to know what one defeat can mean.&ldquo;You are thinking of only one opponent at a time and it is easier i that respect.&rdquo;And clinching the division title with two weeks to spare also gives the Bruins time to recuperate and reorganize their mental capacity:Veteran goalie Eddie Johnston brought out when he said,&ldquo;We are getting help preparing for the playoffs right away. The schedule helps us.&ldquo;The big thing is to tighten up defensively for the playoffs. We can&rsquo;t be as lax as we were in some of our late season games.Ken Hodge was another of the Bruins who talked in this vein.&ldquo;Now that we&rsquo;ve got our division tile, all the records are set or accomplished for the main purpose. Johnson Cautions Bruins On Letdown

Expansion this season from 12 to 14 teams and the subsequent realignment of clubs competing in the two divisions were preparatory steps to permit the crossover. Prior to the beginning of this season Chicago was moved from the East to the West Division, and the two new franchises &mdash; one in Buffalo and other in Vancouver &mdash; became members of the established East Division.Ron Andrews, statistician for the NHL stated. &ldquo;Many people are under the wrong assumption that the actual interlocking competition will take place throughout all the playoff series. Actually, the crossover takes place in the semi-finals series only.&rdquo;In quarter-final playdowns, first and third place finishers in the East will comprise series &ldquo;A&rdquo; and second and fourth place finishers will comprise series &ldquo;B&rdquo;. Similarly, in the West division, series &ldquo;C&rdquo; will be first versus third and series &ldquo;D&rdquo; will be second versus fourth.The inter-division or crossover competition will be enacted during the &lsquo;semi-final series&rsquo;. Series &ldquo;E&rdquo; will comprise the winner of series &ldquo;A" in the East and the winner of series &ldquo;D" in the West. And series &ldquo;F&rdquo; will pit the winner of series &ldquo;B&rdquo; in the East against the winner of series &ldquo;C&rdquo; in the West.Series &ldquo;G&rdquo;, will be the Stanley Cup final and the winner of series &ldquo;E&rdquo; will play the winner of series &ldquo;F&rdquo;.All series will be the best four of seven games.The possibility could arise whereby the Stanley Cup final could be an All-East series, but in actuality the final should be an East-West battle. Chances are remote, at least for this year, that there will be an All-West final.The quarter-final playoffs will include the following competitions: series "A" Boston versus Montreal, series &ldquo;B&rdquo; New York versus Toronto, series &ldquo;C&rdquo; Chicago versus Minnesota and series &ldquo;D&rdquo; St. Louis versus Philadelphia.With respect to their final standings in regular season play Boston, New York, Chicago and St. Louis will open their series at home playing on Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday April 8.The series will then shift to Montreal, Toronto, Minnesota and Philadelphia for games on Saturday April 10 and Sunday April 11.Thereafter all games will be scheduled for the following Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and/or Sunday if necessary depending on which teams win four games first over their respective opponents.One thing for sure, the 1970-71 Stanley Cup Playoffs will be a very exciting series, and the Cup final will not be an anticlimax to the semi-finals as it has been the past three seasons. &#9632;

<h2>Check NHL Goalers With More Penalties</h2>I think that the NHL should do something about some of the taetics many teams use when the pressure is on them. One of the things that I think should not be allowed is the tactic of purposefully shooting the puck into the stands. I think that more penalties should be assessed to goaltenders who roam far out of the goal crease to grab the puck and stop the play.Another thing which I do not like is the rule that says that a team can not be called for icing when they are a man short, many teams do not even try to move the puck out of their zone when they are a man short, all they do is shoot the puck down the ice and wait for the other team to bring the puck down the ice and I can not think of anything duller than watching a player skate down the ice after the puck.Also I do not like seeing players deliberately falling on the puck without even having been touched by another player.ROSS MOORE,Edmonton, Alta.<h2>Bobby Hull Puts Team Before Personal Scoring</h2>I am writing in reply to an article published in the March 5, edition of the Fan Forum column about what Phillip Foreman of St. Stephen, N.B. wrote about Bobby Hull criticizing him about his hockey ability.Sure Bobby hasn&rsquo;t won many cups for the Hawks, but he&rsquo;s not like other super stars. He has been around the league too long to be lost in this situation. How can Detroit be anything but in deeper waters with his absence. He gave much to the league over his 32 years as player, coach and general manager. It would stop making a farce of the draft.2&mdash;Icing the puck should be an automatic whistle before the puck goes all the way down the ice when it is obvious to officials. <div class="byline">BY PAT CURRAN</div>MONTREAL&mdash;Thieves took advantage of the situation to break into his home in suburban Longueuil but it would have taken something much more serious to dampen the spirit of Jean Beliveau Night.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01751/2750135-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="260" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jean Beliveau</figcaption></div>Prior to taking part in a 5-3 victory over Phi la del phia, the elegant Captain of the Canadiens received a tribute unprecedented in Montreal sports history.Big Jean&rsquo;s wishes when the night was planned &mdash; even before he scored his 500th NHL goal in mid-February &mdash; were that he would get only a few selective gifts of appreciation for his 18 great seasons with the Canadiens. All monetary gifts were to be funnelled into a special fund to help underprivileged children across the country.And that&rsquo;s how it was when Beliveau, accompanied by his wife Elise and their 13-year-old daughter Helene stepped on the red carpet to the cheers of 17,154 fans at the Forum.Henri Richard, Jean&rsquo;s tern-mate for 15 years, presented him with a silver bowl on behalf of the Canadiens President J. David Molson unveiled a gold and silver mounting of the puck Beliveau had slipped by Minnesota&rsquo;s Gilles Gilbert for his 500th goal.A bronze model of that milestone goal was presented by Danny Gallivan on behalf of the sponsors of Hockey Night in Canada. And Ed Van Impe. Philadelphia captain, handed him a silver tray engraved with the names of the Flyers players.Later Beliveau received other gifts, like plane trips to Paris, Munich and the Caribbean; an ash tray made of the plaster cast Jean wore when he broke his leg some years ago; and a set of handmade pipes &ldquo;for all the great stories&rdquo; from the Montreal Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers&rsquo; Association.But the highlight of the ceremonies came when three of Jean&rsquo;s former coaches &mdash; Rollie Hebert (Victoriaville), Punch Imlach (Quebec) and Toe Blake (Canadiens) &mdash; carried out a three-by-seven foot mountin of a cheque, representing donations to the Jean Beliveau Fund.Beliveau was deeply moved by the amount while the crowd broke into thunderous ovation. The total just before game time, with donations still coming in, was $155,855.Three youngsters, all wearing green and white No. 4 jerseys, carried the &ldquo;cheque&rdquo; around the rink.&ldquo;This is the highest and best thing that could happen to any man,&rdquo; said Jean, speaking in both French and English. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the greatest mark of esteem you could have given me.&ldquo;I have had occasion to travel many times across this great country from St. Johns, Newfoundland to Victoria. And the warmth with which I was received everywhere by Canadians, is something I will never forget. This night is the greatest thing that will ever happen to me in my life. I have always wanted to find a way to repay all those people and the Jean Beliveau Fund will enable me to say thanks to some of those badly in need of help.&rdquo;Zotique Lesperance, Beliveau&rsquo;s close friend who was chairman of the Night, said that donations from quarter to thousands had been received from Jean&rsquo;s admirers all across Canada. He expected the $155,855 figure to be passed greatly and voiced hope the Fund would become a permanent thing.&ldquo;We had a good product to sell and the public responded very generously.&rdquo;Even the thieves who broke into Big Jean&rsquo;s home were thoughtful. They grabbed only about $500 in cash and respected his trophies from a brilliant hockey career. &#9632;

