Nesterenko Another Quiet Hero On Hawks

CHICAGO— Eric (The Great) Nesterenko is participating in his 20th season in the National Hockey League and his 20th at being fameless. Maybe that’s because he doesn’t talk too much until he’s approached. Or maybe it’s because his cubicle in the Black Hawks’ dressing room is peacefully tucked behind the large entry door. Or maybe it’s because the Flin Flon Flash (for home, which is Flin Flon, Manitoba) really isn’t very flashy after all. On the other hand, no detective is needed to discern how valuable Nesterenko is. “Frankly,” Coach Billy Reay asserts, “I can’t say enough good things about him. What Nesterenko does will not how up in the scoring column, but he’s just as important to this hockey club as a goal-scorer. “He’s a tremendous defensive player—you can pit him against anybody in…

Espo Setting Record Pace

MONTREAL— Boston Bruin center Phil Esposito is carrying on a tradition associated only with his team. The National Hockey League’s leading pointman is averaging exactly two points a game after 32 games. No player in NHL history has recorded that high an average this late in a season and the ones closest to that mark were all Bruin players. When Esposito set the current record of 126 points in 1968-69. he averaged 1.70 points a game. In 1943-44, Herbie Cain of Boston won the scoring championship with 82 points in 48 games an average of 1.70. Cooney Weiland of Boston was the titlist in 1929-30 with 73 points in 43 games, an average of 1.66 points per game. Esposito’s total now is 30 goals and 34 assists for 64 points. He leads teammate…

Kurtenbach Exceeds Expectations As Leader Of Surprising Canucks

VANCOUVER— They’re not exactly burning up the league, it’s true. Some of the nuts and bolts tend to fly off every time the team plays on the road. Nevertheless, for a team that was generally picked to finish last—even by so learned a journal as THE JOCKEY NEWS—this is turning out to be quite a year for the Vancouver Canucks. Here it is almost Christmas and lo and behold, the first-year Canucks are still clinging to fourth place in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Division. There have been suggestions that coach Hal Laycoe has been conducting some strange voodoo rites behind the dressing room door and kills a chicken before each game. Others claim the fix is in with the continent’s typesetters and that Vancouver’s position in the standings is the result of a series…
