<div class="byline">BY JOHN TRAVERS</div>HERSHEY &mdash;It&rsquo;s been quite a spell since lit-tie Andre Gill has been in the headlines. But the Hershey goaltender is reaping the ink these days with his stellar play.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-04258/2811499-1-eng-US/f0019-042.jpg" title="f0019-04" width="250" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Don Marcotte</figcaption></div>The 27-year-old Sorel, Que., product is off to his finest start since the 1966-67 season when he came out of nowhere to win the Hap Holmes Memorial Trophy as the American League&rsquo;s top goalie.That season Gill was pegged as the back-up man for Claude Dufour. However, Dufour suffered an eye injury, the ailment eventually ending a brilliant career. In stepped Gill and in Cinderella fashion, he backstopped the Bears to the Eastern Division championship.Once again this season it appeared that Gill would be relegated to a relief role behind big John Henderson, who turned in a great campaign in 1968-69 to aid Hershey to the Calder Cup title. Henderson, however, suffered a back injury. On came Gill.In his first half-dozen starts, the 5-7, 155-pound cage cop has won four, tied one and lost one. In the 360 minutes of action, he has allowed only 16 goals on 199 shots. He missed four shutouts by the margin of a goal.&ldquo;I made up my mind when I came to training camp this year I was going to play,&rdquo; said Gill, who worked in the construction field in the off-season to keep in shape.Gill claims the worst part of the game for him is &ldquo;the first five minutes.&rdquo;&ldquo;Until you make the first couple of saves you&rsquo;re not in the game. If you get beat early it hurts your confidence.&rdquo;When Gill was in grade school he played center and it was only by accident he became a goalie.&ldquo;The kid who played goal was hurt so I volunteered to play the nets,&rdquo; said Gill, who has tried to pattern his style of play after a couple of NHL greats, Glenn Hall and Terry Sawchuck.Gill, like most goalies, is of an opinion that no goalie can play the entire season.&ldquo;The pressure is tough. The game has speeded up and it&rsquo;s best to alternate the goalies if possible.&rdquo;With Gill holding a hot hand, the Bears opened a short five game road swing Oct. 31, winning the first two starts by edging Cleveland, 6-4, and then shelling Springfield, 7-1.Pacing the Bears offensive attack is Don Marcotte, the burly, hard-hitting rightwinger, who has rapped in seven goals in a half-dozen games, including a three goal &ldquo;Hat Trick&rdquo; against Springfield.The 22-year-old Marcotte, rated by many as one of the greatest forwards to play for Hershey, now boasts a three-year AHL career goal total of 73 goals in 146 games, an incredible average of a goal every other game.Hershey, which had a short four-game home stand in Oct. at the 7200-seat Sports Arena, pulled in 18,119 fans, 1,000 ahead of last season. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY ED CONRAD</div>PHILADELPHIAVic Stasiuk&rsquo;s first visit to St. uouis Arena as coach of the &ldquo;lyers was a complete disaster nit, if you can believe the rookie ikipper, it won&rsquo;t happen again.That&rsquo;s because Stasiuk saw first hand how the Blues bully an opponent in their own rink, while watching the Flyers drop an 8-0 decision in their first game of the season in St. Louis<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-06171/2809720-1-eng-US/f0002-062.jpg" title="f0002-06" width="249" height="425"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bob Plager</figcaption></div>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no doubt about it, they inumiaare you in this rink,&rdquo; said Stasiuk. &ldquo;I had heard a lot about this place and now I believe it. The Blues have everyone in the place working for them &mdash; the organist, the policemen, the ushers and even the gatekeeper in the penalty box. He&rsquo;s the guy who turned the whole game around.&rdquo;It may sound a little naive to blame the gatekeeper in an 8-0 drubbing but Vic maintains that the Flyers were playing well in the first period until the gatekeeper failed to let Wayne Hillman out of the penalty box at the exact second. Delayed momentarily, Hillman wasn&rsquo;t able to get back in position in time to prevent Red Berenson from bombing away a 30-footer past Bernie Parent.&ldquo;Up to that point, we had outplayed them,&rdquo; reasoned Stasiuk. &ldquo;They couldn&rsquo;t even get out of their own end. They had two extra men for a long time (89 seconds) and we had just killed the time when Berenson scored.&ldquo;Once they get ahead, they&rsquo;re awfully tough. It was all downhill after that.&rdquo;Even one goal apparently is enough when the Blues have veteran Jacques Plante in the net. He has now allowed only one goal in his last five appearances against the Flyers &mdash; that coming by Garry Peters during a penalty in last year&rsquo;s Stanley Cup playoff game. Plante and Parent had been involved in a scoreless tie in the first meeting between the two teams in Philadelphia.Against Plante, the Flyers&rsquo; offense is virtually non-existent. For some reason, it manages only a handful of decent shots a game, and Jake the Snake handles those with ease.The Flyers&rsquo; &ldquo;French Line,&rdquo; for example, has scored only one goal against St. Louis in the past 14 games since last season, including the four consecutive three-goal losses in the Stanley Cup quarterfinals. It may be that the Blues&rsquo; rugged play is seriously affecting the play of Andre Lacroix, Jean-Guy Gendron and Dick Sarrazin, who ranked one-two-three in Flyers&rsquo; scoring last season.Stasiuk didn&rsquo;t admit it, but there&rsquo;s no doubt that he believes the Blues&rsquo; rugged play has the &ldquo;French Line&rdquo; &mdash; and the other forward units &mdash; playing an unorthodox brand of hockey.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s all part of the scheme to get the visiting team intimidated so it won&rsquo;t play its regular game,&rdquo; he said. Such intimidation, Stasiuk feels, is dealt by defensemen Bob and Barclay Plager, and Noel Picard. In addition, Vic feels Plante&rsquo;s famous gesture (raising two hands toward heaven after a victory) has a demoralizing effect on the opposition.In fact, Stasiuk was so annoyed by it all after the 8-0 shutout that he nearly got into a fist fight with Bob Plager after the 80 game.Vic had been en route to the dressing room when Barclay Plager supposedly sneered at him. Stasiuk, in turn, called Barclay &ldquo;a minor leaguer.&rdquo; Then brother Bob skated over and challenged the Flyers&rsquo; coach to a fight.&ldquo;You guys make a big show when you win,&rdquo; growled Stasiuk. &ldquo;What do you do when you lose? Hide?&rdquo;The linesmen prevented the incident from turning into a real ruckus.&ldquo;That Bob Plager must be tough. Everybody&rsquo;s afraid of him,&rdquo; said Stasiuk later. &ldquo;Maybe it would be the last thing I&rsquo;d do in hockey; but I&rsquo;d throw ONE punch at him.&rdquo; &#9632;

Stasiuk Takes Swipe At Blues’ Tact its, Claims Even The Cateman Intimidates You

TORONTO &mdash;If anything, Mike Walton has learned not to get &lsquo;pushy&rsquo; with referees in the future.The Toronto Maple Leafs&rsquo; centre was censured with a three-game suspension by the National Hockey League for allegedly shoving referee Tom Smith during a Leafs&rsquo; encounter with the Oakland Seals Nov. 4 on the Coast.During Walton&rsquo;s absence, the Leafs&rsquo; were not exactly overpowering against their opponents. With Bob Pulford filling in at centre on the line with Jim McKenny and Brit Selby, Toronto dropped all three outings: 6-2 to Los Angeles Kings.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-0799/2809751-1-eng-US/f0002-072.jpg" title="f0002-07" width="516" height="1280"><figcaption class="caption-body">MIKE WALTON&hellip;Didn&rsquo;t Help Leafs</figcaption></div>6-3 to Montreal Canadiens and 9-(to Chicago Black Hawks.Walton&rsquo;s enforced stay away from the rink during those three lopsided defeats may have little or no bearing on the team&rsquo;s collapse that saw the Leafs&rsquo; defence riddled for 21 goals in three games. However, his suspension did reduce Toronto&rsquo;s attack to little more than a popgun offense.In the Oakland game. Smith ejected Walton after the speedy Leafs&rsquo; star pushed the referee twice, once with the official&rsquo;s back turned. Prior to this infraction, Walton had been caught by Smith in the act of swinging his stick with one hand over the head of Seals&rsquo; Doug Roberts.Walton&rsquo;s side of the story is that he was merely pushing Smith in order to get the referee&rsquo;s attention. He (Walton) wanted to question the fact that Roberts had not been assessed a penalty as well, for an undetected breach of the rules.NHL president Clarence Campbell, in announcing Walton&rsquo;s suspension, emphasized that any future such incidents would warrant severe punishment from the league. &ldquo;We will deal severely with such offenders,&rdquo; said Campbell.Campbell made a similar statement last year when Boston Bruins&rsquo; Phil Esposito was also suspended for three games for pushing a referee.Toronto&rsquo;s neophyte general manager, Jim Gregory, meanwhile, sloughed off the Walton episode as being an over&mdash;exaggeration by the newspapers:&ldquo;They blew the incident all out of proportion,&rdquo; insisted Gregory. &#9632;

Campbell Slaps Walton With 3-Game Suspension

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div>BOSTON &mdash;The reports coming out of the Boston Bruins&rsquo; training camp were ominous. Bobby Orr&rsquo;s knee was hurting again, Derek Sanderson&rsquo;s knee was also hurting which was new news. Ken Hodge had to undergo an emergency appendectomy and Ted Green was through for the year, with brain damage as a result of his stick swinging embroglio with Wayne Maki.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01674/2809789-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg" title="f0003-01" width="261" height="465"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jim Lorentz</figcaption></div>Obviously, the Beantown as cendency to tne tnrone room oi the National Hockey League was being derailed. Oh yeah, take another look. After the first four games of the new season the damaged Bostons&rsquo; had won three and tied one. After 12 they were one point out of first place. Just think what they could have done with a full squad.Most NHL experts classify the Bruins and Montreal as the two truly solid teams in the loop. Montreal, however, seems to depend an awful lot on the leadership and the ice generalship of Jean Beliveau. Big Jean is 38 and has had some physical and emotional problems this Fall. Ergo, this means that Boston could move up, even this season.Let us take a detailed look at what the Cape Cod sextet has going for it, in this attempted rise from a last place finish in 1966-67 to the ultimate in 196970.They have Bobby Orr, the non pared defenseman, who controls a game better than anyone else in the league today. They have Phil Esposito, the super point man of 1968-69, who is proving that last season was no fluke. And they have muscle, which seemingly has not been physched by the Green incident.Boston&rsquo;s big plus, thus, is threefold. They have two big stars in Orr and Esposito, which is at least one more than anyone else possesses. The third plus is the in depth all over muscle of the entire Boston squad. Montreal has it&rsquo;s policemen in John Ferguson and Ted Harris, but if they ever got hurt, look out.In analyzing the present Boston squad one notes that the goalies are good, but not all-star material. They are Ed Johnston, the veteran and Gerry Cheevers, the young veteran. Cheevers is the regular and does an adequate job. Despite occasional carping at the Boston goalers they allowed only 221 goals last season which was tied for fourth in the East. Remember this was done with a club which was going gung on attack atall times and notched a fantastic 303 goals. If Cheevers can cut this total down to about 200, the B&rsquo;s are in business.The Bruin defense is also a bit of an enigma. It has absorbed the loss of Green, in stride, just as it rode out the loss of the young rookie, Joe Watson, in the original expansion draft three years ago. The Orr led group of Rick Smith, Dallas Smith, Gary Doak and Don Awrey is better than it looks on paper. All are young and improving.Now we come to the Boston forward wall which is the key to their real strength. Boston&rsquo;s second line of center Fred Stanfield, right wing John McKenzie and left wing John Bucyk is better than most first lines in the league. And Stanfield is still a youth just coming into his own. He is 25 and his point total of 54 points on 25 goals and 29 assists would excite people on most teams, but not really on Boston. Bi cyk is 34, has a bad back but is still pretty good. McKenzie is still a young 32. He proved that his 66 points of 1967-68 was not a mirage when he came through with 56 last term. The line has the proper balance of youth and experience. McKenzie and Bucyk still have stamina and can go get the puck in the corner. Stanfield is a big strong guy at 5 feet 10 and 180 which is bigger and more rugged than most centers.Even the Boston third line is the envy of most although it is hurting at the moment. Mod man Derek Sanderson is at center, with Ron Murphy and Eddie Westfall on the wings. This is a checking line which also scores. Sanderson at 23 has it all in front of him. He is temporarily shelved with a knee injury, but he could become as big in Boston as Esposito and he has charisma oozing from every pore.When you discuss the Boston first line, superlatives are not enough. Phil Esposito has shown Billy Reay and Tommy Ivan of the Chicago Black Hawks that it was not Bobby Hull who was carrying Espo; Perhaps the Hawks who traded Phil to Boston in the summer of 1967, would like to trade Hull for Espo. I doubt if Schmidt would consider this even now.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-02556/2809782-1-eng-US/f0003-022.jpg" title="f0003-02" width="1765" height="1321"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ace scorer Phil Esposito Is Boston Coach Harry Sinden&rsquo;s Offensive Leader. He Is The &lsquo;Rocket&rsquo; Of The Bruins.</figcaption></div>Esposito is the coming super player of the NHL. He is a young 27 and like all the other Bruin forwards is big at six one and 195. While he probably will not get 126 points again this season he should be good for about 100 and his right wing Ken Hodge hopes to get the same 90 he notched last year on 45 goals and a like number of assists.&ldquo;Hodge showed what he was made of by bouncing back so rapidly from his appendicits. He could have taken it easy for a month or so, but he was right in there,&rdquo; noted Sinden.Hodge, also obtained from Chicago along with Espo and Stanfield, is a rugged 25 year old who stands six one and weighs 200 &hellip; If this has become boring or repetitious, we apologize, but most of the Bruins are just that big and that good. The first line&rsquo;s sometimes wing on the right side is Wayne Cashman, up from the Oklahoma City pennant winners of 1967-68. Cashman played 51 Bruin games last season and fit his six one, 170 pounds right into the Boston scheme of things with Bobby Orr and the Animals.Other varsity forwards are rough, tough, Garnet &ldquo;Ace&rdquo; Bailey up from Hershey of the American Hockey League and Jim Lorentz, the center ice star of the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central League. Lorentz has shown that he fits in right well with the bruising Bruins when his running check put New York&rsquo;s Bob Nevin out of action in the second minute of the New York &mdash; Boston opener. Jim Harrison, another Blazer prodigy completes the present roster.The Bruins traded young defensemen Barry Gibbs and Grant Erickson off their Oklahoma roster to the Minnesota North Stars in return for a draft choice. They sent Eddie &ldquo;The Entertainer&rdquo; Shack to Los Angeles for the future draft choices and in general Schmidt comported himself during the offseason as would Sam Pollack, the Canadiens GM.In a word, Schmidt is loaded for bear and we don&rsquo;t mean Bruin. The Boston farm system in the past few seasons has also produced such as Doug Favell and Bernie Parent, the Philadelphia goalies and Joe Watson, the youthful Phillv defender.A dynasty can only oe established by first winning the title and then proving enduring supremacy. With muscle, hustle and super players like Orr and Espo, Boston has a jump on everyone, including Montreal. The Canucks may have the players but when Beliveau goes can he be replaced overnight? That is where Orr and Esposito come in. Since Schmidt is now stockpiling draft choices and has such Oklahoma whizzes as defenseman Barry Wilkins and forwards Tom Webster and Steve Atkinson Champing at the bit, the Bruins should be able to match Montreal in &ldquo;regular&rdquo; personnel and will have the edge with Orr and Espo. &#9632;

