Mothers Stumped As Bears Lose Storing Touch In Worst Stump

HERSHEY— It’s been about as bad as the 1929 stock market crash for the Hershey Bears. The battom has literally been falling out for the defending Calder Cup champions who are in the throes of one of the worst slumps in club history. Since Nov. 2 when the Quebec Aces hung an 8-5 loss on Hershey, the Bears dropped eight of ten games, including four games on home ice. Coach Frank Mothers has done everything to try get the outfit back on the win track. So far, nothing has worked. He has scrambled lines, switched goalies and used everyone except the stick boy. What’s puzzling is the club’s sudden lack of firepower. The Bears launched the 1969-70 American League season with a roar, going through the first seven games with only one defeat and…

Gulls’ Len Ronson Triggers 20 Goals; Nets 8 in 3 Games

SAN DIEGO— Len Ronson doesn’t score in streaks. Bunches is a better word. The 33-year-old San Diego Gulls’ leftwinger has scored back-to-back “hat tricks” twice and has a total of 20 goals in 22 games. The first “hat” was a four-goal performance and the second time he put “hats” together, he almost made it three in a row, but had to settle for two goals. The back-to-back performance tied a Western Hockey League record. So did the eight goals in three games. Several others are in reach, including most goals in a season—57 set by Lou Jankowski for the Calgary Stampeders in 196061. But the one Ronson the Rocket should knock off is most ‘hat tricks” in a season. The record of five is shared by his teammate Fred Hilts. It’s quite a comeback from last…

Veterans Have Place On Development Club

SPRINGFIELD— Doug Robinson and Randy Miller are two veteran players with the club who have been doing well. Though the Kings are known as a development club and rely on producing new, young talent for the parent club, there is still need for the veteran hockey player on the team. Robinson shows all signs of coming back strong with Springfield. The 6-2, 200 pounder had a so-so season last winter and fans and club officials hope he does much better this time around. He has shown in recent games that his play has been improving. He began last season with the parent Kings, but spent the last few months of the year here. Etck in 1961, Doug turned pro in the Chicago organization. In Buffalo in 1962, he was named AHL Rookie of…
