<div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div>LOS ANGELES&mdash;One of the few bright spots in the first five weeks of the Los Angeles&rsquo; Kings third season has been the power play, especially as performed by Bob Wall. The little defenseman has four goals, all on powerplays.The Kings scored on 12 of their 45 powerplay opportunities in their first 13 games, which was the second-best record in the West and the fourth best in the entire NHL.St. Louis led the West and the NHL with 21 in 71 chances at that point. Boston with 17 for 66 and Detroit with 15 for 65 topped the Eastern Division.In their first two seasons, the Kings scored on only 64 out of 472 power-play chances, which figures out to be about once every seven or eight times. Currently, they are converting manpower advantage situations into scores about one out of four times, which is a very good pace, better than average by far.Ross Lons berry and Skip Krake have two power-play goals each. Right-wing Leon Rochefort, who teams with Wall on the point during power-plays, has collected eight of his team-leading nine assists on such plays. But the real hero is Wall.The 5-10, 180-pounder has really been whaling. At 27, a veteran of 11 pro campaigns, Wall has been a defenseman most of his career and broke in as a King the season before last as a defenseman, scoring only five goals all season.Last season, Red Kelly converted him to a forward and he scored only 13 goals all season. A smart player, a fine skater, but not a big hitter, Red reasoned he had the skill to stimulate the Kings up front. Bob said he didn&rsquo;t mind and did fair.This season, new coach Hal Laycoe re-converted him back to defense and he&rsquo;s scoring at a faster pace than he was up front. Bob smiles and says he doesn&rsquo;t mind where he plays. He has to say that. Laycoe has used him up front from time to time, too.The Kings came close to parting with Wall between seasons, but he&rsquo;s always been a highly-regarded prospect who somehow simply was unable to fully establish himself in the big-time, with Detroit before L.A.The Kings never before have had an effective power-play unit and it is too early to say they have one now, but thanks to Bob Wall, especially, it does look promising. It was one of the tasks to which new coach Laycoe seemed suited and is the one in which he has produced so far.Otherwise, the Kings aren&rsquo;t scoring that much. They netted only 30 goals in their first 13th games. Eddie Shack had five, Wall and Bryan Hextall four each, and Skip Krake, Ross Lonsberry and Ted Irvine three each. Irvine doesn&rsquo;t have an assist yet. Rochefort has only one goal, but nine assists. Krake has seven assists.On the other side of the powerplay stick, the Kings permitted 10 goals in 58 short-handed situations, or about one out of six. or a lot less than they, themselves, were scoring.Sadly, this isn&rsquo;t being translated into victories. After a 3-1 loss in Pittsburgh, which delighted ex-coach Kelly, and a 7-4 loss in Boston, the Kings had won three and lost ten, with seven of their nine games on this gruelling 17-night road-trip, now ending, then still to go.Perhaps it is time to adjust. We could say it&rsquo;s not winning or losing which counts, but how you play the power-play.Much-pushed-around Bobby Wall is playing it very well. Perhaps he&rsquo;ll wind up with just the four goals. You never know. But at least he has reason to smile for the moment. If he cares to smile while losing. Power Play Lone Bright Spot As Wall Finds Scoring Magic

Who is the best coach in the National Hockey League?CAM1L1O MILANO, barlender, Montreal:&ldquo;The guy I like to watch working behind the bench is Harry Sinden. I think he&rsquo;s the class guy of the NHL. Never, blows his top or gets in a tantrum like some of those guys. Anybody who can handle that wild bunch with the Bruins has got to be the best.&rdquo;MATT CZECHO, truck driver. Queen&rsquo;s. N.Y.:&ldquo;None of them. These guys pamper their players today. The best hockey ever played was in the thirties. Guys like Bun Cook and Bryan Hextall were really tough. And they fought like men, not with their&rsquo;, sticks like they do today. I guess Emile Francis is pretty? near the top now, although I? liked Punch Imlach before Toronto got rid of him. He was tough and he was thinking hockey all the way.&rdquo;RAY CORTIN, editor, Chicago:&ldquo;Scotty Bowman of St. Louis is No. 1 today. He has&rsquo; made a winner and a big, money maker out of the St. Louis club. Bowman developed youth last season to blend] in with the oldtimers that he used two years ago. He is young himself, yet was able to give orders to players like Hall and Plante who were older, than him. St. Louis is fortunate to have him.&rdquo;NAT TRAUB, publisher. Boston:&ldquo;Harry Sinden of the Boston Bruins. He took the Bruins from last place to contention in three years Eventually he will win the, Stanley Cup. This could be, the year. Boston must beat&rsquo; those Canadiens, somehow. Sinden will figure a way and then the Bruins will start a dynasty like the Boston Celtics.&rdquo;MATT FOLEY, mechanic. Lake Placid. N.Y.&ldquo;Claude Ruel of the Montreal Canadiens. He won the &lsquo;pennant and the playoffs, didn&rsquo;t he? And he did it with, a team that had to be shown who was boss. Also Jean Beliveau was hurt pari of the year. Ruel may be young but he is tops.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JOHN WHITE</div>SALT LAKE&mdash;The new Salt Lake City Golden Eagles have pulled off the coup of the early season in the Western Hockey League.The Eagles have lured Golden Guyle Fielder out of retirement.And how about that! Golden Guyle with the Golden Eagles.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-02617/2696204-1-eng-US/f0002-022.jpg" title="f0002-02" width="248" height="445"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bobby Schmautz</figcaption></div>Fielder, the all-time scoring champion of the Western League, retired at the start of the season from the Seattle Totems to operate a hotel in British Columbia.The Eagles obtained permission of Seattle to negotiate with the brilliant playmaker. And apparently the sales talk of Ray Kinasewich. Salt Lake City coach, was a dandy. Fielder agreed to terms.To get Fielder. Salt Lake City gave Seattle tough right winger Bobby Schmautz. purchased earlier by the Eagles from the Montreal Canadiens&rsquo; organization.Schmautz played last season with the Chicago Black Hawks.Kinasewich and Fielder are old friends. In fact, Kinasewich had his best seasons&mdash;44 and 42 goals&mdash;playing on a line with Fielder at Seattle.The acquisition of Fielder came at a time when the Golden Eagles desperately needed help at center because of an injury to Billy McNeill.McNeill, twice voted MVP in the Western League, suffered a broken left ankle in a clash against Phoenix.At the time of his injury, the swinging McNeill was tied for the scoring lead on the Salt Lake City club.The Eagles suffered another blow when veteran defenseman Elmer (Moose) Vasko left the same game with a cracked right ankle. The ankle was placed in a cast and he was expected to be out of action for at least three weeks.The Golden Eagles have shown no signs of standing still since their first training camp.In addition to Fielder, they obtained veteran winger Bruce Carmichael, after he was cut by the San Diego Gulls. And Carmichael responded with a hat trick in one of his early games for Salt Lake City.Both Fielder&mdash;who virtually makes a line&mdash;and Carmichael seem sure to help the Eagles, who started the season long on hustle but short on experience.The Eagles also have picked up, since the start of the campaign, defenseman Bill Speer from Boston but who played the last two seasons for Pittsburgh of the National League&rsquo;s expansion division.The Eagles, who started with a. 500 record&mdash;four victories, four defeats and four ties&mdash;in their first 12 games, could face some tough moments in November and December.But if they can hang tough until the return of both McNeill and Vasko, they could prove a contender in the stretch run in the spring.And the way Kinasewich&rsquo;s Kiddie Corps of youngsters has hustled, it&rsquo;s a safe bet that the Eagles won&rsquo;t be giving up in the face of the toughest physical setbacks dealt any Western League team in the early going this season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-03516/2696197-1-eng-US/f0002-032.jpg" title="f0002-03" width="549" height="565"><figcaption class="caption-body">GUYLE FIELDER&hellip;Can&rsquo;t Resist Playing</figcaption></div><h2>WHL Point Race</h2>LEADING SCORERS (Including games of Sat. NHL’S TOP 10 SCORERS

