<h2>In The East</h2>If Rosaire Paiement of the Vancouver Canucks spent more time on the ice instead of in the penalty, box, he could turn out to be a pretty fair scorerThe robust right winger&mdash;who has spent 120 minutes cooling his heels for ice infractions this season decided to play it straifght last week and the result was a resounding five goals.Paiement scored four times in one game making him only the third player to turn the thrick this season. Stan Mikita and Dave Balon each fashioned four-goal performances before him. But Paiement was really on and came up with another goal &mdash; his fifth of the week in the club&rsquo;s 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh. It happened just a few days before onetime Canadiens&rsquo; ice great Maurice &lsquo;Rocket&rsquo; Richard saw his No. 2 hold in the alltime NHL scoring list slip away to onrushing Bobby Hull of the Chicago Black Hawks.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01733/3049302-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="259" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bobby Hull</figcaption></div>Hull, who entered last week tied with Richard in career goals at 544, scored twice against Vancouver Feb. 14 to push his lifetime mark to 546 goals and allow him to move up into the No. 2 position behind Detroit&rsquo;s great Gordie Howe.While Montrealers were still in ectasy over Beliveau&rsquo;s milestone goal, the big, amiable captain of the Canadiens was excited but he didn&rsquo;t think that he actually did anything out of the ordinary when he was out on the ice against Minnesota.&ldquo;No didn&rsquo;t do anything different. sort of played my usual routine and hoped might get on the score sheet.&rdquo;That&rsquo;s how Beliveau talked about one of his greatest games. Feb. 11, when he scored a hattrick against Minnesota to join Howe (782), Hull and Richard in elite company.While it became a matter of time in this 18th season for Beliveau&rsquo;s 500, hardly a fan hoped that the 39-year-old center great would reach that milestone in a hat-trick. He hadn&rsquo;t had one in a couple of years and his goals &mdash; 15 in 52 previous games &mdash; didn&rsquo;t come easily.But Jean had to admit thinking about the big goal and the hat-trick.&ldquo;After scored twice with 50 minutes left in the game, really thought about it. If had come out of the game with 499, pressure would have built up if went six or seven games without scoring. It&rsquo;s a wonderful feeling now that it&rsquo;s over.&rdquo;The impressive note of Beliveau&rsquo;s memorable night was that all three goals were credits to his ability down the years in the NHL. He scored twice within the first nine minutes of the game and then completed the 18th hattrick of his career in the seventh minute of the second period.On his first goal, Beliveau came rushing off the bench to replace goalie Rogatien Vachon during a delayed penalty. He took a pass from Terry Harper and heat young Minnesota goalie Gilles Gilbert with one of his oldtime shots.Three minutes later. Jean picked up a loose puck at the edge of the corner circle and skated in to deke Gilbert neatly.No. 500 was typical of the star who has so often thrilled fans throughout the NHL circuit.It came off two drop passes by Frank Mahovlich and Phil Roberto with Beliveau trailing the play that started in the Montreal zone. He cut in deep, forced Gilbert to move and neatly tucked the puck behind the rookie.&ldquo;Roberto was sideways when he got the puck from Frank and probably saw me coming.&rdquo; explained Jean. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t have much of an angle but there was a lot of net open.&rdquo;The Forum crowd of 16,158, appreciating the hat-trick readily realized it was No. 500 and gave Beliveau a standing ovation. Team-mates came off the bench in unison to congratulate their captain.Frank Mahovlich, a popular member of the Canadiens since his trade from Detroit, was the first to reach Beliveau.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m getting pretty good at setting up these career marks,&rdquo; quipped the Big M. &ldquo;I also got an assist on Gordie Howe&rsquo;s No. 700.&rdquo;Roberto seemed as happy as if it was his own milestone goal.&ldquo;When was a kid had Beliveau and Frank Mahovlich as my heroes,&rdquo; said young Roberto. &ldquo;I never dreamed I&rsquo;d ever get to play on a line with them. As for assisting on Jean&rsquo;s 500th goal, it&rsquo;s just too much. It&rsquo;s terrific.&rdquo;Beliveau&rsquo;s next target is his 700th NHL assist. In the 6-2 win over the North Stars, Big Jean complimented his hat-trick with an assist (his 696th) on Frank Mahovlich&rsquo;s goal.How about goal No. 600 since he refuses to say whether or not this will be his last NHL season?&ldquo;That&rsquo;s a long way off when you think of scoring one at a time,&rdquo; replied Jean who took 1,101 games to score 500.Of course, Beliveau saved the puck and stick involved in the big goal.&ldquo;For the moment am going to keep them. But I&rsquo;ll probably wind up giving them to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Hockey has been very good to me and feel it would be a gesture on my part to give these things to the hall. <div class="byline">BY GIL SMITH</div><div class="image-hero"><img title="f0003-01" src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01738/3049347-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg"></div>MONTREAL &mdash;Over the years, many hockey scribes have written about Eddie Shore and most have been confronted with the same problem; the over-abundance of material versus the limitations of space.Born in 1902 in Ft. Qu&rsquo;Appelle, Sask., of Irish heritage, Shore was to become one of the greatest, toughest, most colorful and most controversial figures that hockey has ever known.He began his career as a forward with the Regina Caps, but converted to defense soon after. He turned pro with Regina in 1925, and the following year shifted to Edmonton where he was tabbed with the monniker &ldquo;The Edmonton Express&rdquo; for his headlong rushes down the ice. That was in the Western Hockey League, then being run by the Patrick brothers, but the league folded and the Patricks sold the players to various NHL teams. Shore went to Boston Bruins, where, from 1927 to 1940, he made history as one of the AllTime great defensemen.In his first season in the NHL, Shore set a penalty record of 130 minutes in 40 games, but still managed 12 goals and six assists to outscore all but the three top Boston forwards. His rushing style had an electrifying effect on audiences, and it was obvious from the outset that Shore was going to draw the crowds wherever he played. He was the game&rsquo;s first rushing defenseman. As for aggressiveness, he was almost in a class by himself. Strong as the proverbial ox, he was a willing mixer and seemed bereft of fear.Before Shore was finished, he had taken no less than 978 stitches, and had racked up a staggering 1,037 minutes in penalties in 603 games. With that kind of aggressiveness, it was almost inevitable that he&rsquo;d be involved in some kind of catastrophe; and, of course, it happened in 1933 when the tragic Ace Bailey incident occurred in Boston Gardens. The story of Shore&rsquo;s charging of Bailey and the almost fatal consequences to the Leaf player, when he hit his head on the ice, has been told time and again over the years.Had he been anything less than truly great, Shore would have been written off as a brawler of the worst ilk; but his talent was immense. Four times he was awarded the Hart Trophy as the game&rsquo;s most valuable player &hellip; a record that stood for 20 years, till Gordie Howe matched it in 1958, then topped it two years later. Shore still remains the only rearguard to have won the MVP that often. He also made eight All-Star teams, seven of them of the No. 1 variety. And he was, of course, the cement in the Boston defense, the model after which many another rockribbed Bruin rearguard tried to pattern himself. Babe Seibert, Dit Clapper, Flash Hollett, Jack Portland and Jack Crawford were among those who partnered him on defense, after Lionel Hitchman left, and all sought to learn from Shore. All did, to varying degrees, but not one outshone him, and most never came close.Despite his slam-bang style of play on the ice, Shore was in the NHL for 10 years before running into his first really serious injury. It happened in the 1936-37 season, when he suffered a broken vertebrae and missed all but 18 games. He bounced back for two more good seasons with the Bruins, however, and was a powerful force in their league &mdash; title and Stanley Cup win of 1938-39. Bruins had finished 16 points ahead of the New York Rangers in the regular schedule, that season, and the Broadway Blues were intent on revenge when the teams met in the Cup rounds. The series went the limit, seven games, Bruins taking the finale 4-3, and four of the games needed overtime.At one point. Shore got into a brawl with Muzz Patrick, who played defense for Rangers, but it was a tactical error on Eddie&rsquo;s part. Patrick, a strapping 200 lbs., had been Canadian Heavyweight Boxing Champion before turning to pro hockey, and he broke Shore&rsquo;s nose. It was a great year for the Bruins, however, as they went on to eliminate Toronto in five games for their first Cup victory in 10 seasons.For Shore, the prospect of retirement was becoming very real in 1939. But, typically, he went about it in a very different way. He bought the Springfield Indians, now of the American League, and operated it &mdash; not as playing coach, or manager &mdash; but, as playing owner! But a hitch developed. The 1939-40 Bruins got off to a shaky start and Art Ross approached Shore about a comeback. Eddie agreed only to play in home games, and when this arrangement didn&rsquo;t pan out, Shore was traded to the New York Americans. He finished the season playing for both the Amerks and the Indians. His last NHL appearance was in the playoffs against Detroit on March 24, 1940.His histrionics as owner of the Springfield club almost defy belief. Some thought his methods wild, but his authority was absolute. His 1966 edition walked outen masse on him. He sold out to Jack Kent Cooke in 1967 for a cool million &mdash; this for a franchise he had paid $42,000 for back in 1940. Some say Cooke got the short end of the deal. If so, he&rsquo;s in good company. Greatness, Controversy Swirled Around Career, Life Of Eddie Shore

The injury-plagued center, one of the few American-born players in the NHL, was dropped from the club&rsquo;s active roster for alleged insubordination towards coach Jack Gordon. Now williams has had a change of heart and wants the Stars to take him back. Injuries and his wife&rsquo;s sudden and untimely death during the season have given Williams insurmountable problems&hellip; Minnesota &lsquo;brass&rsquo; is still talking about Gump Worsley&rsquo;s incredible 67-shot performance against the tough Boston Bruins recently. Worsley, who 5 said he wouldn&rsquo;t want too many of those kind of nights, set a new club record for handling shots by a goaler in this game. Gump found out first hand how busy fellows like Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito are during a hockey game. Orr fired 13 pucks at Worsley and Espo 10 during the course of a 4-4 tie fending&hellip; The Cleveland Barons toppled the high-flying U.S. Nationals 9-4 in a recent exhibiton in Minneapolis. The Nationals appear to be an up and down club. They trimmed Oklahoma City of the CHL 7-2 one game and then blew an 8-3 decision to Muskegon of the IHL. In the humorous quotes bracket Chicago&rsquo;s Cliff Koroll came up with a good one. After being the victim of a knockout bv Frank Mahovlich he said. &ldquo;Its never expected anything like that from Frank. It shows, you never know who you can trust.&rdquo; &hellip; The Santa Clara Valley Sports writers and Sportscasters Association recently named Charles O. We in St. Louis thought of Red as the whole St. Louis franchise. Red holds most if not all scoring records for the Blues. In regards to Ecclestone we lost a very promising young forward who was very versatile. It is not often that a team can pick up a 42 goal scorer like Unger. Connelly is very underrated as a forward. He should help the Blues.This is a trade that can&rsquo;t be judged immediately for its merits but one which will have to be appraised in a period of time. feel that the Blues pulled off a highway robbery with the Red Wings. also feel that this trade will rival the Phil Esposito trade with the Boston Bruins and Chicago Black Hawks several years ago. have supreme confidence in Scotty Bowman in whatever moves that he makes. Scotty is perhaps the shrewdest young executive in the game today. Scotty hasn&rsquo;t made a bad deal yet. Hawley, of St. Peter&rsquo;s, N.S.Mr. Hawley suggests that the top three American clubs (New York, Boston and Chicago) sell their last two players to a tailend team. This, he maintains in the interest of making both divisions competitive. However, he states that Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver should get preferential draft rights in their respective provinces. Montreal had a preferential draft right for many years, getting the first two French-Canadian picks; thus they were able to maintain their dynasty. If they had the right this year, Gilbert Perreault, one of the few Buffalo bright spots, would be skating for the Canadiens rather than for the Sabres.I do not agree at all with Mr. Hawley&rsquo;s proposal. Maybe it is my mistake, but always though that the idea of a draft was to help the weaker clubs. Therefore, only an injury &mdash; a temporary situation &mdash; would have resulted in a promotion for either Belhumeur or Taylor.&ldquo;Sure, we would both like the opportunity to play in the National League but, with Bernie and Doug playing so well, it was real tough,&rdquo; continued Mike. &ldquo;Now, since Bruce Gamble is 32, maybe our break will come sooner.&rdquo;It is only right that Belhumeur and Taylor await a shot at the big time because they have been two of the reasons the Aces have been leading their division of the American Hockey League.They were being alternated for awhile, but then Coach Eddie Bush decided to stick with the goalie who is hot. strategy which the Flyers have employed with Parent and Favell in the past.&ldquo;I played about six or seven games in a row and guess it&rsquo;s because hadn&rsquo;t been playing badly,&rdquo; reveals Mike. &ldquo;We went on a long road trip and left with a 3.32 (goals-against) average. When we returned, was down to around 3.00.&rdquo;Naturally, Belhumeur is anxious for a chance but really doesn&rsquo;t want to rush things waiting for his opportunity to play in the NHL.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m only 21,&rdquo; he mentions. &ldquo;So I&rsquo;ve got a lot of time. think I&rsquo;m picking up considerable experience the way things are going right now. This is good for me.&ldquo;I figure if keep improving, that big chance is bound to come. When it comes, want to be ready for it. know this experience I&rsquo;m picking up helps because it&rsquo;s not easy being successful in the NHL.Belhumeur had found himself in a peculiar situation last season. <div class="byline">&#x2014;CONRAD</div>PHILADELPHIA&mdash;If the Flyers are going to be in the playoffs this season, their current road trip will be a determining factor.Right now the Flyers are in California for the sandwich games of their seven-game jaunt which will eat up more than two weeks and approximately 10,000 miles.&ldquo;Darn right it&rsquo;s a crucial trip,&rdquo; said Flyers&rsquo; coach Vic Stasiuk. &ldquo;Our playoff situation will depend a lot on how we do. There&rsquo;s a lot at stake.&rdquo;The Flyers had begun the trip with a game in Pittsburgh then visited Minnesota and Buffalo before hitting the West Coast. They had important contests scheduled in Los Angeles, Vancouver and Oakland in that order before heading back East for a game in New-York.At that juncture, the schedule changes into their favor with 10 of the final 18 games at home.Last season the Flyers missed a playoff berth by a single point and part of the blame can be placed on their disastrous final road trip when they got beat in Oakland and L.A. &#9632;