Every aspect about the operation of the Philly Flyers is big league all the way. The team plays in the Philadelphia Spectrum, one of the finest arenas in operation today. The Blueline Club, the private dining and drinking club housed in the building, is one of the most successful of its kind&hellip;. and the Philadelphia Flyers ran viuo gives, me riyvia one of the most active and enthusiastic fan clubs to be found anywhere. This group of ultra-keen hockey followers has grown steadily since the Flyers were formed in 1967. President of the Flyers Fan Club is Lou Damia, who recently succeeded John Wagner, and Dick Quinlan is the hard-working secretarytreasurer of the organization&hellip; And finally but most importantly, Bud Poile, Keith Allen and Vic Stasiuk have lined up a most improved and interesting NHL entry this season&hellip; The current roster of the Flyers is studded with young players who came up through the minor pro ranks and never played in the NHL prior to expansion &hellip; Two of the best young rookies to show in the NHL this season, center Bob Clarke and right wing Lew Morrison play on a Flyer line along with veteran Reg Fleming. Clarke and Morrison are two of the better skaters and stickhandlers to break into the league for a while and these two clean-cut youngsters have the Philly fans highly excited &hellip; Rugged Reggie, who has been one of the top &ldquo;policemen&rdquo; in the circuit for the past few years, plays the heavy on the unit leaving Clarke and Morrison to roam free on the ice &hellip; Larry and Wayne Hillman, forming one of two brother defensive combos in the NHL, have played well for the Flyers so far &hellip; as has the prolific goal-getter Andre Lacroix &hellip; Vic Stasiuk, highly-regarded coach of the Flyers, is not pleased with his &ldquo;French Line&rdquo; of late and has indicated he may break up the forward unit of center Lacroix and wingers Jean-Guy Gendron and Dick Sarrazin.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-02687/2809834-1-eng-US/f0004-022.jpg" title="f0004-02" width="256" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ed Snider</figcaption></div>&bull; BOSTON BRUINS could sell twice as many tickets to their home games if they had the seats available. <div class="byline">BY TOM MONAHAN</div>BOSTON&mdash;Seven games into the 1969-70 National Hockey League season, the Bruins were undefeated and enjoying a four-point lead over second place Montreal in the East Division.The historians were going back to determine the last time the B&rsquo;s had jumped from the gate with such a start.Three games later the records were forgotten. The B&rsquo;s were thumped, 4-2, at Toronto and, 9-2, at Montreal and had to struggle to a 4-4 tie against the Maple Leafs back in Boston Garden.They now were tied with New York for first place &mdash; both teams had 14 points.The season was back in perspective.It now seemed Boston&rsquo;s fanatical following might realize that alter all the Bruins are human and that the NHL season is 76 games long.Bruins&rsquo; coach Harry Sinden at least hoped the fans and everyone else, including his players, would realize this.He went even further to point out the humanity of the present B&rsquo;s squad with the vital statistic that there are six comparatively new faces in the lineup this year.&ldquo;1 don&rsquo;t mean that we can&rsquo;t or won&rsquo;t finish first in our division,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I just hope now that there is realization that no team in this league is geared to run away with the race.&ldquo;I figure this is again going to be a dog-fight right down to the final week with at least three teams in concention all the way.&ldquo;It may even wind up with three teams being in the fight for first down to the final game.&ldquo;Let&rsquo;s look at it this way,&rdquo; said Sinden. &ldquo;The Bruins have a good team. I can&rsquo;t deny it. No one will deny it. But let&rsquo;s not start talking in terms of a super team.&ldquo;We went down to the final game of the season with Montreal a year ago and then we went through our section of the playoffs and lost in six games with a double-overtime goal beating us.&ldquo;We were young last year and just getting the feel of the playoffs.&ldquo;I suppose it is natural to assume that we now should walk through the league.&ldquo;Unfortunately, I couldn&rsquo;t make that assumption. I said before the season that I thought we could win it all. I still think so. But 1 was being a bit cautious because of several things.&ldquo;The first was that I looked for improvement from some of the other teams, particularly the West Division teams.&ldquo;They have proved me right even this early in the season. I also felt New York, Detroit and Toronto would be better and Montreal still is Montreal.&ldquo;Now on top of that we have six new players in our lineup.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s true Wayne Cashman, and Rick Smith were up with us last year. Gary Doak also has been around for two or three years. Jim Lorentz, Jim Harrison and &lsquo;Ace&rsquo; Garnet Bailey all showed with us last year.&ldquo;But just analyse how many games and how much ice time they had last season.&ldquo;Cashman was not a regular, Smith was a spare defenseman. Doak was sick and hurt most of the year. Lorentz, Harrison and Bailey played a total of 35 games among them.&ldquo;Now on top of that we lose an All-Star defenseman named Teddy Green and an All-Star center named Derek Sanderson.&ldquo;So what do you have?&rsquo; You have over one-third of your skaters as what can be termed rookies.&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t get me wrong. These aren&rsquo;t bad &lsquo;rookies&rsquo;. These are good hockey players. But their NHL experience has been limited.&ldquo;This is the type of situation you might see with a team that is in a rebuilding process.&ldquo;Normally you might see two new players on the ice in a given season. But we are putting out six.&ldquo;So when people started talking that we would hide from the rest of the opposition, I had to shudder.&ldquo;I&rsquo;d have shuddered at this kind of thinking even if this was the &mdash; greatest team that ever went on the ice.&ldquo;These days there aren&rsquo;t any teams around like that in any sport, particularly, in hockey.&ldquo;This is a game of great emotional as well as physical impact.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a game of streaks and slumps.&ldquo;The idea is to keep the streaks at a maximum and the slumps at a minimum.&ldquo;The only way that can be accomplished is for everyone to realize that a job has to be done in every game.&ldquo;Experienced or inexperienced, every player has to know that the only way to win is to skate as hard and as fast as he can every night.&ldquo;That&rsquo;s not an easy thing to do, either physically or emotionally.&ldquo;It takes a great deal of selfdiscipline to know that you can&rsquo;t turn things on and off in hockey like taking water out of the faucet.&ldquo;When you lose you have to try harder. When you win you have to keep trying harder to keep on winning.&ldquo;Even then you can&rsquo;t figure on any team in the league putting first place in its pocket before that final week of the season.&rdquo; &#9632;

He also had three goals in 8 games with the Bruins and this season when he came up with an impressive training camp, the B&rsquo;s signed him to an NHL contract. He&rsquo;s 5&ldquo;11&rdquo; and weighs 180. &#9632;

Meet The Rookies

CLEVELAND&mdash;The Cleveland Barons&rsquo; decision not to apply for an NHL expansion franchise under &ldquo;present terms and conditions&rdquo; received cheers from fans and unanimous editorial reaction from all Cleveland media when owner Nick Mileti made that announcement between periods of the Barons-Hershey game at the Arena, October 31. Mileti&rsquo;s letter to NHL prexy Clarence Campbell read:&ldquo;As you are no doubt aware, we are deeply and sincerely committed to bringing major league hockey to Cleveland, Ohio. We have, therefore, made an exhaustive analysis and thorough investigation of the factors relating to your expansion plan.&ldquo;We of course, recognize the right of the Board of Governors of the National Hockey League to establish such criteria as they see fit for entry into the NHL. However, we cannot agree with the terms and conditions as set forth and therefore reluctantly decline the opportunity, at this time, to file an application for a franchise for Cleveland, Ohio in the NHL.&ldquo;Because there has been considerable public discussion regarding all terms and aspects of this expansion, we feel that no constructive purpose can be achieved by a restatement on our part.&ldquo;We re-affirm our commitment to bring major league hockey to Cleveland. Therefore, should a new or amended Plan of Expansion be developed by the NHL, we will appreciate immediate notification.&rdquo; &#9632;

Barons’ Owner Mileti Outlines Cleveland’s Stand On Expansion

<div class="byline">by CHARLIE HALPIN</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01765/2810006-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="274" height="358"></div>&bull; NHL&rsquo;S muzzle rule&mdash; which prohibits coaches, players and officials from speaking their mind about the league or its refereeing under threat of a fine&mdash;will come in for a further fest in the next week or so.Harry Sinden, the gentleman coach of the Boston Bruins allegebly stared the Hub press in the face Nov. 2 and fold them he thought referee Vern Buffey was a slow-footed, over-stuffed official who couldn&rsquo;t get out of his own way or the puck for that matter.Such allegiations didn&rsquo;t escape the eagle eye of NHL President Clarence Campbell of course and the NHL&rsquo;s chief magistrate will no doubt deal with the same Mr. Sinden for his unflattering words about Mr. Buffey.It seems Buff, considered the &lsquo;NHL&rsquo;s No 1 whistle blower, was walking a tight rope trying to get out of the way of a puck passed by Boston defenseman Don Awrey out of the Hub zone. The puck didn&rsquo;t make it i and neither did Buffey. It hit him and riocheted on to Ron Ellis&rsquo;s stick and he slapped it info the Boston net for a goal. It i was the game fieing goal to boot.Sinden and Bruins&rsquo; GM Milt Schmidt have contended that Buffey isn&rsquo;t in shape and can&rsquo;t keep up with the play&mdash;the latter gripe credited to Sin-den with the Boston press within ear shot. The little tribute could cost Harry money when Campbell acts on the case.&bull;IT SEEMS Buffey couldn&rsquo;t finish a game in San Diego 10 days ago because of a groin injury and if this is the case then it seems logical that he should not have been working the Boston-Toronto game but resting.Joe Kane, there&rsquo;s that man again, has demanded a full investigation and rightly so. Joe&rsquo;s the official mouthpiece for the men in the striped shirts and he wants to make sure no injustice is done his clients.Meanwhile, Kane says his association is not going to sit around and let one of its paid-up members&mdash;Buffey is actually the vice-president &mdash; be subjected to public ridicule by any NHL official or coach. He said he was in touch with Schmidt, who denied uttering the charges that Buffey was out of condition, to the press. Sinden had no comment. Kane whipped off a letter to Campbell outlining his group&rsquo;s feelings.Kane has maintained that harassment of officials was one of the grievances the referees and linesmen complained about when they staged their preseason strike threat against the NHL. In reality, he said it amounted to attempted intimidation by the individual clubs to influence officials.&bull;APPARENTLY theonlyofficial comment from the league came from referee-in-chief Scotty Morrison, who said he would study films of the games involving Buffey and report to Campbell. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY BYRON YAKE</div>PITTSBURGHIt was enough to cheer up anybody who thought the goblins were preying on the fortunes of the Pittsburgh Penguins.Victorious only once&mdash;against the Minnesota North Stars who have been like cousins to the Penguins&mdash;Red Kelly&rsquo;s squad was host to the same Stars two days after Halloween.The Stars had not defeated the Penguins in three games, including two exhibitions and the regular season game when they dumped the North Stars 4-1.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-02624/2810037-1-eng-US/f0006-022.jpg" title="f0006-02" width="265" height="454"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dean Prentice</figcaption></div>The Penguins, showing more aggressiveness, were scoring goals, but still lacked a real consistent spark. So Coach Red Kelly decided a shakeup of his lines was necessary.The most important change was teaming up the much traveled Dean Prentice, still searching for his 300th goal (his former teammates, the New York Rangers shut him out the game before) with rookie center, 20-year-old Michel Briere and veteran Ken Schinkel.&ldquo;Schinkel should be scoring more,&rdquo; Kelly said. &ldquo;He wants to pass too much. I can&rsquo;t get him to shoot.&rdquo;Kelly worked miracles&mdash;at least for that one night&mdash;against the North Stars.After two periods the score was tied 1-1 in a game of mostly penalties.Suddenly, the dyke broke. Prentice took a pass from Briere and Schinkel and gunned it past Minnesota rookie goalie Ken Broderick at one minute of the final period. Tracy Pratt, a defenseman who has returned from injuries to face the North Stars, banged in a backhanded shot from 20 feet in front on the nets two minutes later and the Penguins were going away 3-1.But suddenly it wasn&rsquo;t that easy and the Stars tied the game with five minutes left on goals by Jean Paul Parise and Tom Williams.Then the Prentice-Briere-Schinkel line went tc work again.Prentice scored his 301st goal and Briere got his first National Hockey League goal, then Bob Woytowich iced the party with another one for a final 6-3 score.Did Red Kelly find the secret to the Penguins winning problem?&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know, but that line looked pretty good didn&rsquo;t it?&rdquo; he asked in return.&ldquo;Dino (Prentice) is pretty good for Michel. He hollers in there and he likes to shoot. Mike might pass instead of shoot sometimes, but with Dino in there &hellip; I think it will help him.&ldquo;They played great hockey &hellip; this is a great win &hellip; our first win here. And that&rsquo;s a pretty good hockey team we were playing,&rdquo; the Hochey Hall of Famer said.But the Penguins still had not proved they could defeat any other club except the North Stars.The next night in Detroit, the Penguins took a 3-1 lead going into the third period, but Gordie Howe, doing it by himself, scored three quick goals and the Red Wings won 4-3. &#9632;

