NEW YORK— In the Neolethic Age of New York hockey everything came to an and in Mid January when the annual invasion of the Ice Follies made the Rangers a road show. Usually they were in fifth place about four points behind either Detroit or Boston in the Battle for the last playoff spot. When they returned, the standings would show an eight to ten point gap—and out. Things have changed and we don’t mean that the Ice Capades has replaced the Follies. New York zipped through the first five games of their six game trip with a sensational 3-1-1 record. They defeated Pittsburgh. Toronto and Minnesota, tied Philadelphia and lost to Montreal. In The East Jacques Lemaire of the Montreal Canadiens is the hottest scoring forward in the National Hockey League this sea son and if he maintains his present pace, he could hit the 50 mark with no trouble. It would be a new experience for the 24-year-old third-year performer with the Canadiens. Lemaire already has 28 goals in his first 42 games, which puts him within one of tieing his season high of 29 last season and he still has another half of the schedule to go. Lemaire popped in Nos. 27 and 28 to maintain his NHL goal scoring lead last week and one of his goals was the winner as the Habs toppled Detroit 4-1.