And this season at least, visiting the hospital is nothing new for the Black Hawks.The good news was that on successive nights during the first weekend of the month, Hull moved a bit higher on hockey&rsquo;s honor roll. On Feb. 6 in Minnesota, he propelled three blazing 50-foot or better slap shots past Goalie Gilles Gilbert to key a 6 to 2 Chicago victory and register the 26th hat trick of his career.That evening&rsquo;s work left him tied with Montreal&rsquo;s retired great, Maurice (Rocket) Richard, in career hat tricks.One night later, No. 9 put on a characteristic exhibition of strength and finesse as he registered the only score in the Hawks&rsquo; 1 to 0 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins.The goal was the 544th in his career, tying Richard for second spot on the all-time goal scoring list.The scoring play, a beauty, started in Penguins&rsquo; territory when center Bryan Campbell fed the puck to Hull. First defenseman Bob Woytowich struggled with Hull, trying to muscle him away from the play, and failing. Then it was Bob Blackburn&rsquo;s turn to derail Hull on his course to the net. This, too, failed. Finally Hull carried to the deep left side &mdash; a sharp angle &mdash; and fired the pick into the far upper corner over goalie Les Binkley, who came out slightly.The capacity stadium crowd stood for a long ovation, but less than an hour later it sat stunned as Hull lay motionless on the ice after ramming the left corner boards during a breakaway.He was assisted off the ice, dazed and bruised, and was taken to the hospital for X-rays. Hours later the report came that there was no break, just severe contusions on the right hip and right elbow.&ldquo;I was worried for a moment,&rdquo; said Hawks&rsquo; Coach Billy Reay, &ldquo;but think he got a blow on the head and was more stunned than anything.&rdquo;Hull&rsquo;s absence continued the Hawks&rsquo; season-long health problems, which produced a list of invalids not far short of incredible.&ldquo;I just wonder,&rdquo; Reay mused, &ldquo;if we&rsquo;re ever going to have everybody healthy.&rdquo;During the week the Hawks surpassed a negative mark &mdash; 100 games lost through injuries during the current season. That did not include portions of games missed, or games played with more than the average aches and pains.The list read: Lou Angotti 3, Tony Esposito 3, Doug Jarrett 26. Jerry Korab 2, Cliff Koroll 6, Keith Magnuson 2, Chico Maki 3, Stan Mikita 4, Doug Mohns 20, Eric Nesterenko 1, Jim Pappin 20, Pat Stapleton 2, and Bill White 11.Angotti (cracked ankle) and Korab (strained ligaments) were still counting, while Magnuson (knee) and White (shoulder) were due back shortly.Magnuson, the fiery sophomore defenseman, took the idleness especially hard.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s miserable not playing,&rdquo; he moped. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t miss any games during college and didn&rsquo;t miss any last season. The last time remember being out was during junior hockey, when got a bad cut over my eve.&rdquo;Magnuson tried to coax Reay and Trainer Skip Thayer into letting him play both weekend games, but both parties told him to be patient.Maki summed up the situation aptly. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve never seen anything quite like this. Injuries and more injuries. know one thing &mdash; we&rsquo;re running out of hockey players around here.&rdquo; &#9632;

Bobby Hull: From History To Hospital

<div class="byline">By Bill Libby</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-01814/3049661-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="284" height="361"></div><h2>A Stitch In Time&hellip;</h2>LAST WEEK, WE WROTE about the injuries and illnesses of the Plager brothers of St. Louis &mdash; Barclay, Bobby and Billy. Suffering sympathy pains, we shortly were rushed to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. We took our first stitches. They&rsquo;ve had more than they can count. We got out in time to see Barclay get his nose broken for the 11th time on the Sunday telecast. That&rsquo;s the record. He&rsquo;d already passed our friend, Jerry West. Now all he&rsquo;s going is adding insult to injury.Of course, we don&rsquo;t go around asking for trouble and the Plagers do. Although they are only 29, 27 and 25 years of age, respectively, they have accumulated close to 2,500 minutes in penalties in their professional hockey careers. They&rsquo;ve had more than 39 hours or the equivalant of 13 full games each spent in penalty boxes. By the end of this season, their collective totals should go past two full days. Don&rsquo;t count on finding Bob in the penalty box, however. More likely, he&rsquo;ll be in Australia. Or Arkansas.Which is another story, of the second and final installment of this, our saga ot the Plagers. it someone didn&rsquo;t hit the Plagers in the face with a stick once in a while it would be an upset. But there is more to their tale than to tell of how they are punished for good, honest, aggressive play. They are blithe spirits and there is humor in them. Enough to cause one to pop a few stitches laughing.Bob, the one bachelor of the bunch, is a free soul and swinging spirit. He goes pretty good. Sometimes he&rsquo;s long gone for a long time. One summer he told everyone he was going to Australia, but hid out in Arkansas instead. Winters, he&rsquo;s missed a few curfews and blown a few planes.Once when Bob arrived late, just before a game, Blues&rsquo; vice president Lynn Patrick took him to cask. Bob pleaded, &ldquo;You won&rsquo;t believe what happened to. me. jumped out of bed and looked at the clock.&rsquo; was shocked. looked up at the ceiling and-asked &lsquo;Why always me?&rsquo; Then the ceiling opened, a big finger pointed down at me and a voice said, &lsquo;Cause you bug me, Plager.&rsquo;&rdquo;Lynn laughed, though he long ago learned not to believe all of Bob&rsquo;s stories. Others have had to learn, too. Bob used to get upset at U.S. writers who considered Canada a wilderness. Once when one asked him how old he was, Bob said, &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know. Indians attacked the settlement where my family lived, killed my parents, and burned down the general store where all the records were.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-02724/3049654-1-eng-US/f0008-022.jpg" title="f0008-02" width="544" height="881"><figcaption class="caption-body">BOB PLAGER &hellip;Life Is A Ball</figcaption></div>Another time, when he was spending a summer driving a beer truck, he told a writer he was a beer-taster who had to sample 18 bottles a day to do his job. The writer printed the piece. The brewers&rsquo; association protested. Bob laughed off the lie.He once borrowed a transistor radio from the Blues&rsquo; publicist and sent it home as a present to Ma Plager. Another time he stole teammate Ray Fortin&rsquo;s false teeth on the road and mailed them to Fortin&rsquo;s home. Fortin couldn&rsquo;t eat for three days.Bob also goes around cutting up ties and tying shoes together. One night, Sid Salamon III, the Blues&rsquo; wealthy co-owner, cut off one leg of Bob&rsquo;s trousers while they hung in the dressing room to get even.But Bob had the last laugh. He wore the now-tattered garment to a fancy party the Salamons threw for the team.<h2>It&rsquo;s The System That Counts</h2>THERE WAS A TIME St. Louis leaders pointed to the trade for Red Berenson as the trade which made their team and to Red as the guts of their club. They were upset when he was underrated. Suddenly now he has been traded for Garry Unger. Maybe because, as he said, he was a leader in the players&rsquo; union, maybe not. In any event, the Red Baron no longer leads the Blues. Other key players have gone also. The team is being reshaped. Even new coach Al Arbour has stepped aside so Scotty Bowman can reassume leadership. They say the Blues have a system and so long as they apply this sound system the players are secondary. Perhaps. Unless the Blues fold, no one can argue with their success. The Plagers, hitting people, getting hit, and laughing about it, are part of this system. Perhaps they&rsquo;ll be the next to go.There was a time, too, not so long ago, when Sid Abel said Detroit&rsquo;s deal for Unger was the best his club had made in years. Unger was a young hero in Detroit and hailed as a coming superstar. Less than one year later, Unger has been dealt off. And Abel is gone, too. In hockey, it helps to laugh. Sometimes the things that happen hurt too much if taken seriously. These are only human lives being talked about and passed around, after all.Recently we wrote a column about how criticism by writers, including this one, seemed to have inspired Denis DeJordy of the Kings to playing the best goal of his life. Not that he would admit it. He admitted he was annoyed by the criticism. But he admitted also his wife said he deserved it. And he insisted that after a lot of years in this business, he was used to it.He said, instead, that perhaps the best reason for his resurgence might have been that his wife was watching him to make sure he didn&rsquo;t wear a certain suit. It seems he lost every time he wore it. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not superstitious, you understand,&rdquo; he smiled. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just that since stopped wearing it, must admit I&rsquo;ve been playing bet? ter.&rdquo; We talked awhile about the problems of writing critically abouts slumping player the writer likes personally. After awhile, Denis lapsed into silence, staring at the floor. Finally, he said, &ldquo;Jeez, I&rsquo;d sure like to wear that suit sometimes. It&rsquo;s not a bad suit, you know. It cost me a hundred-and-a-quarter.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY TOM MONAHAN</div>BOSTON&mdash;Individually and collectively the Bruins figure again to lug home a sizeable chunk of the National Hockey League&rsquo;s hardware when the smoke has cleared from this season&rsquo;s 78-game schedule and Stanley Cup playoffs.Phil Esposito is virtually assured of regaining the Art Ross Trophy as leading scorer, there is no one in sight to relieve Bobby Orr of the Norris Trophy as outstanding defenseman and the addition of the Prince of Wales Trophy to the Stanley Cup are within the team&rsquo;s grasp.At least one other award should fall their way as well with Johnny Bucyk as the most outstanding candidate in the league for the Lady Byng Trophy.The Byng Trophy was originated in i925 by the wife of Canada&rsquo;s then Governor General for the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.It has been awarded to only two Bruins in all this time. The late Bobby Bauer won it three times and the last was Don McKenney, currently freshman coach at Northeastern University, in 1959-60.While at one time there may have been a stigma attached to this particular award, that certainly no longer is true.The key is sportsmanship combined with a high standard of playing ability and certainly no one in the NHL qualifies on both counts more than the Chief.Now approaching his 36th birthday, Bucyk is playing his 14th season with the Bruins and is on the verge of hitting the 350 goal plateau.Not only that, he has survived a back problem that nagged him two years ago and currently is enjoying the finest year of his career.Playing in the first 52 games, Johnny tallied 33 goals and had 40 assists for a total of 73 points to rank fourth among the league&rsquo;s leading scorers.The six-foot, 200-pound veteran still is regarded as the outstanding corner man in the league and is the key man on the Bruins&rsquo; devastating power-play.Using penalty minutes as the yardstick for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, Bucyk consistently is among the league&rsquo;s least penalized players. <div class="byline">BY DWAYNE NETLAND</div>TWIN CITIES&mdash;Tommy Williams&rsquo; National Hockey League career with the Minnesota North Stars came to an abrupt end recently after a torrid exchange of words with coach Jack Gordon.The North Stars dropped Williams off their active roster, although keeping him under contract and on the payroll, and opened attempts to complete a trade for him.The move was taken by general manager Wren Blair at the request of Gordon.Williams was ordered off the ice by Gordon during a practice session last week. The two exchanged words, and Gordon told Williams to see Blair that afternoon.When Williams did not appear for the appointment with his general manager, Gordon and Blair met the following day to make the announcement.&ldquo;Tommy had broken our club rules several times during the season,&rdquo; Gordon explained later. &ldquo;This wasn&rsquo;t the first incident I&rsquo;ve had with him.&ldquo;I can&rsquo;t have one set of rules for the team and another for one individual, and won&rsquo;t have an insubordinate player.&rdquo;Blair, a longtime friend and advisor of Williams, said Tommy would benefit from a trade that would take him away from his home area.Williams is a native of Duluth, Minn., one of the few American-born players in the NHL.In the 1969-70 season he teamed with J.P. Parise and Bill Goldsworthy on the second-highest scoring line in the NHL, a line that accounted for 204 total points. Williams contributed 67, including a Minnesota club record of 52 assists.This season, struggling through a variety of physical and emotional setbacks, he had scored 11 goals and 23 assists while missing 10 games.Tommy&rsquo;s troubles began when he incurred a back ailment early in training camp. He aggravated it just before the regular season was to open. Last November his wife, Emma, died, leaving him with five children.Williams has never recovered from that tragedy.Gordon allowed for all of that in his relationship with Williams, which deteriorated steadily during the last month. In his last game with Minnesota, against Detroit on Feb. 3, Williams was benched after playing briefly in the first period.While the high-strung player did not talk publicly about his dismissal from the North Stars, he had predicted three weeks ago that he would move on to another club. Tommy was most unhappy with Gordon for (1) Breaking up the Goldsworthy-Williams-Parise line: (2) Removing Murray Oliver from the line he had shared with Williams and Parise; and (3) Being benched.&ldquo;Our line went great last season.&rdquo; Williams had said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know why it was broken up. Then we had another good line going, and that was changed around. don&rsquo;t know where stand around here anymore.&rdquo;Williams had threatened to quit hockey several weeks ago. and he may do so now. But he is only 30, with five children to support, and he would be hard pressed to match his hockey salary in another job.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m sorry it had to work out this wav,&rdquo; Blair said. &ldquo;Tommy gave us one great season, and thanked him for that. But I&rsquo;m certainly going to back up my coach in a situation like this.&ldquo;And strongly believe Tommy would be better off playing in another area, away from the pressures of his home state.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY DAN PROUDFOOT</div>TORONTO&mdash;Bernie Parent didn&rsquo;t realize the contrast between an expansion team and a successful established team until he moved from Philadelphia Fivers to Toronto Maple Leafs treats and felt the difference.Parent, the 25-year-old goaltender for whom Leafs gave up Mike Walton, Bruce Gamble and their first choice in the spring draft of over-age juniors, noted the difference in attitude within hours of joining Leafs.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s amazing,&rdquo; he said after sitting on the bench in his first game in Leaf uniform. &ldquo;Each team thinks differently, you know, and it&rsquo;s different with an established team.&ldquo;They&rsquo;ve got more confidence. Like here it&rsquo;s, &lsquo;c&rsquo;mon, this is a home game and we gotta win.&rsquo; Whereas in Philadelphia it&rsquo;s &lsquo;let&rsquo;s check up and down and wait for the breaks.&rsquo;&ldquo;In Philadelphia, they want to make the playoffs, but here the guys know they have a chance for the Stanley Cup, even if Boston is strong. It&rsquo;s the first time I&rsquo;ve experienced that kind of thinking. It feels good.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01807/3049868-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="261" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bernie Parent</figcaption></div>Parent may notice a slightly different attitude among his teammates when they play in Boston, mind you. Leafs haven&rsquo;t won there since March, 1968, and an opening blitz by the Bruins usually deflates the team.But Leaf coach John McLellan and general manager Jim Gregory believe Parent is the kind of player who&rsquo;s ideal for a building team. Frank (King) Clancy stated in one report that Parent was not only the best young goaltender in the league, but one who would be good for 10 years. Later, he claimed he was misquoted. He meant 15 years.Parent had mixed emotions about the trade. He hated to leave his friendship with Doug Favell, the remaining No. 1 Philadelphia goaltender. But he moved to Toronto feeling like a disciple come to study under the Great Maharishi, namely Jacques Plante, Leafs&rsquo; 42-year-old goaltender.&ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t talk with Doug or any of the players before left,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I was too emotional, you know.&rdquo;But then he started to think about the goaltending talent he could tap in Toronto. &ldquo;When Ernie Wakely went to St. Louis he was just another goaltender. After working with Plante for a season he became a West AllStar.&ldquo;I&rsquo;ll take everything Plante tells me, you better believe. Next season may be the East goalie in the All Star game.&ldquo;I need to work on my play with the goalstick. Plante is fantastic at fielding and passing pucks. And Johnny Bower (who coaches goalies in the Leaf system) has the great poke-check. hope can learn that from him.&rdquo;Coach McLellan immediately was impressed by Parent&rsquo;s work, both in practice and in his first start &mdash; a tough 4-3 win in Buffalo. Bower and Plante were similarly impressed.For Parent, the toughest thing about Toronto may prove to be the original drive from Philadelphia. He decided to move his family immediately. Ray Marell, a Flyer fan from Berlin, N.J., was recruited to drive a second car, and the Parent-Marell team headed out on a Tuesday, Feb. 2.Parent had to be on the bench, backing up Plante, Feb. 3, so he planned to arrive the same day he left Philadelphia. Snow at Syracuse, N.Y., ruined the idea. Parent, his family, Marell and his wife had to stay overnight at Kingston, Ont., and he didn&rsquo;t arrive until 10:45 a.m., the day of the game &mdash; in time for the team meeting.Toronto, by the way, is the second establishment team (meaning it belonged to the original six-team group before the 1967 explosion) Parent has played for. The other, Boston, came before expansion, when the Bruins were bunglers. The feeling, he emphasizes, was not the same as in Toronto.&ldquo;It was hell.&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Everynight, I&rsquo;d think How many goals are they going to score on me tonight?&rdquo; &#9632;