<div class="byline">&#x2014;By Bill Libby</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-01737/2750450-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="273" height="348"></div><h2>A Tale Of Two Goalers</h2>AS THE FOURTH SEASON for the Los Angeles Kings moved to a somewhat disappointing conclusion, the general feeling was that this was a much-improved team which missed the playoffs primarily through ineffective goal-tending. Goal-tenders always bear the brunt of any blame in this game and the two who shared the nets in Los Angeles this season are no exceptions.It is a complicated problem, however, targetting one or two players for a team&rsquo;s failures, and a sad one, criticizing two men. The record is clear: After 69 games, DeJordy had a 3.85 goals-against average and a 17-29-10 won, lost and tied mark, while Norris was 4.00 and 3-7-2. The team had scored a club-record 206 goals, best of all expansionists, but had permitted 270, second worst in the NHL.Team defense in front of the goalers was not the best, of course, not by a long way.Perhaps the individual problems of the pair can be dramatically pin-pointed in back-to-back home games numbers 68 and 69 in mid-March.Facing Minnesota, DeJordy was awful. He did little more than wave pucks past, permitted five goals in the first 10 minutes &ldquo;I knew all day I didn&rsquo;t have it. I just didn&rsquo;t feel right. In practice, I didn&rsquo;t get a glove on a puck,&rdquo; he said.Hadn&rsquo;t be psyched himself out? Could he possibly have played well believing he wouldn&rsquo;t? &ldquo;No, I always know when I&rsquo;m going to be bad and there&rsquo;s no way I can change it&rdquo; he said. Why, then, doesn&rsquo;t he tell the coach before the game? &ldquo;A player,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;is afraid of &lsquo;begging off,&rsquo; a getting a reputation for not wanting to play.&rdquo;How did he feel during the deluge? &ldquo;Like crawling in a hole, but there was no place to hide,&rdquo; he said. Did he blame poor support? &ldquo;No. I know when I&rsquo;m mainly to blame,&rdquo; he said. Could he hear the fans booing him? &ldquo;You can&rsquo;t help but hear them, but fans are tougher, meaner and more demanding in other cities,&rdquo; he said.Did he want out? &ldquo;Everyone is used to baseball pitchers having bad games and being relieved, but they&rsquo;re not used to it with hockey goalers yet. It&rsquo;s still humiliating. But when Larry Regan sent Jack Norris out to relieve me, I felt relieved, and when I got to the bench I was glad to be there, like I could hide there a little,&rdquo; he said.When he got to the bench, he threw his stick, gloves and mask down. Who was he angry at? &ldquo;At myself, not Regan More than any other player, a goaler feels like he can let the team down and there&rsquo;s no shirking the responsibility,&rdquo; DeJordy said, &ldquo;even though he&rsquo;s often at the mercy of the support he gets or doesn&rsquo;t get. This time, it was me.&rdquo;DeJordy started 47 of the team&rsquo;s first 58 games. This was the sixth time he had been relieved. Backup goaler Norris started only 11 games, had to be relieved only once. He allowed only two more goals the last 2&frac12; periods of this one as L.A. lost, 7-2. &ldquo;You dread going in at a time like that,&rdquo; Norris said. &ldquo;You can&rsquo;t win. You work for nothing. You know if you give up much, the fans will be all over you. But you have to make the most of your chances when you don&rsquo;t get many.&rdquo;<h2>A Rare Opportunity&hellip;</h2>TWO NIGHTS LATER, NORRIS started his 12th game and stopped Chicago, 32. winning &ldquo;first star of the game&rdquo; honors. He had gone seven games without a start. Earlier this season, he went five games twice, six games twice, 11 games once and 13 games once without starts. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s like a lost season for me. I haven&rsquo;t played enough to feel responsible for my record, I&rsquo;ve never started more than two games in a row,&rdquo; Norris said.He has had bad games. &ldquo;When you play as irregularly as I have, it&rsquo;s hard to be good. You press when you go in,&rdquo; he said. How did it feel to be the hero of one, finally, surrounded by reporters afterwards? &ldquo;It felt good. Everyone wants to do well and get attention for it. It&rsquo;s hard to endure life in sports as a nobody. I&rsquo;ve ridden a lot of benches and watched a lot of games like a spectator this season,&rdquo; said Norris.He is 28, a veteran minor-leaguer who had some dismal seasons with the dismal old minor-league L.A. Blades but was a second All Star in the American League last season. He had 33 games in the NHL with Boston and Chicago before coming to L.A. this season and he is not expected to be brought back next season.&ldquo;Most of the old Blades were out here to soak up sunshine&rdquo;, Norris said. &ldquo;No goaler had a chance with them. I&rsquo;ve never had a real chance in the NHL. I didn&rsquo;t have a real chance this year. Maybe I&rsquo;m not good enough, but who knows? I don&rsquo;t think Regan really knows. I&rsquo;m not sure I do. I think I am. So you keep hoping for a year when you&rsquo;ll get a real chance.&ldquo;I have hopes for next year, here or elsewhere. If I knew it would be another year like this one though, I&rsquo;d give it up. The thing is, you never know. If I&rsquo;m returned to the minors after no more major league chance than I&rsquo;ve had this year, I&rsquo;d be very depressed,&rdquo; he said.We tried on his mask. It was wet. An hour after the game, it still was soaked with sweat. I felt I could see just fine with it on. He was just dressing while the last of the other players, DeJordy, was leaving. DeJordy is 32 and has kicked around the majors and minors. He shared the Vezina Trophy with Glenn Hall in Chicago four seasons back, but has been declining a little bit every season since and was swapped to L.A. late last season. &ldquo;You go on and on, just doing the best you can,&rdquo; he said wistfully.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a hard season,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m a little tired. In hockey today, you have to have two goalers sharing the nets. Few feel they want to play all the games any more. It&rsquo; too tough and hurts your record. I feel for Norris. I&rsquo;ve had years when I sat and wasted away. We&rsquo;re friends. And all goalers share sympathy for each other. We know what our job is like. Our wives even sit together and sympathize with one another.&rdquo;Did his wife sympathize with him after his bad game? <div class="byline">BY ED CONRAD</div>PHILADELPHIA&mdash;It has taken an injury to Doug Favell for Bruce Gamble to prove that he was more than just another body obtained in the trade for Bernie Parent.Until Favell suffered a concussion in a fall on the ice during a practice, Gamble had spent most of his time sitting on the bench and watching. That status had come about because of Favel&rsquo;s consistently fine play since the trade, and also because Gamble&rsquo;s first three starts as a Flyer had ended in one-sided losses, despite a respectable job from the veteran goalie.Favell&rsquo;s injury had occurred the day before the Flyers&rsquo; quick return match with the New York Rangers, who had bombed Gamble less than a week before in Madison Square Garden. Doug was ticketed to start until the peculiar mishap.This time, Gamble came out on top while registering a 3-1 victory. Bruce contributed numerous outstanding saves as the Flyers won a game important to their playoff future.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-03533/2750481-1-eng-US/f0008-032.jpg" title="f0008-03" width="259" height="369"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bruce Gamble</figcaption></div>Two nights later in Boston Garden, Gamble turned out to be shooting target for the Boston Bruins &mdash; who isn&rsquo;t? &mdash; but kept the Flyers in the game until the very end. However, he fob lowed with another fine job against the Toronto Maple Leafs back on home ice, a 1-1 tie.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s nice to have things turn around for me as they did.&rdquo; said Gamble. &ldquo;You learn quick in this game that you&rsquo;re going to have your good days and your bad ones, and you&rsquo;ve got to accept them.&rdquo;This advice came in handy when the Flyers&rsquo; poor defense doomed Gamble to a goals-against average of 5.20 in his first three contests. Perhaps as good as any reason for this situation is that he and the defensive unit weren&rsquo;t complimenting each other from the start.Therefore it seemed the opposition was getting numerous rebound opportunities when the puck wasn&rsquo;t being cleared properly.Gamble accepted the adverse publicity, nevertheless, but more than paid for it when Favell fell on the ice during practice and suffered a concussion, which resulted in a partial loss of memory.&ldquo;I still don&rsquo;t remember what happened&rdquo;, said Doug. &ldquo;In fact, I can&rsquo;t even recall going to the Spectrum for practice that particular day.&rdquo;Favel&rsquo;s &ldquo;fuzziness&rdquo; following his two-day hospital stay kept him out of the Flyers&rsquo; lineup for awhile, which again left it up to Gamble to get the Fivers into the Western Division playoffs.&ldquo;I think I&rsquo;m okay except for the fuzziness,&rdquo; said Favell. &ldquo;I understand the doctors feel it&rsquo;s best if I stay out until the fuzziness goes away.&rdquo;This could have meant several additional starting assignments for Gamble, who doesn&rsquo;t really mind the work since he prefers that rather than sitting on the bench.To win in the playoffs, it is natural that a team&rsquo;s success depends on how far it&rsquo;s goalkeeping can carry it.Not too long ago &mdash; following the Parent trade &mdash; it appeared there was only one. Now Gamble has proven that the Flyers have a second front-liner to throw in the net against the opposition. &#9632;

