<div class="byline">BY CHARLIE HALPIN</div>&bull; A MONTH AGO there was considerable speculation that the National Hockey League playoffs this season would be devoid of the Montreal Canadiens.Then they said, perish the thought. Now, they&rsquo;re saying it could happen.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01721/2630299-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="278" height="443"></div>The plight of the slumping Canadiens has given rise to the prospect that the NHL will experience its first all-American playoff in the long and vested history of the league.It has never happened before&mdash;and still may be averted if the Canadiens could put it all together for a few games in the stretch&mdash;but the situation has become perilous for the Habs, who have sunk to their lowest ebb since November, 1966 when they dropped five in a row. In their current lethargy they have lost four in a line.The hockey world has been shocked into the reality that the Canadiens have dropped all the way to fifth position in the six-team East Division because they can&rsquo;t seem to cut it any longer with NHL teams. What&rsquo;s the reason? That&rsquo;s the $64 question it seems, but not too many people have the answers.Most of the Canadiens themselves feel they have too much hockey talent on their club to miss the playoffs and they could be right. It wouldn&rsquo;t be the first time they&rsquo;ve been this low in the NHL race and came on to finish as high as first, but unfortunately (for them) not this late in the season. Back in 1947-48, the Canadiens didn&rsquo;t make it but they haven&rsquo;t even been close to elimination since that day and it is indeed unusual to see them wallowing in the NHL race.&bull; THE ALL-AMERICAN playoff could develop if neither the Canadiens nor the Toronto Maple Leafs struggle into the post-season round. The Leafs have already completed their part of the deal by being assured of ending up last. The Canadiens could be right behind.Another reason the Canadiens are floundering has been the tremendous closing kick being put on by the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks. Neither club is letting up in the final drive for playoff spots and at their current pace, could conceivably end up finishing second and third behind the Boston Bruins, who appear to have it all to stay on top for their first Prince of Wales Trophy conquest in nearly 30 years.If the trend continues, the NHL&rsquo;s Eastern picture will look like this on the April 5 windup weekend: 1. Boston. 2. Chicago. 3. Detroit. 4. New York. 5. Montreal. 6. Toronto.The closest the NHL has ventured to an &lsquo;American&rsquo; final in the last 10 years was in 1960-61 when Chicago took the Stanley Cup by defeating Detroit. Canadiens were out of the picture that year, too, but they did make the playoffs.The schedule possibly leans towards the Canadiens more than it does the Hawks and Red Wings in more home games and confrontations with the Western teams, but the Habs must face up to the Hawks in a schedule-closing home-and-home series, play another with Boston, meet the Rangers three times, twice in Montreal and have one game with Toronto and four with the expansion clubs.But no matter who the schedule favors, the Canadiens must get maximum effort from all hands and right now they&rsquo;re not. Big Jean Beliveau, Bobby Rousseau, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, Ralph Backstrom, Mickey Redmond and Claude Provost have not been near the perfection they displayed last season when the Canucks took it all. John Ferguson has been hurt too much, the defense is straining under the load and some of the Montrealers have given the distinct impression that they are &lsquo;over the hill&rsquo; and won&rsquo;t make it.If they don&rsquo;t, history will be made in the hallowed halls of the National Hockey League and it will go down as a real &lsquo;Star Spangled&rsquo; hockey campaign&mdash;with eight American teams battling for the Stanley Cup. &#9632;

ALL-AMERICAN PLAYOFFS LOOM FOR NHL

<div class="byline">BY TOM MONAHAN</div>BOSTON&mdash;In every sport, in every season there is a turning point. As far as the Bruins are concerned the turning point for their position in the NHL standings came on Feb. 26.That&rsquo;s the day the Bruins beat New York in Boston by a 5-3 score.This followed a 6-3 defeat at Chicago when Coach Harry Sinden had to replace Gerry Cheevers in goal with Eddie Johnston.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01630/2629965-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="251" height="413"><figcaption class="caption-body">Eddie Westfall</figcaption></div>The Bruins were on the edge of a whirlpool. If they didn&rsquo;t at least tread water and went into a four-game losing streak, the possibility of making the playoffs was shorter that a teenager&rsquo;s skirt.But the B&rsquo;s bounced back and not only beat New York with Cheevers in the nets, but Gerry also shut out Chicago 3-0 and then beat St. Louis 3-1.This put them one-point ahead of New York in the East Division race with but 15 games remaining in the season.&ldquo;There are a lot of times during the season when you can look back and say if we had won this game or hadn&rsquo;t tied that game things might have been different,&rdquo; said Coach Harry Sinden.&ldquo;But I&rsquo;ve got to think that three game stretch with New York, Chicago and St. Louis was the turning point for us.&ldquo;Naturally I am not predicting that those three victories mean we will win the NHL championship. We still have to keep winning.&ldquo;But the race was so close that a losing streak could make the difference in any of the first four places. It could even mean elimination from the playoffs.&ldquo;That was a critical stretch for us,&rdquo; said Sinden. &ldquo;It didn&rsquo;t clinch first place for us. That won&rsquo;t be decided until the final couple of games of the season the way the teams are battling now.&ldquo;But it did give us a lot of life. It was what I have to call the turning point.&ldquo;We not only moved into first place&mdash;even though it was by a point&mdash;but we were able to open some daylight between the third, fourth and fifth place teams.&rdquo;Sinden is realist enough to know that only mathematics finally determines the disposition of teams in the standing.He recalls that in 1951 Brooklyn had the National League pennant supposedly clinched with a 13 game lead going into the last month and lost to the Giants in a playoff.He also remembers, in baseball, that Philadelphia blew a six-game lead in the last week of the season.And applying that to hockey he recalls that New York needed only a win and a tie in its last six games to make the playoffs over Toronto but Toronto won five in a row and the Rangers lost the last game to sit on the sidelines.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s encouraging to know that there is a sort of cushion as far as the playoffs are concerned,&rdquo; but we still have to keep winning.&rdquo;Getting back to the game with Chicago as the key when Cheevers made his shutout comeback, Sinden used Eddie Westfall to stop Bobby Hull.&ldquo;I guess that disrupted Chicago&rsquo;s strategy somewhat,&rdquo; said Sinden with a slight grin. &ldquo;But it isn&rsquo;t the first time we have done it. This time it worked though. Eddie did a great job and so did everyone else.&ldquo;The team just seems to have come together and finally is playing great two-way hockey.&ldquo;At this time of year that&rsquo;s what you want. Every game in the season is important. But when you get down to the stretch, it&rsquo;s always nice to have the other guys chasing you.&ldquo;Time is running out and even a one point edge means a lot at this time of the year.&rdquo;ICE CHIPS&mdash; The Bruins brought rookie goalie Jack Adams back from Oklahoma City last week to spend the remainder of the season in practice with the parent club and to observe the other NHL competition&hellip;General Manager Milt Schmidt had no intention of using Adams in the stretch run&mdash;unless the Bruins had first place clinched&hellip;&ldquo;But we feel he is a fine prospect and thought it might be well for him to work out against our NHL players in practice and see what he might have to face in the future&rdquo;&hellip;From a physical standpoint the B&rsquo;s are in good shape going into the final two weeks of the schedule&hellip;And they were not concerned that they play four of their last six games on the road.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-02601/2629958-1-eng-US/f0002-022.jpg" title="f0002-02" width="1148" height="1527"><figcaption class="caption-body">Boston goaler GERRY CHEEVERS came up with a hot hand in Bruins&rsquo; three-game victory stretch, including 3-0 shutout of St. Louis.</figcaption></div> &#9632;

Beating Rangers, Hawks, Blues In Line Turning Point—Sinden

BOSTON&mdash;Ron Murphy, veteran left winger of the Boston Bruins, has decided to hang up his skates because of injuries.The 36-year-old Murphy, who has been plagued by recurrent shoulder ailments the last few years, has been out of action most of the current season because of injuries. He has appeared in 20 games.The Bruins announced that Murphy will be retained by the club in a special assignment capacity but did not disclose what his duties will be.Murphy has been playing in the NHL since 1953-54.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-03506/2629996-1-eng-US/f0002-032.jpg" title="f0002-03" width="270" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ron Murphy</figcaption></div> &#9632;

WILL INJURIES FORCE RANGERS INTO ANOTHER STRETCH FOLOUP?

NEW YORK&mdash;The New York Rangers obtained Tim Horton from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a desperate effort to shore up their defense which has been weakened by injuries to All Star defensemen Jim Neilson and Brad Park.&hellip;Neilson, who is suffering with ligament damage in his knee is expected back in the lineup shortly&mdash;with a knee brace protecting his damaged limb.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-03345/2630089-1-eng-US/f0003-032.jpg" title="f0003-03" width="264" height="432"><figcaption class="caption-body">Tim Horton</figcaption></div>Park, the victim of a Carl Brewer bodycheck in Detroit on February 19 is out until playoff time with a broken right ankle.Both the New York defense and attack had suffered with the two All-Stars on the sidelines. While Park was out the team fought valiantly to a 2-3-2 record.While it was hard to realize, the New York attack also suffered. Arnie Brown and Rod Seiling gave yoeman service in getting the puck out of the New York end, but the Rangers still were getting less shots on the net without the end to end rushes of Park and Neilson.The Rangers had to give up plenty, tour or five players to inherit Horton and his $80,000 salary but what the Leafs will receive as payment for Horton won&rsquo;t be known until the summer hockey meetings, but it will have to include left wingers and a right winger, the club&rsquo;s two requisites for next season. &#9632;