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div>NEW YORK&mdash;Now that one Robert Marvin Hull has bombed his way into third place in the all-time National Hockey League goal scoring list, hockey afficianados all over the United States and Canada are wondering how far Hull can go.Will Bobby, who had 472 goals to his credit prior to the opening of the 1969-70 campaign, eventually overhaul Gordie Howe, the Babe Ruth of the ice lanes? Howe, now 41 and still very much an active player, had a fantastic 732 red lights. This magic number even exceeds the Babe&rsquo;s 714 home runs. In the middle is perhaps the most famous goal scorer of them all, Maurice &ldquo;Rocket&rdquo; Richard, &lsquo;Mr. Hockey&rsquo; to French Canada. Richard, the scorer of an even half dozen sudden death overtime goals in Stanley Cup play, is second behind Howe with 544 goals.Thus, it stood at the outset of 1969-70: Howe 732, Richard 544 and Hull 472. Howe&rsquo;s scoring percentage is. 472, Richard&rsquo;s is. 556 and Howe&rsquo;s is. 576. There is no doubt that Howe wins all honors for longevity. He played two more games a year ago than did Hull, who is a mere boy of 30. Gordie suited up 76 times and Bobby only 74. Hull played for over six weeks with his jaw encased in a mask in order to protect a fracture, yet somehow he scored 58 goals, four more than the old record, which one Robert Marvin Hull also held.Statistically. Hull is the winner and if he plays until he is 39, as did the Rocket, he will almost assuredly pass even Howe&rsquo;s gaudy totals. Bobby possesses the most violent slap shot in hockey history, one which has been clocked at 120 miles per hour. He is a physical marvel. Hull stands a bull necked and heavily muscular-thighed five foot ten inches and weighs in at an even 200. When he winds up and blasts his way up ice he is the most intimidating sight ever seen on a sheet of ice. Bobby frequently scores from center ice with the sheer heaviness of his shot.&ldquo;It tore my glove right off and knocked both the puck and glove into the net,&rdquo; lamented New York goaltender Eddie Giacomin. on one traumatic occasion.Howe scores his goals with a persistency of effort and a flawless, accurate shot which he delivers either right or left handed. He disdains the slapper as does Jean Beliveau, the number four man in the goal parade with 463 prior to this year. Gordie probably does more work defensively than did Richard or than does Hull. Neither Hull nor the Rocket really considered it necessary to work at mundane duties like backchecking or forechecking Hull does kill penalties, usually by the most obvious method of simply grabbing the puck and bulling his way up ice with it.Richard said, &ldquo;Why should I back check. The other fellow is usually having a heck of a time just keeping me from scoring, so I really don&rsquo;t have to worry too much about him getting one.&rdquo;Although this may sound cocky, it is pure Richard logic. The Rocket knew he was the best and acted it. From the blueline in there has never been a goal scorer like Richard. And he fired most of his goals from a whistling backhand shot, which also eschewed the slapper. Actually, the slap shot was not part of hockey&rsquo;s offensive arsenal when Richard came up in 1942. It was perfected by Bernard Geoffrion in the late forties and early fifties.&ldquo;Richard lived only to score goals,&rdquo; recalls Don Simmons, the one-time Bruin and Maple Leaf goalie. &ldquo;When he got five on me one night in the Forum in the playoffs, he actually appeared to be on fire. His eyes shone like beacaus in the night and I never had a chance.&rdquo;Richard lovers have always claimed that Maurice was the man to get the big or clutch goal for you. His Cup playoff heroics far outshine those of Howe or Hull. Hull has logged 82 playoff games, 44 goals, 40 assists and 84 points; Howe 150 games, 65 goals, 91 assists and 156 points; Richard&rsquo;s record was 133 games, 82 goals, 44 assists and 126 points. Note, both Hull and Howe are ahead of the point per game norm of the big man, but Richard despite being in arrears of this plateau, is way, way up there with those goals. He is No. 1 in lighting the red lamp in the championship competition. Howe is not even second. That honor belongs to Jean Beliveau who has 73 tallies. Hull is seventh. with Howe third.In essence, Hull overpowers his opposition, Howe simply wears them down and apparently is a super human being who will go on forever, and Richard&rsquo;s biggest asset was his almost unbelievable desire to score.Maurice says, &ldquo;I am amazed at Howe. I had to quit at 39. I could no longer control my weight and was getting hurt too often. They actually carried me the last year I played, but Howe has stayed slim (Gordie stands six even and weighs 210). He seems to still do the job.&rdquo;The biggest plus in Gordie&rsquo;s favor is his apparent desire to continue playing, and as a forward as long as he can. Even Howe&rsquo;s office activities center around hockey and skating. He owns and operates Gordie Howe&rsquo;s Hockeyland in Detroit and with the exception of a nervous condition which causes him to blink, appears to be still able to stand the gaff.Hull, for his part averages about eight shots a contest. Last year he set a new National Hockey League record when he blazed away a fantastic 414 times. Many of his shots are longe range bombs, but just try and move him when he plants himself in front of the net.Richard, who played at five ten and 195 pounds plays in old timers games in Montreal despite having balooned to about 230 pounds. He still has the rapier shot with which he was a demon. A typical Richardian rush might end up with the Rocket stickhandling with one hand and holding off his opponent with the other.Actually, all three of these greats effectively employ this strategem, which can only be done by one who is unusally solid on his blades.Any analysis of Hull must conclude that he does not quite have the desire to play hockey that both Richard and Howe possess. Hull has talked often of retiring and has just quit holding out. Bobby did not even train with the Black Hawks this season. His probability chart does not indicate that he will reach age 40 still in unirom.HOCKEY NEWS SPECIAL! &#9632;

Migh.<h2>Lacrosse Seen As Hockey Conditioner</h2>During the past summer Doug Favell of the Philadelphia Flyers was a high-scoring forward for the St. Catharines Golden Hawks, a major league lacrosse team.At the beginning of the lacrosse season, St. Catharines also drafted Ken Hodge and Gerry Cheevers. who during the winter months play for the Boston Bruins. But Hodge and Cheevers could not play because the Bruins have a policy of not allowing their players to take part in off-season body contact sports for fear of injury.You would think the Bruins would encourage players to get involved in such a sport to keep them in shape during the long summer months.GARY GARDELL. <div class="byline">BY CHARLIE HALPIN</div>&bull; THERE WAS a time when it was suggested the Chicago Black Hawks would be the ones to set the precedent and become professional hockey&rsquo;s first all-helmeted team.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01739/2696612-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="270" height="522"></div>We can recall a night in the Montreal Forum when the Hawks startled the fans by putting eight white-helmeted figures on the ice in the pre-game warmup. Since NHL players and teams have shown a disdain for the head protectors, it was something of a spectacle that started the crowd buzzing. Even Pierre Pilote and Stan Mikita came out wearing the headgear.But somewhere along the line the Hawks lost their enthusiasm for the helmets and the result was a retrogressive step for hockey safety.Now the challenge is being taken up again and this time it could conceivably become a reality in time.The Boston Bruins are reportedly pondering making helmets mandatory not only for their NHL hirelings, but for their entire farm system as well. The recent outbreak of head injuries and ostensibly the one to their ace defenseman Ted Green, has no doubt prompted their thinking.&bull; THE ORDER to wear helmets began recently in the Boston camp when GM Milt Schmidt and coach Harry Sinden conferred and after long deliberation, made it compulsory for the Bruin defensemen to put on helmets for all practice sessions.Sinden spoke enthusiastically about the helmet experiment and a note of seriousness was detected in his remarks.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a step to guard against possible head injuries in practice. Right now it only applies to our defenseman,&rsquo;&rsquo; said Sinden. &ldquo;However, if they don&rsquo;t wear them, they will not be allowed on the ice. It they don&rsquo;t practice, then they will be subject to fines or suspensions. It&rsquo;s for their own protection,&rdquo; Sinden said somberly.The loss of Green with a serious skull fracture for the rest of the season undoubtedly moved Sinden and Schmidt to order the head pieces. Neither of the Bruins&rsquo; &lsquo;brass&rsquo; wants any recurrence of the tragedy that befell their All-Star defenseman. Green&rsquo;s injury, caused by rookie Wayne Maki&rsquo;s stick in an Ottawa exhibition game back in September, could prove the difference between the B&rsquo;s winning and losing the Stanley Cup this season. Green was at the peak of his career when the mishap occured.&bull; THE BRUINS started the move to helmets a few weeks ago when their Oklahoma City farm club in the Central League made them mandatory to become the first pro club in hockey to wear them. The Ontario Junior Hockey Association has been attempting to have legislation passed making helmets compulsory for their teams. This past week the enterprising general manager of the Dayton Gems of the International Hockey League&mdash;Lefty McFadden&mdash;announced his players would all wear the head protectors from now on.The habit could spread throughout hockey but it isn&rsquo;t likely to catch on unless the big stars wear them on a regular basis. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY GLENN REDMANN</div>TWIN CITIES&mdash;Wrer Blair has done a lot of wheeling and dealing while sitting in the general manager&rsquo;s chair for the Minnesota North Stars.The National Hockey League&rsquo;s answer to baseball&rsquo;s famed Frank (Trader) Lane has made some good deals, of course; some bad ones, too; and there are some on which the jury is still out.For the time being, we shall forget all but one, and it was a dandy.It was consumated two days after Christmas in 1967 and, at the time, was not looked upon favorably by most fans here because Blair had to give up five players to get two.The expansion club was going nowhere fast at that stage of its initial campaign in the NHL, having lost something like five or six in a row to drop to fifth place in the West Division.Since it was a lack of goals that was mainly responsible for the Stars&rsquo; slump, Blair decided that he would get rid of four forwards and defenseman Don Johns in order to obtain two forwards with better scoring potential.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-02601/2696643-1-eng-US/f0006-022.jpg" title="f0006-02" width="275" height="447"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jean Paul Parise</figcaption></div>Ted Taylor (3 goals in 31 games), Murray Hall (one goal in 17 games), Len Lunde (no goals in seven games) and Duke Harris (one goal in 22 games) were the quartet which Wren sent packing to Rochester along with Johns.In exchange, the Americans&rsquo; Joe Crozier coughed up J.P. Parise, a left winger whom Bert Olmstead deemed unready for the NHL after a brief trial with Oakland, and Milan Marcetta, a veteran centerman who&rsquo;d potted 18 goals in the AHL club&rsquo;s first 29 games that season.To make a long story short, all live of the players dealt away by Blair are either retired or still playing in the minors while Parise has become one of the West Division&rsquo;s most effective two-way forwards.Marcetta, too, is in the minors at Phoenix in the WHL. But even his staunchest detractors will admit that Milan&rsquo;s seven goals and 14 points in 14 Stanley Cup playoff games was one of the high points of Minnesota&rsquo;s first season in the NHL.And what about Parise, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound hard rock who isn&rsquo;t due to blow out 28 candles on his birthday cake until Dec. 11?He has been nothing short of sensational since arriving in Minnesota.With the 1967-68 Stars, J.P. scored 11 goals and 27 points in 43 regular season games and two goals and seven points in 14 playoff tilts.Then last season, for the first time in his seven-year pro career, the quiet, unassuming native of Smooth Rock Falls Ont., became a 20-goal man with 22 red lights and 49 points.Goals and asssists are just as meaningful to J.P. as they are to any other forward. But if you were to ask Blair to say something nice about the durable Parise, chances are it would concern Jeep&rsquo;s defensive play, or the way he goes flying into the corners after the puck.If either Wren or the fans had any doubt as to the Dec. 27, 1967 deal rating as one of the best Blair has ever made, it should&rsquo;ve been erased by the 14-gamfemark o. the current campaign.At that juncture, the Stars were 6-6-2, in second place in the West, and (you guessed it) Parise was their leading point-maker with four goals and 10 assists. &#9632;

