Drama, Excitement Grip Quebec Pee Wee Tourney

QUEBEC CITY— He is no Bernie Parent or Tony Esposito except that he, too, is a goaltender whose job is to block shots. He doesn’t stop too many, though, because almost every time the other team shoots the puck, the red light goes on. Immediately afterwards, pintr size Fran Malletroit removes a glove, tucks a bare hand under his face mask and apparently wipes away a tear or two. His teammates feel badly for him, so they skate over to the net, rub the little guy’s head and offer a few words of encouragement. The crowd, naturally, sympathizes with him. So whenever he accidentally gets his stick in front of the puck to keep even the softest of shots from entering the net, there is a thunderous ovation from nearly 17,000 fans. The…

NHL Blues Top Draft, Mike Lowe Hottest College Scoring Ace

MONTREAL— College hockey fans in Canada are wondering if the second guessers, who have been speculating whether St. Louis’ first 1969 draft choice, Mike Lowe, would make the grade or not, are still firm in their belief. Lowe, the scoring hero of Loyola College Warriors of Montreal, is currently the top producer in Canadian collegiate hockey circles with 45 goals and 30 assists in 28 games. In his final year at Loyola, the fasLskating Lowe passed the 100-goal plateau midway through the current season and in one game set a record of seven goals, six of which came in one period. The Loyola Warriors, led by the dynamic Lowe, are nreparing for the Canadian National championships to be held in the first week of March at Charlottetown, P.E.I. The Montrealers sport a 24-3-2…

Lemieux, Richardson, Ward Balk At Joining Roadrunners

PHOENIX— It would come as no surprise if the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce asked the Roadrunners to leave town. They’re giving the Valley of the Sun a bad name as a winter paradise. During the past week the Runners traded left winger Gary Marsh to the Los Angeles Kings (Springfield) organization for defenseman Jacques Lemieux, but Lemieux refused to report—at least this season—and remains at home in Quebec City. To replace Marsh, the Runners purchased Dave Richardson from the Detroit Red Wings. Richardson also refused to come to Phoenix, remaining in San Diego. At the same time, Dwight Carruthers, who had been playing defense for Seattle this season, was purchased from the Philadelphia Flyers, and another defenseman, Bill Terry, arrived from Tulsa. Roadrunners’ coach Alf Pike wasn’t sure how much help Terry would be as be…