Kelly’s Line Shifting Lifts Penguins, Aids Prentice To Net Milestone Goa!

<div class="byline">YAKE</div>PITTSBURGH&mdash;Dean Prentice had just joined a select group of 12 players who have scored 300 goals in the National Hockey League.He did it by scoring his 300th and 301st on the same night.The Pittsburgh Penguins won their first game ot the year at home before their largest crowd of the season (6,000) and to add to the cheer, it was Coach Red Kelly&rsquo;s first victory at the Civic Arena as coach of the Penguins.But Prentice wanted to talk mostly about the kid, 20-year-old Michel Briere who got his first goal in the NHL, the same night.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s got a fine future ahead of him,&rdquo; volunteered the 17-year veteran who started with the New York Rangers in 1952.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-03468/2810068-1-eng-US/f0006-032.jpg" title="f0006-03" width="268" height="451"><figcaption class="caption-body">Michel Briere</figcaption></div>Briere, his French accent bubbling through his broken English, told Prentice how happy he was to get his first goal.&ldquo;I told him it won&rsquo;t be long until he&rsquo;s going for No. 300,&rdquo; said the 37-year-old Prentice.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a real nice feeling,&rdquo; said Briere, who was picked up by the Penguins in the draft.&ldquo;My parents were watching TV&mdash;the Boston-Montreal game&mdash;and they always announce the scoring of other games. I&rsquo;m sure they will be happy,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why I am so happy.&rdquo;Briere, center on the line of Prentice and veteran Ken Schinkel, said he now has more confidence playing with veterans.&ldquo;They tell me what I should do. They help me. I think I can do better now,&rdquo; he said.The 160-pound Briere says playing in the NHL was always a dream. &ldquo;But I never thought I make it as young as I am. They had 15 centers in camp, you know.&rdquo;Briere, the darling of the Penguins, likes to play tennis and winger Glen Sather, picked up by the Penguins from the Boston Bruins, offered to play tennis with Briere.&ldquo;He told me,&rdquo; Briere said. &ldquo;You learn me tennis and I will learn you hockey.&rdquo;The way Briere is setting up plays, and now shooting more, it may be the &ldquo;kid&rdquo; who soon becomes the teacher. &#9632;

His Detroit Red Wings had fired Bill Gadsby as coach, and Abel, the manager, had reassumed the coaching reins, for a while, at least. Everywhere Sid had gone since, all he&rsquo;s been asked is why Gadsby had been fired. The fans were furious, the writers were critical and many of the players were bitter. It wouldn&rsquo;t have been so bad if Gadsby had been removed after failing to make the playoffs last season, but the Wings waited all summer, let Bill take the team through training, then when he had won his first two games of the regular season sacked him. &ldquo;I must admit our timing was terrible,&rdquo; Abel sighed, sitting on a bench in an emDtv locker room and looking down at his emntv hands.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-01751/2810130-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="629" height="876"><figcaption class="caption-body">CARL BREWER&hellip;Not Moses But An All-Star</figcaption></div>Owner Bruce Norris was traveling with the team, but that didn&rsquo;t take any heat off Abel, there had been talk of interterence all along tne line ever since Gadsby took the job. Of course, a coach has to work with an owner and manager. But he also has to have enough of a free hand to rise or fall on his own merits. &ldquo;There was a problem of communication,&rdquo; Sid said vaguely.&ldquo;It really wasn&rsquo;t as much of a shock to Gadsby as it seemed. We&rsquo;d had meetings for days before the move was made. I don&rsquo;t think Bill is bitter any more. Why he&rsquo;s even working for us. He&rsquo;s scouting for us. He precedes us into cities and scouts the next team we&rsquo;ll play, then reports to us so we can plan properly for each game.&rdquo; We asked if this really was a serious undertaking. &ldquo;Definitely. It really is,&rdquo; Sid insisted. &ldquo;Hockey hasn&rsquo;t done enough of this, which is done so much in other sports.&rdquo;Gadsby had just begun his new task, which is preferable to, say, cutting down trees or selling shoes, but the Wings still won this game easily without scouting. Afterwards, Wing owner Norris went around happily introducing youngsters to his chattels. There were some immortals in that dressing room&mdash;Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Frank Mahovlich, Bobby Baun. The stars of this team are old. With them and Gadsbv. the team missed the playoffs. There are some good younger players and promising kids such as Garry Unger and Pete btemkowski, but if the team makes it this season, it will be primarily because of the addition of Carl Brewer, who is 31 and in his eighth NHL season after four seasons away from the bigtime.<h2>Return Of The Departed&hellip;</h2>BREWER, OF COURSE, played seven seasons with Toronto, attaining All-Star status before he left, incredibly, at his peak. He dreaded flying. He couldn&rsquo;t get along with tough Leaf boss Punch Imlach. He felt his buddy, Bobby Baun, was being treated badly by the Leafs and Imlach. &ldquo;It was a lot of things,&rdquo; Carl says now. &ldquo;I like hockey, but it&rsquo;s not the only thing in life. I like the money you make it the NHL, but money isn&rsquo;t my god.&rdquo;He is a brilliant, sensitive, moody person, a rare individualist. He sat out hockey a year. He got reinstated as an amateur, which, of course, is ridiculous, and played a year for the Canadian national team,.competing in the world championships in Vienna; a year as assistant playing-coach of Muskegon, Michigan in the International League, which named him its top defenseman, which was no upset; then a year as a player-coach in Finland.The Wings got rights to him along with Mahovlich, Stemkowski and Unger in exchange for Norm Ullman, Paul Henderson and Floyd Smith in one of the most lopsided deals in sports history, for which no one dares criticize Abel. Sid sweet-talked Brewer into returning reuniting him with Baun. The recent night we saw him, Carl looked almost as good as ever, still mean and slick. Sid says, &ldquo;He has to be one of the all-star defensemen in this league now. And he has to help us.&rdquo;When Carl first reappeared, he was discussed so much as the man who would lead his people out of the wilderness, he finally snapped, &ldquo;Look, my name isn&rsquo;t Moses.&rdquo; He says, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not in top shape yet, but I&rsquo;m progressing. I think I can help. And I think this is a good team which will come on to have a good season.&rdquo; The others were showering, rushing to make the team bus. Brewer sat in his sweat-soggy underclothes resting. Others urged him to hurry. He said, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t worry about it.&rdquo; With what they&rsquo;re paying him, they were not about to leave him.One of the few who speaks his mind without compromise, the now-balding Brewer says, &ldquo;No, I did not miss the NHL. There are too many other things to do, like coaching and travelling. I like working with young players, but the pressure of coaching, worrying about 18 other players as well as yourself, was a bit too much, and I don&rsquo;t think I&rsquo;d be interested in doing more of it. I love seeing the world and loved Helsinki. I was invited back and think maybe I should have gone, but I have no real regrets. It seemed like it was not time for me to retire from playing in the majors completely yet, so I returned.&rdquo;Carl and his wife Marilyn, have two sons. &ldquo;She&rsquo;s a hockey wife and she&rsquo;s used to moving around,&rdquo; he shrugged. He took flying lessons this summer, but says these didn&rsquo;t help his fear of flying. &ldquo;Those were in small planes. It&rsquo;s the big ones that bother me, though it hasn&rsquo;t been as bad so far as it was in the past,&rdquo; he noted. He says he learned some hockey in Europe. &ldquo;They had to start from scratch a few years back and approached it scientifically. They took what we had and added some wrinkles of their own. They have some interesting theories I hope to apply in time, though I&rsquo;d rather keep them to myself. A fellow like me needs some edge,&rdquo; he smiled. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY DAN MOULTON</div>CHICAGO &mdash;The Black Hawks&rsquo; first nine games sans Bobby Hull weren&rsquo;t quite the disaster most observers, including this one. predicted, despite the fact that Hawks came up short in six of those outings.First, some of the Hawks discovered, after a hesitant start, that it is possible for the team to score goals without the presence of No. 9 on the ice.This seemed tougher for the team veterans to realize than for the rookies, naturally. But they seemed to grasp the idea during a four-game road trip that produced victories over Montreal and Los Angeles and a 1-1 tie with New York.&ldquo;We got a tremendous team effort during the whole trip, said Coach Billy Reav. &ldquo;And with a break or two, we could have come off the trip with four wins.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-03547/2810168-1-eng-US/f0008-032.jpg" title="f0008-03" width="545" height="840"><figcaption class="caption-body">TONY ESPOSITO &hellip;Pays Off On Hunches</figcaption></div>&ldquo;Eddie Giacomin played a tremendous game in goal for the Rangers and Gary Smith of Oakland was as sensational against us as he always is.&rdquo;Reay used Tony Esposito in the wins over Montreal and L.A. and in the loss to Oakland but insists that Tony should not be regarded as No. 1, ahead of Denis DeJordy.&ldquo;I thought Dejordy played a great game in the 1-1 tie with New York,&rdquo; said Billy. &ldquo;But I decided to go with Tony in Montreal in hopes that he&rsquo;d be fired up against the team that let him go and it worked.&ldquo;Then, on the west coast I went with Esposito because we hadn&rsquo;t had much luck out there on trips using either DeJordv or Dave Dryden.&ldquo;And again it worked. The goal that beat us in Oakland went in off one of our defensemen&rsquo;s legs and Tony turned in a good effort against the Kings.&rdquo;When Hull returns, the only major problem will be the game-to-game availablitv of veteran defenseman-left wing Doug Mohns, whose sciatic nerve condition appears now to be chronic.Doug missed the first three games of the road trip because he was in Henrotin Hospital, spending several hours each day in traction. But he was on hand for the trip&rsquo;s finale in Los Angeles and worked full-time.&ldquo;I just never know when the thing is going to start acting up,&rdquo; said Doug.&rdquo;There&rsquo;s medicine you can take once it hits but no way to forecast it.&ldquo;The trouble is that there&rsquo;s a defective disc in my spine that occasionally slips out of line. When that happens, pressure is applied to a muscle which then pinches a nerve and sends pain running down my right leg.&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no chance playing through the pain, either. When things go bad, the leg stiffens up and I can&rsquo;t move.&rdquo;Doug has just about resigned himself to being plagued by the problem for t he rest of his career.&ldquo;There is some sort of operation that could take care of it, but there&rsquo;s some danger and t here is no assurance that I could keep playing,&rdquo; said Doug. &ldquo;So. 1 guess I&rsquo;ll just have to keep going and keep hoping.&rdquo;While in Henrotin, Doug frequently visited with former linemate Kenny Warram, who has been confined there since Sept. 16 because of a heart attack.&ldquo;He still isn&rsquo;t having any visitors. except members of the family and guvs from the team.&rdquo; reported Doug. &ldquo;But he is making very good progress right now. The doctors have finally found what the real problem is and are treating him with something that&rsquo;s getting real results.&ldquo;So his spirit is good for the first time since he got sick.&rdquo; &#9632;