PHILADELPHIA&mdash;Philadelphia Flyers&rsquo; general manager Bud Poile has charged St. Louis general manager-coach Scotty Bowman with having been &ldquo;99 percent responsible for the last four major brawls that I can remember in the National Hockey League.&rdquo;Poile, speaking at a press conference in Quebec City, was asked to comment on the latest brawl involving the Blues and Montreal Canadiens in St. Louis.&ldquo;Four of the major brawls that I can remember in the last two years have involved the St. Louis Blues,&rdquo; stated Poile. &ldquo;And I&rsquo;m going to ask Mr. (Clarence) Campbell (NHL president) to look into this.&ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s more than a coincidence that the St. Louis Blues have been involved in all of them.&rdquo;Two of the four incidents Poile is referring to involve the Flyers.The first occured in the third game of the quarter-final playoffs two seasons ago. In that game, Flyers&rsquo; winger Gary Dornhoefer broke his leg during a fight with Blues&rsquo; defenseman Barclay Plager in which both benches emptied.The second incident was in the fifth game of the same series when Blues&rsquo; defenseman Noel Picard knocked Flyers&rsquo; winger Claude Laforge out cold with a &ldquo;punch from behind,&rdquo; said Poile. Again both benches emptied.The third incident Poile is referring to happened during training camp this fall in a game played between the Blues and Boston in Ottawa.In that game, Boston&rsquo;s Ted Green suffered a fractured skull after being hit with a stick by Blues&rsquo;Wayne Maki.The latest melee between the Blues and Canadiens was the fourth. In that game, Blues&rsquo; defensemen Picard and Bob Plager were assessed fighting penalties against Montreal&rsquo;s John Ferguson. <div class="byline">&#x2014;By Bill Libby</div><h2>Something To Celebrate&hellip;</h2>WE WERE INTERVIEWING Ross Lonsberry, one of the new Kings, when we asked him about his marriage last summer to Juanita Osborne of Oklahoma City, where Ross played two seasons.&ldquo;It never happened,&rdquo; he said.&ldquo;But I read about it in a press release from Jon Washington, the demon publicist of the Kings, who is a stickler for accuracy,&rdquo; I protested. Surely Ross was wrong.&ldquo;No, I&rsquo;ve made no mistake. I&rsquo;m really not married,&rdquo; Ross reported. &ldquo;Not the last 1 looked, anyway. Washingon&rsquo;s error was mine. I reported it to him. I was in Oklahoma City to get married. We decided it wasn&rsquo;t the time. We changed our minds and decided to wait.&rdquo;&ldquo;I thought it had happened,&rdquo; Washington sighed, taking time out from preparing press release about the Kings winning the Stanley Cup?Preparing a magazine piece on Lonsberry, 1 asked him if he was still going with the girl and wondered it I should give her name in the story. &ldquo;Well, we&rsquo;re still something, I guess,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Maybe you better not mention her name, though.So we didn&rsquo;t, setting about writing a few paragraphs about what it was like to be a swinging bachelor. We recalled something another bachelor athlete once said: &ldquo;I&rsquo;d rather want what I didn&rsquo;t have, then have what I didn&rsquo;t want.&rdquo; We passed it on to Lonsberry. He chuckled and said he saw the wisdom in that.One week later, Ross Lonsberry and Juanita Osborne of Oklahoma City, where he played for two seasons, were married in L.A.It must have been quite a party. Norm Mackie, the Kings&rsquo; trainer, who got married last summer, really, broke his ankle. His wife is a nurse. As the teams took off on a long road trip, currently winding up, he stayed home. Al Olson, who has been helping out, took over temporarily.Looking ahead to marriage, Lonsberry began to wear a helmet in Oklahoma City. He &lsquo;s had no head injuries, but says he just found he felt better wearing one. Of course he knew Juanita even then. Maybe he didn&rsquo;t know what he wanted, but he knew Juanita. He&rsquo;s the only King with a helmet. He&rsquo;s also the only King with Juanita.Lonsberry scored 40 goals in two seasons in Oklahoma City. He recently was voted that team&rsquo;s all-time left wing. Of course, the team has not had a very long history. He scored three goals in the first 13 games for the Kings and was one of their better players in the first five weeks. Of course, the Kings have not yet had a very long and glamorous history, either. He was happy to leave Boston, where excess talent stifled his opportunities. He is big and strong and smooth and has a chance to be good.Anyway his marriage was the most pleasant thing that has happened to the Kings lately as they sunk further and further below. 500 as they struggled through their long road trip. A 7-4 shell-shocking in Boston following a 3-1 loss to old coach Red Kellym Pittsburgh gave them 10 losses in their first 13 games. It looks like a long hockey season in Los Angeles, but at least Ross has Juanita. And Norm Mackie has his broken ankle and the company of his bride, which was better than having to watch those games in Pittsburgh and Boston. Being against yelling and screaming and scratching and biting and horrible scenes, Gerry chose not to negotiate his contract with general manager Larry Regan this Fall. He sent Michelle, instead.Armed with stacks of facts and figures, among other things, she pranced in wearing a mini-skirt, sat down, crossed her legs and began to inform Mr. Regan of the worth of her man, in case he had not noticed. Both are married men. Both understand the power of women. Jack Kent Cooke, another married man, was called in. Regan pleaded that he not be compelled to face Michelle again. Gerry was grabbed and given $1,000 more than he expected.Once Regan settled on a salary with another player. The player signed, grunted and said, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t open your shirt, Mr. Regan, or your heart will fall out.That player was not smart enough to have a wife who could negotiate for him.Perhaps what the Kings need is more wives.Bryan Campbell, the last regular forward on the team who had not scored a goal, scored one in the team&rsquo;s 13th game. Handsome and a snappy dresser, &ldquo;Soupy is a bachelor.Eddie Joyal, the star forward of the team who scored two goals in the team &lsquo;s first dozen games, missed the 13th with a knee injury. Handsome and a snappy dresser, &ldquo;The Jet&rdquo; is a bachelor.Dale Hoganson, the bright rookie defenseman, also missed the 13th game with an ankle injury. An All-Canadian, Yvan Sawyer type, and a dresser, &ldquo;Buckwheat is a bachelor.These injuries positively were not suffered at Lonsberry&rsquo;s party.,And these fellows probably have not married in the last few minutes.Maybe they don&rsquo;t know what they want, as Ross Lonsberry suddenly found out he does.Anyway, Ross gave the boys something to celebrate.Although as The Big Red Rooster, John Kerr, asked with Hot Rod Hundley &lsquo;s aproval &ldquo;Do you need a reason for a party?&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JIM PROUDFOOT</div>TORONTO&mdash;Stafford Smythe and Harold Ballard are back on top in Toronto hockey.Smythe has been installed as president of the Maple Leaf Hockey Club and Ballard is the new executive vice president.These were the offices they&rsquo;d held with Maple Leaf Gardens before they were unseated at an August meeting of the board of directors. George Mara took over as president, a job he retains under the revised setup. The hockey team is operated as a Gardens&rsquo; subsidiary.Nothing has really changed a great deal. Smythe and Ballard had continued to run Leafs, although without titles&mdash;except that Smythe still represented Leafs as a governor of the National Hockey League.All this latest move accomplishes is to clarify existing arrangements. Previously, the only officer of the hockey club itself was King Clancy the vice president.But the appointments did constitute an impressive display of the power Smythe and wield. They indicated that the new arrangements were accepted only after considerable haggling among the directors. Ballard and Smythe own 40 per cent of Gardens&rsquo; shares, roughly, and stated they could count on support from another 15 per cent, giving them effective control.Theoretically, then, they could throw out the present board at a shareholders&rsquo; meeting.The announcement came after Pittsburgh Penguins came into Toronto and handed Leafs their fourth defeat in succession. After a fairly impressive start under their new leaders&mdash;general manager Jim Gregory and coach Johnny McLellan Leafs settled down into the NHL&rsquo;s Western Division basement.&ldquo;This team suffered from a lack of direction,&rdquo; Smythe explained. &ldquo;Now I&rsquo;ll be giving some, as we start to rebuild this team.&ldquo;How long will it take? Well, they used to say it took five years to rebuild a team but that was when there were only six teams in the NHL.&ldquo;Now, with expansion, who knows?&rdquo;Smythe reviewed Leafs&rsquo; present plight.&ldquo;Stapleton. Duff. Nevin, Brown. Mahovlich&mdash;you can go on and on,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;There are 36 players all playing on other teams who once belonged to us. And how many of the players we got when we let those guys go are still on our team? Four.&ldquo;Gregory and McLellan have outstanding records. But they started with a horrible mess.&rdquo;Clearly, this was a rap at Punch Imlach, the man Smythe fired last spring after a decade as Leafs&rsquo; coach and general manager &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not saying anything about Imlach,&rdquo; Smythe said. &ldquo;He &lsquo;s a newspaper columnist now, which means he gets the last word in any argument. So I&rsquo;m not starting one.&rdquo;The new president ruled out the possibility of trades&rdquo; to strengthen Leafs.&ldquo;I talked with Jim Gregory about the possibility of trades, Smythe said. &ldquo;For example, he gave me a list of 36 right wingers in pro hockey that we would trade one of our right wingers for. But there can&rsquo;t be a deal. The want too much for those right wingers.&rdquo;McLellan has decided he&rsquo;ll have to string along with the present lineup and hope it improves.&ldquo;We turned 15 kids pro this year,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Most of them are with our farm club at Tulsa. So I don&rsquo;t think we re going to help ourselves a lot by pulling somebody out of there.&ldquo;About the only thing that makes me feel at all good is that I know Tim Horton and Norm Ullman are going to play a lot better than they have so far.&rdquo;Smythe also made it very plain he intends to string along with McLellan and Gregory&mdash;under his supervision, which was never possible when Imlach was in charge.Staff Smythe is, of course, the son of Conn Smythe, who built the Gardens in 1931. Smythe, Ballard Regain Positions With Leafs; Team Rebuilding Planned