Maybe it doesn&rsquo;t matter.Seems like they take turns playing the superstar role.One game it&rsquo;s newly arrived Syl Apps Jr. Then it&rsquo;s Val Fonteyne, known for his checking.Like he scores two goals when Coach Red Kelly decides to add a fourth line against Chicago &mdash; a checking line no less &mdash; and Fonteyne, the 155-pound checker becomes Fonteyne the 155-pound scorer tor the first time in 43 games.Meet Rod Zaine, an addition to the list of recent Penguin &ldquo;Heroes for a day.&rdquo;Zaine may or not be with the Penguins when you read this, but don&rsquo;t bet that he won&rsquo;t<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-01798/3049972-1-eng-US/f0011-012.jpg" title="f0011-01" width="270" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Rod Zaine</figcaption></div>A rookie, he was brought up from the Pens&rsquo; Amarillo farm team in the CHL about two months ago when injuries hit the club.He&rsquo;s a left shooting center who sometimes plays right wing. Except that when you play for Kelly, you&rsquo;ve got to be versatile. Zaine is.It was a game against the California Golden Seals or whatever they&rsquo;re called now.Kelly put Zaine at left wing for the night. He wanted to use a fourth line again and injuries have given him a problem so he moved Zaine to the left.Zaine responded with two goals and just missed his first National Hockey League hat trick.The 24-year-old Zaine, working on a bachelor&rsquo;s degree (he&rsquo;s that too) in the off season led the Pens to their fifth straight home victory, a 6-1 victory over the Seals.&ldquo;He (Kelly) hasn&rsquo;t really had a chance to evaluate me.&rdquo; Zaine said after the game. &ldquo;But I think I&rsquo;ve been playing better.&rdquo;&ldquo;The main thing I wanted Rod to do is check.&rdquo; said Kelly. &ldquo;But that&rsquo;s the funny part of this game. It you do a checking job. that&rsquo;s when you often score.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s up to him.&rdquo; Kelly continued. &ldquo;This is the best I&rsquo;ve ever seen him play. There&rsquo;sno way he goes back if he keeps playing like this.&rdquo;Zaine gave the Pens a 1-0 lead in the first period by knocking in a rebound shot.He scored again midway in the second period on a nifty spin around backhanded shot after taking pass in front of the net from defenseman Bob Woytowich, who incidentally, got his fifth assist in as many games.Zaine had his chance for a three-goal hat trick in the final period, but missed on a breakaway.PEN SCRIBBLINGS: Goalie Les Binkley gets a charge out of old pictures of his without his mask in goal. &ldquo;I sort of laugh when I see other pictures of what it looked like.&rdquo; he said. Bink, who has been sensational in goal &mdash; he had a five game streak where he was unbeaten and a goals against average of just over 2.00 says the mask hasn&rsquo;t necessarily made his more confident. &ldquo;I know I got a few whacks on it where I definitely would have had some cuts&rdquo; &hellip; Defenseman Dune McCallum, playing perhaps better now than any at point in the last two years, scored a beautiful unassisted goal against the Seals, dekeing out one defenseman, then working his way on goal before finally faking out goalie Gary Smith. &ldquo;They don&rsquo;t expect you to score,&rdquo; said McCallum, &ldquo;so when you do it&rsquo;s a bonus, just to let them know you can.&rdquo; &hellip; Zaine calls Kelly &ldquo;a good psychologist. He&rsquo;s never overjoyed at anything you do. but maybe that&rsquo;s good. I used to think I was a checker. But I&rsquo;m finding out there&rsquo;s more to learn.&rdquo; &hellip; Zaine may be a rare one in one way. He says he would prefer to watch baseball than hockey &hellip; &ldquo;That&rsquo;s a game of science.&rdquo; &#9632;

