Pens’ Defenseman Praises Club’s Netminding Team

PITTSBURGH— You won’t find Les Binkley or Al Smith in the NHLs top 10 netminders right now but that doesn’t mean to say they are not doing a job for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Defenseman Bryan Watson, a man who should know since he plays in front of them game in and game out, has come to the defence of the Pens’ goaling duo. “There are games those two guys stand the other teams on their ears,” said Watson during a recent interview with a Montreal hockey writer. Binkley sports a 2.75 personal goals-against average. Smith is 2.96. But collectively, they have a 2.86 mark—eighth best in the NHL. NHL Divisions Should Be Geographic Setup I think the newly divised East and West divisions of the NHL are really poor. They should be, divided up as they are seen geographically on any North American map. This way, the established teams would be split up a little better and would give the weaker teams a better chance to make the playoffs. The East should be made up of: Boston, New York, Buffalo, Montreal, Toronto, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. The West should be: St. Louis, Oakland, Chicago, Detroit, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Minnesota. I think this would leave one, and possibly two, playoff spots up for grabs in the East and three in the West. KATHLEEN HAYESCambridge, Mass. Hall Of Famer Newsy Lalonde Dies At Age 83

MONTREAL— Scoring nine goals in one game and being elected to two major hall of fames were just a few of the exploits credited to Edward Cyril (Newsy) Lalonde during his illustrious sports career. Newsy, a familiar figure at National Hockey League games here for decades, died at the age of 83 on Nov. 21. He died of complications caused by a hip injury that kept him away from NHL games this season. Lalonde enjoyed a fabulous hockey and lacrosse career from 1905 to 1926 in such cities as Montreal, Toronto, Regina, Sakatoon, Vancouver and New York. His feat of scoring nine times in an NHL game was one of the highlights of his career. Four times he led NHL scorers from 1910 to 1921. His prowess in both lacrosse and hockey became legend…