Gamble Saved Day After Favell Hurt In Playoff Drive Philadelphia

MONTREAL&mdash;An education program enabling National Hockey League players to extend their education during the off-season has been established by the NHL.Two six-week courses each summer will be offered to the players at the University of Ottawa. This institution was selected because of its high academic standards and because it is a bilingual university, bilingualism being an essential requirement for such a program.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-01716/2750536-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="259" height="412"><figcaption class="caption-body">Clarence Campbell</figcaption></div>Since sponsorship of junior players ended in 1967 and they could no longer be elevated to the NHL prior to their 20th birthday, many players have been able to get a start on a college education. With this new program, many more youngsters will be encouraged to pursue a career in hockey with the knowledge that they will not have to forsake their education.Cost of the plan will be shared by the players and their clubs and the courses will take the form of two six-week semesters, the first from approximately May 20th to the end of June and the second from the beginning of July to the middle of August.Players participating in the program will receive an aptitude test at the 1971 training camps. The test is designed to aid the student in choosing the proper course. Each player will receive the aid of a counsellor. who will discuss the results of the test with him.In commenting on the program. NHL President Clarence Campbell said:&ldquo;This is a major step forward for the NHL and for its players. This program is an honest effort to provide the educational tools with which players will be able to move into successful careers once they complete their roles as active players.&ldquo;The courses are full-fledged university courses and the degrees will have to be earned the same as by full-time students. My hope is that as many players as possible will take the opportunity to participate in this program. It has wonderful potentialities for them in a very broad field of careers not otherwise available.&rdquo;As more and more positions become available within hockey itself at the executive level, it will be necessary for the players to become better educated and more equipped to handle executive positions if they hope to stay in hockey as a career once their playing days are terminated.The program, prepared in co-operation with Kenneth J. Ferren, Director of Admissions&rsquo; at the University of Ottawa, and William A. R. Orban, Director of Physical Education, consists of several levels:&mdash;A secondary-school program equivalent to a regular program at the Grade 12 level to be offered at two levels. This program will include English or French, mathematics, science and social science.&mdash;A preparatory university year, including the subjects of psychology, sociology, communications and philosophy of man; options to be chosen from business organization, labor-management problems and economics.&mdash;College of Applied Arts and Technology program of either applied arts subjects, vocational subjects or technological subjects. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY CHARLEY BARTON</div>BUFFALO&mdash;A 45-year-old National Hockey League record lay tattered and torn, and Memorial Auditorium rocked with the deafening roar of a tumultuous sellout throng of 10.429.This was a split second after Gilbert Perreault put away a short backhander in the &Iacute;6th minute of the second period in a 5-3 win for the Buffalo Sabres over the St. Louis Blues.For Perreault, it was his 35th goal of the season, wiping out the former rookie record of 34 set in the 1925-26 season by Nels Stewart of the Montreal Maroons and tied by Minnesota&rsquo;s Danny Grant and California&rsquo;s Norm Ferguson.It was Perreault&rsquo;s 17th goal at home, and the overjoyed patrons accorded him two standing ovations. The first, of course, was when he scored and his teammates came over the boards to congratulate him.Play was delayed for some five minutes to clear the ice of assorted debris. When the action was ready to resume. Punch Imlach, the Buffalo general manager and coach, sent him out for the faceoff, and again the brilliant young center received a standing ovation.Ironically, the goal which set the record was Perreault&rsquo;s first against St. Louis in the last game of the season between the clubs.Only the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Black Hawks had been able to shut him out. With eight games remaining, Perreault was confident he could hit the 40-goal mark.&ldquo;This is a big thrill for me &hellip; and I am very happy to get the record-breaker in Buffalo for our own fans,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I have been threated very well by the fans and the club, and I am happy.&ldquo;I really haven&rsquo;t felt much pressure going after the record. To me, if I score and the team wins, that&rsquo;s fine. If I don&rsquo;t score and the team wins, that&rsquo;s fine, too.&rdquo;The record-breaker was a power-play goal on which center Don Marshall and defenseman Al Hamilton drew assists. Marshall threw the puck beside the St. Louis net, and both Perreault and Hamilton took swipes at it.It was Perreault who batted it past Ernie Wakely, the St. Louis goaltender.En route to the record, Perreault scored six goals against California; five against Philadelphia; four each against Montreal, Los Angeles and Vancouver; three each against New York and Boston; two each against Minnesota and Pittsburgh and one against Detroit and St. Louis. &ldquo;He is simply a superb young hockey player who is certain to become a genuine super-star,&rdquo; said Imlach. &ldquo;You have to remember this is a kid carrying an NHL team. I can&rsquo;t wait to see what he does when he gets. some in this league.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY DAN PROUDFOOT</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01735/2750629-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="265" height="437"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bob Baun</figcaption></div>TORONTO&mdash;When members of the Professional Hockey Writers&rsquo; Association Toronto chapter voted to select the Maple Leaf most deserving of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, Bob Baun&rsquo;s name was mentioned most, hut often with a nervous qualification, &ldquo;hey, what about the sports-manship?&rdquo;Each city chapter wanted to name a candidate with a possibility of winning the over-all voting, of course, and so some Toronto voters feared Baun disqualified himself as a Masterton candidate because of his crunching, bruising and mauling style.There was no question about his satisfying the other Masterton requirements, perseverance and dedication to hockey, but sportsmanship? Some thought it would be like voting for the 100-tooth bulldog which spent its movie cartoon life chasing Sylvester the cat. Is biting the fur from Sylvester&rsquo;s tail good sportsmanship? What about handing over a stick for dynamite disguised as a cigar? Want a light, says Baun.Conclusion was that rough play is as permissible in hockey as in Sylvester cartoons, and Baun was voted Toronto&rsquo;s choice &mdash; just ahead of Bill MacMillan, the rookie right wing.