DETROIT — Some day, hockey people have been saying for years, Gordie Howe is going to slow down. Well, sad to say, the unwinding is in the process in this, Howe’s 25th year in the National Hockey League. Actually it began last season when that left wrist started paining him so much that he started turning into a one-handed hockey player. It was some decline — sure he dropped out of the top five in scoring for the first time in 21 phenomenal years. But he still triggered 31 goals, set up 40 more, helped the Red Wings to a third place finish and made the first All-Star team. And he dropped to ninth place in scoring. Espo loins NHL’s Select 50 Scorers

BOSTON Fabulous Phil Esposito has the opportunity of becoming only the second man in National Hockey League history to score more than 50 goals in one season. Esposito, the Bruins record-breaking center, notched his 50 th goal of the season on his 29th birthday Feb. 20 against the Los Angeles Kings. That goal put him in select company, joining Maurice (Rocket) Richard. Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion. both former members of the Montreal Canadiens. and Chicago’s Bobby Hull as 50-goal scorers. Only Hull has managed to score more than 50 in one season and he currently holds the record for most goals in a season with 58.…
