A Team With Swinging Doors SID ABEL CAME in to town looking very thin and worn and tired. His Detroit Red Wings had fired Bill Gadsby as coach, and Abel, the manager, had reassumed the coaching reins, for a while, at least. Everywhere Sid had gone since, all he’s been asked is why Gadsby had been fired. The fans were furious, the writers were critical and many of the players were bitter. It wouldn’t have been so bad if Gadsby had been removed after failing to make the playoffs last season, but the Wings waited all summer, let Bill take the team through training, then when he had won his first two games of the regular season sacked him. “I must admit our timing was terrible,” Abel sighed, sitting on a…
Blues’ New Hot Line Formed Late But It’s Early NHL Sensation
ST. LOUIS — The forward line which has been the most productive in the National Hockey League so far this season was put together in the final exhibition game four days before the season began. Phil Goyette, Ab McDonald and Ron Anderson outscored all other lines in the first few weeks of the season and have helped boost the Blues to the top of the Western Division. Even though Goyette missed two games with a hip injury, the trio had accounted for 22 points in the first seven games. Goyette and McDonald were together on the Montreal teams of 1958-59 and 1959-60, and apparently their rapport of those days has not evaporated. As McDonald says, “I have an idea where Phil’s going to be”. But McDonald was sold to the Chicago Black Hawks in 1960, and…
