Defeats By New Expansion Clubs Stirs Rumor Mitt Around Leafs
TORONTO— It will be a long time before Remembrance Day, 1970, is forgotten around Maple Leaf Gardens. That was the night the brand new Vancouver Canucks came in, 24 hours after having been worked over by the Boston Bruins, and whipped Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-2. The following day, rumors were flying around Toronto to the effect that coach Johnny McLellan would be ousted from office right away, while there was still time to salvage something from the 1970-71 campaign. And one reason these rumors were flying so plentifully was that the following Wednesday, Nov. 18, Punch Imlach would be bringing his Buffalo Sabres to town. The loss to Vancouver raised the chilling possibility that Imlach could score a victory over the team that had dumped him in 1969 and, more significantly, over its president,…

Balon, Villemure Hot As Rangers Aim High
NEW YORK— Dave Balon, the hard working left winger on the Walt Tkaczuk line was cold and irritated, but withal, very happy. “I had to wait about five minutes to go on television after the game and I didn’t even have a towel to keep me warm.” grinned Balon. “It was worth it, though. I’ll take it this way anytime.” Balon was talking about his being named the first star of the Rangers big win over Montreal 5-4. on November 21 at the Montreal Forum. It was the second straight game in which Davey had potted two goals. His pair against the Canadiens came in the third period and broke a 3-3 deadlock. To Balon, a former Canadien. skating out to center ice was heartwarming and justice triumphing. Davey. whose 33 goal season of a…
PASSING THE PUCK
• THE BOSTON BRUINS have another hot line on the rampage and if the trio continues its present pace, it could shatter the existing NHL line marks for both points and goals. Phil Esposito, Wayne Cashman and Ken Hodge form the Bruin unit and if they maintain their present scoring gait, they could finish the season with 125 goals and 337 points. The present standards are 263 points and 114 goals…Jim Johnson of Philadelphia joined a select club group of hat trick scorers with his recent three-goal game. It was his second with the club which put him in a class with Andre Lacroix and Leon Rochefort as the only three double; hat trick scorers in the team’s four-year existence…St. Louis Blues have added burly Bob Plager to their list…