It May Sound Strange But Absence Of Hull Sours More Team Effort

Phil Bezonsky, financial expert, Los Angeles:&ldquo;The breakaway because it covers both the great shot and the great save. When a player breaks in alone on a goalie, one on one, it brings you to your feet. It used to be when a player carried the puck and skated through an entire team, but in this day and age such solo plays like they used to have in the past just don&rsquo;t seem to happen any more.&rdquo;Richard Serepsky, musician, San Francisco:&ldquo;The great save. A good pass is a beautiful thing. A good shot is often too fast to follow. Of course, a Hull breaking down a wing and letting fire a bullet and beating a goalie is exciting. But it is the goalie diving or leaping or something to somehow make a save of such a shot when you think ft&rsquo;s impossible that is really thrilling. Goaltending play is the one thing hockey has over most sports.&rdquo;Anthony Olivo, restaurateur, Phoenix:&ldquo;A good hard check. There&rsquo;s no way to beat it. There&rsquo;s just not enough of it these days, like there used to be when I watched the good teams in New York. Fans can talk all they want about the good shot or the good save, but you study them and you&rsquo;ll see that the thing that really excites them is the rough play, especially a real hard check. That&rsquo;s what they talk about going home, not someone&rsquo;s fine pass.&rdquo;Michel Mallard, musician, Montreal:&ldquo;The three-way passing play is in my mind the most beautiful thing you can see when you go to a hockey game. Jean Beliveau is famous for it and the great lines of hockey, like Montreal&rsquo;s old Punch Line, &lsquo;did it all the time. I thihk Beliveau is without doubt the master at setting up the perfect play in hockey&mdash;a three-way pass to score.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>DETROIT &mdash;The season is only a month old but there&rsquo;ve been some most encouraging signs for the Red Wings.For instance: Old, arthritic Gordie Howe triggered his 19th career hattrick&hellip; the Red Wings won games in which their play was something less than all-dominant&hellip; they won on the road&hellip; and they beat the Western Division.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-01730/2810230-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="256" height="439"><figcaption class="caption-body">Frank Mahovlich</figcaption></div>Put together five more months like that and they&rsquo;ll hang playoff bunting in the Olympia.Perhaps the most encouraging aspect was the ability to win games when the club didn&rsquo;t play all that well. There was the night against Pittsburgh when the Wings couldn&rsquo;t do anything right, looked as if their skates were screwed into the ice and fell behind 3-1.In past years that would&rsquo;ve been the game. Instead, Detroit fought back on Howe&rsquo;s three power play goals and won the game, 4-3.To be successful, a club has to win some games which it hasn&rsquo;t played well. There&rsquo;ve been plenty of games which the Wings didn&rsquo;t play well over the past three non-playoff years&hellip; but mighty few resulted in Detroit victories.Certainly Carl Brewer has been a great asset, giving the club poise in its own end which it so often lacked in the past.And Detroit is getting stronger play from its wingmen with Nick Libett the most improved and Bruce MacGregor next.Libett has been especially impressive for his offensive aggressiveness but he&rsquo;s also been proficient in getting back to help out in the Wings&rsquo; own end.The team&rsquo;s road play and its early performances against the Western Division were very notable opening month achievements. The topper was the sweep of the Wings&rsquo; first trip to California, 5-2 in Los Angeles and 3-1 in Oakland. It marked the first time in six coast trips that the Wings won both games.Matter of fact, the Wings had a dismal 3-4-3 won-lost-tied California record prior to this season, winning only once in five tries in Oakland.Club president Bruce Norris observed both games and treated, the team to dinner in Sausalito, across the Golden Gate Bridge, during the stay in Oakland. Norris, you&rsquo;ll remember, made the boys quite unhappy when he fired Bill Gadsby as coach. Gads was well-liked.There was movement on that front, too, with Gadsby taking a position as pro scout following two days of meetings with Norris. Gadsby will scout future Red Wing opponents, a post that is becoming rather popular with former coaches these days&hellip; Bernie Geoffrion does that for New York.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-02672/2810223-1-eng-US/f0009-022.jpg" title="f0009-02" width="552" height="1623"><figcaption class="caption-body">The Big Fella, GORDIE HOWE, is still popping them in. He recently registered his 19th NHL hat trick.</figcaption></div>One of Gadsby&rsquo;s first assignments was scouting a game between two Western Division clubs and he returned shaking his head.&ldquo;The old clubs ought to beat these guys by five or six goals every time,&rdquo; Gadsby said. But he knows well that they don&rsquo;t. His Red Wings last year had the worst East vs. West record in the league: 18 victories, 13 defeats and five ties for 41 points. Compare that to Montreal&rsquo;s 56 points against the West and 52 for New York and Boston.But this time around the Wings started out very strong against the West.And they started strong on the road, another old shortcoming, with their best point start since all the way back to 1951-52 when that club went 15 in a row on the road before losing a 1-0 game in New York.Another promising aspect of the first month was a balanced attack, thanks in large measure to general manager Sid Abel&rsquo;s revamping of the second and third lines, returning rookie Garry Monahan to center after the former Montrealer failed to score a goal in 18 games, exhibition and regular season.In the first game after he was returned to center, Monahan potted his first NHL goal&hellip; and then he scored in the next game.Howe, who has been bothered by an arthritic condition in his left wrist, is concerned because he&rsquo;s been stickhandling onehanded because of the condition &hellip; but he still managed his best goal getaway in his 24 NHL seasons with seven in nine games.Howe wears a brace on the wrist during practice but discards it during games.Howe&rsquo;s linemates are rolling along, too. Frank Mahovlich assisted on two of Howe&rsquo;s goals in his hat trick game and the two points lifted the Big M&rsquo;s career point total to 700.Center Alex Delvecchio assisted on all three goals and they came in Delvecchio&rsquo;s 1,245th game, putting him No. 4 on the all-time list of regular season games played, passing retired Allan Stanley. By the time you read this, he should be No. 3, passing Gadsby who played 1,248 in 20 seasons. Ahead then are Red Kelly, retired at 1,316 games and Howe, still going strong after 1,557 games at this writing. &#9632;

GORDIE HOWE: GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER IN HISTORY?

Kings have discovered some fine prospects in less than three years, including their goalkeeper, Gerry Desjardins, and a winger who is prepping in the minors, Gary &ldquo;Bull&rdquo; Croteau, but none seems more promising than Dale &ldquo;Red&rdquo; Hoganson, a first-year pro who was seeing frequent action in the NHL during the first month of the season.A few years from now, Desjardins and Hoganson could be first All-Stars. When that happens, the Kings will have parity with the established teams.Hoganson is a product of the first draft of 20-year-old juniors who have become eligible to graduate from amateur ranks. This is the draft that will equalize the distribution of talent among all NHL teams, new and old, in time. Before this draft, Hoganson and others like him almost certainly would have wound up with established teams, probably those which prepped them as youngsters.Aside from Hoganson, the Kings also landed two other outstanding prospects, defenseman Greg Boddy and goaler Bruce Landon, both of whom are being broken in at Springfield in the American League. Landon has been sensational so far and may eventually move up to alternate with Desjardins in L.A., freeing the Kings to trade the injury-bothered, but brilliant and underrated young Wayne Rutledge, who is better than some regular goalers in the NHL.Hoganson is one of several products of the draft of 20-year-olds who have begun their first season in the pro ranks in the NHL. Two others are the sensational Bob Clarke of Philadelphia and Marc Tardif of Montreal. Hoganson got his chance when the Kings came up short of defensemen, primarily when Bill White jumped the team.If White returns, Hoganson may go down for further schooling. Kings&rsquo; coach Hal Laycoe says, &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to be able to keep him all season because if I do, that means he&rsquo;s playing well enough to be kept. He certainly has played very well so far. Possibly, he could learn as much watching from the bench and playing in spots here as playing full-time in the minors.&rdquo;There is merit to this, though it is debatable. Playing against class competition under the coaching of Laycoe, a fine defenseman in his day, Hoganson probably would progress more rapidly than in the minors. A veteran player &ldquo;might&rdquo; help L.A. more now, though the Kings, building for the future, should be able to afford to carry a kid of Dale&rsquo;s class.Hoganson, who has a lot of loose, floppy hair and is a dead ringer for musical actor Bobby Morse, who often watches him in L.A., is a 6-foot, 190-pounder with 28-inch thighs, yet has not gotten his full growth or maturity yet. He is powerful and thrives on body contact. He is a strong skater, a fine puck-handler and fearless. He is an unusually smart player for one of his years, and plays position hockey.Above all, the one thing that stands out in his play is the poise he displays for a 20-year-old Perhaps &lsquo;this comes from seven seasons of grooming in good amateur ranks, but he seems unusually cool for a kid. He makes mistakes, but covers up smoothly, swiftly and without panic.L.A. manager Larry Regan says, &ldquo;He reminds me of Bobby Orr. This is not to say he&rsquo;s going to be another Orr. Orrs don&rsquo;t come around very often. But neither do Hogansons. He has many of Orr&rsquo;s fine qualities.&rdquo; Kings&rsquo; coach Laycoe says, &ldquo;He has a great body and a good mind. He&rsquo;s strong and quick and very cool.&rdquo; Opposing coach Fred Glover of Oakland says, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s going to be a great one.&rdquo; Boston coach Harry Sinden said, &ldquo;I want to tell you, I wish we had him.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-02653/2810285-1-eng-US/f0010-022.jpg" title="f0010-02" width="544" height="574"><figcaption class="caption-body">DALE HOGANSON &hellip;A Future Superstar?</figcaption></div>The Bruins almost did. Dale was born in North Battleford, Sask., on July 8, 1949, and lives less than two blocks from another King, Skip Krake. Over his mother&rsquo;s protests, but with the consent of his father, Red left home at 13 to play hockey far from home, at Estevan with the Bruins&rsquo; team there, becoming a part-time student.Hoganson&rsquo;s father was a carpenter. There were five children. Times were tough. All Red wanted to do was play hockey. &ldquo;I boarded but, and I was a little lonely and a lot scared,&rdquo; the youngster admits, &ldquo;but I was playing hockey, so I was happy.&rdquo;Eventually, he quit school entirely. Most young men rate education a priority project these days, but when asked if he had any regrets now, the singleminded Hoganson says with enthusiasm, &ldquo;Heck no&mdash;Estevan was a great place to learn to play hockey.&rdquo;He graduated to the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; ranks, where he played three years, sometimes 55 minutes a game, and became an All-Star. Recommending him to the Kings, Red Hunter said. &ldquo;He has immense legs and is a strong skater. There isn&rsquo;t a young defenseman who can handle the puck better. He&rsquo;s so strong physically that nothing can stop him.&rdquo;The Kings drafted him. He was only the 14th player picked, but if there are 13 better young prospects around, hockey is in for a whale of a future. So far, the Kings have been startled how well he has lived up to his advance notices. He was knocked unconscious, suffering a concussion, in Oakland, but bounced back jauntily a fewnights later. Nothing fazes him.He is a shy, boyish lad, but confident. &ldquo;Nothing ever seems to bother me. It&rsquo;s my nature, I guess,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;It was scary when I went out on the ice for the first time in the NHL. This was in Montreal with a big crowd. We were killing a penalty. Henri Richard was coming at me. After that, the rest has seemed all right.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s really a big thrill. I have found out I have a lot to learn. I found out I can&rsquo;t get away with some moves that were great in Edmonton. But I&rsquo;d played with Skip Krake and some other NHL players in the past, so 1 felt I could make it in the NHL. Now I know it.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div>NEW YORK &mdash;After sputtering through the first seven games, the Rangers finally righted themselves and tore off a neat 3-0-1 skein to challenge Boston and Montreal for first place in the Eastern half of the circuit.What caused this metamorphosis was several things. The No. 1 line of Jean Ratelie, Rod Gilbert and Vic Hadfield continued to excel with Hadfield turning in his second career hat trick against the St. Louis Blues in Phil Goyette&rsquo;s &ldquo;homecoming&rdquo; on November 2. Goyette got two, but Vic scored the winner at 16.17 of the third stanza.So what, say you, Hadfield, Ratelle and Gilbert are supposed to lead the way. Right, but a good team has scoring balance throughout and that&rsquo;s were center Walter Tkaczuk, left wing Dave Balon and right winger Billy Fairbairn have come to the fore. Tkaczuk was the star of the night as New York came from behind to edge Toronto 3-2 on November, 1 with Balon, that&rsquo;s right, Balon, scoring the winner in the third period.Balon and his buddies have become the Rangers hottest line over the last six games, despite Hadfield&rsquo;s heroics. Amazingly, as we went to press. New York&rsquo;s leading scorer was Balon a five foot eleven inch, 180 pound left winger who has had a checkered NHL career.&ldquo;Maybe it&rsquo;s because I discarded my helmet in training camp. Whatever it is, I hope it keeps up,&rdquo; said Balon.&ldquo;The answer is simple,&rdquo; reveals Steve Brklacich, the Rangers&rsquo; Director of player personnel. &ldquo;Davey always could skate well and now he is playing with two young fellows in Tkaczuk and Fairbairn. He has to keep moving to keep up with them and it is paying off.&rdquo;Tkaczuk, for his part, is beginning to break through into the offensive starry status that was predicted for him when he was the all everything of the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey Association two seasons ago. In his rookie campaign last year, while playing mostly as a defensive forward, Walt recorded 12 goals and 24 assists. He bids fair to do about double that this season. At one point in the six game backbreaking schedule which New York fought its way through between October 25 and November 2, the Balon, Tkaczuk, Fairbairn line had scored eight of the Blueshirts last ten goals.The return of Bob Nevin was another Ranger plus. Bob was spotted against Toronto on November 1 and did all right. He has dropped back to the third line and right now is paired with rookie center Juha Widing and Donnie Marshall. Nevvy has taken a couple of turns on the point also and will get better when the rust of inactivity wears off.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-12243/2810799-1-eng-US/f0013-122.jpg" title="f0013-12" width="554" height="547"><figcaption class="caption-body">WALT TKACZUK &hellip; Leading Upsurge</figcaption></div>The overall balance Emile Francis, the Blueshirts General Manager-Coach, is trying to create, is shown by the formation of&rsquo; a fourth line which helped in the victory over St. Louis. Stewart responded with a cluch tap in tally versus the Blues.Francis said, &ldquo;Desire, determination and four lines brought us through that tough six games in nine days. We have depth and I think better days are in the offing.&rdquo;The Cat put his depth to work in Pittsburgh on October 29 when Terrence Sawchuk played his first full game as a Ranger goalie and came away with a 3-1 win over Red Kelly and the Penguins.&ldquo;Just doing my job,&rdquo; quipped Sawchuk, who obviously was happy with the turn of events.BLUE CHIPS: Gus Kvle, who scored a key goal in the 1950 Stanley Cup finals when the Rangers challenged Detroit in seven games made the first trip east with the Blues&hellip; Goyette is very happy with St. Louis and lives in a three bedroom apartment with a swimming pool, no less&hellip; Hadfield&rsquo;s hat trick had only one long blast in it, the other two being close in efforts&hellip; New York now has scored six power play goals &hellip; Balon has played in 501 NHL games &hellip; Rangers are outshooting almost all opponents. They poured 25 first period shots at the sensational Bruce Gamble in the Toronto nets 11/1 and still were behind 0-1 at the end of the stanza. The otburst equalled the best done all last year in the NHL &hellip; Walt Tkaczuk received one of the three star awards two nights in a row, against Toronto November 1 and St. Louis November 2. &#9632;