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m just trying to do a job,&rdquo; says Baun. "I&rsquo;m not trying to hurt anybody. Bodychecking is allowed in this game and that&rsquo;s what I try to do. I don&rsquo;t like to see anybody hurt and that goes for myself, too.&rdquo;Baun has been hurt, many times, in his 15 years in the National Hockey League. But his reputation has grown as he&rsquo;s played while suffering from injuries. He once scored an over-time goal in Stanley Cup play while skating with a double fracture of his right tibia.This season, he played while suffering from a broken little toe, which sounds insignificant but didn&rsquo;t feel that way. But he didn&rsquo;t miss a game with the injury.In fact, there was no question of Baun missing a game until he developed an extremely sore and stiff neck late in the schedule. Baun always is stiff, sore and bruised &mdash; testimony to the point that he takes as well as gives &mdash; but Leaf coach John McLellan was concerned that his leading defenseman would suffer from sneak attacks while not being able to turn his head. After all, peripheral vision helps, but what about New York Rangers&rsquo; Ted Irvine approaching speedily from behind? Baun&rsquo;s only hope would be a periscope.McLellan wanted Baun healthy, or at least mobile, for the playoffs because he is the steadying body on the Leaf defense. Since Baun was released on waivers by Detroit Red Wings and moved to Buffalo to St. Louis to Toronto, the team&rsquo;s defense has improved immeasurably.Baun does two things which have impressed the younger defensemen. He shows that hitting counts: the only time he doesn&rsquo;t play the body is when he&rsquo;s blocking a shot. Secondly, he gives the impression that the only way to play is all-out.But the only place a bulldog is cheered is at home. And so Baun is booed around the NHL particularly in Montreal. His checks put two Canadiens, Serge Savard and Claude Larose on the injury list &mdash; Savard for the season with a fractured leg. Orland Kurtenbach, the man who made Vancouver Canucks go, disappeared from the line-up for several weeks with a wobbly knee after a Baun check, and Canucks promptly went toward the bottom of the eastern division.All this damage may suggest something other than sportsmanship, but not to the Toronto voters who selected Baun their candidate to follow previous Masterton winners Ted Hampson, Claude Provost and Pit Martin. They saw Baun as dedicated, extreme in perseverance, and one of the hardest hitters in hockey.LEAF NOTES&mdash;As playoffs approached and rookie Darryl Sittler was due back from weeks spent recovering from a broken wrist, Leafs were hit with an as sortment of minor injuries and ailments &hellip;Paul Henderson missed four games suffering from a stomach virus, returned, and was hit by a charley horse &hellip; defenseman Jim Dorey was in hospital for tests after being clothes-lined by ear infection, hives, and flu symptoms &hellip; Norm Ullman missed five games with a broken bone in one finger &hellip; Dave Keon missed two with damaged ligament in his right thumb &hellip; Brian Spencer suffered a minorgroin injury which kept him out of uniform one game &hellip; Defenseman Rick Ley discovered he has an ulcer &hellip; In spite of the ward full of ailing Leafs, Los Angeles coach-manager Larry Regan picked Leafs to beat New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY DWAYNE NETLAND</div>TWIN CITIES &mdash;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-02671/2750791-1-eng-US/f0011-022.jpg" title="f0011-02" width="264" height="417"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jude Drouin</figcaption></div>Jack Gordon has been around the politics of professional athletics long enough to realize he had to carefully pick his words.The coach of the Minnesota North Stars wanted to implement the candidacy of his own rookie, Jude Drouin, for the Calder Trophy without impugning credentials the favorite, Buffalo&rsquo;s Perreault.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m aware of Perreault done,&rdquo; Gordon said, &ldquo;and he has had a great season. Nobody could ever dispute that. He has meant a lot to the Buffalo team and to the Buffalo franchise.&ldquo;But it seems to me that Perreault had the inside track for the Calder before the season was half over. He&rsquo;s gotten all the publicity.&ldquo;I wonder if the fellows who select that award winner know how much consideration that Drouin should receive.&rdquo;Drouin has been running neck-and-neck with the Buffalo center in points through the last two months of the season, although he is far behind Perreault in goals.&ldquo;Our guy&rsquo;s real value is as a playmaker and a checker,&rdquo; continued Gordon. &ldquo;Some of the things he has done this season have really been unbelievable.&ldquo;His two wingers, Danny Grant and Bill Goldsworthy, each have over 30 goals apiece. Throw in his tremendous checking, and you have a rookie that I feel should be given every consideration for this award.&rdquo;Gordon&rsquo;s affection for Drouin is understandable, but there was a time, in the early days of training camp last fall, when he was very disenchanted with him.Drouin, who had been obtained in a trade last summer by general manager Wren Blair with Montreal for Billy Collins, reported to the North Stars as a 106-point scorer the season previous with the Montreal Voyageurs.Collins had been a popular player in Minnesota, and the first impression of Drouin by the North Star management was not a favorable one. Gordon was so disappointed by him in the early workouts that he demoted the rookie to the &ldquo;B&rdquo; squad.But Drouin soon came around, changed his attitude and began playing some consistently good hockey, regardless of whom they put on his wings.Then, on the day after the All Star game, Gordon made the move that sent the North Stars off and running. He shifted his lines to get Drouin on a unit with Grant and Goldsworthy. In his next 27 games after being assigned with Drouin, Goldsworthy scored 24 goals.&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve heard a lot about Perreault, too,&rdquo; said Goldsworthy, &ldquo;and I&rsquo;ve seen a lot of him. He&rsquo;s played well against us. But Jude has been just tremendous, believe me. I consider him one of the most under-rated players in the National Hockey League.&rdquo;Drouin had to sit out a three-game suspension imposed by NHL president Clarence Campbell for attacking referee Bruce Hood in a game Feb. 14. In his first game back, Drouin set up three Minnesota goals in a 5-1 victory over Los Angeles.Jude himself has little to say over the Calder controversy, except to point out that Minnesota has been in the West Division playoff picture all season. Left unsaid was the fact that Perreault has not been forced to play under that kind of pressure with Buffalo. &#9632;

