NHL Return Remote, Brewer Turns To Business Career
TORONTO— For much of this season. Toronto Maple Leaf fans have expected the return of Carl Brewer, the defenseman who last season was an All-Star with the Detroit Red Wings. Brewer. it was commonly believed, wears the same Leaf-imprinted jockey shorts as his old defense team-mate. Bob Baun, and like him eventually would return to the team and ensure a playoff reunion. But it isn’t going to happen, according to Brewer’s conclusion. The 32-year old who retired from Leafs and professional hockey in 1965 met several times with Leaf management this season and had decided he was ready to return. But he remained Red Wing property when Toronto and Detroit management couldn’t agree to any trade. “Late in January I came to the conclusion that nothing was going to happen.” said Brewer. “Detroit wasn’t…

Clippers Look For Rivard’s Versatility
BALTIMORE— One of Coach Terry Reardon’s most oft-heard expressions emanating from the Baltimore Clippers bench during the course of a hotly contested game goes something like. “Come on Rivett…throw it in there…and go after it.” And, that’s just about what Joseph Robert Rivard has been doing on behalf of his Clipper teammates, ever since he came to the local club three wintersago from the Pittsburgh Penguins. “Terry is the only one know of who calls me ‘Rivet’, the popular, 31-year-old native of Quebec recently recalled.” but I don’t mind, just so long as he keeps hollering my name to make the regular line changes.” At 5 feet 8, 155 pounds, Rivard’s life in the pro hockey world hasn’t been easy. He gets his share of the bumps and ‘umps, but always manages to bounce…

Bob Leiter’s Ite Determination May Sway AHL AH Star Voters
HERSHEY— The last three seasons when All Star balloting time rolled around, Bobby Leiter never received a call from the voters. At the rate the 29-year-old Bears’ center has been wheeling of late, the press-radio-TV crowd throughout the American League had better start looking Leiter’s way. It’s a tribute to the guy’s fortitude that he’s even around to lace on a pair of boots. Less hardy athletes would have tossed in the sponge long ago. Twice during his pro career, the gutsy 5’9” Winnipeg product suffered serious ailments. A few years ago while playing for the Boston Bruins in a game in Montreal, he was smashed into the boards by Doug Roberts. Two bones in his left forearm were shattered. It required a pair of aluminum “rods” to correct the damage. A few seasons…
