Orr Upgraded Scoring Defensemen
MONTREAL— Every season, it seems, defensemen score more. It’s part of the changing pattern of the game. Bobby Orr went all the way with it last season as he scored 33 goals, assisted on 87 others and wound up with 120 points to become the first defenseman ever to lead the NHL in scoring. Carol Vadnais of Oakland had 24 goals and Arnie Brown of New York 15 to rank second and third among defensemen in goals scored. Doug Harvey, who was considered a splendid offensive defenseman in his best days with Montreal, never scored as many as 10 goals in a season in his career, though he did score as many as 50 points in one campaign. As a guide-line to go on as this season develops, here’s the top dozen point-producers…

Reds’ Offense Given Boost As Oakland Options Menard
PROVIDENCE— Howie Menard, a veteran center, has jorined the Rhode Island Reds from the Oakland Seals of the National Hockey League. He has played in the National League with Detroit, Los Angeles and the Seals and joins the Reds at a time when added strength at center ice is sorely needed. Drafted by Buffalo Sbres from the seals he was repurchased by Oakland and later shipped off to the Reds. Back in 1962-63, Menard began his pro career with Pittsburgh of the American Hockey League. In addition to that team and his NHL affilliations, Howie has worn the uniform of teams in Cincinnati, Memphis, and Springfield. Born in Timmins, Ont. April 28, 1942, Menard shoots right, stands 5-8 and weighs 160 pounds. RED NOTES: Brian Cadle, a 22-year-old center, has also joined the Reds. He…

McCartan Becomes Highest Paid Coaler
SAN DIEGO— Jack McCartan became the highest paid goaltender in the Western Hockey League, ending his holdout after the San Diego Gulls were one game into the Western Hockey League season. Now, all coach Max McNab has to do is pick two goaltenders from among Bob Champoux, Gary Simmons and McCartan. Champoux shut out the Denver Spurs almost singlehandly for the first 30 minutes as the Gulls took a 3-3 tie against the Spurs and the next day Simmons, a rookie, fought down a case of stage fright to help the Gulls stop the Spurs, 5-4. No terms were announced as McCartan, the WHL’s Al Star netminder, signed for his third season with the Gulls but it is known that he was offered the highest salary of any goalie in the league. “Offensively,” said…
