Popein Can’t Shake Gary Veneruzzo — And He’s Glad
SEATTLE — Larry Popein had to leave the Central Hockey League to get rid of a pain in the neck but it followed him to the Western Hockey League and he’s happy about it. Popein, who switched from coach of the Omaha Knights to the bench boss this season of the Seattle Totems, remembers Gary Veneruzzo’s Central League exploits. “He was the sparkplug in Kansas City,” said Popein. “He was one pain in the neck to our hockey club.” Veneruzzo split last season between Kansas City, where he scored 20 goals and 30 assists in 50 games, and Buffalo of the American Hockey League, where he had eight goals and 11 assists in 21 games. Howe Gains 1,800-Point Career Mark
DETROIT — Gordie Howe passed another milestone during a one goal, three assist performance against Buffalo … Howe counted his 1,800th regular season point … and quickly added numbers 1.801 and 1,802. Howe notched his 20th goal in a 5-3 victory over Minnesota and it’s the 22nd straight time in his 25-season NHL career that he’s hit the 20 plateau. The Wings, best attack of the season was needed to get that 6-5 victory over Buffalo which enabled them to break even with Punch Imlach’s $6 million expansion team for the season … now the Wings are fighting to beat out the Sabres and Vancouver in the East standings. Mystifying is Mickey Redmond’s ankle injury, suffered in his first Red Wing game on Jan 14 when Pittsburgh’s Bob Woytowich fell on it in the…