NHL PLAYER SCORING PENALTY RECORDS

Never in its history has the Red Wing Alumni Associaton had so many new candidates for membership.If all the Old Boys show up at one time in the future they&rsquo;ll have to find a separate room for the Class of &rsquo;70-71&hellip;maybe the grand ballroom of the Sheraton Cadillac.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-01768/3050212-1-eng-US/f0013-012.jpg" title="f0013-01" width="266" height="440"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bruce MacGregor</figcaption></div>This has been some kind of year around Olympia and you almost can near the circus barker shouting &ldquo;You ain&rsquo;t seen nothing yet!&rdquo;Really though, it does-seem that the phenomenal number of trades is about over &hellip; there still could be one big one. for a goalkeeper, but the work up front appears to be over for now. The Wings made a big pitch for Doug Favell and lost out.General manager Ned Harkness worked those two big deals with New York and St. Louis six days apart and. combined with his first big swap with Montreal, it seems the Red Wing brass has the team headed in the direction it wants.That direction is toward a fast-skating. two-way team, a youthful team.In all the dealing it became obvious that the only untouchables left are Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio who are as much Detroit landmarks as the Penobscot Building and Belle Isle.And in the dealing a case could be made that Harkness dispatched everyone who disagreed with him.Pete Stemkowski was the first Red Wing to depart during the season and since-resigned general manager Sid Abel said he traded Stemkowski because he was out of shape and that Harkness insisted on trading him.Bob Baun&rsquo;s departure was an Abel move &mdash; he thought Baun was past his prime and wanted Harkness to play the younger defensemen. Baun since has been a huge contributor to the Toronto defense.Harkness&rsquo; first move as general manager was to trade Frank Mahovlich and his second was to deal Bruce MacGregor. Those two figured large in the behind the scenes activity that led to Harkness being booted upstairs as general manager after Abel&rsquo;s fiery resignation and the appointment of Doug Barkley as coach.MacGregor was the Wings&rsquo; player representative and it was the feeling of the entire team that he should contact NHL Players&rsquo; Association director Alan Eagleson when the front office was being ripped asunder.Eagleson moved into the picture and had conferences with club owner Bruce Norris and executive director Jim Bishop and there&rsquo;s a strong indication that Barkley&rsquo;s permanent appointment &mdash; initially Harkness said Barkley would be interim coach and that Harkness himself might return to the bench &mdash; was due to player pressure.&ldquo;I&rsquo;d hate to speculate that was the reason for my being traded and I hope that isn&rsquo;t it.&rdquo; MacGregor said. But he added: &ldquo;Frank (Mahovlich) and I were the ones who brought Eagleson in that Sunday&hellip; and we&rsquo;re both gone.&rdquo;Garry Unger, also traded after Harkness called him &ldquo;an untouchable&rdquo; in January, was critical of Harkness several times in newspaper stories and on radio interviews.Certainly that must have figured in the dealing some way. But they weren&rsquo;t the sole reasons. There had been a feeling for some time that while MacGregor was a great hustler, he was not a strong offensive player either as a playmaker or scorer.Mahovlich never has been a strong back checker and the complaints about him playing his own kind of game go back to his years in Toronto when he so exasperated Maple Leaf fans who felt he should go full tilt all the time. When Mahovlich is &ldquo;on&rdquo;, few players can match him. It was felt he was &ldquo;off&rdquo; more than &ldquo;on&rdquo;, however.Of Unger, Barkley said: &ldquo;We lost him. &ldquo;He just wouldn&rsquo;t work for me. We didn&rsquo;t trade him because of his hair. We traded him strictly on ability and attitude.&ldquo;Garry just didn&rsquo;t put out for me. I talked to him about this the moment I took over the club I wanted him to be one of the leaders &hellip; I asked him if he would come out early for &ldquo;practices and if he would work hard in practice to serve as an example to the rest of the players.&ldquo;But he wouldn&rsquo;t do it. He&rsquo;s just got too many other things on his mind,&rdquo; Barkley said of the mod 23-year-old center.Unger scored 42 goals last season, second only to Phil Esposito, but he was a disappointment in the Stanley Cup playoffs getting just one assist as Chicago erased Detroit in four straight.Even before that Unger got into the doghouse. That final Sunday, whe, New York slipped in fourth place by bombing the Wings, 9-5, Unger said on national TV that the Wings partied so much the night before, after clinching third by beating New York, that they were down Sunday.Then Unger let his hair grow to his shoulders during the summer, grew a mustache and, on the eve of training camp, injured his back in a diving board accident.Nothing went right and the hair hassle began between Unger and Harkness. But even more, Unger didn&rsquo;t play well. For a center his goals and assists ratio was far, far down the list of pivotmen. Even when he scored his 42 goals last season he set up only 24 and that&rsquo;s a tremendous imbalance for a center. &#9632;

ALLAN STANLEY’S BEEHIVE HOCKEY CAMP

<div class="byline">BY JOHN PORTER</div>OAKLAND&mdash;The California Golden Seals have been shut out only twice in 53 games would seem to be a lair track record for a last-place team in the National Hockey Leauge.However, the golden ones aren&rsquo;t too much in the scoring department. In 15 games, they&rsquo;ve scored once and in 18 others just twice.The club has had a weaker scoring punch than the stuff they ladle out at a temperance party.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-01766/3050567-1-eng-US/f0014-012.jpg" title="f0014-01" width="264" height="431"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ron Stackhouse</figcaption></div>A series of five straight losses graphically illustrates the point. The Sals fell to Buffalo, 4-2, Minnesota, 7-1, Pittsburgh, 6-1, Montreal, 3-2, and Detroit, 5-2, between Jan. 29 and Feb. 7.That&rsquo;s eight goals in five games, and even a couple of the scores were a little suspect. Norm Ferguson got one against the Sabres when the puck bounced off his chin into the net and Gary Croteau was credited with another when Montreal&rsquo;s Jacques Lemaire blooped the puck into the wrong net.If you discount two well-scored goals by rookie defenseman Ron Stackhouse and the pair of afore-mentioned questionables, that leaves just four goals contributed by the forwards.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had a lot of chances and missed since the beginning of the year,&rdquo; moaned winger Bill Hicke who scored against Detroit to break a personal 10-game slump. &ldquo;Everybody on the team is in on it, not just one guy. We&rsquo;re just not sharp.&rsquo;&rsquo;His coach was equally beweildered.&ldquo;There&rsquo;s been a breakdown in all areas,&rdquo; conceded Fred Glover. &ldquo;You can&rsquo;t put the onus on one thing. Sometimes it&rsquo;s the goal-tending, then the forwards, or then the defensemen.&rdquo;Still, in the year of the grades, the Seals remained dormant at the bargaining table. Bsieged by the local press to make a deal, Glover explained his position calmly.&ldquo;We&rsquo;re not going to trade out of panic,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Sure, I talk to other clubs every day, but they want too much and aren&rsquo;t willing to give up anything.&rdquo;It&rsquo;s no secret that the name which comes up most often during such conversations is Carol Vadnais. There are draft choices Glover could swap, but he&rsquo;s made it clear the Seals aren&rsquo;t going to do that anymore.SEALS SHOTS: One move California did make was to sell veteran defenseman Harry Howell to Los Angeles Feb. 4 &hellip; Howell was extremely popular in the Bay Area, but Glover is keen on a youth movement for the Seals &hellip; Wingers Barry Boughner, 23, and Hilliard Graves, 20, were added to the Seals roster for the Montreal game and the coach praised them for their hustle on Mile Laughton&rsquo;s line&hellip; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div><h4>Francis Wanted Defensive Strength In Trades</h4>NEW YORK&mdash;&ldquo;When I joined the Rangers. Arnie Brown was one of the foundations of the team. Last season he got 15 goals, second only to Bobby Orr in the entire National Hockey League. Yes. you would have to say I was shocked when 1 heard he was traded.&rdquo; said Brad Park, the Rangers fine third year defenseman.&ldquo;It was hard to trade Arnie.&rdquo; said General Manager-Coach Emile Francis. &ldquo;He was a fine hard working guy, very articulate and a credit to hockey. I wish him luck in Detroit, but we felt we made a good trade which would help the team. In Larry Brown and Bruce MacGregor we got two men who will play a good brand of defensive hockey for us. Larry Brown did wonders in our 1-0 win over the Wings in Detroit on February 4. He stays in position and is not caught up ice.&rdquo;This perhaps was the key reason for the swap in which the 29 year old former Toronto Maple Leaf rearguard moved on to Detroit. He was caught up ice on numerous occasions this season. Since Park was the offensive defenseman in the Arnie BrownPark combo, it would have been smarter if Arnie had played it straight and stayed back a bit.Nonetheless, Ranger fans wish Brownie the best of luck and hope he is a big success with the Wings. He should help the Detroit break out play and fit in real well. Detroit&rsquo;s weakness has been iii getting the puck out of their own end since Carl Brewer retired.Mike Robitaille may also help the Wings, but New York feels that they have at least two more defensemen in Omaha of the Central League, who are better than Mike. They are Ab DeMarco. who did so well in the playoffs last season, when called upon in an emergency situation, and Andre Dupont, the hard hitting rearguard who formerly played for the Montreal Junior Canadiens.The deal in which MacGregor joined the Rangers has to give Francis more depth up front. He shifted Bob Nevin from the checking line to the Walt Tkaczuk. Dave Balon trio and put Mac with Peter Stemkowski and Ted Irvine. This put hard working Billy Fairbairn on the bench in the Detroit game, but things turned around fast on February 6 in Vancouver when Fairbairn finally got on the ice in the second period. Three seconds later he ripped a 25 looter past George Gardner and still later he scored a second goal on a power. These markers upped Billy&rsquo;s goal total to 7 for the season and may help him overcome the loss of confidence suffered from missing a month with a bout with mononucleosis.&ldquo;Billy was down and pressing and those goals have to help him a lot.&rdquo; said a teammate.Both Fairbairn and Balon got two goals in the Vancouver 5-4 win. This was due to the superb work of Tkaczuk who was the best man on the ice in this game. Rod Gilbert, now on a patented Gilbert style hot streak fired the winner. It was his 21st goal, five more than his entire total for 19(59-70 and left Rod with a good chance for thirty goals, something he has never achieved.&ldquo;I have my confidence now.&rdquo; said a jubilant Gilbert on the plane ride back from the British Columbia city. &ldquo;They are going in and my entire game is improving.&rdquo;Gilbert&rsquo;s goal gave him 478 points which tied him with Camille Henry for the runnerup spot in career points as a Ranger. The leader is Andy Bathgate with 729.On the defensive side of the ledger, Gilles Villemure won two straight games, at Detroit and Vancouver, after Eddie Giacomin lost to Chicago in Madison Square Garden on February 3. This loss stopped the Rangers bid to tie or break the all time NHL record for unbeaten play at home. Montreal held the standard, with 28. New York City may have become surfeited with the success of such as the Jets. Mets. Knicks and Yankees over the years, but still it is hard to understand booing a team which loses its first home game in February.The defensive combinations are now set with Larry Brown working with Park and Jim Neilson still partnering Rod Seiling. Villemure&rsquo;s two straight games were the first time ever he played two in a row and the guess here is that Francis may now play a winning goalie game in and game out until he loses. This would include contests against Boston, against whom Gilles has never shown.Although still in arrears of the Bruins with a clutch game due in Boston as this went to press. New York has an excellent chance to catch the Beantowners. The Rangers are finished with their five, count them, trips to the West Coast, whereas the Bruins still have taken only one trip out to the bad lands. They have two big Coast trips and a stretch of 12 of 16 games on the road coming up. Bolstered Rangers Still Eyeing Bruins

LOUIS&mdash;The loyal St. Louis hockey fans had a bombshell dropped into their laps when Red Berenson, the Blues&rsquo; captain and leading scorer, was traded with Tim Ecclestone to the Detroit Red Wings.The fact that 42-goal scorer Garry Unger and veteran Wayne Connelly were acquired by the Blues in the trade was of little immediate consolation to the St. Louis fans. They had been thrilled many times over nearly four seasons by the Red Baron and by the strong, young Ecclestone, a player with a quick shot who was selected to play in his first All-Star game this year.Berenson had become a sacred cow in St. Louis, where the skyrocketing success of major-league hockey had paralleled his own career. He was generally considered the first superstar produced by the Western Division and led the Blues as the standard-bearers of the West in their valiant struggles against the established East. Red once scored six goals in a game, and St. Louis fans believed that he could do anything. His fellow players respected Red, and, when Al Arbour became coach, the appointment of Berenson as captain was as logical as putting one foot in front of another to take a step.Blues&rsquo; general manager Scotty Bowman was probably prepared for the fans&rsquo; reaction and he made very clear that the reason for the trade was that the Blues really wanted Unger.Unger is rated by almst everyone in the league as one of the top three young players in hockey,&rdquo; Bowman said. &ldquo;We feel we can build something for a long time, and Unger can be a member of the first Stanley Cup team the Blues have.&rdquo;Bowman recognized the fans&rsquo; feelings when he said. &ldquo;We made few changes the first three years, but now some changes are necessary.&rdquo;The shocked fans waited only 24 hours for the next big announcement out of the Blues&rsquo; offices. Arbour was returning to the ice as a player, and Bowman returning to the bench as coach. The two men said they had discussed the maneuver and agreed that the changes, although maybe not personally pleasing, were for the good of the team, hopelessly behind the front-running Chicago Black Hawks in the Western Division and wanting to be in the best possible form for the playoffs.So, although the fans would miss the helmeted No. 7 and the tall, handsome No. 14. they would certainly be glad to once again watch the tall, bespectacled No. 3. blocking shots and quarterbacking the efforts on the ice.Berenson and Ecclestone were as sad about the big trade as were their fans. Neither wanted to leave St. Louis nor the organization which had been spectacularly successful in the hazardous endeavor of expansion hockey. Berenson claimed that he was traded because he is president of the National Hockey League Players Association &mdash; a post to which he was reelected at the time of the All Star game in Boston. Ecclestone had also become involved with the Players Association: he was elected the Blues player representative to the association the week before the trade.&ldquo;I feel this is the major reason the trade was made.&rdquo; Berenson said. &ldquo;Management throughout the league feels very strongly about the association.I don&rsquo;t think I would have been traded if I were not involved in the association.&rdquo; Bowman rejected this line of reasoning.&ldquo;The Players Association had nothing whatsoever to do with the trade.&rdquo; Bowman said. &ldquo;We made the trade for two reasons &mdash; one, we wanted to build around youth, and, two, we really wanted Unger.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0017-04287/3050681-1-eng-US/f0017-042.jpg" title="f0017-04" width="1152" height="1009"><figcaption class="caption-body">Two former members of the Detroit Red Wings are shown in their new St. Louis blue and white after last week&rsquo;s major trade. Blues Hope To Build Winner Around Unger