Sputtering Rangers Climb Back To Top As Hadfield, Baton, Tkaczuk Turn It On

NEW YORK &mdash;Vic Hadfield, the New York Rangers hard rock left wing had taken over the goal scoring lead in the NHL. After a three goal hat trick, the second of his career versus the St. Louis Blues on November 2, the ruggedly handsome Hadfield was leading the league with 8 goals.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m just shooting the puck the same as always, but it seems to be going in,&rdquo; says Vic.Hadfield, an offseason golf pro, got 20 goals in 1967-68 and 26 last term. He blasted a forty footer past Ernie Wakely in the St. Louis goal in the second period, the followed up with two close in shots for his hat.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-13209/2810830-1-eng-US/f0013-132.jpg" title="f0013-13" width="274" height="431"><figcaption class="caption-body">Vic Hadfield</figcaption></div>In other New York developments, statistics showed that the New York holding line Walter Tkaczuk, Fairbairn and Dave Balon was doing far more than merely holding the foe. NHL’s Top Goal Getter Says “Shooting Puck The Same”

We have been lucky so far because the East has been beating the West and holding back our competition. But it can&rsquo;t last forever and we&rsquo;ve got to start doing some of our own dirty work.&rdquo;Frank Selke, the energetic general manager of the Oakland Seals, was mad. He had reason to be for his club wasn&rsquo;t exactly playing the brand of hockey either he or coach Fred Glover had expected.By Nov. 3, the Seals were tied for second place in the West, apoint behind St. Louis. But in their first nine games, the Seals had only scored 19 gpals or a raction more than two goals per game.Obviously, the offense wasn&rsquo;t consistent enough to suit Selke.After their season-opening 2-2 tie with Pittsburgh, the Seals have won and lost on alternate nights &mdash; no double wins or double losses. Their record was 44-1.&ldquo;Sure, we&rsquo;ve been problem right now lucky,&rdquo; added Selke. &ldquo;But I don&rsquo;t think we can be lucky all the time. We&rsquo;ve got to have a total game eifort each night. We just aren&rsquo;t good enough to have 10 guys doing a job and expect to be a success. our problem right now is that we&rsquo;ve only got about 10 guys who are doing a job. That has to change.&ldquo;I think we&rsquo;ve got the potential to challenge St. Louis for the top. But if potential doesn&rsquo;t become a reality, we are in trouble.&rdquo;The two players who seem to be getting most of the blame are wings Bill Hicke and Brian Perry.Although both forwards were scoring, both Selke and Glover are of the opinion that neither is in shape physically and not skating they way they should. Back-checking is their biggest problem.Another player with a problem or two, though not in the sameway as Hicke or Perry, is captain Ted Hampson.After nine games, Hampson only had two assists and last year he had 75 points in 76 games. He was a West Division all star and winner of the Bill Masterton Trophy as the NHL&rsquo;s &ldquo;unsung hero.&rdquo; Twice in the two years he has been with Oakland he has won the team scoring championship.He started out well during training camp. He led the camp scorers, but since regular season play began, he has been in a serious slump.&ldquo;I think the problem started when we put Teddy with Don O&rsquo;Donoghue (a 20-year-old rookie). Teddy was so concerned that Don get off to a good start, he began to try to play two positions. Nobody can do that. Then when we replaced O&rsquo;Donoghue with Gary Jarrett, the problem just carried over,&rdquo; Selke said.Hampson isn&rsquo;t exactly sure that&rsquo;s what happened, but for certain he doesn&rsquo;t want his slump blamed on anybody but himself. And he&rsquo;s certain that things will get better.That&rsquo;s fine for Hampson, but what about Jarrett (1 goal), or veteran Gerry Ehman (scoreless), or Gene Ubriaco, or Carol Vadnais? The Seals decided Ubriaco needed more ice time and shipped him to Providence of the AHL subject to recall.Ironically, the rookies have been key figures so far, not the veterans&mdash;with the notable exception of Mike Laughton.In the last couple of games, Hicke and Perry have been moved off Laughton&rsquo;s line and replaced by O&rsquo;Donoghue and Tony Featherstone. Ubriaco was shifted from wing to center for Hicke and Perry before he left for Providence.Featherstone got his first taste of NHL play last week when the Seals beat Chicago, 3-1. He only played about half a game that night, hut played a little longer as the Seals lost 3-1 to Detroit in the next game.Everybody was wondering just how good Featherstone really was, after all, he was around for so long and wasn&rsquo;t playing. And Featherstone wound up assisting on the game-winning goal, scored by O&rsquo;Donoghue.No doubt Featherstone and O&rsquo;Donoghue are going to stick with the Seals for a while.&ldquo;If we could just get some of our veterans to take the same attitude as our kids, and that includes Joe Hardy and Wayne Muloin as well as Tony and Don, then we&rsquo;d never have a worry,&rdquo; Selke said. &#9632;

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

<div class="byline">BY JIM PROUDFOOT</div>TORONTO&mdash;Jim McKenny would prefer to play defense, if he had a choice. But rather than not play at all, he&rsquo;s content to skate up on right wing, the newest position assigned to him by Maple Leaf coach Johnny McLellan.&ldquo;I think he&rsquo;s our man,&rdquo; McLellan said after testing McKenny in the vacancy created by George Arm strong&rsquo;s retirement. He had placed the youngster on the starboard flank with centre Mike Walton and left winger Brit Selby and had been rewarded with an important goal, by McKenny, in a victory over Boston Bruins.&ldquo;Finding a third right winger is, of course, one of my major projects,&rdquo; McLellan had pointed out, noting that, while he had Ron Ellis and Floyd Smith in that spot, he had yet to discover the other one.In Walton and Selby, he had two-thirds of an effective forward line. Several candidates had been tried with them and so far, the muscular, aggressive McKenny has been the best.In a sense, it&rsquo;s a lucky break for McKenny because he seemed to be the odd man out in Leafs&rsquo; defense shuffle.&rsquo; McLellan had been carrying seven rearguards, but using only five in any single match. Although he was the best of the group at training camp, McKenny had been losing ground steadily.&ldquo;Mind you,&rdquo; he says, &ldquo;I played right wing all last season. It&rsquo;s by no means a strange job.&rdquo;As a matter of fact, McKenny scored almost 30 goals while skating on the forward line with Leaf minor league affiliates in Rochester and Tulsa.An Ottawa boy, McKenny had decided to make this his make-or-break year with Leafs. Though he&rsquo;s only 22, he became a professional in 1966 and was growing impatient with his progress in the Toronto organization. He made it clear at the beginning of training camp in September that if he didn&rsquo;t crack Leafs National League lineup this season, he would ask to be traded to some other organization &mdash; or would abandon hockey entirely.McKenny is the first to admit he has been unsure of himself in the past, during Punch Imlach&rsquo;s regime as coach and general manager of the Toronto club.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s nothing against Imlach, but I had the feeling he didn&rsquo;t like me as a hockey player,&rdquo; McKenny says. &ldquo;Any time I was up with Leafs, I felt I&rsquo;d be gone the first time I made a mistake. And when you&rsquo;re thinking that way, you&rsquo;re in trouble.&rdquo;Imlach&rsquo;s successor, Jim Gregory, coached McKenny when both were in junior hockey with Toronto Marlbo-ros.&ldquo;Jim had me in for a talk during the summer and he told me I&rsquo;d get a good shot,&rdquo; McKenny explains.McKenny has often suffered from the classic No 2 problem that bedevilled Eric Nesterenko when he was a rookie with Leafs.Nesterenko was billed as Toronto&rsquo;s answer to Jean Beliveau, then the commanding new figure with Montreal Canadiens. This was unfair to Nesterenko, who had to move to Chicago before winning acceptance as the kind of hockey player he really is, a sound defensive workman.Similarly, McKenny was heralded as Toronto&rsquo;s Bobby Orr.&ldquo;That was absurd,&rdquo; McKenny said, &ldquo;to place me in that category.&rdquo;What the comparison did was inspire a lot of false expectations about McKenny. Certain people then regarded him, incorrectly, as a failure. Leafs Pick McKenny To Fill Army’s Spot

<div class="byline">with ED FITKIN</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-01526/2811149-1-eng-US/f0016-012.jpg" title="f0016-01" width="322" height="424"></div>SOME OF THE SALARIES being paid NHL players today make you wonder where it&rsquo;s all going to end &hellip; It also makes you think of Gordie How &hellip; For 24 years he has been plying his skills in the major league of hockey without fuss or bother &hellip; There&rsquo;s no doubt that over the years Gordie has been well paid by Detroit Red Wings but I don&rsquo;t ever recall Howe being involved in any contract hassle, any exhorbitant salary demands, any holdout threats &hellip; As a matter of fact, the only time I remember Gordie balking at anything was when the late Jack Adams, unable to get permission for Gordie to play in the Ontario Junior &lsquo;A&rsquo; league in 1945-46, decided to turn him pro and send him to Omaha &hellip; As I wrote in one of my eight hockey books, authored between 1950 and 1952, this one called Detroit&rsquo;s Big 3, Adams told me he had offered Gordie a tempting contract, but Gordie just looked at it and didn&rsquo;t say a word.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-02452/2811142-1-eng-US/f0016-022.jpg" title="f0016-02" width="559" height="583"><figcaption class="caption-body">GORDIE HOWE</figcaption></div>ADAMS WAS PUZZLED. &ldquo;What&rsquo;s the matter?&rdquo; he asked. &ldquo;Isn&rsquo;t that enough money?&rdquo; &hellip; &ldquo;The money&rsquo;s okay,&rdquo; Gordie said, and he seemed embarrassed. &ldquo;But Mr. Adams, what about that windbreaker you promised me last year?&rdquo; &hellip; With a start, Adams realized that he had made a promise to young Howe the year before to give him a Detroit windbreaker, and he realized just what Howe was thinking: Could you trust a man who didn&rsquo;t keep his promise? &hellip; Jack quickly apologized, said he had forgotten all about it&hellip; Gordie got his windbreaker and the Red Wings got a 17-year-old who not only became a star but a legend in his own time &hellip; That first contract misunderstanding was the last that I know of between Howe and Adams &hellip; Their relationship over the years was father and son &hellip; Adams, right from the beginning, proclaimed that Howe would be a superstar and the greatest player in hockey history &hellip; The Big Fella, as Jack always called him, never let him down &hellip; One of Jack&rsquo;s great predictions, made at a time when such a feat seemed impossible, was that Howe would play 20 years and score 700 goals &hellip; Howe not only proved Adams right but is now playing his 24th season and is closing in on 750 goals &hellip; He has set so many all-time marks that the NHL Record Book should be re-named the Howe Record Book.I&rsquo;VE KNOWN GORDIE since he came into the NHL. big. strong, bashful, full of fun and with a quiet philosophical strain that rather&rsquo;belied the fact that he was just 18 &hellip; The only thing that has changed in all that time is his age &hellip; He&rsquo;s still one of the most modest guys in the game, his humor and philosophies have matured, and while he isn&rsquo;t perhaps moving at quite his old speed, which never was dazzling, he still maintains that amazing puck sense to be always in the right place at the right time &hellip;He and Doug Harvey stand out in my mind as the greatest play controllers I&rsquo;ve ever seen in hockey &hellip; Now, at 41, Gordie plays you any way you want &hellip; If a rookie looking for a &ldquo;rep&rdquo; takes a reef at Howe, he can expect to get it back, only double &hellip; Howe learned a long time ago how to take care of himself. As he says: &ldquo;Hockey is a man&rsquo;s game. You&rsquo;ve got to play it like a man.&rdquo;ON HIS FIRST INVASION of Los Angeles this season, I asked him how he, personally, felt he was playing&hellip;&rdquo;Okay,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It takes me a little longer to get started. I&rsquo;m not really tramping yet.&rdquo; &hellip; The extra games, the tremendous increase in travelling, keeping himself &ldquo;up&rdquo; for games, and not being home with his wife and youngsters as much as he&rsquo;d like to be are all aspects of his chosen profession that bother him at times &hellip; But hockey is his life and he accepts the good with the bad &hellip; The worst facet of it all though is &mdash; &ldquo;I hate practicing,&rdquo; Gordie says &hellip; The night he played in LA he scored his 736th goal &hellip; It came after he had returned to action after being cut for six stitches in the first first minute of play &hellip; Prior to the game, Los Angeles goalie Gerry Desjardins&rsquo; face mask, which had been stolen three days before, was returned &hellip; Ironically, it was Gerry&rsquo;s stick that had inflicted Howe&rsquo;s cut and Gordie quipped: &ldquo;I guess I&rsquo;m the guy that should have been wearing the mask. &lsquo; &#9632;

