Hall Of Famer Newsy Lalonde Dies At Age 83

MONTREAL— Scoring nine goals in one game and being elected to two major hall of fames were just a few of the exploits credited to Edward Cyril (Newsy) Lalonde during his illustrious sports career. Newsy, a familiar figure at National Hockey League games here for decades, died at the age of 83 on Nov. 21. He died of complications caused by a hip injury that kept him away from NHL games this season. Lalonde enjoyed a fabulous hockey and lacrosse career from 1905 to 1926 in such cities as Montreal, Toronto, Regina, Sakatoon, Vancouver and New York. His feat of scoring nine times in an NHL game was one of the highlights of his career. Four times he led NHL scorers from 1910 to 1921. His prowess in both lacrosse and hockey became legend…

Fortin’s Play Helps To Get Kings Rolling

SPRINGFIELD— The Kings have started to jell after a real slow start. Hampered by injuries as well as inexperience, coach John Wilson’s club should now be right in the race for first place the rest of the season. It only took a little patience and a little confidence to get them rolling. Bruce Landon has been the main force in goal. The 21 year old, second year pro has been doing very well since he came back into the nets. He was out for some time with a dislocated shoulder. Last season, Bruce started fast and had a bad slump towards the end of the season. His back-up man, young Bill Smith, has also performed well. The 19 year old rookie fresh off the Cornwall Junior A club last season, moved right in…

Shack, Duff Become Newest Sabres In Trade

Buffalo BUFFALO— The Buffalo Sabres reached out for experienced hands and came up with Dick Duff, a 34-year-old, and Eddie Shack, the 33-year-old ‘Entertainer’ from the Los Angeles Kings. General-manager-coach Punch Imlach figures both players will help his club. In return the Sabres gave up a player to be named later and some future considerations—but nothing like a draft choice or a top amateur player. Imlach was adamant about that fact. “We’re simply trying to improve our hockey club and I feel these two guys can help,” Imlach said. “They haven’t been playing a great deal with Los Angeles, and both have been off to poor starts. Of course, that’s why we got them. You don’t get people who are going well as a rule.” Both played for Imlach during his 11-year tenure with the…