<div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>DETROIT&mdash;Alex Delvecchio always has shied from the spotlight&hellip;he doesn&rsquo;t even like to get a breakaway because then he&rsquo;s out there practically alone, all eyes focused on him.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-01706/2696846-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="266" height="488"><figcaption class="caption-body">Alex Delvecchio</figcaption></div>Rather, the Red Wing cap tain likes to stay off-stage. He doesn&rsquo;t mind a bit that linemates Gordie Howe and Frank Mahovlich get all the publicity and the superstar ratings. Alex souldn&rsquo;t have it any other way.But the graying 37-year-old Delvecchio is extremely important in the Red Wing scheme. The players themselves might not have realized just how important he is but it was hammered home when he missed three games with a badly bruised right shoulder.Detroit managed to win the first game, at home, but lost the next two decisively on the road and both the power play and the Howe line suffered because of his absence. Neither Howe nor Mahovlich picked up a point while Delvecchio was gone.In his first game back, Delvecchio smoothly set up Howe for a goal. He does it so effortlessly that many overlook or underrate his skill.&ldquo;Alex slows things down when he&rsquo;s out there.&rdquo; observed Bruce MacGregor. &ldquo;Things just go smoother.&rdquo;General manager Sid Abel put Garry Unger in Delvecchio&rsquo;s place during Alex&rsquo;s absence but Unger, who functioned beautifully between Mahovlich and Howe two seasons ago when he came to Detroit from Toronto along with Mahovlich and Pete Stemkowski, couldn&rsquo;t regain the magic touch.Unger waited too long to make his play, skating up to the blue line and trying one more fake before going over or passing to his wings. Consequently, Mahovlich and Howe constantly were thrown offside.It was hard on the club, with the big line defused and tough on Unger who&rsquo;d been coming on after a lackluster start. Garry scored in four straight games and was beginning to look like the bright young star of the final month of 1967-68 and the first half of 1968-69.Unger admitted with a sheepish smile and a little red coloring that management didn&rsquo;t care for the way he&rsquo;d been playing and told him so. And he admitted that he&rsquo;d been guilty of burning the candle at both ends.But the ebullient. 22-year-old westerner had problems with his hands which also contributed to his slow start this season. Unger suffered a glass cut between the thumb and forefinger of his left hand and had two large warts removed from his right hand and both took some time to heal.Delvecchio and Unger are back with their own lines again and the Wings are hopeful that will mean a return to team&rsquo;s pre-Delvecchio injury form.The Wings aren&rsquo;t used to playing without Alex&mdash;only Gordie Howe and Red Kelly have played more NHL games than Delvecchio who has missed only nine games in the last 12 seasons and first six weeks of this one. &#9632;

Delvecchio Back But His Absence Points Out True Value To Wings

Manager-coach Sid Abel was impressed with the goalkeeping of Roy Edwards and Roger Crozier who kept the club in each game on the scoreboard when they weren&rsquo;t in them on the ice.Abel is into a strict alternating system now, discarding the &ldquo;hot hand&rdquo; theory of going with one goalie until he loses. The goalies both like and dislike it but tend to like it more than they dislike it&hellip;this way they can plan ahead and get themselves up.At no time this season was the club worse than during the second period of a 4-2 loss in New York&hellip;the Rangers outshot the Wings 20-4 but Edwards blanked them until late in the period.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-02652/2696877-1-eng-US/f0009-022.jpg" title="f0009-02" width="265" height="415"><figcaption class="caption-body">Roy Edwards</figcaption></div>Bob Baun and Carl Brewer seem to have a friendly &ldquo;Can You Top This?&rdquo;&mdash;contest going&hellip;literally. First Baun. looking like a Scottish squire&rsquo;s grounds superintendent, very tweedy, came up with a Sherlock Holmes fore-and-after.Then Brewer set the boys roaring in Philadelphia when he went for a walk with his extremely high-crowned, narrow-brimmed cloth hat and wire-rim yellow sunglasses.Baun retaliated the first trip into New York, getting a furry Mississipi-gambler style&hellip;big, upturned brim.Baun leads, 2-1.Boston coach Harry Sinden objected to the cover of Red Wing Magazine which pictured Derek Sanderson in an oval&hellip;Sinden was told it was one of the Bruins&rsquo; official pictures&mdash;Derek has considerable hair. &ldquo;Yeah,&rdquo; answered Sinden, &ldquo;but they don&rsquo;t have all those flowers on them.&rdquo;Red Wing Magazine editor Jeff Faintuck, who favors the mod look, dressed up the cover so that it almost looked like a Beatles album. Derek probably would&rsquo;ve thought it looked groovy as they say but he was home with a sore knee. &#9632;

Abel Happy With Crozier, Edwards, Decides To Use ‘Rotating System’

<div class="byline">BY PAT CURRAN</div>MONTREAL&mdash;Eddie Redmond, a durable minor pro defenseman of the 1950&rsquo;s, wasn&rsquo;t happy two years ago while his No. 1 son wasn&rsquo;t getting much ice time with the Canadiens.&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t worry,&rdquo; Jean Beliveau told his old Quebec Aces&rsquo; teammate. &ldquo;The first season that your kid plays regularly in the NHL he will score 30 goals.&rdquo;So it looks like Mickey Redmond is going to make his father proud and a prophet out of Big Jean. He has already scored 11 goals in 18 games and has earned seven assists as the early Montreal points leader.To Beliveau, other veterans and to former coach Toe Blake, Mickey&rsquo;s surge isn&rsquo;t surprising. They recall his first appearance at training camp in 1967 when, still of junior age, he scored goals in bunches to make the regular right wingers take notice.Young Redmond has several reasons for his quick start this season while playing on a regular line.The big one, he claims, is getting acclimatized to Montreal and the big league cities.&ldquo;I guess it&rsquo;s mainly a case of the small town boy getting used to the big city,&rdquo; says the native of Kirkland Lake who grew up around the rinks of Peterborough.&ldquo;When I came to Montreal for the first time, I was lost and forever running around trying to find something to do. At the same time I didn&rsquo;t know where I was going. I wound up in Houston and then didn&rsquo;t play much while I stayed around most of the season with the Canadiens. Last year was just as bad. I was on the team, but not really, although the book says I played 65 games.&ldquo;Before coming to camp this year, I made up my mind to get serious and win a regular job&mdash;to skate like the devil and score a lot of goals.&rdquo;So what has getting acclimatized got to do with his early success?&ldquo;Well I rented a nice apartment,&rdquo; says the young bachelor. &ldquo;I fixed it up good with expensive furniture and made a nice home for myself. I&rsquo;m comfortable now and glad to stay home a couple of nights before an important game.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01725/2696908-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="535" height="1416"><figcaption class="caption-body">MICKEY REDMOND&hellip;30-Goal Year?</figcaption></div>It&rsquo;s a switch from Mick&rsquo;s first year in Montreal when he spent several months as a partner to Danny Grant living in Father Gerald McGlynn&rsquo;s rectory at St. Anthony&rsquo;s Church. Although the youngsters are not Catholic they were much at home with the hockey fan priest.Now Redmond is much at home as a regular right wing on the line with centre Henri Richard and portsider Jacques Lemaire. They have come on as the Montreal sparkplugs with 25 of the Habs&rsquo; first 69 goals.&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going well because all three of us are skaters,&rdquo; says Mickey in special tribute to the 33-year-old Richard who has been moving like a rookie. &ldquo;We know where each one should be and any time we catch a guy on the opposing line sleeping we wind up with a good scoring chance. I don&rsquo;t think our defensive record is too bad, either.&rdquo;Mickey has scored most of his goals on a bullet-high shot that gives every netminder trouble. It&rsquo;s a wrist shot that he gets away with split-second timing. But he has also earned a few by being in the right position at the right time or by sheer skating.Redmond has become acclimatized to Montreal and to a regular berth with the defending champions. He has also become acclimatized to the big money.Realizing the absence of Bobby Hull as an early competitor, he asks: &ldquo;Isn&rsquo;t there any cash award for the first half leader in goals?&rdquo;For the records and for Redmond, only the points leaders are paid off&mdash;$500 for first and $250 for second.Mickey, a moderate mod dresser with sideburns, looks at it this way:&ldquo;The game isn&rsquo;t enjoyable unless you&rsquo;re winning. Hockey is what I do for a living and I think about it. The older guys put money in my pocket when I got playoff dough the first year without doing much. Now maybe I can do the same for some of them. The more goals I score, the bigger the payoff.&rdquo; &#9632;