N.Y. Frantic, Grabs Horton

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div>NEW YORK&mdash;&ldquo;First we lost one all star defenseman, then a week later the other. Finally, even Donnie Marshall comes up with a shoulder injury just as we are in the midst of our toughest part of the schedule, ten games in sixteen days,&rdquo; intoned Emile Francis, the Rangers General Manager Coach. &ldquo;What the fellows need is a little rest&rdquo;.The fellows who needed the most rest were Arnie Brown and Rod Seiling, the last of the four regular defensemen New York carries. With All-Stars Jim Neilson (bad knee ligaments) and Brad Park, (broken right ankle) out, Brownie and Seiling have been doing extra duty. They were helping fifth defenseman Allan Hamilton and emergency recallees such as Larry Brown and Ab DeMarco Jr., over the hurdles. Neilson may return shortly with his knee in a brace.&ldquo;Those young fellows are learning the hard way,&rdquo; opined Francis. &ldquo;It will make better men out of them and may even help me with the decisions I have to make in the offseason.&rdquo;Be that as it may, New York fell out of sole possession of first place on March 1, after a loss to Chicago. They had maintained the lead for three and one half months, ever since grabbing it on November 16. The fall from the pinnacle could be traced strictly to the disastrous injuries. Marshall&rsquo;s replacement was Ted Irvine, obtained from the Los Angeles Kings in a two for one deal involving center Juha Widing and Real Lemieux, a winger.&ldquo;Irvine is tough and rugged and a 25 we think he will help this hockey club for a long time. I have been after him for over two years. Also, he strengthens the position we did most of our draft ing for last summer&mdash;left wing.&rdquo;Ted has done just that and fitted in quite well with Orland Kurtenbach and Bobby Nevin on the third or checking line. Another new Ranger is Don Blackburn, the former Philadelphia Flyer, who hs helped kill penalties in the player emergency. Blackburn knows what the game of hockey is all about and does a good job.Nonetheless, Francis was faced with regrouping and forming a new defense and power play in the stretch drive.In the meantime, young DeMarco made a fine impression as an offensive defenseman and point man. He has a quick release and more strength in his 157 pounds than is apparent. Like his father, a Ranger center from 1943 to 1947, Ab is a slickster with the puck.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01632/2630058-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg" title="f0003-01" width="563" height="573"><figcaption class="caption-body">ARNIE BROWN&hellip;Filling The Void</figcaption></div>The one man who has saved the Rangers in their hour of need has been Stewart Arnold Brown, five foot eleven inch, 180 pounder from Apsley, Ontario. Brown, obtained in the famous Andy Bathgate deal of February 1964 scored ten goals last season and has 14 so far, this campaign. He had been paired with Park before Brad was hurt and many times saved the young rusher when Bradford took off up ice.&ldquo;Brown had done a job for us, both defensively and on attack,&rdquo; enthuses Francis. &ldquo;He has a quick release with his shot and it is finding the mark. Also, with the other fellows out, Brown had been taking charge out there and showing he has what it takes.&rdquo;Arnie has been playing close to thirty&mdash;five minutes a game, sometimes even hitting forty as he kills penalties, plays the point on the power play and works all late game situations. His black hair flying and sweat dripping down his face, Arnie looks like what a pro athlete should look like. He keeps up an incessant chatter and somehow has been doing most of the work in getting the puck out of the New York end.At twenty-eight, Arnie would seem to be approaching the peak in his career. He is a man of determination, having staged a one-man holdout at training camp two seasons ago. We will never forget the picture of Arnie sitting alone in the stands as his teammates worked out. Alan Eagleson, the player&rsquo;s legal aide actually turned Brown&rsquo;s room into a command post and Arnie had to be worried about the reaction of the New York front office. If there were any problems since then, they have not appeared on the surface as Brown swears by Emile Francis and vice versa.&ldquo;Emile takes care of his own,&rdquo; says Arnie. &ldquo;I just try to hold up my end of the deal.&rdquo;BLUE CHIPS: Defenseman Mike Robitaille was returned to Omaha and Ab De Marco Jr. brought up on Feb. 27&hellip;When New York scored against Chicago on March 1 was their 130th straight league and playoff game without being blanked. This is an NHL record. The old record was 128 set by the 1940-42 Rangers&hellip;Eddie Giacomin and Tony Esposito of Chicago continue in a hot race for the Vezina Trophy&hellip; &#9632;

Arnie Brown Rises To Blueline Stardom During Emergency

The Rangers finally pried Tim Horton away from the Leafs for the stretch run, but if they hadn&rsquo;t been able to persuade Toronto to part with their $80,000-salaried All-Star, they were hot after another defenseman. Guess who? Harry Howell of Oakland of all people&hellip;If Glenn Hall commits himself to play another season with St. Louis, Jacques Plante may wind up wearing a Toronto Maple Leaf uniform. Source for the swap is none other than Blues&rsquo; coach Scotty Bowman, who insists such a trade would be made only if Hall gives the green light before the summer hockey meetings&hellip;Tim Horton and his wife, Lori, will finish out the season in New York while their four lovely daughters are being cared for by family friends in Toronto. Horton said he wasn&rsquo;t totally surprised by the deal&hellip;When injured Barry Gibbs came back to play for the North Stars, one of the hardest things Wren Blair had to do was inform Elmer Vasko he was headed back to Salt Lake City in the WHL. Big &lsquo;Moose&rsquo; played well enough filling in for Gibbs, it&rsquo;s just that he had to be returned under NHL emergency call-up rules. Minnesota fans gave him a rousing ovation in his first appearance&hellip;And speaking of Minnesota and their loyal&rsquo; hockey fandom. They have to rank with the best. Despite club&rsquo;s 30-game nosedive, the people never stopped coming. Some 14,925 packed the Met Center for the last Boston visit&hellip;Denis DeJordy created a modern hockey first when he was traded from Chicago to LA. He became the first goaler to play for two NHL teams in one season since 1945-46 when Paul Bibeault moved from Montreal to Boston. Gump Worsley came along last week to emulate the feat going from Montreal to Minnesota.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-02645/2630134-1-eng-US/f0004-022.jpg" title="f0004-02" width="262" height="442"><figcaption class="caption-body">Elmer Vasko</figcaption></div>&bull; THE DETROIT AND Chicago clubs are still counting dividends on their recent major player swaps but the Wings figure they gained a playoff edge by acquiring big Dale Rolfe from the Kings. Rolfe, when asked what he thought of the deal, said frankly, &lsquo;it&rsquo;s beautiful, the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me in hockey.&rdquo; Manager-coach Sid Abel figures the giant rearguard is going to be a tremendous help to the Wings&hellip;Abel, who just turned 52, got back on the blades for the annual Red Wings&rsquo; Old Timers game at the Olympia as Detroit reunited its once colorful Production Line of Abel, Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay, who is 44. Howe at 41 is playing his 24th year. Hockey people claim they have detected signs and talk that Howe will pack up it before another season because he&rsquo;s finding the game too much of a grind now. The Wings deny any retirement talk concerning Howe. No doubt the &lsquo;Great One&rsquo; will make the decision when he thinks it is time to go&hellip;The appointment of Bud Poile to replace Joe Crozier at Vancouver caused quite an upheaval on the West Coast. It also landed Bud in hospital with recurring nose bleeds&hellip;Pittsburgh Riley can&rsquo;t be faulted if he thinks Red Kelly has done the coaching job of the year with the Penguins. Riley also points out that the Pens have some pretty good hockey players this year, too. &ldquo;Imagine the job Red must have done for two seasons at Los Angeles,&rdquo; says Riley&hellip;Garry Unger, the mod center of the Red Wings, is not only fast on the draw with a hockey stick and puck. He&rsquo;s pretty good in the quip league, too. Recently at a businessmen&rsquo;s luncheon in Detroit, he was asked about his dates with Pam Aldred, Miss America 1970. Blushing only slightly, Unger replied: &ldquo;she deserved to win.&rdquo;&hellip;Toronto Leafs have put veteran goaler John Bower out to pasture after so many years top service. The onetime NHL referee reports his league will top the 1,000,000 mark, an increase of 242,500 over last season taking in both league and playoff games. The letter further went on to deride Bobby Orr as the &ldquo;fifteenth best defenseman in defensive terms&rdquo; in all of hockey.If I may be permitted to say so, no wonder he is fifteenth the other fourteen are obviously invisible. That is the team rarely gets the crusher when ahead by one goal, or it rarely gets a needed goal when one or two down. So why then would a team trade its best defensemen and what I, and others, consider one of the best goalers in hockey (Gerry Desjardins), for other defensemen and a goaler who has always been hot and cold? It is probably true that Bill White and the Kings have not gotten along, but if you&rsquo;re going to give up one of your best players, why not shore up your weakness, in this case, the offense?Some may say that the defense is the cause of the Kings failure; but just looking at the recent statistics in THE HOCKEY NEWS, their goalers had to stop 49, 61 and 55 shots in consecutive games. This indicates that no one is helping out. Also, think of the psychological burden the defense must carry. How would you like to be playing defense for a team that once it is behind is all but defeated?I am a displaced but avid King fan, and I was very disappointed by this trade, and especially disappointed at the loss of a very fine player, Gerry Desjardins. Also, thanks to THE HOCKEY NEWS and CBS for keeping the South from being &ldquo;hockeyless.&rdquo;TERRY WRIGHT, Shreveport, La.<h2>Relegation System Would Help Out West</h2>The decision to throw the two new teams into the Eastern Division is an insult to the intelligence of the paying fans.I suggest that a reasonable approach would regard the Eastern Division as the superior division it really is. The new teams should obviously come into the Western Division, for the sake of all concerned. The team finishing first in the West this season should be moved into the East next season.This relegation and promotion pattern can be followed each season, with the first place Western team moving into the East, and the last-place East team moving down into the West. Might not this be added incentive for a Western club to move up? It would certainly tend to better balance and sharper competition for playoff spots. Can this be bad for hockey?Also, more games among their own divisions can greatly help the Western Division. LOUIS&mdash;Scotty Bowman, the imaginative young coach of the St. Louis Blues, has come up with some ideas to ease the burden of the referee.&ldquo;The game has become so fast.&rdquo; Bowman says, &ldquo;that it is very difficult for the one ret free to make a snap decision in some situations.&ldquo;The National Hockey League has been reluctant to give the linesmen any duties but calling offside infractions,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;But there are so many plays and so many altercations that covering the entire rink is a tough job for one man.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-01647/2630244-1-eng-US/f0005-012.jpg" title="f0005-01" width="254" height="408"><figcaption class="caption-body">Scotty Bowman</figcaption></div>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not criticizing the refs; their standard of enforcement is fine,&rdquo; Bowman said. &ldquo;But every year can&rsquo;t be a good year for the referees. I just have to hope that the referee&mdash;whoever he is&mdash;can see everything in favor of our club.&rdquo;Bowman&rsquo;s brother, Jack, is a referee for junior games in Quebec and has officiated at games in the Ontario Hockey Association.&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know why he wants the job,&rdquo; Scotty said with a grin. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a thankless one.&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve never seen my brother referee a game,&rdquo; Bowman said. &ldquo;But I understand he takes his work seriously, and I&rsquo;m told that he&rsquo;s done a good job.&rdquo;Bowman says one possible solution to easing the pressure on the ref is to have some kind of official in the stands, &ldquo;maybe a young referee who could take notes without any pressure and at least could be a witness on anything major that happens.&rdquo;Scotty was behind the Blues&rsquo; bench the night that Wayne Maki&rsquo;s stick fractured the skull of Boston&rsquo;s Ted Green in an exhibition game.&ldquo;I saw the full incident and I was called to testify during the court case in Ottawa,&rdquo; Bowman said. &ldquo;I had all the time in the world before I testified to make sure in mv own mind of what I saw that night&mdash;and it wasn&rsquo;t easy. But the referee has to make a split-second decision.&ldquo;The ref is supposed to keep his eye on the puck, and some players are becoming extremely skillful at committing fouls behind the refs back,&rdquo; Bowman said. &ldquo;The ref may be positioned correctly but he may not be able to see everything that&rsquo;s going on.&rdquo;Bowman added, &ldquo;There have been so many things this year involving our team, so many plays and so many altercations that I favor some help for the refereeing.&rdquo;He said, &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve even had fellows fined for leaving the bench during a fight and we&rsquo;ve had to write the league a letter and say, &lsquo;no, that particular player was already on the ice.&rsquo; The ref has enough trouble watching the players on the ice without trying to keep track of everybody on the bench.&rdquo;Bowman said, &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t want more penalties&mdash;that&rsquo;s not good hockey. But we want the right ones called, because it sure is difficult to change one after it&rsquo;s called.&rdquo; &#9632;