TORONTO&mdash;Maple Leafs had been holding the team captaincy open, hoping George Armstrong would abandon retirement, return to hockey and reclaim the post. Then came the game of Oct. 22, when the club floundered aimlessly against Eastern Division opposition and wound up losing by 4-3 to PhiladelphiaFivers.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-03354/2811180-1-eng-US/f0016-032.jpg" title="f0016-03" width="256" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dave Keon</figcaption></div>Next morning, Armstrong was on the phone to general manager Jim Gregory, not to say he had decided to return but to tell him the following:&ldquo;They need a captain, Jim. You&rsquo;d better name one.&rdquo;Gregory&rsquo;s predecessor, Punch Imlach, had designated Ron Ellis as Armstrong&rsquo;s ultimate successor but the new regime, Gregory and coach Johnny McLellan, made it plain they wouldn&rsquo;t be guided by that. They contemplated the matter for a week, then announced that Keon, a 29-year-old centre starting his 10th National Hockey League season, was their new captain.&ldquo;We considered leadership qualities and Davey was the name we came up with,&rdquo; Gregory said.&ldquo;He has always been a quiet general on the ice. In his performance, he&rsquo;s always been a leader.&rdquo;Keon elaborated: &ldquo;The job is only partly in the rink. Armstrong Urged Leafs To Name Captain Fast

In the first exhibition game they sparkled in a 6-3 win over the Blues&rsquo; Kansas City farm club and scored six of the Blues&rsquo; 12 goals in the first three games.But one week before the regular season began general manager-coach Scotty Bowman cut Gray from the team and sent him to Kansas City.Bowman said, &ldquo;Sending Terry down was a hard decision to make. He&rsquo;d been playing pretty well offensively, but his defensive record had been bad.&rdquo;So, in the final exhibition game Anderson was installed at right wing with Goyette at center ana McDonald on left wing.&ldquo;Who wouldn&rsquo;t look good playing with those guys!&rdquo; Anderson said.But the 24-year-old Anderson has blended well with the two veterans, and the results have been satisfying to all three.In the first game of the season, a 7-2 thrashing of the Black Hawks, McDonald scored the winning goal on a play that demonstrated how effectively a smooth-passing line can embarrass the opposition.As if they had been playing together for five years instead of just five periods McDonald. Goyette and Anderson swooped down on Chicago goalie Ton Esposito. After the three had raced past the scattered Chicago defensemen, a series of sharp, quick passes confused Esposito sufficiently to make him motionless in the goalmouth. McDonald chipped the puck into the net.McDonald and Goyette scored goals in that game, but Anderson had not vet scored his first goal as a member of the Blues. So in the first minute of the next game McDonald stole the puck from a Los Angeles player and passed it to Goyette, who passed it to Anderson for Anderson&rsquo;s goal against his former teammates.&ldquo;What an education!&rdquo; Anderson said of his opportunity to play with Goyette and McDonald. &ldquo;This could be the best break of my career.&rdquo;McDonald, who has played for six NHL teams, was a member of Chicago&rsquo;s famed Scooter line for four years and appreciates the value of good linemates.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s better to have three doing pretty well than one guy they can key on.&rdquo; McDonald said. &#9632;

Blues’ New Hot Line Formed Late But It’s Early NHL Sensation

LONDON&mdash;TWO release cases which were on the verge of being taken to court were settled when Daniel Bouchard was released by Sorel Black Hawks of the Quebec Junior Hockey League to play with London and Mike Bloom was released by North Bay Trappers of the Northern Ontario Junior A League to join St. Catharines.Bouchard&rsquo;s father, Daniel, had hired NHL Players&rsquo; Association lawyer Alan Eagleson to handle the case when Sorel refused to release its 1968-69 goaltender. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY HANS TANNER</div>Three hundred goals is more than all but nine players have scored during their careers in the American Hockey League.So it&rsquo;s quite a feat to score 300 goals for a single team.That&rsquo;s the milestone Dick Gamble, player-coach of the Rochester Americans, reached Friday, Oct. 31, in Baltimore.When Gamble tallied the Amerks&rsquo; Ione goal in a 10-1 drubbing by the Clippers, it was the 300th time he&rsquo;s flashed the red light during regular season play for Rochester.The 41 year-old left winger joined the Americans in 196162 after having seasons of 38. 32, 31, 27 and 40 goals for the Buffalo Bisons.With Rochester, Dick has had 39, 35, 34, 48, 47, 46, 20 and 30 goals.His 300th at 6:42 of the first period in Baltimore came in his 568th game for Rochester.It was his first of the season and the 468th of his AHL career. Only Fred Glover, now the Oakland coach, with 522 and Willie Marshall, still playing with Baltimore, with 497 are ahead of Gamble on the all-time list.Dick&rsquo;s name is the record book in three places, in addition to being on the all-time lists for goal scoring, points and games played.He holds the record for the most seasons scoring 30 or more goals with 11 for the most goals scored in three successive seasons with 141 and is tied with the retired Dune Fisher for the most seasons scoring 40 or more goals with four.ICICLES &mdash; Craig Beveridge, a promising 20-year-old whom Gamble wanted to turn pro, declined the offer and is returning to Western Canada to play overage-junior in Winnipeg &hellip;Wally Sprange was returned to Nashville of the Eastern League, and Jack Chipchase was loaned to Salem, Va., of the same circuit as Gamble pared his roster ..After eight games, high-scoring Tom McCarthy, the club&rsquo;s captain this season, still was looking for his first goal of the year. So was rookie Wayne Clairmont, a 40-plus goal man for Nashville the previous five campaigns. The Barons after starting the season like gangbusters haven&rsquo;t been the same since. &ldquo;I really can&rsquo;t explain it,&rdquo; Gordon said. &ldquo;Sure we&rsquo;ve had a lot of injuries, but we&rsquo;re just not skating the way we should.&rdquo;The Barons took off on a seven-game road swing through the east atter winning two early games at home ana found the going rough. They won just one of those road outings and salvaged a come-from-behind tie in another. When they returned home to meet Hershey and Montreal, their luck didn&rsquo;t change. Again, it was basically a lack of skating.&ldquo;I guess we got out of shape on that road trip,&rdquo; Gordon added. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s hard to get ice time when you&rsquo;re traveling and we didn&rsquo;t skate enough.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-08132/2811530-1-eng-US/f0019-082.jpg" title="f0019-08" width="264" height="431"><figcaption class="caption-body">Renald LeClerc</figcaption></div>After losing to the Bears and Voyageurs, Gordon worked his club hard the next week in preparation for their current road trip &hellip; this one for six games.Meanwhile &hellip; as the Barons rest in third place in the West, onlookers are wondering when they will get untracked. Worth with the arrival of center Renald LeClerc. LeClerc, 21, replaces the injured Dick Mortenson who is out indefinitely with a dislocated wrist. LeClerc played in 43 games at Detroit last season.The Barons earlier had beefed up their pivot by acquiring Brian Lavender from Montreal. Lavender has impressed with his spark and ability to pick up the club. He is the fourth player the Barons have acquired from Montreal since last season. &#9632;

Lethargic Barons Sweat As Gordon Cracks The Whip

<div class="byline">BY CHARLEY BARTON</div>BUFFALO&mdash;Orland Kurtenbach wore a Buffalo sweater for the first time in 10 years, and his muscle and aggressiveness were evident throughout the lineup.Ten years ago, when the Bisons held simultaneous working agreements with Chicago and New York, Kurtenbach played a major role in the club&rsquo;s march to the regular-season title.Since then, the angular center has played in the National Hockey League at Boston, Toronto and New York, and has made minor league stops at Springfield, Vancouver, Boston and San Francisco.He underwent a spinal fusion a year ago, and has had some difficulty reaching top physical condition. Kurtenbach To Play Himself Into Shape With Herd

<div class="byline">BY GEORGE DUFFY</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-01268/2811599-1-eng-US/f0020-012.jpg" title="f0020-01" width="544" height="589"><figcaption class="caption-body">BOB LEDUC &hellip; Reds&rsquo; Pace Setter</figcaption></div>PROVIDENCE&mdash;Sudctnly, Bob Leduc has emerged as a genuine goal-scoring threat for the Providence Reds.In fact, the 25-year-old left wing from Sudbury, Ont., currently ranks as the team&rsquo;s No.1 offensive threat&ldquo;I can&rsquo;t really explain why it is that I&rsquo;m scoring more goals,&rdquo; the rugged 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward offered. &ldquo;All I know is that it seems as if every time I get off a halfway decent shot, the puck goes into the net.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-02193/2811592-1-eng-US/f0020-022.jpg" title="f0020-02" width="250" height="469"><figcaption class="caption-body">Joe Szura</figcaption></div>Leduc isn&rsquo;t complaining, however.Indeed, after five full seasons with the Reds, he believes he&rsquo;s entitled to a change of luck.&ldquo;I scored 43 points for this team two years ago,&rdquo; Leduc said, &ldquo;and I haven&rsquo;t been able to do better than that in the five seasons I&rsquo;ve played pro hockey.&ldquo;So, even though I&rsquo;m delighted with my fast start this fall (five goals and three assists in nine games), I can&rsquo;t help thinking I&rsquo;m entitled to a couple of breaks.&rdquo;Individual performances rank second to the team&rsquo;s welfare as far as Leduc is concerned, however, and he isn&rsquo;t pleased by the Reds&rsquo; slow start.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been hurt by injuries so far,&rdquo; Leduc explained, &ldquo;and those have slowed down our offense.&ldquo;But once Slip (center Don McKenney) and Joe (center Joe Szura) are able to go all-out, I think we&rsquo;ll begin winning our share of games.&rdquo;Leduc also said he believes the Reds have hurt themselves on several occasions by taking foolish penalties.&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve promised myself that I&rsquo;ll try and stay out of the penalty box this season,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;You can&rsquo;t score goals from the penalty box.&rdquo;That kind of thinking is relatively new to Leduc.In the past, the rugged forward always swung first and asked questions later.&ldquo;I used to have a bad temper,&rdquo; Leduc declared, smiling. &ldquo;Now that I&rsquo;m getting older, though, I can catch myself before the fuse reaches its end.&rdquo;On the other side of the coin, Leduc is known as one of the best penalty-killers in the AHL.&ldquo;He knows how to shadow the man with the puck and stay in position to intercept any bad passes,&rdquo; said Coach Dave Creighton. &#9632;