MONTREAL&mdash;The 1970 World Hockey championships, slated for Canada next March, find themselves wrought with controversy long before the first puck is dropped.It all began last week with a visit by International Ice Hockey Federation president Bunny Ahearne to Montreal, one of two tournament sites. Montreal plays host to the first 15 games of the competition March 12-20 before the scene shifts to Winnipeg for the conclusion of the tourney March 22-29.Ahearne brought out the fact that the disgruntled Swedes were thinking of pulling out of the tournament due to strained hockey relations with Canada.It was to be a retaliatory measure by Sweden, which was angered when the Canadian National team cancelled its exhibition tour of that country due to what the Canucks felt was &ldquo;undue criticism&rdquo; in Swedish newspapers following previous Canadian ice visits to Sweden.This situation was resolved a few days later when Canadian Amateur Hockey Association president Earl Dawson of Rivers, Man. met with Senator Helge Berglund of the Swedish delegation in Montreal. As a result of their caucus. Canada agreed to send a team to Sweden in 197071 on the proviso that the Swedes remain in the World tourney.No sooner had this hassle been patched up, than the Russians complained that the schedule drawn up by the Canadians was unfair to the Soviet Union. The Soviets were forced to play more back-to-back games than any other team, they wailed. They then threatened to withdraw from the championships.And if the Russians decided to boycott the tournament, there was no doubt Czechoslovakia (as a Soviet satellite) would be forced to follow suit. They have until Dec. 8 to decide.&ldquo;If the Soviets do withdraw, the United States will move up from Pool B,&rdquo; said Fred Page of Vancouver, who is North American president of the IIHF.According to Dawson, however, a tournament without the Russians and Czechs wouldn&rsquo;t even be worth staging: &ldquo;We&rsquo;d have to consider packing it up,&rdquo; he said.Page said that Sweden, East Germany, Canada and the United States were all in favor of the schedule as it now stands. Finland, though not represented at the meeting, approved by proxy. Only the Russians and Czechs dissented, the latter somewhat reluctantly.Canada&rsquo;s problems originally began even before last week&rsquo;s meeting when East Germany replaced the U.S. in the first division. It was believed the East Germans would encounter trouble in obtaining visas to enter Canada, but these doubts were eventually erased.More controversy flared up over the makeup of Canada&rsquo;s National team, which for this tourney was permitted the use of nine pros. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY DAN MOULTON</div>&ldquo;you like 7up 7up likes you&rdquo;CHICAGO&mdash;You&rsquo;d figure a 20-year-old in his first season of pro hockey would he perfectly happy just being part of a National Hockey League team and getting occasional chances to impress his coach.But little Gerry Pinder just doesn&rsquo;t figure&mdash;not by usual standards, at least.The 5-9, 165-pounder, who spent last season with the Canadian National team, has performed at right wing with the Black Hawks often enough this fall to have come up with four goals in 14 games. And he&rsquo;s been given occasional shots at penaltykilling.But after a recent game when he came off the bench to chip in with a goal and an assist against the New York Rangers, he cracked:&ldquo;It&rsquo;s about time I got on the ice. I was just about convinced that I was glued to the bench.&rdquo;That&rsquo;s a pretty startling remark from a player who had balked at terms last summer and wasn&rsquo;t under contract when training camp opened. The Hawks finally succeeded in bringing him into the fold late in the training session during an exhibition trip to Vancouver.He had been planning to finish his schooling and play this season for the Vancouver Western League team. But he promptly was informed that he&rsquo;d sign with the Hawks or twiddle his thumbs for the rest of the season.And Gerry isn&rsquo;t one to relish the idea of twiddling his thumbs. While most youngsters would be happy to hear the coach praise their ability to jump off the bench and turn in a top effort, Pinder is intent upon fighting that image.&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want to be known as a guy who comes off the bench,&rdquo; he insists. &ldquo;I want be known as a guy who prefers to play full-time and can do it. You can&rsquo;t stay in shape playing part-time and it&rsquo;s no good for your mental attitude, either.&rdquo;Although Gerry has never taken his case to Hawk coach Billy Reay, the boss is aware of the youngster&rsquo;s feelings.&ldquo;He hasn&rsquo;t complained to me and he&rsquo;d better not,&rdquo; said Reay. &ldquo;He&rsquo;d be wasting his time. But that remark about being glued to the bench didn&rsquo;t go over my head. Gerry&rsquo;s a great prospect, a strong skater, deceptively fast for his size, and he&rsquo;s got good hockey instincts. But he&rsquo;s only 20 and has a lot to learn.&ldquo;What he&rsquo;ll come to realize is that during a 76-game schedule, every player on the squad gets plenty of work. Some guys were down and others are taken out by injuries. He won&rsquo;t get a chance to grow rusty.&ldquo;Gerry has been getting a chance at penalty-killing lately and the truth is that he made some bad mistakes when he first started doing it. He&rsquo;s not making them now, though. He&rsquo;ll come along well but it won&rsquo;t happen overnight.&rdquo;While Pinder has been a bit noisy about his desire to play, Tony Esposito has quietly gone about giving the Hawks some of the best, most consistent goal-tending they&rsquo;ve enjoyed in several seasons. When Tony blanked his old teammates on the Canadiens for the second time this season recently, he completed a string of six games in which he&rsquo;d allowed a total of five goals.&ldquo;I can&rsquo;t recall in my six seasons here when we&rsquo;ve gotten better goalkeeping over such a long stretch.&rdquo; said Reay. &ldquo;People talk about our improved defense and I&rsquo;ll admit we were blessed when young Keith Magnuson came in and showed that he was interested strictly in keeping the other team from scoring. <div class="byline">BY SPENCE CONLEY</div>OAKLAND&mdash;The Oakland Seals are skidding in the midst of their longest winless streak in two years and you can blame it on a couple of things&mdash;erratic defense and unexpected weakness against the East Division.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-01656/2697368-1-eng-US/f0015-012.jpg" title="f0015-01" width="255" height="505"><figcaption class="caption-body">Earl Ingarfield</figcaption></div>Although they have had adequate goaltending from Gary Smith and Charlie Hodge, the Seals have yielded (by Nov. 17) a total of 57 goals against&mdash;far and away the worst in either division of the NHL.Offensively, they have produced only 29 goals, or second worst in either division.And those two statistics have been compounded by a flock of East Division opponents, most of whom have used Oakland as a springboard to advancement in the standings and mostly into first place.Last year, Coach Fred Glover&rsquo;s skaters had 14 wins and four ties and a total of 32 points in 36 games with the East. This season, they are 2-8-0. In their own division, the Seals are 2-1-2.November was a bad month for the Seals last season too. But the problems which have stalled them now are the kind which Glover may have a slightly more difficult time in straightening out. But he did it last year and got his club into a second place finish in the West.Team defense, particularly in getting the forwards to backcheck, has been the greatest area of concern.&ldquo;We just aren&rsquo;t doing the things as a unit or team that we were doing at this time last season,&rdquo; observed Bill Torrey, the Seals&rsquo; executive vice president. &ldquo;We aren&rsquo;t pulling together. We aren&rsquo;t showing that willingness to help the other guy out.&ldquo;But I think we can see some daylight. We played all right against Montreal and lost 5-0. They were just that good. But we moved well and hit for once. Against Chicago we blew a two goal lead and lost the game in the last minute 3-2. If we can steady down a little and get the wins we need in our own division we&rsquo;ll be all right. Earl Ingar-I field has really helped and he&rsquo;ll be better as his hand gets stronger. Harry Howell is almost ready to play and may see some action against Detroit and Pittsburgh. We could use him, no question about it.&rdquo;In the meantime, the Seals will keep on looking for the key which will help them crack a winless streak which is rapidly approaching the kind of un-winning they did in Year No.l of expansion. &#9632;

He was set down for three games and was ordered by NHL President Clarence Campbell to forfeit his pay after he was found guilty for elbowing a referee in a league game.The suspension came as the result of a shoving incident with referee Ron Wicks in an Oakland game against Boston Bruins at Boston Nov. 10.The suspension means that Smith missed games out Minnesota, Montreal and New York.Wicks gave Smith a game misconduct at the time with an automatic fine of $50 that accompanies such a penalty.In addition, the suspension means that Smith&rsquo;s salary for the three games he will miss is cut off and must be remitted to the league office by the club.The incident with Wicks occurred in the third period of the Boston game when the goaltender protested a goal scored from the left point by Bruins defenceman Dallas Smith.The goaltender claimed that another Boston player, forward Jim Harrison, had run interference on the goal.He said he had tried to push Harrison out of the way, hut the Boston player had hooked him in such a way that he was unable to play the point shot. &#9632;

Smith Gets Three-Game Suspension

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div>NEW YORK&mdash;A year ago, in the dim past before the Jets, Mets and New York Basketball Knickerbockers had focused Gotham&rsquo;s attention on first place, Dave Balon was a sometimes utility winger and center for Coach Bernie Geoffrion&rsquo;s Rangers. Walt Tkaczuk had recently been recalled from Buffalo when it was finally determined that Orland Kurtencbach&rsquo;s back was not going to come around and Billy Fairbairn, was pasttiming with Omaha of the Central League.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-02428/2697461-1-eng-US/f0016-022.jpg" title="f0016-02" width="241" height="450"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dave Balon</figcaption></div>Today, the Tkaczuk-Balon-Fairbairn line (they call them the &lsquo;Bulldog Line&rsquo;) is the hottest in the National Hockey League. They have an aggregate of 58 points in seventeen games, based on 23 goals and 35 assists. Tkaczuk, the sophomore center from West Germany, had notched ten goals and eleven assists for 21 points, which is production along the Jean Beliveau lines.Dennis Ball, the Rangers&rsquo; farm system factotum, unequivocably states, &ldquo;Tkaczuk is the fourth best center in the NHL.&rdquo;Since Phil Esposito of Boston probably is number one and Beliveau rates as two, the question was whether Ball was rating New York &lsquo;s Jean Ratelle as three or is counting Stan Mikita in that slot.&ldquo;Both Ratelie and Tkaczuk are better right now than Mikita,&rdquo; said Ball, in answer to our query.No matter how good a center is, he still must have wings in order to put points on the scoreboard. Tkaczuk is blessed with Balon and Fairbairn, neither of whom gave any pre-season indication that they were nearing stardom.Balon, a swift skating 31-year-old journeyman from Wakaw, Sask., is one of the few men ever to rejoin the Rangers after being traded away. Dave played with the Blueshirts of the Andy Bathgate era back in 1960-61 before being traded to Montreal in the summer of 1963 in the bis Jake Plante-Lome Worsley trade. He blossomed into stardom with the Canadiens with 24 goals in 1963-64 and 18 in 1964-65, before fading back to Houston of the Central League and utility status with Montreal. When expansion came, he was the first selection of the Minnesota North Stars, but only lit the red light 15 times for the 1967-68 Stars. Wren Blair traded him to the Rangers in the summer of 1968 for defenseman Wayne Hillman. Until February last season, Davey was New York&rsquo;s tenth forward and not very happy about it.&ldquo;I told Emile Francis that I didn&rsquo;t want to come back in 1969-70 if I wasn&rsquo;t going to play,&rdquo; reveals Davey.Francis&rsquo; answer was to put Balon with Bob Nevin on a holding line last February, soon after he took over the reins from the sickly Geoffrion.&ldquo;We usually plan a game with three lines, one for scoring, one for holding or playing even with the oppositon and one for checking the opposition&rsquo;s big guns. At the start of the season I planned on using Nevvy with Balon and Tkaczuk on the holding line, but Nevvy got hurt and I inserted Bill Fairbairn. Now I don&rsquo;t know which is our scoring line (Ratelle-Gilbert-Hadfield had been rated as the scorers), but I know it is a nice problem,&rdquo; says a grinning Francis, the Rangers General Manager-Coach.Balon credits Tkaczuk with his rise, which shows Dave with 8 goals and 12 assists for twenty points. Last season, Balon totaled 10 goals and 21 assists, so somebody must be doing something right.&ldquo;Tkaczuk is the best center I have ever played with,&rdquo; says Balon. &ldquo;And I&rsquo;ve played with guys like Henri Richard and Ralph Backstrom. He never stops skating and usually leads the play, but at the same time takes out a defenseman, stays on his feet and makes the play.&rdquo;Fairbairn, whom the Rangers thought highly of and protected as one of their 14 selections at last June&rsquo;s summer meetings, scored the winning goal in New York&rsquo;s fantastic 6-5 victory over Boston in Beantown on November 15. He notched two goals and two assists in that game as the Rangers showed Boston that they are for real in their challenge for the upper reaches of the NHL. &#9632;

