In The East Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins is enjoying a fabulous season in the NHL. In fact every time he touches the puck these days he either breaks or is approaching another record. Espo turned in another productive week with four goals and four assists — including his fifth three-goal hat trick of the season for a new NHL record. Two more and he’ll tie the all-time mark of seven set by Joe Malone in a 44-game season in 1917-18. The rangy Boston center now has 42 goals and 87 points in 44 games and if he scores eight more goals in the Bruins’ next six games, he will break his own record for most goals in a season by a center (49) and equal Maurice Richard’s feat of 50 goals…

WESTERN WAY

Michigan Tech got an unlikely assist from defending champion Minnesota, and soared away to a commanding lead in the tough Western Collegiate Hockey Association. While resurgent Minnesota ripped second-place Minnesota Duluth twice, Tech hammered out two 6-2 victories over North Dakota following a mid-week 8-2 romp over Colorado College. That left Tech 8-1 atop the WCHA while Duluth fell to 7-5. It appears the WCHA is a break-even race except for Tech, although the Huskies then had to take to the road. Michigan Tech has some freshmen in key spots, most notably Mike Usitalo up front and Jim Nahrgang at defense. Those two, plus the young goalie tandem of Bob Lee and Morris Trewin have been keys for the Huskies success. But Tech is always potent at Dee Stadium, the tiny arena in Houghton.…