Leduc Hits Top Figures In Scoring

Indeed it may not be too long before Rodney Carl Zaine graduates to the majors.At this writing, the personable, good looking 23-year old center from Ottawa is the second leading scorer among his Clipper teammates, led only by another rookie. Ron Snell.Born and reared in Ottawa where his father Nicholas owns a small dairy products wholesale business. Zaine, who packs a solid 180 pounds of muscle on a 5-11 frame, became the property of the Clippers two years ago upon the recommendation of veteran defenseman Ian Anderson, when the two played for the champion Clinton Comets.Acting on a tip from Anderson, Baltimore general manager Terry Reardon put Zaine on his negotiation list and spent the next two years trying to turn him pro. But. it wasn&rsquo;t easy because young Rod wanted to make certain that he could make the grade by first playing with the Canadian Nationals interspersed with two winters of amateur activity in Clinton.In addition to his hockey exploits. Zaine also has certain business ambitions and to that end has furthered his education at the University of Ottawa&rsquo; where as he says, &ldquo;I need five, more credits to graduate and get a degree in business administration.&rdquo;Like most of the hockev youngsters out of Canada, Zaine began playing at a very tender age. &ldquo;I guess I started out when I was about 5 years old,&rdquo; he smiled. &ldquo;And then moved through the regular age progression including a year with the Ottawa Jr. B. Montagnardsj another season with the Oshawa Generals and two with the Ottawa Jr. A club.&rdquo;In 1966 the Clipper newcomer was attending the Canadian Nationals training camp prior to going to the Boston Bruins&rsquo; camp. However, he was also attending the University of Ottawa, and as he recalls, &ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t get a transfer from the University so I played with Clinton while I was still going to college.&rdquo;Two years later Zaine again hooked up with the Canadian Nationals and was in the world tournament at Moscow in December of last year. &ldquo;My stay in Russia was quite an experience which I wouldn&rsquo;t trade for anything. I have a great respect for their hockey teams, but after all, that&rsquo;s the only thing they do is play hockey all year long. They are great on conditioning. You know most of their players run 11 miles a day to keep their legs in shape. I&rsquo;d have to say that the Russians work more on physical conditioning than we do.&rdquo;&ldquo;Of course I was very happy to get back home. Conditions over there are very austere. They lead a very plain and simple life.&rdquo; he added.If Zaine hadn&rsquo;t made the grade in hockey, it could well be that he would have excelled in a couple of our better known American sports. He played both basketball and football at Rideau High School in Ottawa and quarterbacked the junior grid team through an undefeated and championship campaign.Although short on experience. Zaine is long on contemplating hockey&rsquo;s future.&ldquo;Two things really bug me,&rdquo; he offered brightly. &ldquo;One is, throwing pennies and other debris on the ice by the fans, and the other is that I think all players should wear helmets. I really think most guys don&rsquo;t want to wear protective headgear because it prods their vanity. But I think the day is coming when we&rsquo;ll all wear them, or at least as soon as someone invents a headiece that properly handles perspiration&rdquo; &#9632;

Rookie Rod Zaine Typical Of Clippers’ ‘New Look’

They do not see much action but their presence is important and needed on the club. Murphy and Prior suit up every game to fill these rule requirements.But they have to be sharp, they have to be ready for action and really their roles are as utility men for the Kings. They have to step in at a moment&rsquo;s notice in any position when anyone is ill or hurt.Prior and Murphy don&rsquo;t get any breaks either. They work just as hard on the ice in practice as the other fellows. It is tough staying in top playing form when you don&rsquo;t see much game action.Both are second year pros, who naturally hope in the not too distant future they will get a chance to see regular action. That&rsquo;s agony watching the other guys play hockey, as any player will testify.Prior is the little guy, only 5-9, 170 pounds who is 23 years old. He joined the Kings for a trial in 1967 and had great speed, spunk and ability. He turned pro last season after he was on the shelf the year before with the Kings due to minor injuries.In a utility role last season, Randy managed to play 51 games in his part-time job. Still his records were impressive with 17 goals and 12 assists. At Port Huron in 1967, he tallied 90 points and led the club in assists in International League play. Randy is now married and makes his home in North Bay during thn off-season.Murphy is a second year man who stands 6-2, 195 pounds and plays center. He had 14 points last season in 56 games with Springfields. He played Junior A in 1967 at London, Ont. and had 33 goals and 38 assists. He came to the Kings in a trade with Toronto.Brian is 22, was born in Toronto but lives in Scarborough, Ontario with his new bride, whom he married last spring. &#9632;

Prior, Murphy Key Men For Kings In Backup Roles

GREEN BAY&mdash;John Mayasich, general manager of the Green Bay Bobcats, has lured Pete Buchmann out of possible retirement and he will return to coach the Cats for the 1969-70 campaign.Citing the workload of his regular job, Buchmann had indicated at the close of last season that he may not be available this year.However, the former Bobcat player, after serving as assistant coach with the U.S. Nationals team in Europe last year, said he picked up some new coaching techniques and is anxious to try them out. And he has found enough free time to be able to handle the coaching chores.In three years at the reins of the Cats, Buchmann has compiled an overall 66-44-5 record including last year&rsquo;s 33-11-1 which was his finest.Mike Curran, most valuable player for the Bobcats last season, will be back on the ice for the 1969-70 campaign.Mayasich, announced the signing of the Cat goalie saying he is &ldquo;extremely happy to have Mike back in the fold after the outstanding season he had with us last year.&rdquo; &#9632;

