One Record Still Eludes Bobby Orr
MONTREAL— Would you believe there is a record Bobby Orr has not attained in the NHL? Orr surpassed his own mark for goals and Pat Stapleton’s record for points (50) by a defenseman in one season last year. He has a long way to go to surpass Red Kelly’s career record 823 points, although many of these were scored when Red was playing up front, not on defense. More immediately, Bobby can shoot for most goals by a defenseman in one game. Do you know how many this is, and who holds it? Record Orr Doesn’t Have The most goals ever scored by a defenseman in one game in the NHL is four, set by Sprague Cleghorn of Montreal in 1922 and equalled by Johnny McKinnon of Pittsburgh and Hap Day of Toronto in…
Cleveland Mod Squad Faces Test
CLEVELAND— For the Cleveland Barons, October 30 is an important date. That’s the day the Barons wind up an early-season seven-game road trip that traditionally takes its toll on Cleveland clubs. New Barons’ General Manager John Muckier remains unshaken, however, when reminded of how local clubs more often than not have collapsed on their annual early season trek. Muckier contends that the age-old muttering of “you can’t win consistently on the road” is pure rock salt. “A good club can win anywhere,” Muckier said with conviction. “If we can’t win away from home, we don’t deserve to win any titles.” There is little question that this year’s edition of the blue and white has its sights set on the top. The young club—dubbed the Mod Squad by one wag, quickly captured the fancy of…
Clarke New ‘Iron Man’
PHILADELPHIA— Bobby Clarke now stands alone as the consecutive game leader of the Flyers. The sophomore center has bypassed veteran defenseman Larry Hillman. The duo had been the only members of the club to play in all 76 games a year ago. It was the first season for each as Flyers. Hillman’s streak ended when he sat out the Flyers’ 2-1 loss to Montreal at the Spectrum the second game of the season. It was created by the seven defensemen carried by the team for the season opening. The Flyers’ 15-game consecutive streak of home sellouts also ended on the opening weekend. A crowd of 14,303—some 300 below the sellout figure—watched the opening victory over Minnesota.…
Canucks’ NHL Debut Box Office Smash Despite Losses
VANCOUVER— Big league hockey returned to Canada’s west coast after an absence of 44 years Oct. 9 and the people of Vancouver, who have long been clamoring for an NHL franchise, quickly put their money where their mouth had been. A total of 15,062 turned out to view the Canucks’ gala re-entry into the big time and despite a 3-1 loss to the vastly improved Los Angeles Kings, 15,542 showed up for the club’s second game two days later. This one was against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Canucks rewarded their fans with a 5-3 decision over last season’s East Division tail-enders. Los Angeles had a clear edge in play in the opener. Nevertheless, Vancouver could actually have started its first NHL campaign with two straight victories. The Canucks hit two goal posts in…