Glennie is up with the Leafs and he could become a permanent fixture in time. A product of Toronto&rsquo;s Marlboros junior club, he is considered a fine prospect for the future. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY TOM MONAHAN</div>BOSTON&mdash;When they start passing out awards, trophies and records after this National Hockey League schedule, the first man in line figures to be Bobby Orr.Although he is only 21 and this is but his fourth year in the NHL, the talented Bruins defenseman already has a head start on one of the biggest trophy rooms in North American.His first year up he won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. And in each of the last two seasons he has been voted the Norris Trophy as the league&rsquo;s outstanding defenseman.In addition, last year he established a record 21 goals by a defenseman and his 43 assists gave him a record of 64 points.In fact the only record that eluded him last year was the number of assists. That went to Pat Stapleton of Chicago with 50 and of course no defenseman ever has won the scoring championship.But off his first 16 games, Orr has to be given a good chance of grabbing both titles this season.In a jockeying job with Phil Goyette of St. Louis in the early season action, Orr jumped out to a four-point lead (29-25) with a spurt of 10 points in a four-game stretch.He had four goals and 25 assists and was halfway to Staple. ton&rsquo;s record for assists.If he should continue this torrid pace he certainly will make history in the NHL.Not only has no defenseman ever won the scoring crown but only two defensemen have finished among the top 10 scorers in the last 25 years<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0017-1094/2697579-1-eng-US/f0017-102.jpg" title="f0017-10" width="248" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bobby Orr</figcaption></div>Red Kelly did it with Detroit three times. He was ninth in 1950-51 with 54 points, eighth in 1952-53 with 46 points and sixth in 1953-54 with 49 points.The other was Pierre Pilote with Chicago in 1964-65 when he finished eighth with 59 points.Of course, with expansion, it is increasingly difficult for a defenseman to crack the top 10. For example, Orr&rsquo;s record of 64 points last year placed him in a tie for 21st place.But never has a defenseman so dominated the scoring statistics as Orr.His four goals are just one short of his 16-game pace of a year ago, and his 25 assists are 12 ahead of last year&rsquo;s opening.Trying to analyze why the sandy-haired marvel has enjoyed such a fantastic start is difficult.He is not handling the puck any more than he did in the three previous seasons. He is not passing any better or getting any more breaks.Bobby himself has no explanation for it. He would just as soon not even think about it.But Bruins front office assistant Tom Johnson, a former defenseman for Montreal and the Bruins, has one thought.&ldquo;Bobby has started with a hot hand,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t see him doing anything differently. He still is just Bobby Orr.&ldquo;But he is in a hot streak, like the batter who gets nine straight hits or goes on a streak and hits in 56 straight games.It&rsquo;s possible that Orr will cool off and experience a dry spell. But no one is betting on that right how, right now. &#9632;

PITTSBURGH&mdash;If the Pittsburgh Penguins only had to contend with the teams within their own division, they&rsquo;d have a playoff spot already tucked away for the 1969-70.Unfortunately like all the expansion, teams, the Penguins must face reality and their games with the established Eastern teams are proving just as big a nightmare as they are to the other five clubs in the West.The Penguins have logged a respectable 4-4-2 record against their own division, a mark bettered by only the leading St. Louis Blues. As the result, Red Kelly&rsquo;s charges are hanging in hard to third place behind Minnesota.If Kelly could get his Penguins to rise to the occasion in the interlocking play with the East, he would have it made. The Penguins are only 1-6-1 with the establishment, a sorry plight shared by the Los Angeles Kings, who are 1-7-1 with the East.Just for the record, the West trails the East by a distant 34-1010 in 54 games and only Minnesota, who are 3-2-2 with the East, are holding their own if it&rsquo;s any consolation to Kelly and the Penguins.The Penguins made one lineup change last week. They elevated goaler Al Smith from Baltimore of the AHL and sent Joe Daley down for a stretch. <div class="byline">BY BOB ELMER</div>BALTIMORE&mdash;With a little more than a month behind them, the Baltimore Clippers are still seeking that elusive commodity known as &ldquo;consistency of performance.&rdquo;As Coach Rudy Migay aptly pointed out, &ldquo;It is difficult to understand how a club can look like two different teams on as many nights. Recently as an example we handled Cleveland 4-1 at home and then lost in Hershey the next night. 5-1 and looked just as bad that game as we had looked as good the night before.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-01423/2697693-1-eng-US/f0018-012.jpg" title="f0018-01" width="251" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bobby Rivard</figcaption></div>As a result of this in-and-out play, the Clippers have been struggling over the past month to stay in contention.,One of the answers may have come from center Bob Rivard, who recently became the outright property of the Clippers in the deal involving veteran defenseman Jim Morrison with the parent Pittsburgh Penguins.&ldquo;Right now our line is a barometer of the way our team is going,&rdquo; Rivard declared while lacing on his skates for another practice outing at the suburban Orchard rink. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got a scoring line with rookies Ron Snell and Rod Zaine working with veteran Jimmy Bartlett. And we&rsquo;ve got a checking line with Willie Marshall or rookie Rick Kessell centering for Jean-Marie Cossette and Craig Cameron, but we&rsquo;ve got to get more scoring out of our line (Rivard-Wayne Hicks and George Swarbrick).Actually the Rivard line underwent what seemed to be a minor shift, but an important one nevertheless when Bobby suggested to skipper Migay that he move Swarbrick back to his normal right side where he is more at home and team captain Hicks to the port side even though the burly veteran is a righthand shooter.However, Rivard is not completely satisfied with this arrangement and is pressing for still another switch. &ldquo;I have nothing against George (Swarbrick), but I&rsquo;d like to see Bartlett moved onto my line with Hicks.&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;We worked well together last season and having played together that long would definitely help us this season.&rdquo;However the Bartlett. Zaine and Snell combo has accounted for about three-quarters of the total Clipper offense and as long as it keeps going on that basis. Penguins recall Smith, Send Daley Down

<div class="byline">BY JOE CELDAK</div>QUEBEC CITY&mdash;Turk Broda. who was famous for his superb goaltending, is making another name for himself.His Quebec Aces have four of the top six scorers in the American Hockey League and are fighting for first place in the Eastern Division.Center Rene Drolet and right wing Simon Nolet lead the AHL in scoring with 27 points apiece. Drolet has netted 13 goals and 14 assists. Nolet. socring champion of the AHL two seasons ago, has scored 11 goals and 16 assists.In the third position is Hershey&rsquo;s Mike Nykoluk with 22 points.Rosaire Paiement. who appeared with the parent Philadelphia Flyers this season, is tied in the fourth position with Buffalo&rsquo;s Guy Trottier. Each have 19 points.In the sixth spot is Claude LaForge. who played two seasons ago with the Flyers, Don Blackburn, another ex-Flyer now with Buffalo and Terry Crisp, also of Buffalo. All three players have 18 points.Coach Broda. a Hall of Fame member, has had his club near the top of the Division since the season began.&ldquo;The veterans and kids have just been great so tar. said Broda. &ldquo;When the season began 1 knew we had the players to stay in the running. The only question was. how long would it take before the rookies would catch up? Four Aces Among Top AHL Snipers