Scotty Bowman Says Refs Need Help, Claims “Job Too Tough For One Man”

OTTAWA&mdash;Wayne Maki is a free man today and the decision to acquit him on a charge of assault to cause bodily harm by wielding a hockey stick against another player will no doubt have a distinctive bearing on all future professional sports.Maki, who has charged after a stick-swinging duel that proved almost fatal to Boston defenseman Ted Green last September during a training camp exhibition game, was pleased with the decision of the court.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m glad it&rsquo;s all over,&rdquo; said the harassed young forward, who has been having his problems on the ice as well as off. The St. Louis Blues, who recently recalled him from Buffalo of the AHL, sent him back to the minors last week because of his sub-par ice performance with the Blues.NHL President Clarence Campbell said of the decision to free Maki, &ldquo;everyone in the NHL is gratified&rdquo;.Green, who suffered a severe fractured skull that required three operations, the last to insert a plastic plate in his head, faces a reduced charge of common assault. He is expected to be acquitted of the charge although if found guilty could incur up to two years in jail or fined or given a suspended sentence. Should Green receive the latter, he would be barred from playing hockey in the United States.The NHL took an optimistic outlook of the decision to free Maki.Campbell said the judge&rsquo;s decision &ldquo;is not necessarily a vindication of the NHL and its method of operation.&ldquo;The consequences of a conviction could have been very embarrassing&mdash;not only to hockey, but to all sports&rdquo;, Campbell said.A conviction would have provided a precedent for the &ldquo;intervention of civil authorities in respect to incidents occurring in actual play.&rdquo; commented the president.Had the decision gone against Maki, the NHL&rsquo;s power over its performers in such cases would have been jeopardized. &#9632;

But the question is whether the team will hold together physically long enough to take full advantage of all the benefits.Defenseman, Bill White, goalie Gerry Desjardins, and center Bryan Campbell have made valuable contributions in every game they&rsquo;ve played since the deal in which they came to the Hawks in exchange for goalie Denis DeJordy, defenseman Gilles Marotte, and minor league forward Jim Stanfield was made.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-02585/2630337-1-eng-US/f0006-022.jpg" title="f0006-02" width="251" height="437"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bill White</figcaption></div>But as Billy Reay heads his charges out of the stretch turn and into the final run for a playoff berth in the East division, the lame and halt Hawks nearly outnumber the healthy ones.Most notable cripples are Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and White. Bobby suffered a knee injury during a 3-1 victory over New York. Mikita, who has been wearing a bulky brace to relieve his chronically sore back, came out of a recent Boston game with a leg problem, and White has been playing on a pair of knees which would have gotten him shot by now if he were a horse.&ldquo;White deserves a tremendous amount of credit for this win,&rdquo; said Bill&rsquo;s defensive running mate Doug Mohns, after a nationally-televised victory ever the Rangers. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s playing on two badly banged-up knees and I know he&rsquo;s had a lot of pain.&rdquo;It may be that White has insisted upon playing despite the injuries out of the same appreciation at being with the Hawks that Desjardins expressed after his first stint in the nets for his new employers.&ldquo;You could say I&rsquo;m bubbling over with joy,&rdquo; said Gerry, after turning in a strong performance during a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia. &ldquo;The big thing is that there&rsquo;s a winning attitude on his club that neither White nor I experienced too much in Los Angeles.&rdquo;Even Campbell, who was regarded strictly as a throw-in, chipped in with a big play the first time Reay turned him loose. Bryan didn&rsquo;t even dress for the first three games the Hawks played after the trade, then failed to put in any ice time in the first game for which he was in uniform.However, Reay had Campbell on hand for the afternoon game against New York to spell Mikita after Stan came up lame. Bryan was working in Stan&rsquo;s spot between Dennis Hull and Cliff Koroll in the third period with the Hawks attempting to protect a 2-1 lead.Campbell was on a fore-checking expedition in Ranger territory when rookie Ab DeMarco attempted to carry the puck toward the blueline. <div class="byline">&#x2014;By Bill Libby</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-01707/2630520-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="305" height="385"></div><h2>Of Bowman And The Red Baron</h2>THE EXPANSION TEAMS have lost, not gained stature this season as their three-year quest for equality with the established clubs seems to have gone in reserve, but the one among them who continues to hold their banner high is the St. Louis Blues, coached by Scotty Bowman to domination in the Western Division. The Blues are headed for their second straight runaway pennant and are favored to win a third straight divisional playoff. Having beaten Montreal a couple of times in Montreal, they could even atone some for having been blown out in four straight games both times they met Montreal&rsquo;s Eastern champs in previous playoffs. They blazed the trail for expansionists in sellout attendance. Their furious fans now give them a big edge.Bowman, the reformed bachelor, is the big man, of course. Lynn Patrick, who would have been in charge in L.A. had Dan Reeves landed that franchise, laid down the design and brought in Bowman, who has executed it. He is tough and proud and has put it to the other expansionists with his old men, whom he says are really not so old. Not counting, of course, goalkeepers Jacques Plante, 41, and Glenn Hall, 38, or defenseman Al Arbour, 37, who are masters of their profession, but wouldn&rsquo;t even be in the majors if it wasn&rsquo;t for the Blues, But Bowman, who won&rsquo;t come right out and say it, suggests that maybe the biggest Blue of all is Ted Red Baron, Red Berenson. The team was struggling and took off after he came on.Gordon Arthur Berenson of Regina, Saskatchewan, went from the University of Michigan to the Montreal Canadiens, where he sat on the bench a lot and was sent out to the minors a lot, and then to New York Rangers, where he sat on the bench some more, and he was almost 28 and he had been a pro for seven seasons and he was nowhere when the Blues traded Ron Stewart and Ron Attwell for him and Barclay Plager in one of the most one-sided deals in hockey history. Now the helmeted southpaw center is 30 and one of the great players in the game.It was after a recent game when Berenson scored a goal that broke the game wide open that Bowman stood sweating and sighing with relief in a corner of the Blues&rsquo; dressing room and nodded in Berenson&rsquo;s direction and said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not just that he got a big goal, which he does a lot, but that he makes good plays and checks and digs. How many other players in this game score 30 or 35 goals a season and play defense, too?&rdquo;Berenson, a powerful skater who can shoot backhanders, scored six goals in a game in Philadelphia in November of 1968 and some say he has been living off that ever since, but they&rsquo;re wrong, because this is a fellow who does it all. That was just his given game: He&rsquo;s not a six-goals-in-a-game guy. Who is? But he&rsquo;s a heck of a hockey player. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s kind of hard living up to that game,&rdquo; Berenson smiles. &ldquo;I just try hard to do the best I can all the time.&rdquo;In New York, he broke a foot and then he broke his jaw. In St. Louis, he played in the playoffs after his wife lost a child. It is not all bright lights and cheers and headlines. Sometimes it is painful and sometimes it is suffering. But he&rsquo;s a professional with a job to do and he does it well. They looked down on him as a collegian, and because he&rsquo;d never had much of a chance, they thought he probably wasn&rsquo;t much of a player, but they were wrong, as they often are.He is soft-spoken and scholarly. He is a quiet family man with a wife, Joy, a son and two daughters. He reads a lot, but stretches off-seasons hunting and fishing in the wilds. And 80-some games a season he plays hard every minute he&rsquo;s on the ice every game, one of the old pros who has lifted this team above the other teams in their division, some of whom would seem to have as much natural talent at their disposal. There are other Blues.<h2>And Some Other Bright Blues</h2>PHIL GOYETTE is 36 and is in his 14th season in the NHL. He played seven seasons in Montreal and six seasons in New York and this season was traded for youth in the form of a first-round amateur draft choice. And this season he will score more goals for the Blues than he ever scored for any other team since he reached the big time. &ldquo;I guess Rangers figured I was fading and you can&rsquo;t say they&rsquo;ve been suffering without me,&rdquo; he smiles, &ldquo;but I figured I had something left and I was happy to come here, where they do so much for a player.&rdquo; The Salomons, of course, have spoiled players for other owners. They spoil players, but somehow it hasn&rsquo;t spoiled their playing.Noel Picard. The Plager brothers. Jim Roberts, who seldom scores, except when it matters, and always hustles. Ab McDonald. Bill McCreary. Ernie Wakely. Tim Ecclestone. Frank St. Marseille. Who are these guys, who do so well? Eleven games later he was with St. Louis and now he&rsquo;s been there three years and no one notices him, but he helps them win games. &ldquo;We just took a chance on him because he had a good year in the International League,&rdquo; Lynn Patrick admits. <div class="byline">BY ED CONRAD</div>PHILADELPHIA&mdash;If the Flyers finish off the season with a bang, don&rsquo;t be surprised if the most valuable player turns out to be Kate Smith.Sure, Bernie Parent&rsquo;s goaltending will have contributed a big part, Gary Dornhoefer, Andre Lacroix and Jean Guy Gendron all will have contributed over 20 goals, the Hillman brothers&mdash;Larry and Wayne&mdash;will have bolstered the defense, and Earl Heiskala and Reggie Fleming will have added muscle.But, if records speak for themselves, nobody in the entire league has a better record than Kate Smith.It&rsquo;s actually &ldquo;God Bless America,&rdquo; an envigorating recording the famous singer cut way back in 1938. The reaction met with scattered complaints but generally was quite enthusiastic.In fact, after Kate&rsquo;s singing had preceded the Flyers&rsquo; shutout of the Blues on national television, the club reports that letters have come in from all sections of the country praising the team for pioneering the song which many people feel will some day become the National Anthem.One thing the Flyers can be accused of, however, is picking their spots for putting Kate to the test. Eight of the nine games have been against West Division opposition, while only one&mdash;the victory over Toronto which started the streak&mdash;has come against East Division opponents.In any event, it has helped the Flyers play consistently against all comers despite a rash of injuries of late. Goalie Doug Favell (cut Achilles tendon), Joe Watson (broken bone in his foot), Wayne Hillman (sprained knee) and Gendron (injured left hand) all were out at about the same time.Nevertheless, the Flyers were hanging in there trying to beat out the Penguins for second place. &#9632;