<div class="byline">BY CHARLEY BARTON</div><h4>Duff Plays In 1,000th NHL Game</h4>BUFFALO&mdash;The high-flying Buffalo Sabres were slowed down by a weekend of faulty starts as their late-season drive for an East Division playoff berth ran into a pair of open switches.The Sabres followed their most successful inyasion of the West Coast with a 5-2 win here over the Los Angeles Kings. A 3-3 tie opened the Western tour in Los Angeles, and the Sabres added a 4-2 win at Oakland and a 6-1 decision in Vancouver.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-01497/3050719-1-eng-US/f0018-012.jpg" title="f0018-01" width="267" height="437"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dick Duff</figcaption></div>They carried a three-game winning streak into Boston, where the champion Bruins had lathered them, 8-2, under a 72-shot barrage earlier in the season. The Bruins, held off by the fine goaltending of Joe Daley, grabbed a 4-0 lead, and hung on for a 4-3 squeaker.The next night, the Toronto Maple Leafs came into Buffalo, jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes, and had to hang on for a 4-3 decision.The losses to the Leafs and the Bruins placed major roadblocks in the Sabres&rsquo; path to the playoffs. Earlier, they had lost only one of their previous 10 games, with six wins and three ties in the streak. The optimism was hard to curtail.The Sabres&rsquo; offered the hottest entertainment ticket in town, and the throng of 10,512 which watched the fourth-place Leafs move 17 points ahead of Buffalo was the 12th sellout crowd in 27 games.With 27 games remaining as this was being written. Sabres’ Late Playoff Drive Stalled

<div class="byline">BY HAL SIGURDSON</div>VANCOUVER&mdash;It may only be coincidence, but when Hal Laycoe was winning all those Western Hockey League pennants with the Portland Buckaroos, he always had several players from Saskatoon and at least one would answer to the name Schmautz.Today Laycoe is hoping Bobby Schmautz, youngest of the Saskatoon hockey family, can help pull his Vancouver Canucks out of a slump that has seen them drop into last place in the National Hockey League&rsquo;s eastern division.Unable to complete a trade with any of his NHL partners, Vancouver general manager Bud Poile swung a deal with the WHL Seattle Totems.The Canucks came away with Bobby Schmautz, a 25-year-old right winger, while the WHL club received Vancouver forwards Jim Wiste and Ed Hatoum on loan for the balance of the season. The Totems also have the option to buy the contracts of either or both players when the year is over.Lavcoe says he&rsquo;s delighted to have&rdquo; a Schmautz back in his lineup.&ldquo;Until I went to Los Angeles last season I always had at least one of them with me. Maybe I can&rsquo;t coach without them,&rdquo; he grinned.The now retired Arnie Schmautz turned pro with the New Westminster Royals the year Laycoe began coaching and went with him to Victoria and Portland.Cliff Schmautz, now with the Philadelphia Flyers, spent 6&frac12; years playing for Laycoe&rsquo;s Portland clubs.The acquisition of Bobby Schmautz completes the family circle, but as far as Laycoe is concerned the 5-foot-10, 165-pound winger has more to contribute than his name.&ldquo;He skates well, he&rsquo;s a good checker and he shoots even harder than Cliff,&rdquo; Laycoe enthused. &ldquo;He got a taste of the NHL with the Chicago Black Hawks, so I&rsquo;m sure he&rsquo;s delighted to get another chance to play in the league.&rdquo;Bobby spent the entire 1968-69 season with the Black Hawks where he scored nine goals and seven assists as a spot player.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-01477/3050750-1-eng-US/f0019-012.jpg" title="f0019-01" width="532" height="568"><figcaption class="caption-body">BOBBY SCHMAUTZ &hellip;Gets Second Chance</figcaption></div>The next season, he became the original man in motion. The Hawks traded him to St. Louis, who in turn dealt him to Montreal as part of the deal that brought goaltender Ernie Wakely to the Blues. Montreal sold him to Salt Lake City of the WHL and Salt Lake sent him to Seattle in exchange for veteran Guyle Fielder.Despite all this, Schmautz scored 32 WHL goals last season.Poile is convinced he can also be an effective scorer in the NHL.&ldquo;I figure he&rsquo;ll get us between 10 and 15 goals before the end of the season,&rdquo; he said optimistically.Poile may be setting his sights too high, but Schmautz will get a chance to increase his production by playing the point on the Vancouver power play.CANUCK CAPERS: Ted Taylor ended a drought that had become &ldquo;downright embarrassing&rdquo; by scoring his first goal of the season against the Rangers&hellip;It was the left winger&rsquo;s 30th game of the season&hellip;The Canucks dropped a 5-4 decision to the Rangers, but at least had the satisfaction of scoring three power play goals against the Broadway Blues &hellip; &ldquo;That&rsquo;s the most power play goals we&rsquo;ve given up in one game all season,&rdquo; said general manager-coach Emile Francis. &#9632;

Slumping Canucks Hope Schmautz Can Help Stem Slide

<div class="byline">BY TOM BURKE</div>BOSTON&mdash;ECAC Division One&rsquo;s merry campaign of confounding the contenders continued unabated through the first week of February. Featured games were a 2-1 overtime win for Clarkson over Cornell and a 4-1 dumping of the Golden Knights three nights later by Boston University. Both will have significant bearing on the final standings.Elswewhere, RPI remained undefeated in divisional play but received a jolt from Army in the forum of a 4-4 tie at Troy. The standoff won&rsquo;t hurt the Engineers&rsquo; excessively percentagewise, but the seeding committeee will take it into account in assigning the playoff berths come March.Lower bracket playoff contenders Providence, Brown, and Pennsylvania kept plugging away with a conglomerate total of four wins and one loss among them for the week. Harvard came back from exam break to rout Princeton 8-0, and Boston College whipped Northeastern 10-3 in their warmup for the Beanpot Tournament. New Hampshire, not to be outdone, blasted Colgate 15-3 in Hamilton.But the focus remains on the triumvirate of Cornell, Clarkson, and BU. They&rsquo;ve now played a round robin with each team losing once on enemy ice. That&rsquo;s known as balance, and with the addition of always-potent Harvard, the three could make a whale of a playoff weekend in Boston next month.Lenny Ceglarski calls his team&rsquo;s 2-1 overtime win &ldquo;The greatest college hockey game I&rsquo;ve ever seen.&rdquo; Statistically, the affair couldn&rsquo;t have been more balanced. Goalies Brian Cropper and Bruce Bullock each had 31 saves, and the winning goal came with just 42 seconds left in the overtime off the stick of Alf Maki.Cornell, minus Kevin Pettit who had been booted out for fighting in the previous game with Princeton, took al-0 lead as Bill Duthie tallied 1:52 into the second frame. Sophomore Bob Baldwin tallied for the Knights to send the game to OT, and another soph, Brian Mason was responsible for Maki&rsquo;s game winner. Mason knocked down two defenders in retreiving the puck from behind the cage, and he hit Maki directly in front. &#9632;

RPI, Clarkson, Cornell Jolted By ECAC Rivals

Gag&rsquo;s Bulldogs had just lost an overtime heartbreaker 5-4 to Penn which dropped their division slate to 311. The new first line of Brian Bird between Greg Rivet and Greg Luck sparked Yale to wins 6-4 over Dartmouth and 4-3 in overtime with Army. Rivet had a hat trick in Hanover and Luck got the winner over the stubborn Cadets. Roger Demmemt, hambered by a broken nose, centers the second wave between Terry DeMaza and either Ian Gilchrist or John Clark. Things are looking up in New Haven, as the Blueshirts played well in 5-1 losses to powerful BU and Clarkson.BROWN: Al Soares can&rsquo;t say enough about Connie Schmidt, his captain and the team&rsquo;s only senior of note. &ldquo;The kid does it all for us. He kills penalties, plays the power play, digs in the corners everything,&rdquo; enthused the rookie coach. Schmidt plays between soph Mike Powers and junior Dave McCay. As of midyears he had 3-12-15 for second on the team in scoring. No one had more than five goals for the Bruins through 12 games, but it is a young team and everyone seems to chip in a little bit. First two games after break saw Brown beat Princeton 4-2 and blank Army 5-0. &ldquo;The kids have come along well since about the middle of the year said Soares. &ldquo;We could beat everyone on our schedule the rest of the season, but we could go all the way in the other direction too.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-03197/3050812-1-eng-US/f0020-032.jpg" title="f0020-03" width="268" height="476"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dick Gagliardi</figcaption></div>COLGATE: The Red Raiders broke a seven game losing streak in topping St. Lawrence 6-2 in Canton, but were whomped 15-3 by UNH on home ice in the next game. Soph wing Ron Carrigan netted four goals against the Larries after shaking the effects of a broken wrist. The Raiders, now 4-7 in the loop, had been getting healthier but lost Rick Rowell and Tom Coseo with recurring injuries in the UNH game. &ldquo;It was just fantastic, said Ron Ryan. &ldquo;We just let them run away. Our goalie had a bad night too.&rdquo;BOSTON COLLEGE: The Eagles received a four goal show from soph Bob Reardon and a hat from soph Ed Kenty in a 10-3 rout of Northeastern. They also dropped a tough 6-4 decision to Providence on the road. Two of Reardon&rsquo;s goals came within eight seconds of each other in the second period. Reardon, originally a left wing, has been shifted to center in the past five games between Bob Haley and Joe Keaveney. He is still second in the team scoring with 18-17-35. Defenseman Tom Mellor leads with 9-28-37. Scott Godfrey took on two Northeastern players in a fight and the three were suspended for the first round of the bean pot.RPI: A line change by coach Leon Abbott enabled the Engineers to salvage a 4-4 tie with Army at Troy. Tom Gooding, a soph who had been at center between Jim Pollock and Tom Meisner, moved to wing with Pollock taking over the pivot. Gooding scored the last three goals of the game as RPI came from a 4-1 deficit. Army goalie Dan Scioletti had 47 stops, many of them sparkling. RPI, 6-0-2 in the league, was next faced with the difficult North Country swing to Clarkson and St. Lawrence.HARVARD: Joe Cavanagh tallied five assists and Dan, DeMichele netted four goals in the Crimson&rsquo;s 8-0 blasting of Princeton. Bruce Durno and Joe Bertagna combined for their fifth shutout of the season. The win boosted the Crimson&rsquo;s record to 9-3-1, and Cooney Weiland warns that his boys will be tougher down the stretch. Seven home games remain on the slate along with three road contests. &ldquo;We had a lot of physical problems before the break,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It was good for us not to play for a while. With any luck at all we&rsquo;d still be unbeaten.&rdquo; Harvard has lost overtime road games to Cornell and Clarkson, and was shocked at home by Div. They&rsquo;ve boosted their Division One record to 8-5 as a result, with the latest games a 3-0 blanking of Army at West Point, a 6-4 triumph over Boston College, and a 4-2 home loss to Clarkson. Rearguard Glen Collard netted the winner unassisted against BC as five other players scored in a good showing of offensive balance. Rich Pumple led the scoreres with 14-1630 for 18 games, while ten others had double figures. Coach Lou Lamoriello cites this balance and a decent break with the injury jinx as key factors in his team&rsquo;s improvement.PRINCETON: Goalie Ed Swift has been a busy man these days. He had 48 saves in that 3-2 overtime loss to Cornell where the Tigers, now 1-14 overall, almost, pulled the upset of the century. Down 2-0 going into the third period, the scrappers from New Jersey never quit. In a 4-2 loss to Brown, the sophomore goalie stopped 52 enemy drives. &#9632;

