Extra Heavy Road Log, Injuries Hamper Barons In Early League Play
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Barons face the rather unpleasant task of playing 13 of their first 19 games on the road. Always tough on their home ice, Coach Jack Gordon’s icers must prove their ability to get points away from home during the early going. Signs during the club’s first six away games were not especially encouraging. The Barons took defeats at Montreal, Quebec, Springfield and Hershey while managing a come-from-behind tie in a second outing against the Aces in Quebec City. The lone win was a sparkling 4-0 shutout of the Reds at Providence with rookie Gerry Gray in goal. The Barons, however, don’t believe that record is a true indication of their ability. Winger Wayne Schultz has a fractured wrist and is yet to see action this season. Defenseman Jim Nie-kamp…

Prentice Fires 300th NHL Goal As Penguins Pull Off Few Surprises
PITTSBURGH— The Pittsburgh Penguins returned from the first road trip with their first victory of the season, but they are still beginning to make an impression around the National Hockey League. “We’re not endowed with a lot of great hockey players,” General Manager Jack Riley said before the season opened. “But we have more depth and we’ll have some surprises.” The Penguins have shown just that m their first seven games. The only team in the West Division (the NHL) never to make the playoffs, the Penguins are displaying suprisingly well-rounded scoring punch. The line of Dean Prentice, Ron Schock and Nick Harbaruk lead the team’s scoring with 12 points. And all three are new faces in Pittsburgh. Prentice, a 34-year-old veteran left winger who was picked up in the league draft from Detroit, has scored…

IHL Teams Still Buying And Selling, Gems Land Staub, Flags Secure Brewer
FORT WAYNE — Although the season was well under way, some of the International Hockey League teams were still doing some wheeling and dealing within the league in an effort to bolster weaknesses that I had developed in the early play. Probably the most important was the purchase of veteran forward Bill Staub from Columbus by the Dayton Gems, who already appeared loaded with enough talent to make them favorites to repeat as champions. Staub, who is 28, played with Columbus at the start of last season and then was sent to Fort Wayne on a loan exchange for goalie Gerry Randall. With Randall’s retirement before the season opened Staub reverted to the Checkers. He finished 16th in league scoring, with 31 goals and 76 points. “Bill should beef up our attack,” said Gems’ coach…

IN THIS ISSUE
In today’s game, this young man handed out five stiff body checks, blocked two slapshots from the point, was boarded by a big right winger, caught an elbow while digging the puck out of the corner, was flattened trying to clear the puck, and picked up an assist on a goal. He played a good game. He played it hard. But most important, he’s still in one piece. That’s the part we played in today’s game. Cooper Hockey Equipment Don’t play games with anything else.…