Hockey Flyers Swing When Kate Smith Sings The ‘National Anthem’

<div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div>LOS ANGELES&mdash;Their record still on the decline, the Kings are continuing to remake their team. In the latest transaction, they surrendered Ted Irvine to the New York Hangers in return for Real Lemieux and Juha Widing. So far seven players have been sent from Los Angeles in exchange for eight from other teams all in less than one month. This is a massive amount of change.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-02639/2630589-1-eng-US/f0009-022.jpg" title="f0009-02" width="279" height="434"><figcaption class="caption-body">Real Lemieux</figcaption></div>It was inevitable. Near the end of February the Kings completed the worst quarter in their three-year history, the third quarter of the current campaign, one victory, 16 defeats and two ties. This is worse than their previous worst, the first quarter of this season, 3-15-1. The second quarter ranks next worst, 5-10-4.Owner Jack Kent Cooke, who replaced Hal Laycoe with Johnny Wilson after 24 games, says, &ldquo;I know now it isn&rsquo;t the coaches. Obviously it is the players.&rdquo; He is seeking tough, spirited fighters, fellows with character. He has had to give up some good players, but you have to give up something good to get something good, and the team as it has been constituted has steadily been getting worse since its first half season in existence.The trade was a bad break for Lemieux, who had been a spare and penalty-killer on a pennant contender and playoff threat, in line for a lot of extra bonus money. Traded to New York for Leon Rochefort and Dennis Hextall before this season, he suddenly at the end of the season finds himself back in L.A., on a last place team.However; Cooke likes Lemieux, who he says, &ldquo;would try to run through a brick wall for a fellow,&rdquo; Real has that sort of desire, though at 25 after three big league seasons it has not been translated into many goals. Nor at 175 pounds is he a bruiser. But he is a good skater and a scrapper and he can kill off penalties, an art which the Kings need badly.Widing, pronounced &ldquo;Veedeeng,&rdquo; replaced Orland Kurtenbach in the deal as originally designed. Born in Uleaborg, Finland, and reared in Sweden, he came to Canada only six years back. Only 22, a 6-1, 190-pounder, he led the Central League with 40 goals last season and showed promise of developing into a fine scorer and playmaker with Rangers this season. He could make this a great deal.Irvine is the same size, but three years older. He can skate and shoot, but he is a sensitive youngster who lacks confidence in himself and seldom played up to his potential. The Kings waited on him longer than most would have. Mild-mannered and bespectacled, the Rangers will find he is a fine fighter if forced, as he was the best on the Kings.The veteran Rochefort has had a disappointing campaign and at 30 is a question-mark for the future. Hextall was disappointing and is in the minors in Montreal after being traded to Canadiens for Dick Duff, who has been a disappointment. Nearing 34, Duff has slowed down. Could he become the Kings&rsquo; next coach? Instead of Doug Harvey? Or will Hal Laycoe get a second chance, which wouldn&rsquo;t be a bad idea. <div class="byline">BY SPENCE CONLEY</div>OAKLAND&mdash;Earl Ingarfield was bent over with pain as he skated off the ice in the third period of a 6-3 Oakland Seals&rsquo; win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.As he stepped through the big gate onto the rubber runway to the Seal dressing room, he pressed the ice pack even tighter to his right hand and commented to a sportswriter:&rdquo;broken thumb.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01707/2630668-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="263" height="440"><figcaption class="caption-body">Earl Ingarfield</figcaption></div>He continued into the dressing room to learn that he had, indeed, broken his thumb and would be out of action for at least a week.At that point it was hard to tell which hurt most, the injury or the realization that he had just suffered his third serious injury of the current season.Certainly, the fact that the popular center-wing was their leading scorer with 16 goals and 36 points in 40 games, makes his loss an even more bitter blow to his teammates&mdash;the hottest squad in the National Hockey League&rsquo;s West Division recently.It has been a season of acute frustration for the 36-year-old Ingarfield, however.Back in training camp, he was stepped on during a fight in Quebec during an exhibition game with the Flyers and suffered a badly cut set of tendons in his right wrist. He missed six weeks of action.Then, just when he&rsquo;d hit his peak performance again, he was struck in the eye with a stick in the New York Ranger game of Jan. 30 He missed some more time.This most recent injury occurred when he was checked from behind by Pittsburgh&rsquo;s Nick Harbaruk and sent crashing into the boards. Harbaruk was sent off for charging and Ingarfield went to the hospital.As first it was believed that the T-shaped fracture in the very tip of his thumb might not keep him from playing. But it didn&rsquo;t turn out that way.&ldquo;At the hospital, they put a splint on it and sent me home. But that night it started to throb pretty badly and every time I&rsquo;d bump it, the pain would drive me up the wall. So the next morning I went back to the hospital and they put a cast on it. That eased the pain a lot,&rdquo; Ingarfield explained.The cast was to remain on his thumb, palm and wrist for a week and was due to be removed on March 4. At that time it may be possible to outfit him with a special splint or cast in order to let him play, but that depends, of course, on the progress of healing.&ldquo;What a year I&rsquo;m having,&rdquo; lamented Ingarfield, &ldquo;I just get over one thing and something else happens. It&rsquo;s awful!&rdquo;This particular injury had him puzzled, however. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s really odd, especially since the fiber tip of the glove thumb extends over the actual thumb by about an inch or more. So getting hurt like that is really unusual.&rdquo;It was the second major injury to the Seals in two games. The other occurred two games earlier when defenseman Bert Marshall suffered a badly wrenched back in a fall against the boards.But Marhsall was due back for the Seals&rsquo; road trip hopefully ready to pick up right where he left off as one of the Seals best defensemen.In the meantime, the Seals had done a pretty good job of solidifying their hold on fourth place in the West Division and continuing the pressure on Pittsburgh and Philadelphia for second and third.In their last eight games they had won five and tied one with victories over New York, Montreal, and St. Louis. &#9632;