(Hockey News Photo by George Rizer)</figcaption></div>Murray Keogan returned for the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and the Bulldogs may be a real threat in the WCHA playoffs with their sophomore All American back.While not back at full strength yet, Keogan &mdash; out two months with a shoulder dislocation &mdash; scored a first-period goal and assisted on two of league scoring leader Walt Ledingham&rsquo;s three tallies, only to have UMD fall 5-4 to Michigan State.Curiousty enough. while the game was in Duluth, UMD had to thank goalie Glenn Resch for keeping it as close as it was. Resch made 42 saves in the game, 22 of them in the first period when it was a 1-1 game. Gilles Gagnon, who the first goal of the game, also got the last one. breaking a 4-4 tie. Randy Sokoll, who assisted on both of Gagnon&rsquo;s tallies, scored one himself.The next night, however. Duluth came back for an 8-4 victory, with freshman Pat Boutette scoring twice to pace the victory. The WCHA&rsquo;s knack for splitting two-game sets continues, as Duluth stood 9-9 and Michigan State 7-7 after the games.Wisconsin also stayed at the .500 mark, at 7-7, by splitting at Minnesota with a 6-3 victory after a 6-5 loss in overtime. Minnesota scored six straight goals to erase a 5-0 Wisconsin lead in the final period of the first game, with Craig Samer getting the tying and winning goals.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-02238/3050843-1-eng-US/f0020-022.jpg" title="f0020-02" width="243" height="439"><figcaption class="caption-body">Murray Keogan</figcaption></div>Colorado College, trying to get into the scramble for second place, got three goals from Bill Baidrica and shocked North Dakota 6-3. The Tigers came out and got a 2-0 lead in the second game after one period, then the Sioux retaliated for a 7-2 decision and a split. Dave Bragnalo got two goals for North Dakota, including the tying goal on a breakaway.The split left Colorado 5-8, while North Dakota became 9-9.Denver played a vigorous week&rsquo;s nonconference schedule, and it allowed the Pioneers to remain alone in second place with an 8-6 mark.After sweeping Iwo games with Colorado College on a Friday-Saturday. Denver beat St. Louis University 9-2 and 5-4 in overtime (St. Louis led 3-0) on the following Monday-Tuesday. On the following Friday, Denver went to South Bend, Ind., and toppled Notre Dame 4-3, then lost 5-4 in overtime to the Fighting Irish Saturday. As if not tired enough, Denver stopped off in Minneapolis and absorbed a 12-2 blitzing at the hands of the U.S. Nationals on that Sunday &mdash; the Pioneers&rsquo; fifth game in seven days and seventh game in 10 days.As usual, the exception to the rule of splitting was Michigan Tech. The overpowering Huskies, who had beaten the Nationals the week before, got two goals from Ken Tucker but needed four straight third-period counters to beat Michigan 5-2. The Wolverines, hoping to escape from the cellar and join the rest of the W&rsquo;CHA pack, were further discouraged when Tech clobbered them 7-2 the next afternoon. About the only thing Michigan (4-11) salvaged was stopping Tech&rsquo;s Gary Crosby in the first game. Crosby had scored in seven straight games.At 14-1, Tech is long gone at the head of the pack. And at 20-2-1, Tech has won 15 straight games and appears to be the best college team in the nation. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JOHN GILBERT</div>MINNEAPOLIS&mdash;University of Wisconsin coach Bob Johnson has the reputation for talking a lot. He used to chatter away while coaching Minneapolis Roosevelt High School, and it continued while he coached at Colorado College.Now he&rsquo;s at Wisconsin, where in the space of one year he got the Badgers into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and into the NCAA playoffs, plus securing Madison, Wis., as one of two sites for this year&rsquo;s WCHA playoffs.As he stood in the corridor at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, awaiting the second game of the Wisconsin-Minnesota series, his wife leaned over from the seats, pointed at her husband, and said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the first time I&rsquo;ve ever seen him speechless.&ldquo;I was wishing he would yell at me or something, just so I&rsquo;d know everything was back to normal.&rdquo;Mrs. Johnson&rsquo;s husband and the whole Wisconsin team was in a state of shock after one of the most amazing games in WCHA history. The Badgers, fighting with Denver and six other teams for second place behind Michigan Tech in the WCHA, needed a sweep against Minnesota. They want to finish ahead of Denver &mdash; the other WCHA playoff site &mdash; because the league champion, Tech, must go to the site of the team finishing lower between Denver and Wisconsin.And Wisconsin started off on the right track toward getting a sweep. Jim Young, Jim Boyd and Norm Cherrey had scored to put Wisconsin ahead 3-0 after two periods. Minnesota needed a quick goal in the third period to stay in the game, it appeared, but instead, the Badgers got one at 0:57. Then they got another one, and led 5-0.With 13 minutes to go, Minnesota hadn&rsquo;t done anything right. Then Doug Peltier got a break a way and scored at 7:24, and Jim Ebbitt knocked one in at 8:42, suddenly closing the game to 5-2. With loud support from the crowd, which was on its feet, the Gophers caught fire.Defenseman Frank Sanders broke in and scored at 11:17, than Mike Antonovich broke away cleanly and tallied at 13:08, cutting it to 5-4. Sanders gave Craig Sarner a sharp pass, Sarner slipped a defenseman and scored at 14:00, and it was 5-5.In the sudden-death overtime. Sarner did it again, slipping through another defenseman and scoring on a breakaway at 6:33. The Gophers had dazzled their fans and left Johnson speechless.The next day, he said, &ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t believe we had gotten a 5-0 lead in here to begin with. For two and a half periods, we looked like a real good hockey team, then Minnesota went wild. It&rsquo;s hard to believe, because if you gave a team five penalty shots, they wouldn&rsquo;t score on all of them.&rdquo;Three hours later, Johnson was chattering congratulations to each Wisconsin player as the team headed downstairs. The Badgers had won 6-3 for a split, but for awhile it looked like Mrs. Johnson would have to do all the talking again. &#9632;

Johnson Speechless As Wisconsin Blows Chance For ‘Double’

<div class="byline">BY HANS TANNER</div>ROCHESTER&mdash;The Rochester Americans have their 11th coach and sixth general manager of their 15-season American Hockey League membership.Dick Gamble, veteran AHL star left winger with Buffalo and Rochester, was relieved of his duties as both coach and general manager Monday. Feb. 8.His Amerks had just completed a three-game lost weekend&mdash;dropping home ice decisions to Providence and Springfield and the process. Providence. Springfield and Rochester have the worst road records in the league.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0021-0476/3050957-1-eng-US/f0021-042.jpg" title="f0021-04" width="260" height="441"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dick Gamble</figcaption></div>John (Peanuts) O&rsquo;Flaherty, chief scout of the parent Vancouver Canucks, was named coach for the balance of this season, with another coach expected for 1971-72.Doug Adam, a Vancouver scout based in Philadelphia, moves in as general manager in what Vancouver G.M. Bud Poile hopes will be a permanent position for him.Gamble departed after two and two-thirds seasons fraught with frustration. He began his coaching career here in 1968-69 just after Vancouver bought the Amerks and took Joe Crozier and most of the good players to the West Coast.The Amerks finished in the cellar with a 25-38-11 Western Division record. The quality of the talent dwindled even more last season and again Rochester was last in the Western Division&mdash;this time with an 18-38-16 record.While the personnel improved greatly on paper for this season, there wasn&rsquo;t that much improvement on the ice. When Gamble left the club had an 18-24-7 record and was tied with Hershey for third in the four-team Western Division. His overall AHL coaching record here was 61-100-34.Rochester had won just five and tied four while losing 15 of its last 24 games at the time of the switch.O&rsquo;Flaherty, who will stay on as chief scout in addition to being the Amerk coach, has an extensive background of coaching junior and senior teams across Canada. but never handled a pro club until stepping behind the bench in Providence Wednesday. Feb. 1(1. for his debut with the Americans.Gamble is the third Amerk coach to be fired during a season. Bucko McDonald was replaced on an interim basis by Sam Pollock on Nov. 14. 1958. and Steve Kraftcheck was replaced by general manager Jack Riley on Jan.5.1961.Despite the dismal records of his teams. Gamble Out In Amerks’ Shakeup As O’Flaherty, Adam Take Over

<div class="byline">BY JOHN TRAVERS</div>HERSHEY &mdash;Veteran Michel Harvey continues his blistering scoring pace since joining the line of center Gil Gilbert and Ted Snell.The 34-year-old Harvey, skating his seventh season for the Hershey Bears, was the first player on the club to crack the 20-goal level.In his last seven starts, dating back to Jan. 20. Harvey drilled in seven goals and assisted on two others to raise his point total to 41 and move him into 12th spot in the American League&rsquo;s scoring race.However, despite general manager-coach Frank Mathers reorganizing the forward lines, the Bears suddenly returned to their losing ways after going through four games without a setback.Prior to leaving for a six-game road swing, Hershey had outscored the opposition. 23-9. to beat Springfield twice and Rochester once before playing to a 2-2 standoff against Montreal.In the club&rsquo;s first two road starts, it dropped back-to-back 42 decisions to Rochester and the Western Division leading Baltimore Clippers.The only bright light is that Hershey has played two less games than Rochester, which showed a 43-41 point edge over the Bears in its hold on third place in the West.The only other two Hershey skaters among the loop&rsquo;s top point producers are centers Bob Leiter and Mike Nykoluk. another brace of veterans.Nykoluk has 39 points on nine goals and 30 assists after 45 games, while Leiter showed 37 points on 16 goals and 21 assists.George Swarbrick, recently acquired on loan from the Philadelphia Fivers, made his first appearance in the Bears lineup Feb. 5 at Baltimore. The former Clippers&rsquo; winger picked up an assist in helping to set-up Ross Webley for a third period goal. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY CHUCK SANTANIELLO</div><h4>Volmar, Smith, McDonough Rookie Candidates</h4>SPRINGFIELD&mdash;The Springfield Kings have two tremendous players this season who should qualify for &ldquo;rookie of the year&rdquo; honors. In fact, those people who take part in the voting are going to have to take a close, serious look at them for the award.In 30 games playing goal this season, 19-year old Bill Smith has been sensational. He has played 1,722 minutes in those games, allowed 102 goals, did not score a shutout which is surprising and has made 874 saves. He has a respectable 3.55 average. The club has 12 wins 14 losses and 4 ties with the kid in goal.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0022-01202/3051106-1-eng-US/f0022-012.jpg" title="f0022-01" width="270" height="432"><figcaption class="caption-body">Doug Volmar</figcaption></div>Last winter. Smith played with the Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Junior League. He was rated among the three best amateur goalies in all of Canada. Los Angeles scout George McGuire is very high on the native of Perth. Ontario.It is rare indeed when any young goalie comes into the American Hockey League and becomes a first string netminder. That is exactly what Smith has done, perhaps more of necessity since Bruce Landon has been hurt a good portion of the season with the Kings.Another serious rookie award contender should be the hard shooting Volmar. who is 6-2, 25 and weighs 215. A member of the Fort Worth Wings of the Central League last season, Doug is still eligible for rookie honors in the AHL. Doug is unique in the pro game being a native American who was born and still lives in Cleveland. Ohio.Volmar is one player someone apparently made a mistake on this season. He was loaned out to Springfield by the Detroit Red Wings, and the way they have been going, it is a mystery here why they did not call him up permanently. They took him for a short look them returned him. But Doug is one player who belongs in the NHL right now. He can shoot, skate, check and never stops hustling.Volmar has 24 goals in 43 games with the Kings at this writing with another 20 assists for a total of 43 points. There is no way they are going to keep Volmar out of the NHL next season. The former Michigan State skater shoots as hard as any established NHL player and better than most.Young Al McDonough is another fine young player who could get some action in the rookie award for the AHL. The 20-year-old played with St. Catharines juniors last winter where he scored 103 points and popped in 47 goals.Al got his chance to play for Los Angeles and did well, but has since been returned to the local team. Kinos’ Trio Threat For Award

PROVIDENCE&mdash;The Boston Bruins have given the American Hockey League playoff hopes of R.I. Reds a tremendous boost.Milt Schmidt, general manager of the Bruins, announced that rough and tough defenseman Bill Speer has been loaned to the Reds for the rest of the AHL season.Speer, 28 and 203 pounds, had been with the Hershey Bears for 27 games. The burly defender who has played with the Bruins in the NHL said &ldquo;I am extremely happy to be assigned to the Reds. My wife and three sons have been living at our home in Lynnfield, Mass., and I&rsquo;ve been in Hershey most of the time. With the boys in school in Lynnfield, being is Providence is a geographical plus for all of us.&rdquo; Lynnfield is about 40 miles from Providence and less than an hour&rsquo;s ride via turnpike travel.The acquisition of Speer by the Reds came after talks between Schmidt and Dave Creighton, general manager of the Reds. Larry Wilson, coach of the Reds who long ago showed an interest in Speer, was overjoyed at the news.&ldquo;Bill is a hard hitting defenseman, the kind we have needed to slow down opposing forwards,&rdquo; Wilson said. &ldquo;He is going to help us because Bill has a good shot and can play the point which is another part of our game which has needed some help.&rdquo;The small Providence rink may be just what the doctor ordered for Speer and the Reds. &#9632;