Stars Claim Drouin More Deserving Of Calder Award Minnesota

LOUIS &mdash;Frank St. Marseille believes that an 8 P.M. hockey game starts in the afternoon.&ldquo;I have to be thinking of hockey in the afternoon,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;The hardest part of preparing for a game is mental, and I play my best games when I can think about a game throughout the day.&ldquo;That doesn&rsquo;t always happen,&rdquo; he added. &ldquo;Sometimes you&rsquo;ll be at home with the family and you might get sidetracked and forget about hockey.&ldquo;A 78-game schedule is tough on a guy, and your body reacts even more if you&rsquo;re mentally tired,&rdquo; St. Marseille said. &ldquo;If we lose, I have a hard time sleeping.&rdquo;St. Marseille and his teammates on the St. Louis Blues have been winning just about as much this year as they did the past two seasons when they ran away with the title in the West Division of the NHL. But this season they find themselves chasing the carpetbagging Chicago Black Hawks.But St. Marseille has played well in the playoffs in the past three seasons as the Blues have reached the Stanley Cup finals each year, and he&rsquo;s looking forward to this year&rsquo;s playoffs.&ldquo;You can&rsquo;t count anybody out, once you get into the playoffs,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I wouldn&rsquo;t be surprised to see Montreal give Boston a lot of trouble.&rdquo;St. Marseille scored a hat trick against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup semi-finals last season. This year he has already topped his regular-season high of 16 goals, which he had reached twice previously.&ldquo;If your name is Hull or Esposito, you just shoot,&rdquo; St. Marseille said. &ldquo;But I guess that for most of us being able to score is talent and luck and a lot of hard work.&ldquo;When you&rsquo;re tired a little bit or fatigued mentally, you don&rsquo;t shoot hard,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If you really get down, the other guys have to pick up the slack.&rdquo;St. Marseille is ordinarily a center but this year he has spent a lot of time at right wing. Gary Sabourin&rsquo;s broken leg has kept Frank on the wing.&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t mind right wing,&rsquo; although I prefer center,&rdquo; St. Marseille said, &ldquo;&Auml;&frac34;ll play anywhere they want me to play, i&iacute; they want me to play left wing, I&rsquo;ll play there. If they want me to play defense, I may not be good, but I&rsquo;ll play there.&rdquo;St. Marseille has also seen other changes on the team this season, as more than half of the personnel who lost to Boston in the Cup finals last spring have been sent to other clubs, and the Blues have taken on more young players. After the Red Berenson-Garry Unger trade St. Marseille found himself neck-and- neck with Christian Bordeleau for the team scoring lead.Even though the Blues have undergone a terrific turnover, the adjustment has been more rapid than expected. <div class="byline">BY JOHN PORTER</div>OAKLAND&mdash;Fred Glover was talking about next season.It was at a time when most of the coaches in the National Hockey League were talking about the playoffs, but the California Golden Seals had been eliminated already after making the post season carnival two years running. So Glover was talking about next year.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-01693/2750874-1-eng-US/f0013-012.jpg" title="f0013-01" width="265" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ron Stackhouse</figcaption></div>&ldquo;Stackhouse (Ron) and Red mond (Dick) played well,&rdquo; was the way Glover summed up a recent game. &ldquo;Look, these kids are going to be our future.&rdquo;There are other youngsters the coach is watching closely from afar. He has some budding talent in Providence, most notably Chris Oddleifson who was the Seals&rsquo; No. 1 draft choice last year.Upon hearing his big center prospect scored two goals and added three assists in a recent win for the Reds, Glover allowed himself the luxury of a shrewd grin.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s the best man Providence has,&rdquo; Fred was willing to say. Pressed further, he conceded a &ldquo;very strong possibility&rdquo; that Oddleifson would be in the big league next season.&ldquo;Any young player we have in the minors will get a good long look,&rdquo; the coach promised. &ldquo;You know, with young talent you can suffer a bit to accomplish something.&rdquo;Asked to name some players he would be building around for next season, Glover named his four best defensemen, then added: &ldquo;Actually, on defense we&rsquo;re not in bad shape. We&rsquo;re much bigger now.&ldquo;The problem for the longest time on this club has been on the wings. Ernie Hicke has had a good season this year and Gary Croteau played well despite having problems from time to time.&rdquo;Well, do you expect major changes on the wings next season?&ldquo;That&rsquo;s right,&rdquo; he declared quite distinctly.Center ice has been a sore spot all season, mainly because of injuries to Joe Hardy, Don O&rsquo; Donoghue, Earl Ingarfield and Mike Laughton.They&rsquo;re all playing now and are fairly healthy, but it&rsquo;s a little too late. However, next season could be different.Goaltending is another problem. Gary Smith is capable of a. great game, but not 78 times a season.Backup goalie Chris Worthy was heard to say after a recent defeat, &ldquo;Things have gotta get better.&rdquo;The coach agrees. That&rsquo;s why he&rsquo;s talking and planning for the future.SEALS SHOTS: Going into the final two weeks of the regular season, only one Seal was hurting enough not to be able to play&hellip;Carol Vadnais hoped to have his leg cast removed at the end of March&hellip;California won two of three games from teams that had stymied the Seals all season&hellip;First, Pittsburgh tumbled (5-2, March 20) to wipe out a nine-game winless streak against the Penguins going back to the playoffs last year&hellip; Los Angeles got the treatment (5-2) four days later for the Seals&rsquo; 19th win of the season. &#9632;

They lost all three. It was the final blow to a frustrating season fraught with injuries and the poor playing by several key players.It&rsquo;s easy to use injuries as excuses for the Pens plight&mdash;but where does that get one. In a way, losing three games to California, Vancouver and Los Angeles may have given Coach Red Kelly a better idea of what changes he must make for next year.At the point of this writing, the Penguins have two players who could get that coveted 20 goals this season&mdash;Dean Prentice and Jean Pronovost. Keith McCreary has 18, one less than Prentice and Pronovost, and if he is healthy he also could hit the 20-goal mark. Greg Polis also has 18 but he is out for the season.With six games remaining&mdash; the Flyers had eight&mdash;the Pens were eight points back. Philadelphia needed only one victory and a Penguin loss to clinch fourth place.Kelly, however, at first conceded nothing although his &ldquo;We&rsquo;re still in it as long as we&rsquo;ve got a mathematical chance,&rdquo; sounded like a hallow hope rather than a realistic appraisal.Kelly is an intelligent, former politician who has to be rated as one of the best coaches in the National Hockey League.For this reason, it is safe to believe that he knew much better than he was admitting that there was no hope for making the playoffs.But then he did concede something.&ldquo;We can&rsquo;t win it ourselves, I don&rsquo;t believe.&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Philadelphia will have to blow it.&rdquo;In 25 years of hockey, Kelly has been on the sidelines during playoffs either as a coach or player only one other year, 1958-59.&ldquo;As a player, you never want to miss the playoffs,&rdquo; Kelly said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s what the game&rsquo;s all about. You start the season with that goal, and if you don&rsquo;t make it&mdash;nothing. You have to win. Anybody can lose.&rdquo;Playoffs also mean extra money and a summer of satisfaction for a player &mdash; and a coach.This is Kelly&rsquo;s first miss as a coach. And he&rsquo;s finding it much more difficult than even missing as a player.&ldquo;If you&rsquo;re playing&mdash;as long as you&rsquo;re out on the ice,&rdquo; he says, &ldquo;you can do something. You can knock a guy into the rail. But as coach what can you do?&ldquo;It&rsquo;s thougher to lose as a coach,&rdquo; he said. When you&rsquo;re playing, you&rsquo;re spent at the end of the game. You&rsquo;re too tired to realize what losing means. Coaches don&rsquo;t get that exhaustion to lean back on. It&rsquo;s frustrating, eh?&rdquo;For five weeks Kelly has been frustrated. Since a 5-4 victory over Chicago on Feb. 13, the Penguins went into an incredible slump.They have won only one game in the past 16 games, tying five and losing ten.But Kelly says it all didn&rsquo;t occur in one month.&ldquo;We started off blowing games early and we never did get off the mark. You can&rsquo;t wait until the last month to make a move.&rdquo;Kelly isn&rsquo;t using injuries as an excuse. And he hasn&rsquo;t really publicly diagnosed the club&rsquo;s problem, which he must have some hint of.But the red-haired Irishman, a loser at last, is philosphical about the dilemma when pressed, finally admitting that nothing but a miracle, will save the Pens this year. &#9632;