Seals’ Star Suffers Third Major Injury

OAKLAND&mdash;Attendance at Oakland Seals&rsquo; home games continues to rise. Seals&rsquo; president William N. Creasy, Jr. announced that the month of February was the best in club history.The Seals drew 52,053 to the Oakland Coliseum-Arena for seven home games last month for a per game average of 7,436. The most productive month last season was also February when the team drew 44,546 for seven games, an average of 6,364.The February figures bring the Seals attendance for the current NHL campaign to 168,855, an average of 6,217. Through the same number of home games last season the total was 126,285, an average of 4,677.The Seals started off the month of March like a lion. They drew 12,042 for a March 6 game against Chicago, an all-time high for a home game. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY PAT CURRAN</div>MONTREAL&mdash;Whatever has gone wrong with the once-mighty Canadiens, management doesn&rsquo;t think it&rsquo;s the fault of Claude Ruel. He has been given a vote of confidence in the form of a new contract and a salary raise for next season.President J. David Molson and G.M. Sam Pollock announced the signing while simultaneously issuing an ultimatum to some of the players who hadn&rsquo;t been putting out for the sophomore coach.Pollock said the contract was signed now, rather than after the season, in order to dispel any rumors concerning Ruel&rsquo;s status in the Montreal organization. It amounted to a threat that the Canadiens will play for Ruel or wind up with some other club.&ldquo;We wanted to be sure everyone knew where they stood,&rdquo; said Pollock, &ldquo;particularly the players on our team, so that every effort can be made the rest of the schedule to recapture the Prince of Wales Trophy which we won under Ruel last year with a record breaking 103 points.&rdquo;The decision to hand the 31-year-old coach a new contract and to warn some of the slumping Habs came just after the team had been beaten at Pittsburgh. It was the second straight loss to an expansion team and left Montreal in jeopardy of missing a playoff berth in the East Division.Ruel, himself, had been responsible for rumors that he might be on the way out as coach of the Canadiens&mdash;possibly without finishing his second season despite a clean sweep of league and Stanley Cup honors in his first turn at the helm in 1968 69.Three weeks earlier, he said he was ready to resign if management thought someone else behind the bench could get more out of the athletes. Following a 5-3 loss at Toronto, the coach admitted talking to Molson and Pollock about stepping out of the job.&ldquo;I told them if they felt someone else could get more out of those who wouldn&rsquo;t work for me, not to be afraid to make the move,&rdquo; said Ruel at the time.Management talked him out of it and team-captain Jean Beliveau voiced the sentiments of several players.&ldquo;Anyone who feels he can&rsquo;t play for Ruel is only fooling himself,&rdquo; said Jean. &ldquo;After all we are all playing for the same thing&mdash;to win.&rdquo;Ruel&rsquo;s constant complaint had been that the Habs haven&rsquo;t been working as a team but have been relying on five or six players to carry the load from game to game.Thus the coach was relieved when offered a contract for next season with the full support of G.M. Pollock in dealing with the players.&ldquo;The cards are on the table now,&rdquo; said Ruel. &ldquo;I have 21 players and I&rsquo;ll use those who really want to work. <div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>&ldquo;you like 7up 7up likes you&rdquo;&ldquo;you like 7up 7up likes you&rdquo;DETROIT&mdash;Flying home after a satisfying road victory, Red Wing manager coach Sid Abel said he figured 90 points would be good for a playoff spot in the National Hockey League&rsquo;s Eastern Division.Abel based his computation on what it took to make the grade last season when Toronto won the final berth with 85 points.Everything&rsquo;s up this year&hellip;bread, milk, butter and eggs&hellip;so Abel allowed for inflation and tacked on five more points.But you know how the spiral keeps spiraling. Well, it appears 90 points won&rsquo;t be enough if the Chicago Black Hawks keep playing the way they have been.As March roared in the Red Wings were 12 points over .500 and the only times they&rsquo;ve been better than that in the past 20 years they won the league championship.Everyone else&hellip;except Toronto, of course&hellip;in the East has been caught up in the inflation. A major reason is that the East is really clobbering the West this season and, for a change, the Red Wings joined the party.Their record isn&rsquo;t anything like Boston&rsquo;s but it has been an improvement over the past two years.Detroit was 18-13-5 won-lost-tied against the West last season but this time around was 18-7-5 with six games remaining. The Wings captured the season series from St. Louis, Philadelphia, Oakland and Los Angeles, were up on Pittsburgh and needed two victories to down Minnesota, their toughest Western rival.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-01663/2631066-1-eng-US/f0014-012.jpg" title="f0014-01" width="262" height="438"><figcaption class="caption-body">Sid Abel</figcaption></div>Despite that, Chicago&rsquo;s done a little better. And, if both teams maintained their pace, Chicago would finish with 92 points and Detroit&rsquo;s 90 wouldn&rsquo;t be good enough.Abel sees it as a three-way race, however, with Montreal a member. Just when it appears the Canadiens are going to make a run at defending their title, they fall on their faces and get back down in the fight with Detroit and Chicago. Montreal slumped to fifth last weekend, but most of its remaining games are against Western teams.Oddly enough, Montreal and Detroit have a common problem&mdash;the failure to win on home ice. Repeatedly the Wings have lost or tied key games at home and the embarrassment has come before record crowds.There was Jan. 25 when 15,388 jammed in, largest crowd ever to see the Wings play at Olympia. What did they do? Lost 4-1 to Montreal with an uninspired performance.Then there was Feb. 22, birthday of George Washington and Sid Abel. The four-week-old record was broken when two more fans wedged in for a 15,390 count. And the Wings lost, 1-0, to Montreal.Six days later 15,390 more packed the house and the Wings wasted 1-0 and 2-1 leads and barely managed a 3-3 tie with New York when Bruce MacGregor deflected a Wayne Connelly shot with the Wing goal empty for a sixth attacker.During New York&rsquo;s previous visit the Wings squandered a 3-1 lead and were tied, 3-3, by the persistent Rangers.On the positive side has been the play of left wing Nick Libett who cracked a six-week slump in style after being moved to Garry Unger&rsquo;s line.Libett started skating with verve again, started forechecking zestfully&hellip;and started collecting points. The 24-year-old left wing from Stratford, Ont., scored four goals and assisted on four in five games.The outburst lifted his goal production to 16 with 17 games remaining and gave him a good shot at a 20-goal season which seemed to be fading out of sight. Libett scored 10 goals last year, his first full term in the NHL.New defenseman Dale Rolfe has been so impressive that Abel sent Poul Popiel back to Cleveland in the American League and will go with five defensemen&mdash;Rolfe, Bob Baun, Carl Brewer, Gary Bergman and Ron Harris.RED WING NOTES: The Wings scored their three fastest goals of the season in a 7-1 rout of Oakland with Billy Dea, Rolfe and Frank Mahovlich connecting in a span of one minute and 25 seconds.Gordie Howe and Libett added goals a bit later for five markers in 10 minutes and seven seconds.Shutouts just aren&rsquo;t to be for the Wing goalkeepers this season. Roy Edwards has the only one and he lost a bid for a second when Oakland&rsquo;s Billy Hicke scored with 5:01 to play&hellip;his first goal in 21 games.The Red Wings and Red Wing Old Timers played a 6-6 tie before 10,283 fans for the benefit of amateur hockey in metropolitan Detroit and old hero Ted Lindsay scored twice on setups from old Production Line mate Howe who was &ldquo;borrowed&rdquo; by the Old Timers.They weren&rsquo;t soft goals, either, nor was one by Howe. The three came in a span of one minute and 57 seconds and for those few minutes, it was like old times at Olympia.On hand were Red Wing Hall of Famers Bucko McDonald Black Jack Stewart, Syd Howe, Ebbie Goodfellow, Doug Young, Herbie Lewis, George Hay, Carl Liscombe and Johnny Mower&hellip;plus the two men who played the major roles in hockey&rsquo;s longest game, Normie Smith who was in goal the night of March 24-25, 1936 when Detroit went to 16:30 of the sixth overtime to defeat the Montreal Maroons, and Mud Bruneteau, the man who scored the game&rsquo;s only goal. &#9632;

Abel Raises Wings’ Point Count To Grab Playoff

<h2>In The East</h2>Little John McKenzie of the Bruins isn&rsquo;t one to be trifled with on the ice nor can he be left uncovered it seems around the net. The dynamic Boston right winger has a penchant for shooting the big goals&mdash;particularly those important game winners.The hard-nosed Bruin was among the most productive forwards in the NHL this past week and included among his production were three goals&mdash;to raise his season total to 26&mdash;and one game-winning goal, his sixth of the season.McKenzie was a one-man show for the B&rsquo;s in their 5-5 tie against Philadelphia as he figured in four of the five goals, scoring two himself. But it happened and the culprit was Bill Collins of the Minnesota North Stars. Collins, who forms one half of the North Stars highly effective penalty killing team, decided to show his offensive scoring prowess as he rattled in four goals&mdash;three of them in one game and two while his teammates were playing shorthanded.Scoring with the other team holding the manpower advantage is one of Collins&rsquo; specialties. Parise and Cesare Maniago had finished in a dead heat in 1967-68.At this writing, left winger Grant had 25 goals to his credit&mdash;nine fewer than last season when he also gained the coveted Calder award&mdash;but wasn&rsquo;t challenging to repeat as &ldquo;most popular. In becoming the first playing coach in the NHL since Doug Harvey did double duty with New York in 1961-62, Burns centered one of four lines and played an extremely fine checking game as well as helping Collins, Parise and Capt. Claude Larose with penalty-killing duties.The idea of using four lines after having played the night before in Philadelphia was hailed by everyone.Burns knew his charges would be more tired than usual and rarely were any of his lines on for more than 60 seconds at a time against the Maple Leafs, who despite their lowly standing in the East are still classified as one of the league&rsquo;s top skating teams when they want to skate.Whether or not Charlie will continue to dress wasn&rsquo;t made clear by the rookie coach. But off his showing against Toronto, one would have to conclude that he couldn&rsquo;t go wrong by doing so.&ldquo;He sparked us, no doubt about it,&rdquo; said Collins after the game, and Billy wasn&rsquo;t blowing smoke. &#9632;

TORONTO&mdash;The Toronto Leafs, out of the NHL playoff running this season, had to do some further player shuffling last week after a six-game suspension was imposed on defenseman Jim Dorey.Big Pat Quinn, who was assigned to Tulsa of the Central League to reduce the Leafs&rsquo; overstaffed defense after Tim Horton had been sold to New York, had to hurry back to Toronto when Dorey was set down by NHL President Clarence Campbell.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-02412/2631385-1-eng-US/f0016-022.jpg" title="f0016-02" width="263" height="426"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jim Dorey</figcaption></div>The sale of Horton and Quinn&rsquo;s option to the CHL, reduced the Toronto backline to Rick Ley, Jim McKenny, Mike Pelyk, Brian Glennie and Dorey. But Dorey ran into trouble with the league for striking linesman Pat Shetler during the third period of the March 1 game against Minnesota North Stars.Shetler, who was attempting to restrain Dorey in his efforts to get at Minnesota captain Claude Larose, found himself on the receiving end of a blow from Dorey. The report to Campbell carried the incident and Dorey was subsequently suspended for the next six games.The flareup also saw both the Toronto and Minnesota benches emptied during the fighting and Campbell promptly slapped fines on the guilty players.First to leave the benches was Danny O&rsquo;Shea of the North Stars, followed by Barry Gibbs and Toronto&rsquo;s Terry Clancy. Wayne Maki Returned By Blues As Bisons Lose Three Players