Last year the figure was 9&lsquo;2.000 &mdash; so that&rsquo;s an increase of nearly 40.000 fans. Searching the local records reveals the winter of 1967-68 as Baltimore&rsquo;s best when close to 192,000 saw 36 home games. But. at the Game No. 22 mark that figure was about 114,000 or. 16,000 less than this year&rsquo;s rate.However, there are other considerations which help swell the turnstile counts, and not the least of these are the group sales run by Woody Ryan. As of this date, the former local high school all-star goalie and. for a brief time, netminder with the old Eastern League Clippers, has been busier than a one-armed paper hanger with the hives.Ryan&rsquo;s group sales recently passed the 180 mark &ldquo;an all time high&rdquo;, the prematurely white-thatched Irishman smiled, &ldquo;and it keeps going out of sight.&rdquo;Some of the major upcoming promotions show the following:Friday. They have eight on each of second place San Diego (12 points away), third place Phoenix (nine points up) and fourth place Denver (eight points ahead).&ldquo;To do it,&rdquo; added Costello, &ldquo;we needed a shakeup and some center strength.&rdquo;The shakeup started with the sale of the club&rsquo;s leading scorer Bob Schmautz to the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League and the acquisition of center Jim Wiste and rightwinger Ed (Sock) Hatoum.Wiste and Hatoum are on loan for the season with the option to buy but with &ldquo;other considerations to be worked out,&rdquo; said the Seattle executive.Costello&rsquo;s hunt for another goalkeeper ended, too, when Ray Martynuik arrived from Montreal on loan for the season. Martynuik started the year with Montreal&rsquo;s AHL Voyageurs and went on assignment to Kansas City of the CHL recently. He was recalled and sent to the Totems. Veteran Don Head hasn&rsquo;t fully recovered from off-season knee surgery, throwing the burden on rookie George Surmay.Center Bill Knibbs was re-assigned by the New York Rangers to Omaha of the Central Hockey League.Veteran Art Stratton has only produced nine goals and 15 assists while Bob Jones, although tied for the team points lead with Schmautz, only had 12 goals and 25 assists. Schmautz had 16 goals, 21 assists.&ldquo;We&rsquo;re not getting the goals we should be getting,&rdquo; said Costello. &ldquo;We needed a playmaking centerman and Wiste is that.&ldquo;Hatoum can real&rsquo;, shoot the puck and that was Schmautz&rsquo;s asset, so if he can fill Schmautz&rsquo;s spot at right wing, then Wiste&rsquo;s addition is an advantage.&rdquo;Wiste, 25, 5-10 and 185, was co-captain of the University of Denver Pioneers, and was drafted from Chicago by Vancouver last summer. He was used sparingly both by Vancouver this season and Chicago last season. His last full campaign, he scored 32 goals and 44 assists in 68 games for Dallas in the Central League.Hatoum, born in Beirut, Lebanon, was taken in the draft from Detroit. Wiste, Hatoum, Martynuik Join Seattle In Shakeup

DENVER&mdash;Denver Spurs&rsquo; General Manager. Rudy Pilous announced that defenseman Bob McCord had been named team captain. McCord replaces Dave Amadio, who was loaned to Kansas City of the Central Hockey League two weeks ago.Pilous also announced that rightwinger and former coach Bill Dineen had been placed on waivers.The Spurs record since January 1 is 7 wins, three losses and one tie. The wins have included three shutouts, 9-0 over Salt Lake and 3-0 and 6-0 over Seattle. The Spurs have out-scored the opposition 56-27 during this span.The Spurs, plagued with financial difficulties, almost didn&rsquo;t play a recent WHL game. Denver&rsquo;s citizens rallied to the Spurs support and raised $52,000 in 24 hours to enable the Spurs to continue operations. They also turned out in record numbers for the Spurs game against the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. The first sell out in Denver hockey history was treated to a 8-1 victory. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY BOB LINDLEY</div>OMAHA&mdash;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0026-0393/3051420-1-eng-US/f0026-032.jpg" title="f0026-03" width="264" height="426"><figcaption class="caption-body">Sheldon Kannagiesser</figcaption></div>Remember the old cry in baseball a couple of decades ago of &ldquo;break up the Yankees?Well, that cry could be heard around the Central League concerning the powerful Omaha Knights, who were making a mockery of the CHL title chase.Then the parent New York Rangers began breaking them up through trades that have now put the Knights into the &ldquo;human&rdquo; category right down there with the rest of the league.Three stellar performers, including the team scoring leader, were lifted off the Knight roster in recent trades, and although the moves may not hamper Omaha&rsquo;s hopes for a first place finish through the regular season, they certainly have given rise to the hopes of another playoffbound clubs where the fight for the coveted Adams Cup is concerned.In the course of 10 days, the Knights lost centers Syl Apps Jr. (to Pittsburgh! and Torn Miller (Detroit) and defenseman Sheldon Kannegiesser (Pittsburgh).Miller was leading the Knight in scoring with 19 goals and 33 assists when he was taken. But more importantly, his loss made a big hole in one of the most potent scoring lines in the league.Miller had been the sparkplug between wingers Mike Murphy and Mike Parizeau and among them the trio accounted for 59 goals and 93 assists for 152 points. Murphy had 18 and 33. Parizeau had 22 and 27.The loss of Apps didn&rsquo;t hurt as much as the loss of Kannegiesser. who was playing by far the best hockey of his career for coach Fred Shero.Nor was Sheldon happy with the trade that lifted him oft the first place club nd deposited him with Amarillo, the CHL cellar dwellers.Kannegiesser at first refused to report, hut certain concessions were made to the big fellow and he will finish the season at Amarillo.What does it mean to the Knights to lose so much talent?Well, following the trades, the Knights dropped three of their next five games, and that&rsquo;s about one-fourth of the number of games they lost through the first 45 of the season.&ldquo;Shero is really going to have to wave his magic wand now.&rdquo; Knight general manager Jake Milford said. &ldquo;But I think we&rsquo;ve got the talent to go all the way again.&rdquo;DALLAS Rookie Dan Lodboa first CHL skater to reach 30-goal plateau, notching No. 30-goal in club&rsquo;s 50th game. Goalie Ken Brown winning his way back into regular starting rotation. Bill Young second in scoring with 13 goals 26 assists, followed closely by Don Gordon (21 and 17), Terry Caffery (9 and 29). Larry Romanchych (22-25) and Ron Dussiaume (18 and 18). Darrell Maggs, a blueliner, had 11 goals and defenseman Dennis Kearns led club in assists with 31.AMARILLO: Wranglers acquired Kannegiesser from Omaha following trade between parent Penguins and New York Rangers. Veteran blueliner Jean Paul Lagace also joined squad. Rick Kessell in scoring slump but still leads club with 22 goals. 25 assists through 47 games. Steve Cardwell climbed into CHL&rsquo;s top 20 scoring list with 14 and 22. followed by Robin Burns with 13 and 21.TULSA: Oilers, despite fifthplace standing, lead CHL in number of 20-plus goal scorers with five &mdash; Rene Robert (23). Cal Swenson 22). Rookie Jan Popiel (21). Denis Dupere (20). Dupere called up to Toronto on emergency basis. Brad Selwood sent to Tulsa by Maple Leafs to plug gaps in injury-riddled defense. Edwards backstopped four-game win streak, longest of the season for the club, and Proceviat scored five goals in the streak to run his total to 10 for the season. Defenseman Bob Wall, who played only four games, sufferesd a broken jaw and was due to miss at least 10 days, longer if the club couldn&rsquo;t devise some sort of protective gear. Gary Marsh, another newcomer, rejoined club after missing six games with a shoulder injury.OKLAHOMA CITY: Blazers broke out of prolonged slump with back-to-back victories over Tulsa and Amarillo and jump back into thick of playoff chase. Bill Klatt (26 goals. 31 assists) still club offensive sparkplug. Gregg Sheppard (38 assists) and Dick Cherry (38 assists) tied for CHL lead in that department. Rick MacLeish. rookie who scored 13 goals, lost in trade but Blazers acquire Keith Wright, who was member of original Oke City club in 1965-66. Jim Jones, second year defenseman. reinstated as amateur.FORT WORTH: Billy Dea. 37-year-old veteran left winger, scored seven goals in first five games with Wings. Al Karlander notched 20th in only 27 appearances. Tom Martin led club with 56 points (22 goals). Gerry Gray called to Detroit to replace injured goalie Roy Edwards. Fort Worth filled in with Ron Marlow from Port Huron. Coach Bob Lemieux, trying to bolster understaffed defense, switched rookie left winger Tom Gilmore to blueline and was so impressed with Denver U. grad&rsquo;s debut there that move might be permanent. &#9632;

Trades Defuse Omaha Power

They had just routed Greensboro two straight to run their streak to 18 to eclipse the old EHL standard set by the Gens. They had widened their lead over Greensboro to a hefty margin in the South.Fred Creighton&rsquo;s crew had its sights set on the AHL record of 27 straight triumphs set by Cleveland. They also had in the back of their mind the possibility of topping Clinton&rsquo;s record 124 points of several years ago.But all these thoughts went down the drain in rapid fashion as the winning streak ended on the first game up north with a tie at Syracuse. Then they lost to New Haven to end a non-losing streak that began a month previous. A tie at Jersey and a loss to Johnstown followed. Only wins over Long Island and Clinton kept the trip from being a complete fiasco.Creighton was most upset by the loss at New Haven since that is the team the Checkers most likely will meet should both reach the Walker Cup finals. In their previous clash, early in the season here, the teams tied.Despite the failures, the Checkers were deemed definite regular season champions in the south. Goalies John Voss and Gordon MacRae give the club great goaltending, and even if the offense isn&rsquo;t up to snuff, the defense is winning many games for the Checkers.Creighton said the club had five games in six days before going north. One day of traveling was followed by six straight games and this log could have entered into the dip. There also was considerable pressure on the team as it neared the record. But Creighton wasn&rsquo;t as downheartened as he might have been since the Checkers have the horses to whip foes at home and on the road. He claims if the Checkers reach the playoff finals, the northern clubs will find the Checkers a much better team.Voss set a team record for shutouts with his seventh against Greensboro. The club won 10 of the games in their streak on the road. John Rodger had two straight hat tricks at home.The Checkers held a commanding lead over Greensboro in the South and New Haven was fairly well entrenched in first place in the North. The surprise team was the Johnstown Jets, who have gradually risen from fifth place to second dislodging Syracuse Blazers.SALEM: The Rebels only win in a 5-game northern trip came against Jersey. Colin Kilburn upset by lack of police protection at Clinton. Jim Jago and Claude Piche on special weight programs. Goalie Jim Letcher playing well despite groin injury. Bob Lacey&rsquo;s season-ending injury diagnosed as severe ligament pulls. Kilburn sought help from Philly Flyers before deadline for playoff rosters.NEW HAVEN: Blades ended Charlotte&rsquo;s 19-game non-losing streak to gain confidence for potential EHL playoff final. Dennis Romanesky gave John Van Horlick a black eye. Neil Clark had two unassisted goals at Clinton. Clark&rsquo;s goal with 36 seconds left tied Syracuse and Dwight Winters&rsquo; tally with five seconds remaining deadlocked Salem. Fans at George Guilbault night contributed $2,318 to raise the fund to $15.000.JOHNSTOWN: Bob Vroman posted first Jet shutout of season at Long Island. Dick Roberge&rsquo;s goal with 22 seconds left tied Jersey in disputed game. Len Cunning, a Pittsburgh farmhand, played several games with Amarillo. Winger Dave Birch secured from&lsquo;Long Island on waivers. Gene Peacosh and Reg Kent are experts in winning faceoffs. He was getting so good he couldn&rsquo;t afford to take a chance on sitting out even one game.Scoring goals, helping on others, moving the puck &mdash; the coach was the moving spirit in a spectacular upward surge of the Komets. He went to the top of the team in point scoring after it was found necessary to release veteran Rich Brown, who had gone into a tailspin after leading the club through the early stages of the season.Boileau was leading the team in assists from his center spot and in winning goals.Another sparkplug in the Komets&rsquo; winning streak was Mike Jacubo, who has been employed mainly at center, sometimes on the wing.Several weeks ago, the young forward was sitting out some games, with no apparent reason except that the K&rsquo;s, like every other team in the league, were several players over the limit. The fans, with whom hustling Mike was extremely popular, were expressing some concern that Jacubo might be considered expendable.If such was ever the plan, it never materialized. When Jacubo got back in the starting lineup, he did a terrific job, moving up to second place in team scoring.Coach Boileau said of Jacubo, &ldquo;Jake is skating and giving out with a great effort now. <div class="byline">BY ALEX HARDY</div>EDMONTON&mdash;This is the year of the rookie in the Western Canada League.Many of last season&rsquo;s established stars have graduated to the pros, including Reg Leach, Ray Martynuik and Murray Anderson of Flin Flon, Jim Hargreaves and Chris Oddleifson of Winnipeg, Jim Schraefel and Ted McAneeley of Edmonton, Greg Polis of Estevan and Randy Rota of Calgary.As a result some teams have more than 50 percent rookies in their lineups. Winnipeg Jets have 11 new faces, Edmonton Oil Kings nine.Some of the rookies have done unexpectedly well. The best new talent is in goal, where Henry Durkin of Swift Current, Steve McFarland of Medicine Hat and Frank Turnbull of Winnipeg have sizzled.Durkin, only 17, obviously benefitted from training he received in Trail, B.C. from former Canadian Nationals goalie Seth Martin.Turnbull, who is also 17 and weighs only 140 pounds, hasn&rsquo;t played as many games as Durkin because Winnipeg has another capable netminder in Mike Schneider. But when he has played he has shone, sometimes stopping over 50 shots in a game. McFarland, meanwhile, is one of Medicine Hat&rsquo;s top finds.On defense, top rookies have been Tom Bladon of Edmonton and Dwayne Pentland of Brandon.Edmonton coach Harvey Roy says it is a toss-up between Bladon and forward John Rogers as to who is Oil Kings&rsquo; best rookie. Both are graduates of the Edmonton Maple Leafs of the Alberta Junior League, Oil Kings&rsquo; No. 1 farm club.Other notable first-year players include Bob Nystrom of Calgary, Bob Miller of Estevan, and Stan Weir of Medicine hat.The WCHL also has an outstanding rookie referee, Andy Hellemond of Winnipeg. He is in his early 20&rsquo;s but has drawn praise from Edmonton Journal sportswriter Bob Briscoe for &ldquo;already having the rare quality of being able to keep things under control while letting the teams play the game.&rdquo;Estevan is the most experienced team. Last year the Bruins were loaded with rookies and paid for their inexperience. This season they have only three new faces.ICE CHIPS:&mdash;Home ice is worth at least a couple of goals in the WCHL, a fact that was hammered home to the Edmonton Oil Kings. Riding atop the Western Division. Oil Kings promptly were bombed in four of five road games and slipped back into a battle for top spot with Calgary &hellip; Winnipeg Jets gave 18-year-old defenseman Mike Ford a five-game tryout in order to make him eligible for the WCHL playoffs &hellip; new Swift Current coach Stan Dunn has impressive credentials. Last year he coached Weyburn Red Wings to the Memorial Cup final. &#9632;