The diminutive Habs&rsquo; star has tallied 18 power play goals and five game winners.This past week, he scored twice as the Habs toppled Philadelphia 5-3, one coming on a power play. In his next effort he rapped in the deciding goal to beat the Black Hawks 2-1 for his 35th of the year.THE HOCKEY NEWS has selected Cournoyer as the East Division player whom we think belongs among the NH&Auml;&frac12;s Stars Of The Week.<h2>In The West</h2>The sophomore jinx has proven the downfall of many National Leaguers over the years but it hasn&rsquo;t affected Bobby Clarke of the Philadelphia Flyers.Clarke, who scored 15 times in his rookie year with the Flyers, has almost doubled his production this season. He has a way of being in the right spot at the right time &mdash; like poking in the winning goal five times, scoring three game &mdash; tieing markers and adding nine power play goals.Clarke scored three times last week, two coming in the crucial 3-1 win over Pittsburgh that wrapped up a playoff berth for the Flyers, who were frustrated last year on the final day of the schedule. You&rsquo;re so far behind them you can&rsquo;t see them with the Mt. Send you champagne and strip steaks? Hardly. More than likely your pay will be cut or, at worst, you&rsquo;ll be looking for a new position.Bruce A. Norris is no ordinary boss, however. Instead of ordering cross-the-board wage cuts for his Red Wings, who are winding up their losingest season in history, Norris is looking ahead to 1971-72 and trying to lay a foundation of cameraderie.So while Boston and New York, Toronto and Montreal, Chicago and St. Louis and the two other West Division Stanley Cup playoff teams are straining and sweating under playoff pressure, the Red Wings are going to be enjoying the warm zephyrs from the Gulf of Mexico, sweeping inland on the Florida peninsula to Norris&rsquo; Homossassa Springs resort.Norris ordered the company-paid vacation for the players and their families plus the scouting staff in an effort to build togetherness on a team that resembles a crazy-quilt.It&rsquo;s impossible to preach tradition to this Red Wing team. Only eight of them have come up through the Detroit system.The eight survivors of the wildest trading binge in Detroit history are: Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Nick Libett, Ron Harris (who has played for two other clubs), Gerry Hart, Jim Niekamp, Renald LeClerc and Jim Rutherford.Norris gave Howe a company-paid 11-day vacation in the sun earlier in the season when the 25- season veteran was burdened by a bad case of the flu and that cranky left wrist which has hampered him for two seasons now despite surgergy last spring.Norris also offered club captain Delvecchio and his wife, Teresa, an expenses-paid vacation last month but Alex turned it down.Norris&rsquo; concern is understandable. The Red Wings have been ripped asunder this season. Sid Abel, popular with most of the players and fans in Detroit and a former playing hero, quit the club in January and departed with a fiery blast at Ned Harkness and Olympia executive director Jim Bishop, accusing them of tearing down the operation.Popular players were traded&mdash; Bob Baun, Pete Stemkowski and Garry Unger.Several players had caustic words for management and all in all, a winning attitude didn&rsquo;t prevail around Olympia.Norris took plenty of abuse from the fans and certain sections of the media and many figured the only solution would be for him to sell the club to Detroit interests. Norris lives outside of Chicago, has an office in New York and a large ranch in central Florida and generally comes to Detroit only for the games, arriving several hours before faceoff and leaving after the game.But the big millionaire is standing firm.Norris has invested a great deal of money in the Red Wings and in refurbishing and enlarging Olympia and he likes hockey and is determined to have a winner.Before Abel left, when it was evident there would be a confrontation between him and Harkness, he said t hat any player who had left the Detroit organization had nothing but good words for Norris and that if the time came when he would go, he too would have good words for Norris. And he did.The Red Wings&rsquo; mass Florida vacation isn&rsquo;t new to the NHL but it still is rare. The St. Louis Blues&rsquo; owners, Sid Salomon Jr. and Sid Salomon III, have given the Blues and their families postseason vacations at the Salomon-owned Florida hotel.This is the first time though that losers have been so well treated.Basking in the Florida sun won&rsquo;t cure all the Red Wing problems and automatically make them playoff contenders next season, though.The club continued stumbling through the closing weeks, rarely putting a crowd-pleasing performance together.The losses continued to pile up, each one after 39 building a club negative record and these Red Wings have yielded more goals than any other Detroit team.Goaltending was a problem from the start of the season with Roger Crozier, who alternated last season with Roy Edwards, shuffled off to Buffalo. Edwards obviously can&rsquo;t handle the whole load himself and when he suffered a hairline skull fracture on Dec. 6 it was the most serious blow to the Wings of the season.Behind Edwards the Wings had Jim Rutherford, a babyfaced sophomore pro, and Don McLeod and Gerry Gray, two other lightly-experienced professionals.Edwards continued to suffer headaches and dizzy spells as after-effects of the skull fracture and was used little in the final six weeks of the season. Management finally decided to excuse him for the balance of the campaign with seven games to play.The Wings are going with Rutherford and Gray and their performances will be weighed in June when it comes time to turn in the protected lists.Gray, a Brantford, Ont., native, is six feet tall compared to Rutherford&rsquo;s 5-8 but Rutherford still seems to have the inside track on the No. 2 position. &#9632;

Another is goalie Joe Junkin, who was sidelined for the entire season, after suffering a detached retina of the eye. He was struck with a puck at a summer hockey camp.Mathers also expressed the opinion that independent minor League operations also may be at an end because &ldquo;there could be no availability to procure hockey players that farm teams have. We would either have to go to the draft or hook up with another NHL team.&rdquo;And on this score things don&rsquo;t appear bright since all the NHL clubs have some type of agreements with other AHL clubs, while a half-dozen of the eight teams in the AHL are development clubs for the major league.Hershey and the Baltimore Clippers are the lone independent operations in the AHL, that is, they own most of their players. Baltimore secured a few hands from the Detroit Red Wings this season.Boston has a development team in Oklahoma City of the Central League and also stocks players in Dayton in the IHL.According to Boston reports its present plans call for no change in the Oklahoma or Dayton setup.There had been rumors that the Central League might fold after this season; however, Mathers said it was &ldquo;my understanding that the Central League will operate next season.&rdquo;The Bruins, who had been in secret negotiations with the AHL since last August, gave no indication of how they intend to stock the new minor league team.Boston is the second NHL club to operate a second franchise in a major league building. The Montreal Canadiens with their Voyageur team in the AHL were the first. But it&rsquo;s been a financial flop. The Voyageurs played a number of games in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where the club eventually may be moved, perhaps next season.One AHL coach, who didn&rsquo;t wish to be identified, said the Halifax situation was a &ldquo;poor one&rdquo;.&ldquo;We played in there one night and maybe 1,000 or so fans showed up,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It was a dead crowd. The fans simply couldn&rsquo;t identify with the players. Maybe if Montreal puts a team in there permanently it might change, but now it&rsquo;s bad for the players&rsquo; morale and families.&ldquo;If Montreal didn&rsquo;t have that kid (Ken) Dryden in goal, the club wouldn&rsquo;t have been in the Eastern Division race. He kept them in it all the way.&rdquo;Before Dryden moved on to the parent Canadiens, the rangy &lsquo;goalie had a brilliant 2.68 goal against average in 33 games along with three shutouts for the league&rsquo;s finest record.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-01433/2751556-1-eng-US/f0018-012.jpg" title="f0018-01" width="544" height="570"><figcaption class="caption-body">MARC REAUME&hellip; Under Consideration</figcaption></div>With Boston joining the AHL, the league will have at least ten teams next fall since the Tidewater Kings of Norfolk were accepted sometime ago. Detroit will provide players.Other cities have been mentioned as possible AHL members and it&rsquo;s known the league would eventually like to operate three divisions, East, West and South, composed of four clubs to a division.New Haven, Conn, is slated to enter the league in 1972-73 with the Minnesota North Stars stocking the club. &#9632;