As coach Frank Mathers often says when his Hershey Bears are in trouble: &ldquo;I guess I&rsquo;ll have to go to the mirror again.&rdquo;Following a disastrous eight-game road swing last month, Mathers, the Manitoba native, tapped his magic mirror and overnight the club broke its losing ways.With 12 of its last 20 games on home ice, Mathers and his charges tightened ranks and from Feb. 18 until Feb. 27, the Bears lost only one of five starts.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll play everyone from now on as though it was a playoff game,&rdquo; said Mathers, following the club&rsquo;s return home.In the five-game span, goalie Andre Gill, getting a solid effort in front of him, allowed only 11 goals on 182 shots against him as Hershey rung up a 2-2-1 log.And one of the club&rsquo;s most effective lines was center Bobby Leiter and his wingmen, Stan Gilbertson and Bud Debrody. Gilbertson, bothered with a painful elbow and operating at about 80 percent physically, notched three goals and five assists in the five games. Leiter set up seven goals and notched one, while Debrody hammered in three markers.Another standout for the past two months has been rookie Bill Lesuk. He scored 11 goals since the first of the year, jacking his season total to 14.Center Mike Nvkoluk. striving for an All-Star team berth, reached another milestone in his 14-year American League career against the Cleveland Barons on Feb. 25. He scored on a breakaway to post his 774th point. It made him the league&rsquo;s ninth all-time scorer. The position was formely held by Bruce Cline, retired Hershey star, who ended his career with 773.Defenseman Ralph Keller, one of Hershey&rsquo;s many walking wounded, returned to action after recovering from a leg injury, among other ailments.Veteran forward Michel Harvey is still on the shelf with a shoulder separation and isn&rsquo;t expected to return until the playoffs.The brightest piece of news from the Bears&rsquo; lair was that goalie John Henderson may be ready to return to action before mid-March. He was sidelined following knee surgery.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m running about a mile or so every day,&rdquo; said Henderson. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been playing paddle ball and taking other exercises. The knee feels fine and I have no weight problem.&rdquo;Gill has been under tremendous pressure in the stretch run with the goal duties falling on his shoulders.&ldquo;Andy&rsquo;s come up with some big games for us,&rdquo; said Mathers. &ldquo;He could use a little rest, but the way he&rsquo;s been playing lately he&rsquo;ll be tough to get out of the lineup.&rdquo;Gill&rsquo;s been under fire for 42 of the club&rsquo;s 56 games. He had a winning record of 17-16-8 as of Feb. 27. In 2,472 minutes of play he allowed 135 goals and registered one shutout.The Bears&rsquo; entire defense corps, Barry Ashbee, Bob Barber, Larry McNabb, Pete Ford, Mike Mahoney and Keller have been playing a strong game and their efforts will be a big factor in the stretch drive.Ken McKenzie, publisher of THE HOCKEY NEWS, visited here Feb. 28 to present Mathers with the top minor league executive award of 1968-69. Mathers also doubles as the club&rsquo;s general manager. Aroused Bears Gear For Final Run With 12 Of Last 20 Games At Home

<div class="byline">BY GEORGE DUFFY</div>PROVIDENCE&mdash;Tony Featherstone and Ron Stackhouse, a couple of Oakland youngsters assigned to the Providence Reds, have earned the cheers of the standing room only crowds at R.I. Auditorium, but in a far different way.The 20-year-olds who played for the Peterboro Petes last season are practically inseparable. When the Reds are on the move, whether it be plane or bus, Featherstone, a rough tough 192 pounder, has Stackhouse, a 6-3 gangler, happily in tow.Featherstone, who came to the Reds with the reputation of being a fighter, has not disappointed the throngs who are on hand for every Reds&rsquo; game, proving again and again that the Rhode Island franchise in the American League is one of the best in the minor league ranks.While Featherstone won early acclaim, his running mate Stackhouse had it rougher, much rougher. In some of his early games with Providence, Ron made some mistakes and the bleacherites, as vocal as any in hockey, began to ride the big kid. It was almost unmerciful at times and finally Coach Dave Creighton devised a new formula for his rangy defenseman. Stackhouse played only on the road.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-01405/2631554-1-eng-US/f0018-012.jpg" title="f0018-01" width="537" height="592"><figcaption class="caption-body">RON STACKHOUSE&hellip;The Booing Stopped</figcaption></div>But as time wore on and Stackhouse played one good game after another away from home, it becames apparent that, like it or not, the Providence hecklers were going to see Stackhouse perform. Surprisingly, Ron continued to play improved defense at home. He even heard a few cheers.Then on Sunday, January 11 against the Hershey Bears, Stackhouse slammed into one of the opposing players with a solid check. The fans roared and when Stackhouse left the ice, he got what amounted to a standing ovation.&ldquo;That sure did a lot for Ron,&rdquo; Featherstone was saying recently. &ldquo;He was a pretty unhappy guy when the fans were riding him. I knew they would see Stackhouse play well and none of us on the squad gave up on Ron.&rdquo;Stackhouse puts it this way: &ldquo;Gosh, nobody likes to be booed, especially like I got it. But I&rsquo;m sure glad things are going better. And getting a little encouragement from the stands makes me want to do better every time on the ice.&rdquo; &#9632;

Inseparable Beds Stackhouse. Featherstone Win Fans Over

<div class="byline">BY BOB ELMER</div>BALTIMORE&mdash;Coach Rudy Migay&rsquo;s hustling young Baltimore Clippers prepared for their longest road swing of the current AHL season by sharpening up their heretofore impotent offense&mdash;and with a vengeance.As the second lowest scoring team in the league, and having gone through a four game &ldquo;dry spell&rdquo; with three losses and a tie featuring a somewhat anemic six goal output in those four starts, the Clippers offense suddenly came to life. With veteran winger Jim Bartlett collecting five goals, including the three goal hat trick against his former Providence mates, the local heroes exploded for 16 goals while shading Cleveland, 6-5 and routing the Reds, 10-2.The ten goals tallied in the Providence pasting represented only the fifth time in their eight year AHL history that a Baltimore Clipper team has scored ten or more goals in one game. From the first year (1962-63 season) through the fifth (1966-67) no Baltimore team ever scored ten goals in one game. In 1967-68 Baltimore beat Springfield here at home 10-2. The following campaign, Baltimore laced Quebec, 11-2 and Cleveland, 101, while thus far this winter, the Clips own a 10-1 win over Rochester on October 31 and the 10-2 triumph over the Reds.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-02318/2631585-1-eng-US/f0018-022.jpg" title="f0018-02" width="245" height="448"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jim Bartlett</figcaption></div>The cavalcade of points also has added additional spice to the local scoring title, although none of the leaders are as yet within the first twenty in the league. At this writing, Bartlett, first to reach the 25-goal plateau for Baltimore and equalling his own total goals scored output of last winter, has a one point lead over veteran Jean-Marie Cossette and rookie Ron Snell at 44 to 43. Meanwhile, Bob Rivard has shaken a recent illness and is closing in one the three pacesetters with 40 points.While it appears like both the individual and club records will not be seriously challenged by this year&rsquo;s squad, the 1969-70 aggregation is at least making the marks respectable, and as Coach Migay has often said, &ldquo;Just give me the points in the win column, and I don&rsquo;t care if we don&rsquo;t have a leading scorer within the first fifty.&rdquo;Ageless Willie Marshall who suffered another injury to his right eye (twice in two weeks) and who missed these last two games, holds Baltimore&rsquo;s all-time individual scoring mark with 89 points set in the 1966-67 campaign. With but 19 games to play, Bartlett&rsquo;s 44 points is not quite half that record. Also, Sandy McGregor&rsquo;s 44 goals of last year leaves Bartlett with 19 to register for a tie, and that adds up to a goal-a-game, which, as linemate George Swarbrick said after Bartlett&rsquo;s second hat trick performance last week, &ldquo;The way Jimmy&rsquo;s going, he could shoot out of his ears and still score.&rdquo;Immediately following the Cerebral Palsy Fund game here with Buffalo, the Clippers &ldquo;hit-the-road&rdquo; for Canada. With the Ringling Circus taking over the Baltimore Civic Center for the next two weeks, the Clips faced a five-game road trip.CLIPPER CLIPPINGS&hellip;. Willie Marshall missed two games after being accidentally cut in the game with Cleveland here. His right eyeball was scratched. Reds promoted Bob &ldquo;Battleship&rdquo; Kelly to a regular line in a personnel shakeup that saw two oldtime Providence favorites cut adrift.Kelly will play on a line with center Joe Szura and right wing Alton White. McKenney, Kachur Dropped In Player Shakeup By Reds

<div class="byline">BY HANS TANNER</div>ROCHESTER&mdash;Rochester Americans aren&rsquo;t scheduled to play an American Hockey League game Friday, March 13, but they &lsquo;d just as soon.You see, Rochester hockey clubs just aren&rsquo;t bothered by Triskaidekaphobia.No, that&rsquo;s not a foreign hockey player, it&rsquo;s the scientific name for the fear of the number 13, and TKP, as it is called, reaches epidemic proportions on Fridays the 13th.Hockey players, teams, coaches, managers, etc. are a superstitious lot by nature, and the thought of playing hockey on a Friday the 13th causes a few cringes.But since the Amerks joined the AHL back in 1956-57, they&rsquo;ve lost only one Friday the 13th game while winning nine of them!Their latest triumph on the supposedly unhappy day was last month when they pinned a a 5-4 defeat on Providence here.That was their first Friday the 13th game in more than three years.Rochester&rsquo;s lone defeat came back in March of 1964 when Providence, playing at home, took a 2-1 nodThe Amerks&rsquo; victories, other than last month&rsquo;s, came against Springfield 5-4 here in overtime in December of 1957, over Buffalo 41 here in February of 1959 and over Buffalo 3-2 here one month later, over Buffalo 4-2 here in November &lsquo;59, over Providence 65 in overtime here in January of 1961, over Springfield 4-2 here in December of 1963, over Cleveland 3-2 in Cleveland in May of 1966 and over Providence 5-2 here in January of 1957.The May 1966 game was in the Calder Cup playoffs and&hellip;yep, you guessed it. <div class="byline">BY CHUCK SANTANIELLO</div>SPRINGFIELD&mdash;The Kings have undergone another change, but it has not affected the club too much on the ice or at the box office. Right after the NHL All-Star game, new rules were setup for the expansion clubs, of which Los Angeles is one.These new clubs had to have a &ldquo;development club&rdquo; among their farm systems else pay a $1000 fine by a certain date. Springfield had to go back into development hockey again. They tried it here earlier in the season, but abandoned it. Now it&rsquo;s back for good.For the record, a development club has to have eight players aged 23 or less, and three aged 26 or less, with this reminder of the roster filled with older players. Goalers are not supposed to count. Springfield was allowed Bruce Landon, 20, in its limit.That means some new players are coming into the spotlight. And we think fans will like their play. Given a chance by hockey buffs, they will get the job done. One line has been formed with these young kids. What we have seen of them, they are coming along.Genter Brian Murphy works between wings Gary Marsh and Jean Potvin. This group of young kids can more than hold its own against tough AHL competition.Coach Jimmy Anderson likes the work of Marsh, 23, at wing. &ldquo;He stick handles well, makes those plays for the club&rdquo; Andy stated. &ldquo;He is always working hard up and down his wing position checking well and plugging all the time. The lad has good puck sense&rdquo;.Marsh came here from the Central Pro League, where he played both this season and last Te did manage to get into 7 games with the Rochester Americans last Winter. His development has been spectacular.Murphy, a giant at 6-3, 200, had to only get a chance at regular action to do well. He is a scrappy centerman who will go into the corners, work hard and check well. He played Junior A with the London, Ont. club. Last season was his first as a pro here. &#9632;