Rookie Turnover Big After Pros Crabbed Top Stars In WCHL

CALGARY &mdash;Netminder Ed Dyck of Calgary Centennials, who was the No. 3 amateur draft choice of the NHL Vancouver Canucks last summer, is maintaining his high standing among the Western Canada Hockey League goalkeepers.In addition to being selected the WCHL&rsquo;s All Star goaler, Dyck tops the puck stoppers with a 2.31 goals-against average.Grant Green of Estevan is second with 2.67 average and leads in shutouts with five.Orest Kindrachuk of Saskatoon Blades vaulted past the century plateau last week in his bid for the 1970-71 WCHL scoring championship.The starry Blades&rsquo; captain raised his seasonal output to 102 points. <div class="byline">BY ERNIE FEDORUK</div>VICTORIA&mdash;Victoria Cougars are back playing hockey, and with a new coach Mike Shabaga &mdash; at the helm, but it may be quite a while before the British Columbia Junior Hockey League forgets &ldquo;The Great Rebellion&rdquo;.The bitter dispute, which threatened the playing futures of 16 young men, had its beginning when Victoria General Manager Eric Bishop relieved Ron Maxwell of his coaching duties.But it continued to smoulder for days after an apparent settlement had been reached.After Maxwell&rsquo;s &ldquo;elevation&rdquo; to a front-office post, the 16 players unanimously declared they would refuse to play. Their strike threat forced BCJHL President Dr. Arnold Lowden to postpone a Feb. 3 game in New Westminster.But the players stuck to their guns and a second game, Feb. 6 against Vernon, became the object of the strike threat. Even the threat of a two-year suspension imposed by Dr. Lowden failed, on the surface at least, to sway the players from their adamant stand.The Cougars finally agreed to play only after Club President Bud Milner, head of a seven-man Calgary syndicate which owns the team, agreed to &ldquo;certain conditions.&rdquo;For most of a week, it seemed the players were waging a &ldquo;pro-Maxwell&rdquo; battle. At the end, however, it became obvious the situation also included an &ldquo;anti-Bishop&rdquo; stand.Neither players nor management would comment on the matter, but it was learned that one of the key conditions of settlement is an understanding that Bishop not interfere with the coaching of the club.Dr. Lowden happily withdrew his threat of suspension and the players took the ice for their home encounter with Vernon. The Cougars expressed their happiness by belting Vernon 10-3.But it was obvious that ill-feelings remained.Three of Bishop&rsquo;s four young daughters and a son, 22-vear-old Rick, were the targets of vitriolic abuse from a number of fans. One of the young girls left Victoria&rsquo;s Memorial Arena in tears, and the Feb. 6 display generally disgusted the city&rsquo;s hockey writers.Even while the Cougar management was lining up their new coach, a few Victoria fans began to petition for Maxwell&rsquo;s reinstatement.The irony of the situation is that the league&rsquo;s most successful coach, from a standpoint of victories, was removed from his post. The Cougars had won 28 games, tied five and lost 10 to enjoy an eight-point lead over second-place Vancouver Centennials atop the Coastal Division standing.Bishop was cognizant of Maxwell&rsquo;s record but felt the team still had not improved to the degree displayed by other top. challengers since October.The Victoria coaching change is the third this season in the eight-team league. Earlier, New-Westminster fired the veteran Buster Brayshaw and replaced him with Ollie Dorohoy.Then Chilliwack Bruins, the circuit&rsquo;s newest entry, replaced Bob Foster with Orv Litchfield.Cougars&rsquo; new coach is 48-year-old Mike Shabaga. former coach of Swift Current Indians in the Western Canada league.But &ldquo;The Great Rebellion&rdquo; still remains a choice coffee-house topic in Victoria. And the taste lingers on. &#9632;

Ottawa, Montreal and St. Catharines scramble for the top four positions and the Toronto Marlboros lurk in the background in fifth spot ready to move up if any of the &ldquo;Big Four&rdquo; show signs of faltering.However there is also a pretty fair battle shaping up among the four teams immediately behind the Marlboros.Three of the four will make the playoffs, the other will be on the outside looking in when the postseason games start the first week of April.Until recently the chances of Oshawa and Niagara Falls were all but written off.Niagara Falls Flyers are still well down in the basement and will almost certainly miss the playoffs for the second successive year.It&rsquo;s a different story in Oshawa where the Generals have suddenly emerged as genuine playoff contenders.From late January through the first week of February the Generals put together their longest undefeated streak of the year &mdash; three wins and two ties and closed the gap between ninth place and eighth to five points and are only nine back of sixth place Hamilton Red Wings.With 20 games left there is still plenty of time for the Generals to catch one of the eight playoff positions.At the other end of the league Peterborough, in first place since the opening game Oct 1 held a slim lead over Ottawa but the 67s, with two games in hand could easily take over if the Petes slip even slightly.Both clubs are remarkably similar in style with John Garrett of the Petes and Michel (Bunny) Larocque of the 67s playing brilliantly in the nets, an adequate defense and well-balanced forward lines which stick to basic positional hockey.Montreal Canadiens and St. Catharines Black Hawks, third and fourth respectively, also play the same type of hockey but in their cases it&rsquo;s more of a wide-open variety which places the emphasis on defense and more stress on the goaltending.The Hawks, after the return of captain Marcel Dionne, who suffered a broken collarbone Dec. 11 in Toronto, defeated Hamilton Red Wings but then hit the skids with four successive defeats to Montreal. Ottawa, Peterborough and Toronto Marlboros.They appeared to regain their winning form by trouncing the Marlboros 9-4 after suffering a 10-8 home ice loss to the Dukes a week earlier. &#9632;

Oshawa Rises Up As Playoff Contender

TORONTO&mdash;Toronto Marlboros will have to get along without their rugged defenseman Steve Durbano until March 5.A month ago Durbano was suspended for two games after incurring three major penalties against Peterborough &mdash; one for fighting and two others for deliberate attempt to injure.The 19-year-old son of Hamilton Red Wing owner Nick Durbano was placed on a &ldquo;suspended sentence&rdquo; by Ontario Hockey Association president Clarence (Tubby) Schmalz at that time with the warning that any further troubles would result in at least an additional four games.Durbano was involved in a fight in London and the OHA sub-committee immediately invoked the extra four games plus six more for a total of 10 games.Durbano&rsquo;s record in three years with the Marlboros undoubtedly had a bearing on the severity of the sentence.In his first year he incurred 187 minutes in penalties, last year he set a record of 387 minutes and was approaching 300 minutes when handed the 10-game suspension. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div>LOS ANGELES&mdash;The Los Angeles Kings&rsquo; status as the most improved team in the National Hockey League for this season was confirmed when they achieved their 39th point in their 48th game and then their 15th victory in their 51st game, thus surpassing last season&rsquo;s final marks with 27 games, nearly one-third of the campaign, still to play.This is a noteworthy achievement for owner Jack Kent Cooke and manager-coach Larry Regan, who so thoroughly reorganized the roster. It does not mean the Kings yet are winners or are even going to make the playoffs. They may make the playoffs, but they have to pick up their pace, improve yet more, to do so.After 51 games, the Kings remained 10 games under the .500 level, the latter a reasonable level for a team to be considered respectable. And, of course, a team must go beyond that to become contenders. Hopefully, the signs are the club is headed in the right direction for the future.Those close to the team, from management through writers to the fans, have been forced by frustration to impatience. They want it all right away. This is a lot to ask. This is a better team than the last two. It ties some games the last team would lose. It wins some the last team would tie. The last team won two games on the road all season. This one has won five. It is more of a threat. Its spirit is high. If is not a powerhouse, but it is improved.Adding veteran experience for the stretch run, the Kings acquired Ralph Backstrom from Montreal for Gordon Labossiere and Ray Fortin and purchased Harry Howell from Oakland. Backstrom, a center, is 33 and in his 13th full NHL season, while Howell, a defenseman, 38 and in his 19th year up top. The club thus set aside its youth movement in the hopes of making the playoffs right now.Recently, the Kings went six straight games without a defeat. They won in Philadelphia, 4-1, then came home to beat Pittsburgh, 4-2, and Toronto, 3-2, on Juha Widing&rsquo;s goal with 47 seconds remaining, for three in a row. They then were tied by Buffalo, 3-3, took to the road and tied in Detroit, 3-3, on Doug Robinson&rsquo;s goal with 3:41 to go, and in New York. 2-2, on Widing&rsquo;s goal with 11:12 to play.The Kings sagged in Boston, losing, 7-3, and in Buffalo, losing, 5-2. Eddie Shack beat them with a hat-trick in Buffalo, revenge for the Kings&rsquo; trading him earlier. The Kings got nothing in return for Shack, except a tighter defense and greater spirit. It is a fact that they improved when they let him go and have been a tougher team since he departed. However, this was a sweet one for Eddie the Entertainer.As a result of the Kings&rsquo; improvement, interest is rising. The USC-UCLA basketball game was the most publicized in town in years, but on the night it and a Laker game at San Diego were televised locally, 13,312 turned out at the L.A. forum to see Montreal and the Kings responded with a 6-3 triumph.KINGS THINGS: The writer wants to thank all who wrote, called or broadcast kind thoughts on the occasion of his emergency appendectomy.
