Allen’s Rise To GM Recalls Day He Got His Name On Stanley Cup
PHILADELPHIA— It was a peculiar set of circumstances how Keith Allen got his name engraved on the Stanley Cup as a player and it has taken another unusual act that now has him in the big time as a general manager. When Bud Poile was dismissed as the Flyers’ GM because of what principal owner Ed Snider said were “fundamental differences between him and the owners”. Allen was elevated to the vacant position. Snider ripped up Allen’s old contract, which still had a year-and-a-half to run. and gave Keith a new contract which extended through the 1972-73 season. There naturally was a sizeable increase in salary. It was a strange development because Poile had been the person responsible for bringing Allen to the Flyers in the first place. Rookies Schick, Hughes Hot But Runners Betraying Pike; McCartan Forced To Wear Musk
PHOENIX— Coach Alf Pike had promised the Phoenix Roadrunners’ fans a contender by Christmas but the Runners have only won four, while losing nine and tying one in a four week span and the fans were starting to scream for Pike’s scalp. With five rookies in the lineup, Pike said it would take three months for the club to get moving. The rookies are developing, one with a recent scoring surge. Dennis Schick, 20, has seven goals on the season but six have been in the past four games, since he was moved to veteran Milan Marcetta’s right wing. Marcetta leads the club in goals with 16 and Frank Hughes, another 20-year-old rookie, is tops in points with 31 on 14 goals arid 17 assists. The Runners have been unable to cope with the…