Denver, traditionally, has the bulk of games at home during the last halt of the season, and must be favored in all those.With four games to go, Denver was host to Michigan for two and had a home-and-home series with last place Colorado College, so was favored in all four. Minnesota had two at home against fifth place Wisconsin, then had to finish with two at Michigan. The Gophers needed to win three of four to clinch the title.Minnesota trailed Wisconsin 1-0 going into the last period in the first game, but freshman Mike Antonovich tied it, triggering a rally that he also concluded with a breakaway goal for a 4-1 Gopher victory. An hour later the report came in that Denver had held off Michigan tor a surprisingly close 3-2 victory.Now the Gophers had to win two of the remaining three in case Denver swept its last three, to clinch the first Minnesota title in 16 years.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0021-0267/2631945-1-eng-US/f0021-022.jpg" title="f0021-02" width="269" height="420"><figcaption class="caption-body">George Morrison</figcaption></div>But the next night, Bob Vroman from the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, stopped the Gophers 2-0 before the second largest crowd in Williams Arena history&mdash;9,167. The series had drawn a record 17,633 in the arena with a 7,200 capacity.The Gophers sat in their dressing room after that loss, crushed because they now had to go to Michigan and sweep to claim the title.An hour later, however, they got new life when they learned Michigan had stunned Denver 4-2.That result, since Denver plays fewer WCHA games than Minnesota, helped Minnesota more than a Gopher victory would have, since the title is decided on a percentage basis. So going into the final weekend. Minnesota needed only a tie in two games at Michigan to claim the title should Denver sweep its two from Colorado.MICHIGAN TECH-NORTH DAKOTA: Even though the sea son is drawing to a close, the WCHA is still mixed up. Tech throttled North Dakota 7-2 in the first game at Houghton, Mich., and led 3-2 in the third period the next night. But while Tech had a man advantage, Dakota scored to tie it and the roof fell in on Tech instead, as the Sioux swept to a 7-3 triumph. The series ended Dakota&rsquo;s season at 1213-1 in WCHA play, and the Sioux must wait through the final weekend to see if they finish below UMD, which is 10-11-1 and host to Tech. Whichever finishes lower, Duluth or Dakota, faces Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs, while the other meets Tech in one bracketMICHIGAN STATE-DULUTH: Michigan State, out of a late-season slump, tuned up for its concluding series at Wisconsin by sweeping Duluth 8-5 and 3-1. Going into the final set, Michigan State is 10-10, Wisconsin 10-10, and Michigan, which hosts Minnesota, is 10-12. Those three must go to Denver for the playoffs in the other bracket a week after the season ends.COLORADO COLLEGE: The ninth-place finisher is automatically out of the playoffs, and CC is ninth. But the Tigers may have proved Notre Dame&rsquo;s power, dropping 6-4 and 5-4 games to the new hockey Irish. All-American Bob Collyard, only a junior, was challenging George Morrison of Denver for the point title, after leading CC to its only two victories of the season. Collyard had 12 goals and 17 assists in 17 games, trailing Morrison by only three points. Morrison won the WCHA scoring title last season. Colorado finished season with a home-and-home set with Denver. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JOHN GILBERT</div>DULUTH&mdash;The University of Minnesota-Duluth hockey team, loaded with what is called the best crop of freshmen ever recruited by any college, was left in a position of trying to regroup for the playoffs when it was announced March 1 that coach Bill Selman had resigned.The announcement, issued in Duluth while UMD was dropping two games at Michigan State, said that Selman, 30, resigned Dec. 5, 1969, effective the end of the season. He kept the move secret for the good of the team.The story unfolds, however, to indicate considerable administrative pressure was applied to force Selman&rsquo;s resignation following a curious personality clash with athletic director Ralph Romano.&ldquo;I was called into the Provost&rsquo;s office on Dec. 3,&rdquo; Selman said, not without bitterness.&rdquo; (Provost Raymond) Darland told me that if I didn&rsquo;t resign, my contract was not going to be renewed for 1970 anyway, and that a resignation would look better on my record than a termination.&ldquo;I finally agreed, under the condition that it would not be released until the end of the season. I wanted to prove I could do something with this team-prove they were making a big mistake.&rdquo;Selman, who won coach of the year acclaim despite the brevity of only two seasons at North Dakota, came to UMD for the 1968-69 season, where he replaced Romano. Romano became athletic director at the same time, lonowing eight stormy years as hockey coach during which the team entered the Western Collegiate Hockey Association but enjoyed little success and considerable criticism.Teams were immediately recognizable as Selman&rsquo;s if the defensemen gambled somewhat recklessly at the opposing blue line to keep the puck in the opponents&rsquo; zone. Selman&rsquo;s wingers were forced to backcheck hastily and precisely in order to protect against expected breakaways. High schools in the area successfully adapted the style from UMD.It was a style that made North Dakota a national tournament runner-up after getting the Sioux into the NCAA tournament in both of Selman&rsquo;s years there, but it worked for only three victories with UMD&rsquo;s slim crop of talent in his first year here. The Bulldogs, however, were in every game and the exciting, wide-open style brought people to the Duluth Arena in large numbers.Tech returned to Duluth to conclude the season March 7-8, but UMD faced the games under the cloak of top-level dissension.&ldquo;I refuse to get drawn into it,&rdquo; Romano said. &ldquo;There were many problems, but I don&rsquo;t want to say why Bill resigned.&rdquo;Two days before the announcement, however, Romano had also said nothing would be announced until after the playoffs. He played a great series for us, it was only fitting that he should get the winner.&rdquo;Bob Boucher&rsquo;s St. Mary&rsquo;s squad from Halifax had made it to the finals by virtue of a 4-1 win over York University Yeomen and a 4-0 shutout over Loyola College Warriors of Montreal.Toronto vaulted into the lead at 19:39 of the first when Terry Peterman, a tourney All-Star, scored on a passout from Captain Brian St. John. Peterman got his second marker in the middle frame, cracking a 15-foot slapshot past Chuck Goddard on another passout from St. John.St. Mary&rsquo;s came back in the third period to even things up on goals by Brian O&rsquo;Bryne and Gerry Cameron, the latter coming at 15: 48 of the finale. Most of the 2,596 fans were settling back for overtime until Laurent shattered their hopes only four minutes later.There were only four minors called against each team, with none figuring in the scoring. Toronto outshot St. Mary&rsquo;s 31 to 28.In the Consolation final, Steve LatinoVich scored a hat trick to lead Toronto&rsquo;s York University to a 7-3 decision over Loyola Warriors. Dave Kosoy counted twice, while Murray Stroud and Roger Bownass got singles. Ron Riley with two and John Hutton replied for the Montrealers.Named to the tournament All-Star team were goalie Chuck Goddard of St. Mary&rsquo;s, a former Junior OHA standout with Peterborough Petes, and defencemen Brian O&rsquo;Byrne and John Murray of St. Mary&rsquo;s. The most popular Gull of them all is flying.The International Sports Arena is never a quiet place when the San Diego Gulls take the ice for a Western Hockey League game, but when No. 20 is introduced and brakes to a flashy stop at the blueline, the lid comes off.He gave his followers plenty to cheer about last season with 38 goals and 41 assists.The roof had settled back into position early this season. <div class="byline">BY JOHN WHITE</div>DENVER&mdash;The highest-scoring defenseman in the Western Hockey League this season?Nope, it&rsquo;s not John Hanna of the Seattle Totems or Denny Kearns of the Portland Buckaroos or Marc Reaume of the Vancouver Canucks.The league&rsquo;s top-scoring blueliner with a month of action remaining was Larry Mavety of the Denver Spurs.Larry Mavety? Isn&rsquo;t he the big guy (5-11,185) who draws all the penalties, some of them pretty bad ones?That was the old Mavety, who drew 148 minutes as a rookie with Vancouver two years ago and 137 minutes for Denver last season.Now Mavety still hears the whistle&mdash;94 minutes in his first 59 games&mdash;but not as frequently as before.&ldquo;Larry has come a long way,&rdquo; says Denver General Manager Rudy Pilous. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s improved his skating, doesn&rsquo;t take many bad penalties. He&rsquo;s using his head and helping us more than ever.&rdquo;And as Mavety&rsquo;s penalty-minute totals donned his scoring totals increased.-As a rookie with Vancouver in &lsquo;68, he scored two goals and added 23 assists for 25 points.With 13 games left to play in the current season, Mavety already had scored seven goals and had assisted on 38 others for 45 points&mdash;highest total for a blueliner in the Western League and almost double the output of his rookie season.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s playing position better,&rdquo; says Pilous, &ldquo;and is controlling the puck at the point. <div class="byline">BY BOB LINDLEY</div>TULSA&mdash;General manager Ray Miron was rubbing his hands in anticipation as he announced that muscular defenseman Pat Quinn had been optioned to Tulsa by the Toronto Maple Leafs.Then before big Pat could pull on a pair of skates with the Oilers he was whisked back to the NHL by the parent Leafs.It seems Quinn&rsquo;s defense mate Jim Dorey went berserk and struck a linesman and was tossed out of action with a six-game suspension. Consequently, the Leafs hustled Quinn back to Toronto much to the chagrin of Miron.Miron did have something to smile about, however. The new found offense displayed by his Oilers.&ldquo;Danny Johnson broke out of his slump and Bob Liddington&rsquo;s work is beginning to pay off in goals,&rdquo; Miron pointed out.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0024-01107/2632322-1-eng-US/f0024-012.jpg" title="f0024-01" width="272" height="447"><figcaption class="caption-body">Pat Quinn</figcaption></div>Miron believes switching Ted Hargreaves from wing to center ice really helped not only the club but Hargreaves, too.&ldquo;Ted wasn&rsquo;t happy on the wing,&rdquo; Miron said, &ldquo;but we had to play him there through most of the season. Then when Ron Ward went to Phoenix we switched him to center and he&rsquo;s back in the groove.&rdquo;Hargreaves scored six goals after the switch and had 19 for season. Liddington came out of nowhere to become Tulsa&rsquo;s second top goal sniper with 21. Johnson, second leading scorer in the CHL, had 30 goals and 36 assists.IOWA: The Stars loaded up for stretch drive, adding 10-year veteran Darryl Sly to their defense and sending Stan Fuller back to Oakland Seals. Return of Dick Redmond to action following long layoff with finger injury bolsters blue-line corps. Barry Buchanan also comes off injury list, giving Stars six defensemen. Forward group now numbers 13 with Walt McKechnie and Grant Erickson back from Minnesota. Egers, with 10 games to play in the regular season, was within reach of two Omaha records&mdash;most goals (41) and most total points (83). Knights acquired defenseman Stan Fuller from Oakland after he was returned to that club by the Iowa Stars.OKLAHOMA CITY&mdash; With a dozen games remaining in the regular season, Tom Webster seemed certain to surpass his rookie goal total of 29 garnered last year with the Blazers. Ivan had 16 goals and 37 assists (high on the club). Wiste, who scored 32 goals as a rookie with Dallas last year, picked up two goals and three assists in his first four appearances, leading Hawks to three straight victories. Coach Boddy Kromm also was impressed with the play of amateurs Moe L&rsquo;Abbe and Bill Sicin-ski, sent on three-game tryout from Greensboro of Eastern League. &ldquo;They did a heck of a job,&rdquo; Kromm said. &ldquo;I told them our style of play and they fit in just beautifully.&rdquo; Sicinski got a goal and three assists in three games. L&rsquo;Abbe had a goal and two assists.FORT WORTH&mdash; Doug Vol mar, the Michigan State grad who set an IHL record with 63 goals last season, making late bid for rookie-of-the-year honors in Central League. Hot stretch of six goals in seven-game span gave him 28 through 61 games, two less than Omaha&rsquo;s top candidate, Dennis Dupere, who had scored 30 through 62 games. Both had 19 assists. Fred Speck, despite goal-scoring slump, picked up 10 assists in seven-game span for total of 39. With his 23 goals, Speck was tied for fourth in the CHL scoring race. Wings&rsquo; 12-game home-cie winning streak broken Feb. 25 in 4-0 loss to Tulsa.KANSAS CITY- Ron Buchanan, six-year CHL veteran, climbed into third place in league scoring chase with 64 points on 21 goals, 43 assists. Larry Keenan, who scored six goals in seven games with the Blues, was recalled by parent St. Louis Blues. Andre Boudrias, sent down along with Keenan, remained at Kaycee and had 13 points (3 goals) in nine games. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY HARVEY POLLACK</div>CLINTON&mdash;If there is one club in the Eastern Hockey League that doesn&rsquo;t need help in the playoffs, it&rsquo;s the Clinton Comets. And yet this is the very team that has received a shot in the arm for the post season play.There never was a doubt that the Comets were going to capture Northern laurels and there wasn&rsquo;t much question either that they would post a better record than Southern champion. Greensboro. So what happens but Ian Anderson, an All-Star defenseman for two seasons, suddenly regained his health and was available for the playoffs.This news made the playoff rivals shudder for Anderson is the club&rsquo;s policeman. He replaced Bob Malcolm on the roster even though the latter had played well for the Comets this year but as coach Pat Kelly said, &ldquo;we certainly can use Andy&rsquo;s experience in the playoffs.&rdquo;Anderson, now 31 and in his fifth season with the Comets broke a tibia in his leg in the fifth game of the season against New Haven. It was feared that he would be lost all year for the Comets brass didn&rsquo;t figure he would be able to regain his ice legs in time to help the team.But Andy fooled everyone by working hard in his convalescent period. Eventually Kelly saw that Anderson was ready and could help the club but needed some competitive action to prep for the playoffs. That&rsquo;s when he decided to replace Malcolm who incidentally is being kept by the club since he is deemed a valuable property for the future.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0025-0331/2632513-1-eng-US/f0025-032.jpg" title="f0025-03" width="275" height="436"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ted Tucker</figcaption></div>New Haven figured it might be able to upset Clinton in the playoffs with the younger, less experienced Malcolm on hand. Now Don Perry is not so sure. Certainly Greensboro, which beat the Comets twice this year&mdash;here and down south&mdash;will find the Clinton defense much stronger with Anderson present. Anderson isn&rsquo;t much of a scorer (unlike Malcolm who had 40 points) but he is a real deterrent to enemy forwards and to enemy defensemen who might have ideas of picking on Clinton players.Kelly was confident his club could win it all before he learned of Anderson&rsquo;s availability. Now his optimism has shot even higher but he&rsquo;s not over-confident, knowing full well that anything can happen in the pressure-packed playoffs.JACKSONVILLE: Wayne Horne had hat trick in late season game with Salem. Coach Bob Sabourin called a day of a game workout when the team was rusty from idleness. Rockets blew hat trick by Denis Romanesky and a 3-0 lead to drop crucial game with Nashville. Defenseman Jim Lane missed some late season action due to some business problems in his Charlotte home.NASHVILLE: Flyers finished under .500 for first time since opening campaign here. Flyers upset that Wally Sprange didn&rsquo;t make All-star team. Don Borgeson at left wing was lone Flyer picked. Coach Lloyd Hinchberger and ref Jackie LeClair had rhubarb over a broken stick penalty that wasn&rsquo;t called against Salem. DES MOINES&mdash;While his Des Moines teammates strive to fight off the Columbus Checkers for the third and final playoff berth in the International Hockey League&rsquo;s South Division race, Cliff Pennington continues to provide the inspiration for the Leafs on the ice.The bald, former National Hockey League player, leads the Leafs in scoring and was recently named the IHL&rsquo;s player-of-the-month for February.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0026-0911/2632648-1-eng-US/f0026-092.jpg" title="f0026-09" width="265" height="460"><figcaption class="caption-body">Cliff Pennington</figcaption></div>Pennington won the monthly award by a wide margin over Toledo&rsquo;s Wayne Zuk, Don West brooke of Dayton and Muskegon ace Gary Ford.The Leafs certainly need Pennington&rsquo;s scoring production to stay ahead of the last-place Checkers, who have the advantage of having 10 games remaining to catch a playoff spot while the Leafs have eight.The Leafs are also shooting to unseat Toledo in second place, a club they trail by only four points with three games in hand.Pennington picked up 21 points in 11 games to win the IHL award. Included in that total were eight goals and 13 assists and a game-winning goal. Pennington &lsquo;s near two-points-a-game has been chiefly instrumental in Des Moines&rsquo; being able to post a 6-4-1 record during that span. The Oak Leafs have ridden Pennington&rsquo;s scoring punch to an eight-point lead over Columbus and a firm hold on third place.Pennington has been the Oak Leafs leading scorer all season and he is also the No. 6 scorer in the IHL. His 48 assists rank high in the league in that department and he is a strong candidate for the Gatschene Trophy, an award that goes to the man combining ability and sportsmanship. Pennington has just four minutes in penalty time all season.Previous player of the month winners were Hugh Harris, Muskegon; Glen Ramsay, Toledo; Paul Hoganson of Fort Wayne, Westbrooke, and Bob Perani of Flint. This is the last player of the month award for the 196970 season. The award was initiated this year by IHL Commissioner Bill Beagan. &#9632;

