Injuries, Mistakes Help Put Penguins On Skids In West

PITTSBURGH — Maybe Red Kelly will turn to an Irish green coat. It worked wonders in Philadelphia for Flyers’ Coach Vic Stasiuk. And look where the Flyers went in one week flying right by the Penguins. At the beginning of the week the Pens were two points ahead of the Flyers, seemingly lodged in fourth place and just warming up for the same kind of surge that took them to the playoffs last season. It was a four-point game, one both clubs needed, one the Flyers took, setting the stage for their almost perfect week. Tony Esposito and…

While resurgent Minnesota ripped second-place Minnesota Duluth twice, Tech hammered out two 6-2 victories over North Dakota following a mid-week 8-2 romp over Colorado College. That left Tech 8-1 atop the WCHA while Duluth fell to 7-5. It appears the WCHA is a break-even race except for Tech, although the Huskies then had to take to the road. Michigan Tech has some freshmen in key spots, most notably Mike Usitalo up front and Jim Nahrgang at defense. Those two, plus the young goalie tandem of Bob Lee and Morris Trewin have been keys for the Huskies success. But Tech is always potent at Dee Stadium, the tiny arena in Houghton.…
