Niagara Doomed To Another Cellar Finish

NIAGARA FALLS— Only one position was definitely decided as the 10 Ontario Hockey Association Major Junior A teams headed into the final two weeks of the schedule. Niagara Falls Flyers “clinched” last place in the circuit following their 7-3 loss to St. Catharines Black Hawks. The Flyers ended in the same position a year ago as Hap Emms and his son Paul are still trying to rebuild the once-formidable Niagara club. St. Catharines captain Marcel Dionne administered the coup de grace to the Flyers, scoring a natural hat trick in the third period including two goals while Niagara Falls had a one-man advantage. Toronto Varsity Retains Canadian College Title

SUDBURY — University of Toronto Varsity Blues staged a dramatic third period comeback to down St. Mary’s University Huskies of Halifax 5-4 and capture their third straight Canadian intercollegiate hockey championship last Saturday at the Sudbury Arena. Behind 2-0 after the first and 3-1 after two, Tom Watt’s Blue machine exploded for three goals in the first five minutes of the final stanza and were never behind thereafter. The winning marker came from the stick of Brian St. John with four minutes remaining to play, after Huskie goaler Chuck Goddard, brilliant up to then, gave the puck away to Terry Peterman in the corner, who centered it out to St. John.