The defending Calder Cup champions launched the month of November riding the crest of a winning wave (5-1-1) and then, suddenly tumbled into a five game losing slump.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-03282/2697870-1-eng-US/f0019-032.jpg" title="f0019-03" width="266" height="421"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gil Gilbert</figcaption></div>Coach Frank Mathers&rsquo; club had not lost that many games in a row since March 1968 when it dropped seven straight.From Nov. 2 to 12, the Bears were beaten twice by Quebec. 8-5, 5-2; Montreal. 3-2; Rochester. 5-2. and Cleveland. 31. In fact until Cleveland edged Hershey, the Barons had dropped nine straight games.&ldquo;We&rsquo;re just not sharp around the net,&rdquo; said Mathers. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been trying to make the perfect play instead of banging away on the net and hopping on the rebounds.&rdquo;Surprisingly, the Bears outshot the opposition, 170-138 in the losing streak, but was outscored, 24-12.Mathers scrambled his forward lines and even switched goalies, installing long John Henderson between the pipes in place of Andre Gill, who had turned in one of his finest getaway performances since coming to the Bears six years ago.In the midst of the nosedive, winger Gil Gilbert, the league&rsquo;s top scorer last season, pulled up lame with a knee ailment; defenseman Bob Barber went to the hospital with pneumonia, and forward Don Marcotte, the team&rsquo;s No. 1 scorer, was recalled by the parent Boston Bruins.At first it was feared Gilbert, a first all-star forward last year, would need an operation. However, extensive examinations revealed otherwise.Mathers has been unable to locate a line which can consttently produce goals, thus he&rsquo;s shuffled and re-shuffled the forwards in quest of a winning combination.&ldquo;Part of the reason for reorganizing the lines,&rsquo;&rsquo; said Mathers, &ldquo;is I want to get the forwards to start thinking about checking. Hockey is still a twoway game. You&rsquo;ve got to stop the other guy from scoring.&rdquo;In the season&rsquo;s first seven games the Bears showed a five goal per game offensive average against a 2.3 defensive mark. In the last five starts, it&rsquo;s been 2.2 for and 5.0 against, evidence Mathers&rsquo; point about checking is most accurate.&ldquo;When we can maintain a defensive average around 2.8, then we&rsquo;ll win,&rdquo; said Frank. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re the type team that can win with three or four goals. Our defensive play last season was the key to the club&rsquo;s success. And we have the same players this season.&rdquo; &#9632;

Sage Turns $18,000 Gate Over To Fund; Reds Sell Out 6 Of First 8 Home Games

<div class="byline">BY BOB BROWN</div>CLEVELAND&mdash;The Cleveland Barons have been struggling in recent weeks, but neither Coach Jack Gordon nor his club has become totally discouraged. The Barons lost nine straight games in one stretch that had Gordon shaking his head, but he kept his club working in an effort to pull the pieces back together.The biggest problem the Barons have is to get sixty consistent minutes of hockey. In practically every game, they have been in the thick of it going into the final period. However, in the third stanza, enemy goals have been coming with frightening frequency. Two games were lost in the last minute of play.&ldquo;The only way to play this game is to skate and check.&rdquo; Gordon said. &ldquo;We haven&rsquo;t been skating in the third period the way we should, and we&rsquo;ve been getting hurt because of it.&rdquo; The Barons are hurt in other ways, too. Four players are now wearing casts, two with wrist fractures and two with ankle breaks. The latest, defenseman Bob Fal-kenberg. will be lost to the club for at least a month. Falkenberg suffered an ankle fracture in a recent game at Rochester.Still. Gordon doesn&rsquo;t attribute the Barons slump to injuries alone. &ldquo;Sure, they hurt you, he added. &ldquo;I can&rsquo;t remember any club I&rsquo;ve ever been associated with to have as many serious injuries this early. But, those are things that happen. You just have to pick up and keep going.&rdquo; &bdquo;The Barons are trying to do just that. Their patched up defense has performed reasonably well. There has been considerable juggling on the backline, though, with Jim Niekamp and Falkenberg hurt. The Barons recently received help from Detroit via Ft. Worth with the arrival of Brian Gibbons, a 22-year-old second year pro. Captain Bill Needham, Jim Watson, Doug Piper and Hap Myers are the other healthy defensemen.On the attacking side, the veterans being counted on to carry much of the scoring load, have not been finding the net in large numbers. Howie Glover, Jim Mikol, Norm Beaudin and Bob Ellett scored 89 goals among them last season. Mikol (20) and Glover (24) were with the Barons. Beaudin (32) was at Buffalo. Ellett (13) played at Houston.This season, with nearly one fourth of the games played, the four have a combined total of just 12 goals. In addition. Wayne Schultz who scored 22 goals for Cleveland last year, is still mending from a wrist fracture.For the Barons to rebound in the fashion Gordon and the Cleveland fans hope they will, the scoring from the veteran wingers must pick up. Should that happen, and youngsters Ken Kelly. Renald LeClerc, Rey Comeau and John Cunniff keep up their present pace, the Barons still have an excellent chance to finish high up in the Western Division standings.Meanwhile, everyone is looking ahead. The Barons have played&rdquo; 13 of their first 19 games on the road. Thirteen of the next 17 are on home ice. Maybe the years are catching up.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not the type to sit on the bench between shifts and get my proper rest. <div class="byline">BY CHARLEY BARTON</div>BUFFALO&mdash;The Buffalo Bisons got what they needed most when defenseman Larry Hornung was returned to the AHL &lsquo;s Western Division leaders by the St. Louis Blues.The 24-year-old Hornung played a meaningful role with the Bisons a year ago, and was with Kansas City in the Central League before being reassigned.In return for Hornung, the Bisons sent defenseman Sheldon Kannegeisser to Kansas City, where he was reunited with his brother, Gordon, also a defenseman.Hornung, who narrowly missed earning a job with St. Louis this winter, is an excellent rusher and a hard hitter. He will bolster the Bisons&rsquo; blue line corps, overworked with a four-man staff in recent weeks.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m pleased and lucky to get Hornung back,&rdquo; said Fred Shero, the Buffalo coach. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a solid, two-way defenseman who proved a capable American Leaguer last season. He&rsquo;s strong and tough, and likes to play.&rdquo;The Bisons and right-winger Guy Trottier both had &ldquo;eights&rdquo; in streaks. The Bisons were unbeaten at home in eight games with six wins and two ties, and Trottier, leading the league with 15 goals, had scored in eight straight games&mdash;three under the AHL record. &#9632;

There are several clubs which plan to quarrel with their title aspirations, but all things being equal, it will be the Islanders representing the region in Memorial Cup playdowns next spring.The team has balance, and depth, the likes of which has not been present on any Maritime team in recent memory. Islanders are class in goal with Ray Gibbs. Their defence is bulwarked by 17-year-old Peter Williams, possibly the best young defenseman in Maritime junior hockey and shored&rdquo; by people like Luc Bedard. Donnie Brown. They have added muscle in tough Timmy and Timmy Steeves. They boast an outstanding array of forwards, headed by the fine combination of Angus Beck, Hilliard Graves and Dave Murnaghan. Forward Bobby McGuigan has emerged as probably the brightest professional prospect in the&mdash;league, and they keep coming up with great young prospects like Bobby McMillan, brother of the Canadian National&rsquo;s Billy, who is maybe a better player than his illustrious brother, at the same stage of development.FOOTNOTES: Dugger MacNeil. the old Montreal Royal and Halifax Atlantic rearguard, now a provincial MLA in the N.S. government, is arranging the Montreal Canadiens-Mari-time Oldtimers game scheduled to the Halifax Forum in late December. LOUIS&mdash;Mr. Goalie is back in hockey.Last week the National Hockey League&rsquo;s All-Star goalie was a fulltime farmer in Stony Plain, Alta.But Glenn Hall had a change of heart and will report to the St. Louis Blues soon for his 15th season in the NHL.The 38-year-old Hall had told Blues&rsquo; coach-general manager Scotty Bowman at the end of last season that Bowman shouldn&rsquo;t bother to protect him in the June draft. Hall said he was retiring after 14 seasons with Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis.However, Bowman protected him at the June meetings, and Blues&rsquo; fans hoped that Hall would reconsider. As Bowman and his wife, Sue, were honeymooning this summer, they stopped at the Hall farm for a chat, but no news of Hall&rsquo;s return was forthcoming.Training camp came and went, the season started, and Blues&rsquo; fans inquired about the crops in Alberta. How was the harvest, and was Hall coming south for the winter?Hall made a recent trip to St. Louis for the formal presentation of the Vezina Trophy, which he won last year with Jacques Plante for leading the league with their combined goals against average. Hall reaffirmed his intention to stay retired and he lingered in St. Louis only long enough to pay his polite respects before heading back to Stony Plain.,The outpouring of the fans&rsquo; feelings for Hall was overwhelming, and Hall admits that their show of support was a factor in changing his mind. Numerous signs were hung in the St. Louis Arena to say, &ldquo;Welcome Home, Mr. Goalie,&rdquo; and &ldquo;Come Back, Glenn.&rdquo; A few minutes before the game Hall strode down an aisle to get to the ice for the presentation. Fans jumped out of their seats and grabbed his hand and made their own personal appeals for his return. Hall listened politely and looked away from their faces only when the Blues skated on to the ice to their traditional standins ovation. In the brief ceremony Brian O&rsquo;Neill, director of administration for the NHL, introduced Hall and Plante. The deafening cheers were quickly replaced by the chant of &ldquo;We Want Hall,&rdquo; and the chant grew cuder. Hall smiled boyishly and waved but said nothing into the microphone and walked off the ice.Hall returned to his farm in Alberta and began to reconsider his decision to retire. He signed a two-year contract with the Blues for an estimated $115,000.He said, &ldquo;I had definitely decided before coming to visit St. Louis that I would not play. I had purchased many new pieces of equipment for the farm, a power toboggan as well, and had my mind made up.&rdquo;&ldquo;But,&rdquo; Hall said, &ldquo;the tremendous reception of the St. Louis fans, the genuine warmness of my teammates and the sincerity of the St. Louis management and ownership made it impossible for me to refuse.&rdquo;And so, the Blues once again have the top tandem of goalies in the NHL and perhaps the two greatest individual goalies who ever played together on one team.Last year, their first season together, Hall won the Vezina Trophy for the third time, and Plante won it for the seventh time. Hall had a goals-against average of 2.17, his lowest since the 2.11 of his rookie year with the Detroit Red Wings in 195556, when he won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Plante had a goals-against average of 1.96. Hall had eight shutouts, Plante had five, and the two tied an NHL record for shutouts in a season. Hall was picked to the All-Star team for the seventh time and became the first Western Division player to be picked to the first team. He played in the All-Star game for the 13th time.On his trip to St. Louis for the trophy presentation Hall was examined by the Blues&rsquo; team physician. Dr. J.G. Probstein.Probstein pronounced Hall in fit condition and said that the veteran player &ldquo;has the body and lexes of a person many years his junior.&rdquo;Hall&rsquo;s problems with playing hockey have never been physical. Rather he had disliked the pressure and the the strain on a goalie, and this problem has really been his only complaint about hockey. He once said that he liked everything about hockey but the games.Hall&rsquo;s eventual goal is a life without pressure. He believes he can some day have that life on his farm. Although farming in Western Canada is currently-depressed. and Hall&rsquo;s own barleycrop was lost this year, he still has plans for his future retirement from hockey to be spent on the farm.But that life will not come this hockey season. This season Mr. Goalie will worry about stopping pucks.The fans in St. Louis missed him for the brief time he was gone. They&rsquo;re glad to have him back. &#9632;

