NHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

In The East It isn’t very often a rookie breaking into the National Hockey League can pick off a hat trick in his first few games. It happened this past week to Don Marcotte of the Boston Bruins to complement a hot run for the solidly-built left winger. The Bruins recalled Marcotte from Hershey of the AHL when injuries struck the club and he was so impressive that they decided to keep him up for the rest of the league campaign. Marcotte didn’t disappoint the Bruins scoring in his first game and last week he followed up with his second goal and this past week he produced four more goals giving him a total of six in seven games since his recall. The swarthy winger, who was being hailed as the best portside…

WESTERN WAY

As the Western Collegiate Hockey Association race heads into the homestretch of its wildest race in history, each series gets more critical. With series sweeps at a premium, Denver managed to snatch two games at Michigan State and projected itself into the midst of the title picture, while the double losses may have dropped Michigan State a bit out of it. Minnesota protected its league lead by splitting at Michigan Tech, while Wisconsin and Minnesota-Duluth divided at Duluth. Michigan and North Dakota had that weekend off, while Colorado College gained a 5-4 victory from improving Notre Dame in non-conference play. Bob Winograd scored twice from defense to aid Colorado College, while Paul Regan had two Notre Dame goals. Two straight strong recruiting years have put the Irish right up near WCHA caliber. MINNESOTA-MICHIGAN TECH:…

Canadiens’ Ferguson On Shelf As In furies Frustrate Habs’Star

MONTREAL— No matter what happens to the Canadiens in the Eastern Division title race and the Stanley Cup playoffs, John Ferguson can’t help but look back on 1969-70 as a long, frustrating season. After scoring 29 goals and earning 2-3 assists last term in performances that stamped him as much a scorer as a “policeman” the 31-year-old forward had anticipated his best efforts ever in seven years with the Habs. However his problems started as far back as training camp and one mishap after another has limited John to only 33 games in which his production has been reduced to 13 goals and seven assists. And the latest injury must make him wonder whether there’s any justice even for a big, bad winger. Ferguson, just starting to reach top shape again after being sidelined with…

Bears Regroup After Losing Scoring Ace

HERSHEY— It was enough to make any coach take a header off the nearest bridge. But coach Frank Mathers and his Hershey Bears were not about to hit the panic button. First a rash of injuries struck the club and then the Boston Bruins put in a permanent recall for winger Don Marcotte, who appeared a cinch bet for American League All-Star recognition this season. Marcotte’s loss was a marked blow to the Bears’ attack. The burly 22-year-old forward was pacing the team’s goal snipers with 28. He had notched four “hat tricks” and five game-winning tallies. In a two-and-a-half year stay with Hershey, Marcotte amassed 151 points on 94 goals and 57 assists in 174 games. Without question Marcotte, one of the finest two-way forwards to ever skate for Hershey, should aid the…
