Gadsby, Johnson Named To Hall Of Fame

MONTREAL— Four more hockey figures were elected to the NHL Hall of Fame, the players received a new deal as the result of player-owner council meetings, a raft of rule changes were ratified and the NHL agreed to recognize the referees and linesmen association. These were some of the events that swelled the summer hockey calendar. Taking them in their order, the NHL moved to admit four new members—three former playing greats and one hockey executive—to its select Hall of Fame. Defensemen Bill Gadsby and Tom Johnson, and the late Cecil ‘Babe’ Dye, an old-time ice great, were selected by the Hall of Fame committee for inclusion in the hockey hall. Bob Lebel of. Martin Makes Pitch For Helmets In NHL During Award Speech

MONTREAL— When diminutive Pit Martin of the Chicago Black Hawks stepped up to receive the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy he jumped at the chance to get in a few licks for his favorite crusade—the compulsory wearing of helmets. The 26-year-old center of the Hawks, who has worn a helmet for the last five NHL seasons, thinks all National Leaguers should wear the protective headgear. “I’m totally in favor of helmets,” said the outspoken Chicago star. “So many tragic things can happen on the ice. The Hawks’ gritty little pivot doesn’t think the helmet issue will make any headway in the NHL until the league makes them…

DETROIT— Sid Abel had his eye on Gordie Howe’s birth certificate at the National Hockey League summer meetings and it says Gordie is 42 years old. So Abel made an end run around Boston Bruin general manager Milt Schmidt and grabbed promising right wing Tom Webster who scored 29 goals each of the last two seasons at Oklahoma City despite undergoing knee surgery each year to remove cartilages. Abel tried to made a direct Roger Crozier for Webster deal with Schmidt but Uncle Miltie wanted to keep Webster to himself and thought he’d worked a horse trade with Buffalo’s Punch Imlach to do it. Imlach had first call in the expansion draft and was supposed to take Garnet (Ace) Bailey. But Punch knows a club’s foundation is its goalkeeping and the old clubs weren’t about…

Eddie Bush Appointed Aces’ Coach

QUEBEC CITY— The Quebec Aces have another new hockey coach, their third in three years. Former NHL defenseman Eddie Bush has been hired to coach the American Hockey League team for the 1970-71 season. He replaces Walter (Turk) Broda, who guided the Aces for one season after taking over from Vic Stasiuk. Bush has been coaching the Hamilton Red Wings in the Ontario Junior Hockey League A series for the past few years. He led Hamilton to the Canadian junior championship in 1961 and 1962. The naming of Bush leaves the AHL with still one more coaching vacancy to fill. The Baltimore Clippers are seeking a successor to Rudy Migav, who has moved to Amarillo of theCHL.…