New AHL Franchise For Boston Likely To End Hershey Hookup

Claire Dracke? Dune Fisher?<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-02346/2751587-1-eng-US/f0018-022.jpg" title="f0018-02" width="256" height="414"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dave Creighton</figcaption></div>Those are just some of the candidates for the unenviable task of lifting the Amerks out of the American Hockey League basement, where they seem to have settled permanently.John (Pea nuts) O&rsquo;Flaherty finished up the season on an interim basis after Dick Gamble was fired Feb. 8. He&rsquo;s Vancouver&rsquo;s chief scout and will not be the coach next season.Sometine between now and the annual draft meetings in June. Vancouver general manager Bud Poile and Rochester G.M. Doug Adam will have to come up with somebody.The aforementioned names are in the running.Cherry was a popular Amerk defenseman for 5&frac12; seasons and makes his home here now. He&rsquo;s been out of pro hockey for two seasons.Creighton is the highly-successful general manager-coach in Charlotte: Milne is coaching the St. Catharines Juniors; Maloney is a Vancouver scout and was an all-time Western League great: Reaume was the most valuable defenseman in the Western League last season and was seriously injured in an automobile accident while playing with Rochester this year; Olmstead is a former NHL coach; Drake is at the University of Alberta and Fisher is a former Hershey Bear winger.Not all of those have applied for the job. Some have and others are on a list put together by Poile and Adam.And there&rsquo;s one present AHL coach who has expressed an interest in coming to Rochester, according to Poile. For obvious reasons he will remain unnamed at this point.There&rsquo;s one area of difference in the thoughts of Poile and Adam which leads to an interesting conclusion. Poile wants to have a fulltime general manager and a fulltime coach here. Adam already has been named the G.M.But Adam believes one man handling both jobs is the best solution.That man just might be Doug Adam. &#9632;

The problem has been that the Barons have not put it all together on a consistent basis.At no time during the current campaign have the Barons won more than four games in a row (they had a string of three at the time of this writing). &ldquo;It seems that every time we start to gain momentum, somebody catches us standing around and beats us,&rdquo; observed General Manager, John Muckier. &ldquo;We needed muscle. That&rsquo;s why we traded for Roger Cote. Roger&rsquo;s a tough hockey player and gives us added experience behind the blueline.&rdquo;Cote, an eleven year pro veteran, is not bashful when he&rsquo;s on the ice, He led the AHL in penalty minutes one year and commands deserved respect from enemy forwards. Cote, teaming with Marshall Johnston, Tom Polanic, Gary Geldart, Bill Needham and young Dennis Patterson, gives the Barons&rsquo; depth and ability on defense.Terry Holbrook, the rookie winger who came to Cleveland from Springfield in the same deal, appears, too, to have found a home. Holbrook, skating with center Grant Erickson and John Gofton, has become part of the Baron&rsquo;s hottest line. It was Holbrook who came up with a big assist in the Barons recent win over his former Springfield team-mates.With Erickson&rsquo;s line flying and Walter McKechnie and Joey Johnston pivoting the others, the Cleveland attack is again exploding.The Barons appear to be building the momentum that has escaped them all season long. If they remember the formula, skate and hit, Cleveland will be a strong contender for it&rsquo;s first Calder Cup in seven years. The skating should take care of itself. The defense will handle the rest.Barons&rsquo; netminder Gary Kurt turned in two outstanding performances allowing the high-scoring Baltimore club only one goal in two contests while the Cleveland icers posted 3-1 and 40 wins over the Clippers. That performance lowered Kurt&rsquo;s goals against average to an excellent 2.62.Center Joey Johnston with 67 points on 25 goals and 42 asists and winger Norm Beaudin with 65 points on 21 goals and a team leading 44 assists continue to pace the Barons&rsquo; scoring. Mike Chernoff tops the Barons in goals with 26 for the year.BLUELINERS: &mdash; The Barons average attendance (5,317) is third best in the A.H.L&hellip; The Barons have established a broadcast, network for playoff games that will beam games all over Northern Ohio. NORTH AMERICAN HOCKEY SCHOOL

SPRINGFIELD&mdash;Carl Johnson is perhaps the busiest member of the Springfield Kings&rsquo; front office, and the least known and publicized. He started this season with the job as business manager as well as publicity director. The native of Montreal has been doing a fine job at both with the team.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-01255/2751826-1-eng-US/f0020-012.jpg" title="f0020-01" width="265" height="441"><figcaption class="caption-body">Carl Johnson</figcaption></div>Carl brings a fine background into the American Hockey League. Though he has been in this country for l6 years, he has a vast hockey and show business promotional background. If is safe to say he knows the game of hockey and the business end from the ground up.Among his stops in the Eastern League were positions with the Long Island Ducks as well as the Jacksonville club. He learned a lot in those positions with teams which require that a front office man do just about everything.Johnson was with the ill-fated Memphis South Stars, a farm club of the Minnesota team. He was responsible for introducing the game to these people in Memphis. The club did not click for many reasons, including a weak club. In addition, they had tremendous competition from college sports.&ldquo;A funny thing happened in Memphis,&rdquo; he told us. &ldquo;When we opened the Coliseum down there with its artificial ice, we. could have charged admission to the people, there were so many of them who wanted to see what artifical ice looked like. But once the club started playing, people just didn&rsquo;t pay to see hockey. They weren&rsquo;t familiar enough with the game.&rdquo;Here, in Springfield, Johnson has his han s full in the front office with the business end. His main job is getting the Kings hockey magazine out. Some times this can be a major headache.Game nights, his work never seems to end. He starts in the afternoon running off an important release which goes to all the writers covering the home games.Johnson is the liaison or go-between in the Kings&rsquo; dealings with the local press, radio and TV men. And relations here are very smooth ahd well organized. The last few weeks, with so many new players and trades, he has been kept hopping announcing these additions to all the proper local news media.Carl also has to check receipts for home games, make the necessary audits in the books and send this information on to Los Angeles. He also makes arrangements for press luncheons as well as providing films and Kings players for various local functions. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JOHN TRAVERS</div>HERSHEY&mdash;Talk about timing, Winter officially ended Mar. 20 and the Hershey Bears emerged from hibernation with a growl, ready for the Calder Cup championship battle, an annual Springtime affair.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-02182/2751857-1-eng-US/f0020-022.jpg" title="f0020-02" width="257" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bob Leiter</figcaption></div>Coach Frank Mathers&rsquo; charges at the closing stages of the American League&rsquo;s Western Division race were the hottest outfit on blades.The Bears, receiving top-notch goaltending from Andre Gill and excellent relief work by rookie Dan Bouchard went through their first nine games in March with a 6-2-1 standard, the team&rsquo;s finest all season.In his last 11 starts, dating back to Feb. 8, Gill backstopped the club to seven wins, three ties against one defeat, allowing only 26 goals in the stretch.Bouchard came on in relief of Gill to start the second period of game against the Providence Reds here Mar. 17. Gill had pulled a hamstring muscle of the right leg in the opening period. Hershey went on to win, 4-2, and three nights later Bouchard backstopped Hershey to a 6-1 decision over the rugged Cleveland Barons.From Mar. 10 to 20, Hershey won five of six games to lock up third place in the Western Division.Hershey&rsquo;s defensive corps of Darryl Edestrand, Ralph Keller, Mike Mahoney, Nick Beverley and Bob Barber, not only played some of its finest hockey on the backline but also got into the scoring act. Edestrand chipped in with a goal and three assists; Keller with five goals and two assists; Beverley with one goal and three assists, while Barber had a goal and an assist. That added up to eight goals in a five game span.Meanwhile up in the front line, Stan Gilbertson, Bob Leiter, Bud Debrody, among other forwards, were delivering key goals.Leiter, one of the league&rsquo;s finest centermen, reached the 30 goal level by banging in a three goal &ldquo;hat trick&rdquo; against Montreal and then following with a pair against Providence two nights later.Michel Harvey and Later Kept up their neck-and-neck race for the club scoring title. After 65 games, Leiter was in front with 61 on 30 goals and 31 assists, while Harvey stood at 58 with 23 goals and 35 assists.Keller, who shattered the career record of most goals scored by a defenseman earlier in the season, was having his greatest campaign in ten AHL seasons. He had notched 18 goals after 64 games, jacking his lifetime record to 87 goals. &#9632;

