NHL MISSING OUT ON PENALTY SHOTS

Record 14,835 Sees BU Terriers Score Beanpot Puck Win
BOSTON— If you’re a hockey fan in the city of Boston, you’re a privileged sort. While ice buffs all over the continent can enjoy the sport both during the season and the playoffs, be it college or professional, Bostonians have exclusive rights to college hockey’s biggest yet most parochial attraction—the Beanpot Tournament. February 2 and February 9 saw a total of 29,537 fans flow through the Boston Garden turnstiles. The second night’s crowd of 14,835 was a new record for the event, and they weren’t the least bit disappointed as Boston University, Boston College, Harvard, and Northeastern University treated them to the seat-squirmingest show yet. For the uninformed, the Beanpot first round pairings alternate for the first round each year among these four Boston schools. No newcomers will ever be welcome, it’s so satisfactory…

NHL Richer By $7,350 In Fines As Three Clubs Hit For Brawling
MONTREAL— The unrestrained practice’of National Hockey League teams emptying their benches to engage in ice fighting is going to stop or else a lot of players are going to find their pocketbooks lighter at season’s end. This was the aftermath of NHL President Clarence Campbell’s latest fine-issuing spree—which netted the league $7,350—against three member clubs. Toronto, Boston and Pittsburgh. Campbell assessed fines of $1,000 against the Leafs, Bruins and Penguins for leaving their benches to join in the ice brawling. The Boston-Toronto TV game-of-the-week special on CBS Feb. 1 resulted in a general free-for-all. Campbell handed down fines totalling $4,700 of which $2,500 was to be paid by the Maple Leafs. Defensemen Rick Ley and Brian Glennie were each hit with $200 fines for leading the mass exodus of Leafs from the bench…

Gens Silence Solem Title Hopes; Roberge Scores 700th EHL Goal
SALEM— Colin Kilburn, coach of the Salem Rebels, evidently is going to have to settle for runnerup laurels in the Southern Division of the Eastern Hockey League pennant chase. Kilburn’s club had aspirations of catching front running Greensboro after a tremendous northern jaunt on which his Rebels won four of their five outings. This success lifted the Rebels within two points of Greensboro and set the stage for a 3-game series with the Gens. The hopes of the Rebels plummeted, however, when Greensboro rose to the occasion and whipped the upstart Salem skaters three straight times to widen the margin between the clubs. Now Kilburn is more or less resigned to the No. 2 spot in the regular season and has set his target for the playoff crown. Kilburn claims Greensboro has been fortunate…