<div class="byline">by DOUG McConnell</div>SAN DIEGO &mdash;Max McNab&rsquo;s goal is a record of less than 200 goals against for the San Diego Gulls this season.&ldquo;The closer we get to it,&rdquo; said the Gulls&rsquo; manager-coach, &ldquo;the closer we&rsquo;ll be to leading the Western Hockey League.&rdquo;New comers Gerry Odrowski and Irv Spencer and a slimmer Al Lebrun give the Gulls what McNab says &ldquo;may be the most mobile defense ever to play in the Western Hockey League. It was only the Gulls&rsquo; second defeat on home ice and their third overall of the season. They lost the league opener against Salt Lake City.&ldquo;We had several chances to win that one,&rdquo; McNab said after the second loss to Phoenix, 2-1. &ldquo;Len Ronson should have had four or five goals.&rdquo;Ronson has regained his shooting eye, in spite of it momentarily betraying him for one game. He has a total of nine goals to tie Seattle&rsquo;s Bob Courcy in that department and has two &ldquo;hat tricks&rdquo;, one of them the four-goal variety.The Gulls were still carrying 22 players, including injured center Ross Perkins as the date for unlimited lineups passed and the date for roster trimming to 16 plus two goalkeepers approached.&ldquo;I&rsquo;ll be getting down to 20&rdquo; said McNab. Perkins said his knee injury was improving and that he would be ready to play in another week.Bruce Carmichael who scored 27 goals for the Gulls last season, has been given his release and was picked up by Salt Lake City.The Phoenix Roadrunners left on their first rigid road test of the season &mdash; five games in five cities in seven days &mdash; without two old reliables.Defenseman Aut Erickson. 31, and Dick Lamoureux, 35, were in hospital for treatment of back injuries. No definite word was available on their condition but Coach Alf Pike estimated they were lost for from three to five weeks.Lamoureux&rsquo;s is a recurring back injury that has forced him to wear a corset brace for parts of the last several seasons.Erickson, who has been troubled by a bad back the past couple of years, although not to the same extent as Lamoureux, reinjured it when he was run down from behind by Howie Young at Vancouver. He played three games with it &mdash; including one on emergency recall to the Oakland Seals &mdash; but after the next practice it locked him into a position of an old lady trying to back into her favorite rocker.The Runners&rsquo; lineup is down to 17, but everyone else Is healthy.Pike was pleased after &ldquo;everyone played a great game&rdquo; in ending the San Diego Gulls&rsquo; six-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 victory on San Diego ice to open 1 he road trip.The Runners remain unbeaten on the road &mdash; two wins and two ties. It&rsquo;s far from the Phoenix club which only won four road games all last season.With Lamoureux and Erickson sidelined, there are only five players left who started the 1968-69 season with the club. Defenseman and captain Sandy Hucul is the only player left from the WHL franchise purchased from Victoria, B.C. in 1967. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JOHN WHITE</div>SALT LAKE CITY &mdash;The wise old heads around the Western Hockey League have been saying that Ray Kinasewich, coach of the new Salt Lake City Golden Eagles, can&rsquo;t win with his Kiddie Korps.They&rsquo;ve been saying he can&rsquo;t go with 21 and 22 and 23 and 24-year-old youngsters with only a season or two of experience in the Central League and whip the veteran studded lineups of the Western League.Well, after a month of action this season the Golden Eagles weren&rsquo;t exactly winning but they weren&rsquo;t exactly losing, either. After nine games they were playing .500 hockey &mdash; three victories, three defeats, three ties.It really was too early to pass judgment.For one thing, the youngsters often have the legs early while veterans are rounding into condition. This would favor Salt Lake in early-season play.For another thing, Salt Lake City had played six of its first nine games at home, losing only once. The Eagles still were looking for their first victory after three road tests.You can turn the picture around, too. As Kinasewich points out, &ldquo;Potential players with an expansion club live under much more early-season pressure than those on established clubs.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0023-0732/2811983-1-eng-US/f0023-072.jpg" title="f0023-07" width="274" height="439"><figcaption class="caption-body">Elmer Vasko</figcaption></div>&ldquo;With the training camp start, our 38 players had no job locked up. It&rsquo;s a new squad, starting from scratch. And every player has to carve his own niche on performance.&rdquo;And Kinasewich added, in commenting on a pair of ties in which the Golden Eagles blew leads, &ldquo;If you can give away goals while learning to team with each other and still tie, that isn&rsquo;t all bad.&rdquo;Kinasewich was a bit concerned with his team&rsquo;s defensive play.&ldquo;Some of our players are forgetting that hockey is a two-way game,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just as important to prevent a goal as to score one.&rdquo;&ldquo;They&rsquo;re taking too many needless and reckless chances,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;When our detensemen penetrate, then a wing should drop back to protect. There never should be four skaters deep in the attacking zone. We lust have to communicate better.&rdquo;The Golden Eagles &mdash; in the early going, at least &mdash; were making Kinasewich look good on one pre-season promise.He said he didn&rsquo;t want players who didn&rsquo;t like to mix it up, to hit, to get into the action.After seven games, the Golden Eagles were leading the Western League in major penalties, misconduct penalties and minor penalties.They had been whistled down for 136 minutes in seven games. At that rate over a full season, they would finish the campaign with more than 1,400 minutes off the ice and would break the all-time Western League record.Most teams tend to take fewer penalties, however, as the season progresses.Kinasewich certainly wasn&rsquo;t standing still, either.He added an experienced defenseman in 6-3, 230-pound Elmo (Moose) Vasko, who played with Minnesota&rsquo;s expansion team last season and who, of course, was a longtime blueliner for the Chicago Black Hawks.Despite his size, Vasko is no wildman. He&rsquo;s been called for more than 100 penalty minutes in a season only once in his professional career. &lsquo;But Salt Lake City doesn&rsquo;t need toughness as much as experience. And Vasko, once he adjusts to new partners, should help.Kinasewich also added Ray Clearwater, who was with Providence last year, on defense.Up front, he picked up a pair of potentially good ones in Dan Schock, who scored 52 points for Oklahoma City last season, and Ernie Hicke.Hicke last year was Houston&rsquo;s leading scorer with a 29-42-72 record and also led the team in penalty minutes with 146.It was a big plus, in the early going, that Salt Lake City&rsquo;s forwards were hitting. There aren&rsquo;t too many hitting forwards in the Western Hockey League, and some players believe this breed is just as important, or more so, as the hitting defenseman.Overall, Kinasewich said he was happy with the general performance of his young club &mdash; which has only three players over 28 years of age.Skating, heart and hustle are big items. And the Eagles have these.It&rsquo;s this correspondent&rsquo;s guess that Salt Lake City is going to get whacked badly a few times this season but that the Eagles are going to knock off any opponent that thinks that impressive past performances alone will awe the kids.Kids don&rsquo;t scare easily these days. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY BOB LINDLEY</div>WATERLOO&mdash;Bob Whitlock and Grant Erickson were the men most responsible for keeping the Iowa Stars in the thick of contention through the first nine games of the season, each puncturing enemy nets for five goals in that span.Erickson, of course, was expected to provide the Stars with a potent offensive punch, coming off a great 196869 campaign at Oklahoma City where he tallied 28 goals and added 37 assists in 64 games, then added three goals and two assists in just four playoff games.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0024-01140/2812122-1-eng-US/f0024-012.jpg" title="f0024-01" width="271" height="439"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jack Egers</figcaption></div>But Whitlock may be the discovery of the year for the Stars, who got him for the proverbial &ldquo;song.&rdquo;&ldquo;He was completely overlooked in the draft,&rdquo; general manager John Muckier says of the 20-year-old rookie, &ldquo;and we signed him as a free agent. He didn&rsquo;t cost us a dime.&rdquo;The Stars ran into injury problems as veteran Dick Sentez suffered a fractured wrist and will be sidelined for about six weeks and promising rookie Rick Dudley also went out with an injury.The Stars also said goodbye &mdash; hopefully only for a short time&mdash; to defenseman Dick Redmond, whom Muckier called the best prospect he&rsquo;d seen in years. Redmond was called up to the parent Minnesota club to fill in for injured Barry Gibbs.It appears Redmond won&rsquo;t return for some time. Veteran Leo Boivin came up with a broken ankle and the North Stars quickly summoned Tom Reid from Iowa as a stop-gap replacement. However, Reid is likely to come back as soon as Gibbs gets the medical OK to play. He is skating again.Muckier sung the praises of goalie Gilles Gilbert, who in eight games had allowed only 21 goals for a 2.6 average, including one of the two shutouts posted in the CHL through the first 28 games.FORT WORTH&mdash;Rene Leclerc was lifted off the Wings&rsquo; roster after 10 games and reassigned to the Cleveland Barons of the American League. The sophomore pro had played in eight games for Fort Worth with one goal and two assists. Defenseman Kerry Ketter suffered torn knee ligaments and will be sidelined for a spell. The big defenseman had scored two goals and had two assists in 10 games before being hurt.OKLAHOMA CITY&mdash;Steve Atkinson was taking up where he left off last season when he pierced opposing goaltenders for 40 goals. The thin speedster had eight goals through Oklahoma City&rsquo;s first seven games, including a three-goal hat trick against Kansas City. Rookie Don Tanna-hill had five goals and six assists and Tom Webster and Jim Adair followed with three goals each. Defenseman Nick Beverly suffered an eye injury and is expected to miss a couple of weeks. Rookie goalie John Adams had played in all but two periods of the first seven games and had a 3.0 goal-against average.DALLAS&mdash;Bobby Kromm, an old hand at booting home a winner after a slow break from the gate, was still looking for scoring power as his club managed only 12 goals through the first six games. Veteran J.P. LeBlanc had one-third of them while rookie Larry Romanchych and veteran Jim Stanfield each had a pair. The Hawks were still awaiting word from Chicago on possible help on the defense, which is probably the league&rsquo;s most experienced with Jim Graham, Barry Long, Paul Shmyr and Kerrv Bond.KANSAS CITY&mdash;The Blues were toting around more players than they could handle and coach Fred Hucul said it was going to be tough to choose which go and which stay. The recent addition of forward Ron Buchanan from St. Louis of the NHL and defenseman Jim Pritchard increased the roster to 20. including 14 who have pro experience. &ldquo;Someone has to go,&rdquo; Hucul said, &ldquo;and there&rsquo;s a chance some of the kids will beat veterans out of a iob.&rdquo;OMAHA&mdash;Jack Egers, nicknamed &ldquo;Smokey&rdquo; by his teammates because of his blistering shot, was burning holes in enemy cages for the Knights, grabbing lhe CHL scoring lead through nine games with six goals and 11 assists. Egers scored 28 goals in 59 games last season and appears headed for an even better mark this year, thanks to linemates Jack Luce and rookie Dennis Dupere. Luce (22 goals last year) had three tallies and 11 assists and Dupere had added six goals and five assists, making it one of the deadliest lines in the league. Andre &ldquo;Moose&rdquo; Dupont, the club policeman had compiled 61 minutes in penalty time in nine games.TULSA&mdash;Overstocking was a problem with the Oilers and GM Ray Miron was sitting with eraser poised over the roster preparing to delete names. Youngster Jim Blain had already been assigned to the player pool and Miron said at least one more might join him. The Oilers were also in hopes Toronto would spring Ron Ward loose from the Maple Leaf roster and send the 1967-68 CHL scoring champ (31 goals, 54 assists) back to Tulsa where offense has been a major problem. Danny Johnson and Len Bazay were carrying the brunt of the offense while coach Marcel Pronovost was looking for a more balanced attack. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY HARVEY POLLACK</div>GREENSBORO &mdash;There are two Roger Wilsons playing in the Eastern Hockey League, but as far as foes of the two are concerned only the one cavorting at defense for the Greensboro Generals is a problem.The other Roger Wilson is the goalie for the Charlotte Checkers and he doesn&rsquo;t body check you like the Roger Wilson of Greensboro.Roger didn&rsquo;t even figure in Greensboro&rsquo;s plans for this year. He had told the club that he wanted to continue his education and thus turned down a chance to plav for Dallas of the Central League. He was playing college hockey for Laurentian University in Sudbury, but the lack of aggressive hockey made him pine for the EHL. So he doffed his educational ambitions and returned to the Gens.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0025-109/2812389-1-eng-US/f0025-102.jpg" title="f0025-10" width="265" height="448"><figcaption class="caption-body">Roger Wilson</figcaption></div>In his very first game, the 220-pound defenseman made his presence known. Ten seconds after getting on the ice he checked Salem&rsquo;s Don Rozich against the boards and that set the tempo for the whole evening. Since then, he has been doing the same thing as he gave the club the hard-checking &lsquo;policeman&rsquo; it lacked.Though he played two previous seasons for the Gens, he often acted timid on the ice. But he&rsquo;s changed now and his explanation for the change: &ldquo;Confidence. I feel like I know hockey better this season. 1 know when to hit now. And I&rsquo;ve learned how to stay up better on my skates.&rdquo;Coach Ron Spong believes Roger can be the leader of the club and it&rsquo;s apparent that the club&rsquo;s forwards aren&rsquo;t backing away from anyone. Long time observers can&rsquo;t remember when so many hat tricks were registered in the early weeks of the season.Not only have the traditional three goals been racked up with great frequency but there were a couple of &ldquo;Texas hats&rdquo; &mdash; the four goal achievement&mdash; in the early games.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0026-0824/2812538-1-eng-US/f0026-082.jpg" title="f0026-08" width="268" height="445"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ted Garvin</figcaption></div>The players who got their names on the four-goal honor roll early in the season were Hugh Harris, veteran of the Muskegon Mohawks and Doug Abel, rookie of the Flint Generals.Among those who were credited with &ldquo;hats&rdquo; of the three-goal variety were Garry MacMillan and Tom Iannone of Dayton, Moe Morissette and Cliff Pennington of Des Moines, Bert Fizzell of Columbus Gary Ford of Muskegon and Wayne Zuk of Toledo.Although the hat tricks appeared to be more numerous than ever, it was no indication that the goalies were not doing a good job. In Des Moines, where Gaye Cooley registered the season&rsquo;s first shutout, the Oak Leaf goalie complained, jestingly, that goal-tenders are being discriminated against in the awards. Hat tricks enriched a player with a Joe Namtha-style Alaskan Borg fur coat. A shutout by a goalie wins a pair of slacks. &ldquo;Hey, how come I don&rsquo;t get a fur coat? That&rsquo;s not fair&rdquo;,&rsquo;yelled Coolev.PORT HURON&mdash;Ted Garvin, Flags&rsquo; coach, fined all of his players $50 each after a loss at Toledo, saying, &ldquo;Some of these guys think the only place they have to play is at home. I want guys who will play on the road, too&rdquo; &hellip;The Flags protested Des Moines use of Dave Simpson, who was signed earlier by the Flags, joined the Pittsburgh Penguins and later regained amateur status. CATHARINES&mdash;Security has never been one of the benefits of coaching in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A League.Because of the age limit there is always a large turn-over of players but the coaches often don&rsquo;t stick around any longer than the teen-agers.This year seemed to be an exception to the usual rule when only one change was made before the start of the schedule &mdash; Kitchener School teacher Gerry Forler coming in to replace Dave Weber with the Rangers.A year earlier, exactly half the 10 teams had new men handling the coaching duties.However the 1969-70 schedule was only one month old when Gene Taylor handed in his resignation in London.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0027-0730/2812736-1-eng-US/f0027-072.jpg" title="f0027-07" width="274" height="429"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gus Bodnar</figcaption></div>Taylor made the unique move of stepping up from trainer to coach two years ago replacing former National Hockey League all-star goaltender, Turk Broda, now in charge of the American Hockey League Quebec Aces.However, Taylor found the pressure of handling the teenagers created many problems. It was just a little too much and he resigned in favor of Armand (Bep) Guidolin.Not only were the London Knights losing hockey games but Taylor had been subjected to obscene phone calls from over-wrought fans and decided to call it quits.Guidolin, who will be 44 next month, played in the National Hockey League with Boston, Detroit and Chicago with time out for one year of active duty with the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II.With Guidolin at the helm London promptly took three of its next four points, winning 6-4 in Niagara Falls, then playing to a 3-3 tie on home ice with Ottawa &lsquo;67s.The win and draw enabled them to escape last place in the 10-team circuit for the first time this season.At the other end of the league Toronto Marlboros continued to destroy most opposition, defeating London 7-4 just hours before Taylor announced his resignation, then beating Peterborough 5-2 to run their win streak to seven games.Coach Gus Bodnar, like Guidolin a former National Hockey League player, credited much of the early-season success to his defense.As veteran Toronto junior hockey writer Frank Orr pointed out in a recent story, the Marlboros have always specialized in king-sized defensemen but this season they have perhaps the largest in club history.Steve Durbano weighs in at 200 pounds, Steve Cuddie 195, Charlie Shaw 190. Fred Barrett and Mike Amodeo are the smallest at 185 pounds.Durbano in particular is playing improved hockey over his first two years in junior A.Rather than attempting to intimidate the opposition he has developed his defensive skills and is now rated as an outstanding candidate for professional hockey.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s sticking to hockey&rdquo;, said Bodnar, a former rookie of the year in the NHL. &ldquo;We keep detailed records of which players are on the ice when the opposing team scores and Durbano leads the list by a good margin.&rdquo;St. Catharines Black Hawks have put together the second best win streak this season with five in a row after winning only one of their first six games.Last year the Hawks also started slowly but finished as runners-up to Montreal Canadiens both in the regular schedule and the playoffs.The disappointment so far has been the play of Hamilton Red Wings.Generally considered a distinct threat for the championship with a dozen returning players including top defenseman Gary Geldart and an outstanding forward line of Buster Harvey, Ron Climie and Dave Gilmour, the Wings won only one of their first 10 games.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0027-0828/2812729-1-eng-US/f0027-082.jpg" title="f0027-08" width="550" height="565"><figcaption class="caption-body">STEVE DURBANO &hellip;Improves Ice Image</figcaption></div> &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY GLENN REDMANN</div>TWIN CITIES&mdash;There are a good many longtime observers of the world&rsquo;s fastest sport in this neck of the woods who believe that Cesare Maniasro hasn&rsquo;t been siven near the recognition he deserves as one of the NHL&rsquo;s top goalkeepers.It&rsquo;s true that the rangy veteran hasn&rsquo;t come close to matching the two-season statistics of such worthies as Ed Giacomin. Glenn Hall, Bernie Parent, Gump Worsley, Gerry Cheevers and Bruce Gamble since major league expansion.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0028-01103/2812847-1-eng-US/f0028-012.jpg" title="f0028-01" width="272" height="461"><figcaption class="caption-body">John Miszuk</figcaption></div>But Maniago&rsquo;s boosters argue that the others haven&rsquo;t had to put up with as porous a defense, either.&ldquo;I would venture to say that Cesare saw more 2-on-l and 3-on-2 breaks in the North Stars&rsquo; first two seasons,&rdquo; said Don (Pix) Anderson, a one-time University of Minnesota goalie, &ldquo;than all of the East Division goal tenders combined.&ldquo;With the protection Cesare received, he&rsquo;d have been justified suing his teammates for nonsupport.&rdquo;Having played in the Gopher nets for both good and below-average teams in the 1940s. Anderson, a wealthy, retired pharmacist, knows what it means to a netminder to get ample protection.And, after watching the 30-year-old Maniago perform admirably in three of the North Stars&rsquo; first four home games of the 1969-70 season, Anderson made this observation:&ldquo;It seems as though the big guy is finally getting some of the backchecking that was lacking so much in the first two years when they nearly worked him to death.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m real happy for him, because if this protection keeps up. he&rsquo;ll have a real good shot at getting his goals against average back under three where it was two years ago.&rdquo;Maniago, who matched his 1968-69 shutout total of one (he had six in 1967-68) in this season&rsquo;s season opener against Philadelphia, calls this the best North Star team he has played on.&ldquo;We have a lot of hustle and desire,&rdquo; he said after sparking the Minnesotans to a 4-1 victory over Montreal, &ldquo;and this is most important for a winning club.&rdquo;The soft-spoken nine-year pro credits the Stars&rsquo; new style of having &ldquo;our forwards stick with their wings and play a strong forechecking game&rdquo; for being instrumental in his personal earlv-season successes.The come-from-behind triumph over the Stanley Cup champion Canadiens was followed by a pair of disappointing losses on the road to Pittsburgh (6-3 with Ken Broderick in the nets) and Philadelphia (6-2 against Maniago), but the club&rsquo;s spirits weren&rsquo;t dampened.Manager-Coach Wren Blair pointed to the loss of rookie defenseman Barry Gibbs (for more than two weeks with a severe charlev horse) as one of the main reasons for the temporary collapse.&ldquo;They say one man shouldn&rsquo;t make that much difference,&rdquo; said Blair, &ldquo;but I have to disagree inasmuch as you&rsquo;re talking about 25 per cent of our blue-line when you don&rsquo;t have a guy like Gibbs.&rdquo;On the shiny side of the ledger, there were others off to fast starts &mdash; like Danny Grant and Bill&rsquo; Goldsworthy up front &mdash; and exFlyer John Miszuk, who performed superbly in the Montreal win.Grant notched a goal in six straight games to set a West Division record previously held by Red Berenson and Andy Bathgate (five games) and Goldsworthy had four goals and was playing strong, two-way hockey.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0028-0250/2812840-1-eng-US/f0028-022.jpg" title="f0028-02" width="568" height="874"><figcaption class="caption-body">CESARE MANIAGO &hellip; HoroMnwnt Over</figcaption></div> &#9632;

North Stars Finally Giving Maniago Lona-Awaited Defensive Protection