They lost the ECAC semi-final game, 4-2 to Harvard at Boston Garden, and had to settle for third place in the playoffs.This situation would have made Harvard and Clarkson, the playoff tourney finalists, the East representatives at Syracuse. But the selection committee of Charlie Holt, Thom Lawler, and George Menard saw fit to invoke, for the first time, the rule stating that another team than other the runner-up may get an NCAA berth.&ldquo;It was my greatest thrill in sports,&rdquo; exulted Kelley in the locker room. &ldquo;And we&rsquo;ve got the team to do it again next year.&rdquo;BU loses only seniors Steve Stirling, Wayne Gowing, and Pete Yetten off this year&rsquo;s team. That makes for quite a few returning bodies. Should they make the nationals again, by the way, it&rsquo;ll be a defense of their crown before a home town crowd. The NCAA Tournament will be held at the Boston Garden for the next three years; co-hosts for 1971-72 will be Boston College and Northeastern.As you may guess, Syracuse was the last hurrah for the small arenas hosting the NCAA&rsquo;s. A crowd of 6,200 just isn&rsquo;t enough of a seating capacity any more. Look for places like St. Louis and Bloomington as future sites, with TV coverage accompanying.The American Hockey Coaches&rsquo; Association voted retiring Harvard coach Cooney Weiland the Spencer Penrose Award as coach of the year. Sid Watson of Bowdoin received the Eddie Jeremiah Award as small-college coach of the year. Both men were receiving their respective awards for the second time.The fourth place finish must have been a bitter disappointment to Cooney and his Crimson, who played so well to upset BU in Boston Garden. They zoomed out to a three-goal lead against Minnesota but then ran out of gas and never could regain their momentum.&ldquo;Still, I&rsquo;m proud of everyone on this club,&rdquo; he stated after the 1-0 consolation loss to Denver. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ll all remember this year. There have been enough thrills in my final season to last a lifetime.&rdquo;Several rule changes were debated back and forth in the Rules Committee meeting. Among the recommendations were:&bull; use of one referee and two linesmen as in the NHL.&bull; checking all over the ice (to include the offensive zone).&bull; legitimizing fighting, with the theory that there would be less stick swinging.&bull; allowing players to straddle the blue line to avoid offside calls, rather than making them clear the zone completely as they must now if the puck comes back over the blue line into neutral ice.&bull; delineating of a referee&rsquo;s crease around the penalty timekeeper&rsquo;s area, with a misconduct meted out to players who invade it to argue with the striped shirts.&bull; stiffer penalties for stick swinging.&bull; universalization throughout the NCAA of the one-game suspension for fighting and malicious use of the stick. As it is now, certain Western teams can avoid the penalty in non-conference games.&bull; automatic icing, to be whistled when the puck crosses the goal line. This would avoid injuries caused in headlong races for the rubber.It&rsquo;s the nature of the bureaucracy to slow down any radical rule changes. Don&rsquo;t expect too much different next year, even though the NCAA executive council hasn&rsquo;t been presented with the recommendations. &#9632;

Frank Hughes, rightwinger, and their centerman Larry Lund, and veteran leftwinger Bob Barlow were the runnersup.Hughes scored six goals and four assists during the three-game week, including a &ldquo;hat trick&rdquo; in an 8-1 upset of the league leading Portland Bucka-roos in Portland. Lund had two goals and seven assists. Barlow counted five assists, including four in one game against Portland.The Roadrunners piled up 37 goals while allowing just eight in a five-game win streak.The victory in Portland was the first for Phoenix since Feb. 28, 1968, and was only Portland&rsquo;s third home loss of the season. The league record for fewest home losses in a season is three, set by New Westminster in 1949-50.The Bucks&rsquo; 8-1 loss marked the most goals ever scored against the Bucks in Portland and the 61 first period equalled the most goals ever scored against Portland in a single period. The other clubs were Edmonton and Los Angeles and Phoenix defenseman Howie Young was a member of both.Hinse&rsquo;s four-goal game was a team record, giving him 38 for the season. The season team record was 34, set last season by Milan Marcetta. SEATTLE&mdash;Larry Popein coach of the Seattle Totems, surprised a group of about 50 at the Puget Sound sportswriters and sports casters weekly luncheon by criticizing his team&rsquo;s ability.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not here to shoot them down.&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;but I think we have about five or six fellows on the club right now who do not have the ability to play in the Western Hockey League.&rdquo;When Popein&rsquo;s comments appeared in print the next day he said that wasn&rsquo;t what he had meant, although his words, in at least one paper, were taken from a tape recording.The Totems were in fifth place, two points behind the Denver Spurs in the race for the fourth and last playoff spot, Seattle had eight games left to play and Denver had seven.Popein&rsquo;s comments were interpreted in the press more as a rap at the Totems&rsquo; source of supply, the New York Rangers, than at the players themselves.When the New York-Seattle working agreement was announced last summer, the Rangers&rsquo; General Manager, Emile Francis, promised Seattle a contender and if the Totems weren&rsquo;t in the thick of the race he said he should be blamed, not the , players, the coach or the Seattle team management. &#9632;

Learn To Play Hockey The Big League Way

SEATTLE&mdash;Gene Kinasewich announced his retirement, effective, June 1, as President of the Western Hockey League.Kinasewich, 29, succeeded Al Leader as the WHL President two years ago.The former Assistant Dean at Harward University declared his intention to return to the field of education, probably in the east, but has announced no definite plans.The league hopes to name a successor as soon as possible, said Bob Breitbard, chairman of the W&rsquo;HL&rsquo;s Board of Governors and President of the San Diego Gulls. Kinasewich Resigns As President Of WHL

PORTLAND&mdash;Two Portland Buckaroos&rsquo; defensemen have established Western Hockey League records.Connie Madigan broke Danny Sprout&rsquo;s record of most assists by a defenseman in a season, counting his 53rd. Sprout set the record of 51 with Seattle in 1951-52. Madigan also has six goals to rank among the league&rsquo;s top 20 point getters.Rick Foley, who also has a shot at the assist record with 49, wiped out the penalty mark set last season by John Arbour, then playing for the Vancouver Canucks.Foley collected 227 minutes for a rookie record last year and with eight games remaining this season had piled up 255 minutes, four more than Arbour&rsquo;s mark.The giant defenseman, 6-4, 220- pounds, also erased Bill Shvetz&rsquo;s record of 87 minor penalties with 90 and Arbour&rsquo;s mark of 95 total penalties.Strangely, only one major penalty is included in his total, but there are six misconducts and one game misconduct.The Bucks, who wrapped up their eighth regular season championship in 11 years with 10 games remaining, went over the 40-victory mark for the ninth time in those 11 seasons.
