Windup Western Games To Decide Pens’ Fate
PITTSBURGH— Eleven of the Penguins’ last 18 games are at home, and that’s good. But six of those games are with Montreal, Boston, Detroit, NewYork and Buffalo. That could be bad. The games likely to be most crucial are meetings with Minnesota and Philadelphia. The wav the race is developing in the West Division for the last two playoff spots, the March 10 game with the Flyers and the game with Minnesota three nights later, could determine who will be in the playoffs, and in what position. The Penguins must be given a bit of an edge since they have done so well at home and so poorly on the road. The past road trip tells the story, of how badly they’re done away. The Pens went to Minnesota, forgot to play hockey in the first…
Johnston Playing Best Coal For B’s With No End In Sight
BOSTON— Eddie Johnston is 34 years old and has been wearing the tools of ignorance for the Bruins as a goaltender for nine seasons. This would be enough to gain him the affectionate nickname of “Old Folks” until he says: “I figure I may be just coming into my own, and I have a lot of good years ahead of me.” Going back over this season there is no reason to argue with Johnston on either point. And if he is just now corning into his own, it should be noted that he served a rather rugged apprenticeship in the days when the…
Amerks Get Westbrook In Swap
New Captain As Armstrong Traded ROCHESTER— On Friday, Feb. 12. Red Armstrong lost the big C off his Amerk sweater. Then on Saturday. Feb. 20, he lost his Amerk sweater. Red Armstrong, probably the most popular player ever to skate with the Rochester Americans, was traded to the Springfield Kings for Don Westbrook eight days after being replaced as captain by defenseman Darry Sly. So in the space of less than two weeks two of the three Amerks to play more than 500 games for Rochester have departed. Dick Gamble, fired as general manager and coach Feb. 8, and Red were the only two to attain it before Sly turned the trick last weekend. Armstrong leaves after playing 511 regular season games, scoring 162 goals, assisting on 220 others and collecting 861 penalty minutes. Except for a…
