Parise Proving Hit With Stars’ Fans; Burns Becomes Lone NHL Player-Coach

TWIN CITIES— One of these days, the St. Paul-oriented Minnesota Hockey Booster Club is going to complete its annual poll among spectators at Metropolitan Sports Center to determine the North Stars’ most popular player. Danny Grant walked off with the award last season to the surprise of nobody after J.P. Parise and Cesare Maniago had finished in a dead heat in 1967-68. At this writing, left winger Grant had 25 goals to his credit—nine fewer than last season when he also gained the coveted Calder award—but wasn’t challenging to repeat as “most popular. In fact, Danny was hearing more boos than cheers as the Stars struggled along from the middle of December to the beginning of March with only two victories and 12 ties in 35 games.