Blues Talk Hall Into Playing Again With Two-Year Contract At $115,000

Jack McCartan reduced his goals against average to a league leading 2.41.The Gulls took a 2-0 edge in their personal rivalry this season with an earlier 3-1 victory over the Buckaroos in Portland. Over the four seasons since the Gulls joined the league, the Bucks hold a 22-18-2 regular season edge but in the last two seasons only one game has been the difference.A single goal has also been the difference in two Lester Patrick Cup series that both went the full seven games.The San Diego victory over the Bucks not only ended a sevengame Portland unbeaten string, which included six victories, but was a successful debut in the Gulls&rsquo; nets for Gary Edwards. The 22-year-old netminder on loan from the St. Louis Blues, blocked 36 shots.Defenseman Irv Spencer is out of the lineup with a fractured bone in his foot after blocking a shot. VANCOUVER&mdash;The Fox has disappeared from the Western Hockey League ice lanes.Phil Maloney, 42. has been appointed the Vancouver Canucks western Canadian scout by general managercoach Joe Crozier. The move came shortly after the addition of centre Cleland (Keke). Mortson to the Canucks&rsquo; roster. He was purchased outright from the Baltimore Clippers of the American Hockey League.Crozier pointed out that Maloney, who spent 14 seasons as a Canuck, will scout B.C. junior leagues as well as those on the Prairies. &ldquo;Phil&rsquo;s a smart guy, and a gentleman, Crozier said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m certain he&rsquo;ll do a good job for us. When we go into the NHL we&rsquo;ve got to start developing our own players. <div class="byline">BY BOB LINDLEY</div>KANSAS CITY&mdash;The Blues broke out of an offensive slump with a bang as the club&rsquo;s experience began to make its presence felt.Limping along at a 2.5 goals-per-game average through their first eight games, the Kaycee skaters began finding the range in a game at Tulsa where they scored three times in the first period and then came from behind in the closing minutes to earn a 4-4 tie.It was an indication of things to come, apparently, since a few nights later the Blues fell behind 3-0 in the first period to the Wings at Fort Worth and then erupted for nine goals&mdash;five in a wild last period&mdash;to romp to a 9-6 victory.They tallied four goals again in their next game, but the defense faltered and Dallas skated off with a 6-4 triumph on Blues&rsquo; ice.Then they machine-gunned the Oklahoma City Blazers for seven goals in less than two periods en route to a 7-4 win on Blazer ice, giving them 24 goals in the span of four games, 20 of them in three tilts on enemy battlefields.Czechoslovakian rookie Jaroslav Jirik provided the spark with the three-goal hat trick in the game at Fort Worth, ending a scoring slump for the 30-year-old skater who apparently was having trouble adjusting to the narrower American rinks and the increased body checking employed in the pro game.&ldquo;It was only a matter of time before &ldquo;Yaro&rdquo; got adjusted,&rdquo; said Blues coach Fred Hucul. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s got the ability to make it in the pro ranks, but the small ice surfaces seemed to hinder him. He should come along fast once he does get adjusted.&rdquo;But one man doesn&rsquo;t make an offense, and it was the balanced attack that propelled the Blues to such heady heights. During the slump the Knights managed only eight goals for a 1.6 per game average and Milford was wondering what had happened to his slick operating offense led by veterans Jack Egers and Don Luce. But the club bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Blazers at Oklahoma City and then trounced Dallas 64 at Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum. Bert Wilson, injured in a Nov. 9 game at Fort Worth when he hit his head on the ice, was still sidelined.FORT WORTH-Alan Kar lander continued to lead the Wings in scoring with nine goals and nine assists through sixteen games, but was being challenged by second-year pro Fred Speck, who hiked his marks to eight goals and six assists with a three-game scoring spurt. Veteran Hank Monteith returned to the Wings from Detroit after a long absence and immediately made his presence felt with five points (two goals, three assists) in his first three games. Four players showed up wearing helmets for the first time following an unfortunate incident in a Nov. 9 game at Fort Worth in which Omaha&rsquo;s Bert Wilson suffered a severe head injury from a fall on the ice.TULSA&mdash;Balanced scoring and exceptional netminding by veteran Serge Aubry led the Oilers on a hot streak and into the thick of the CHL flag chase. The Oilers, from Nov. 2 to Nov. 15, lost only one of seven outings and challenged for the league lead. Aubry, got his first shutout of the season by blanking Oklahoma City 5-0 on Nov. 9. Cal Swenson returned to starting lineup and responded with a goal and two assists in 5-1 win over Iowa. They know a good thing when they see one and that&rsquo;s how come they leaped at the opportunity to avail themselves of the services of goalie Dave Hainsworth of the New Haven Blades.Thus when Roger Wilson, Charlotte&rsquo;s regular netminder, was sidelined with a knee injury, the Checkers looked around for a goalie to borrow in the emergency. To their good fortune, New Haven was off for several nights, and Hainsworth, the top goalie in the league in average, agreed to don the pads for the Checkers. The result? Charlotte&rsquo;s losing ways were halted.Charlotte fans were amazed at Dave&rsquo;s quick reflexes as they viewed some of the best goaling seen here recently. He didn&rsquo;t even have the benefit of his own equipment for two thirds of the game since his gear was waylaid on the flight and didn&rsquo;t arrive until the third period.&ldquo;I really didn&rsquo;t know what to expect, &ldquo;Dave said after the game. &ldquo;I never had filled in for another club before and I felt kind of funny. I would have felt a lot better with my own equipment.&rdquo;He did great though in posting a 4-2 win over Johnstown and also coming up with 33 saves, many on the spectacular side. But this performance was just a continuation of his great play at New Haven where he&rsquo;s been a key reason for New Haven&rsquo;s lofty status. Strangely enough a shutout kept eluding him despite his No. 1 average although he had four one-goal games to his credit.Blades&rsquo; skipper, Don Perry says &ldquo;Dave has improved this year and is playing consistently good. He&rsquo;ll get his shutouts. He needn&rsquo;t worry. He has a year behind him now and he looks real sharp.&rdquo;Dave, just 21, credits Perry with helping him improve. &ldquo;I just didn&rsquo;t have the right attitude last year. Perry told me to be more aggressive and to concentrate on the game. It is hardly necessary to employ the word &ldquo;young&rdquo; in describing a General, since they virtually all come under that category.Abel, however, is something special, according to his Flint boosters. He attracted early attention by coming up with a four-goal game in the Generals&rsquo; first home appearance and following up later with another hat trick. So he already had one more hat trick that he was able to accumulate in all his past career, which isn&rsquo;t a long one, since he is but 21 years of age.There is quite a story behind Abel&rsquo;s coming to Flint. Muskegon could have had him, since he was a reject from the Montreal Canadiens&rsquo; camp and the Mohawks had first chance. But they turned him down and he was faced with the prospect of going home to Weyburn, Sask. Most of the 55,000 amateur players registered with the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States have faced off once again to start the 1969-70 season. Ice Hockey has been called the greatest spectator sport in the world, but it is also one of the greatest participant sports ever invented.Tom Lockhart. the patriarch of the AHAUS was reelected President for the thirty second time this past summer. By a coincidence this is the thirty second year that the AHAUS has been in existence. It was organized, in the main by Lockhart, on October 29. 1937 and has been the focal point of the development of the amateur ice sport on the. southern side of the border ever since.Other officers of the AHAUS for 1969-70 include Donald M. Clark, the first vice-president, Wm. Thayer Tutt, the second vice-president, Edward W. Stanley, the third vice-president and P. E. M. Thompson, the secret ary-treasurer.Clark is well known for his countless years of devotion to the cause of amateur hockey. CATHARINES&mdash;One of the most critical situations in the history of the highly-successful Ontario Hockey Association junior A league developed over the release of defenseman Glen Irwin to St. Catharines.Irwin played the first part of last season with Edmonton of the rebel Canadian Hockey Association, then transferred to Sorel of the Quebec Junior Hockey League with the understanding that he would become the property of St. Catharines for the 196970 season.The Sorel club changed management during the off-season, refused to honor the agreement to relase Irwin but the St. Catharines team successfully appealed the case to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.That was only the start of Irwin&rsquo;s problems.The majority of the junior A council, made up of the league&rsquo;s franchise oweners, claimed that an agreement had been reached last season barring players from the western division of the &ldquo;outlaw&rdquo; Canadian Hockey Association from playing with Ontario teams.St. Catharines president Fred Muller replied that if such an agreement had been agreed upon, it was binding for only the 1968-69 season and not 1969-70.The nine teams other than St. Catharines felt so strongly about the situation that they threatened to form a new league which would exclude the Black Hawks.However, Irwin did play against Toronto Marlboros twice, then suffered an ankle injury and did not dress for the third game against Kitchener Rangers.The controversy which had gone on for more than two months, took on a new twist when the Hawks traded Irwin to Peterborough Petes. St. Catharines&rsquo; team secretary Ken Campbell announced that Irwin had been swapped to the Petes in return for Bill Ellis, a center and negotiation rights to defenseman Pete Cunningham.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0027-1510/2698738-1-eng-US/f0027-152.jpg" title="f0027-15" width="261" height="465"><figcaption class="caption-body">Fred Muller</figcaption></div> &#9632;
