Rookie Goaler Fights For No. 1 Job

HERSHEY— The Hershey Bears had a streak going after two games—a losing one. Coach Frank Mathers’ charges dropped a 5-4 opening season game at Springfield on a penalty shot, then fell 3-1 to Rochester the following night at home before the brilliant goaltending of rookie Serge Aubry. Actually, it was another one goal defeat since the Americans’ last tally came on an open net. Against the Kings, veteran goalie Andre Gill was in the nets, while rookie Dan Bouchard got the nod against Rochester. “We’ve got to play both goalies to see who will win the starting job,” said Mathers. Bobby Hull still is the hero in Chicago, but the prod to the pennant last season came from a rookie rearguard, Keith Magnuson. If Charley Finley is going to gain the attention of sports fans in Oakland, his best bet is a defenseman, Carol Vadnais. These are four of the finest defensemen in the game. Carl Brewer’s second retirement and Al Arbour’s first have thinned out the depth of established talent among defensemen in the major…

Watson Instills New Life In Syracuse; Kilburn Sets 300-Goal Year For Salem

SYRACUSE— If there’s one thing certain in the Eastern Hockey League this year, it’s that Phil Watson will field a representative team for the Syracuse Blazers. The new skipper, a veteran of National Hockey League coaching experience, has been hurt by the loss of some of the club’s outstanding operatives from last season. That team finished in fourth place to earn a playoff berth and showed promise of rising this year. But Watson won’t have many of the standouts from that club barring some last minute changes of heart. Stalwarts like Ray Adduono, the top pointmaker; Ed Skyhar and Lee Inglis are all lost, but Watson has utilized his many contacts to bring in some promising new personnel. “I’m not sure where we’ll finish this year,” says Watson, “but I know we’re going to…