Looking At Hockey Races

<div class="byline">BY JACK GATECLIFF</div>PETERBOROUGH&mdash;The annual distribution of individual awards in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A League has started with the announcement that defenseman Ron Plumb or the Peterborough Petes had been selected as winner of the Max Kaminsky Memorial Trophy.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0027-0183/2632943-1-eng-US/f0027-012.jpg" title="f0027-01" width="281" height="401"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ron Plumb</figcaption></div>The trophy was presented to the Ontario Hockey Association 10 years ago by a group of St. Catharines businessmen in honor of Max Kaminsky who coached the Teepees to the Memorial Cup in the 1959-60 season and died one year later.Prior to this season the award went to the player adjudged to have best combined gentlemanly conduct with excellence of play and was similar to the Lady Byng Trophy in the National Hockey League.Because the credentials for the Kaminsky Trophy and Red Tilson Memorial Trophy were almost identical, the OHA junior A council decided to award the Kaminsky, henceforth, to the outstanding defenseman.The Tilson Trophy, donated by the Toronto Globe-Mail, will continue under the original terms and is usually awarded to the most valuable player.Now in his final third season of junior A hockey with Peterborough, Plumb, a native of Kingston, is a defensive-minded defenseman but scored 15 goals and had 29 assists during the regular schedule.He will almost certainly be one of the top draft choices during the National Hockey League meetings at Montreal in June.Six of the 10 coaches named Plumb first on their ballots while Serge Lajeunesse of Montreal Canadiens had two first place votes and two seconds, Steve Cuddie of Toronto Marlboros one first and one second, Dennis Patterson of Peterborough one first.Second place votes went to Jocelyn Guivremont of Montreal (three), Bob Stewart of Oshawa (two), Dale Tallon of Marlboros and Allen Calver of Kitchener (one each).<h2>PAST WINNERS</h2>1961&mdash;Bruce Draper, Toronto St. Michael&rsquo;s1962&mdash;Lowell MacDonald, Hamilton Red Wings1963&mdash;Paul Henderson, Hamilton Red Wings1964&mdash;Fred Stanfield, St. Catharines Hawks1965&mdash;Jim Peters, Hamilton Red Wings1966&mdash;Andre Lacroix, Peterborough Petes1967&mdash;Mickey Redmond, Peterborough Petes1968&mdash;Tom Webster, Niagara Falls Flyers1969&mdash;Rejean Houle, Montreal Canadiens1970&mdash;Ron Plumb, Peterborough Petes. &#9632;
