Roadrunners Pull New Season Switch, They Win On Rond But Lose At Home

PHOENIX — After having defenseman Aut Erickson and goaltender Rick Charron run down from behind and knocked unconscious in Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum, the Roadrumners returned to home ice with 9,738 fans watching and waiting for revenge. Charron cut Young’s feet out from under him with a twohanded swing of his big blade after just two minutes of play and the Runners generally roughed up the Canucks. But Marc Reaume scored the game opener as Pheonix was shorthanded, due to Charron’s penalty and Vancouver went on to a 3-2 victory. The Runners, almost unbeatable on home ice until they fell apart completely, midway last season, have only won one of four home starts. They defeated Salt Lake City 7-3 but lost 5-3 to Portland and tied San Diego 3-3. Completing the switch-around, the Runners are…

Lacroix’s Scoring Exploits Give Flyers Lift, Stasiuk First Win

PHILADELPHIA— Coach Vic Stasiuk could be excused for singing Christmas carols a bit early this year. It would simply be the Flyer coach’s, reaction to Andre Lacroix’s surprising reversal of form which has made the club’s prospects exceedingly bright. Lacroix, a notoriously slow starter every season until finally getting unt racked around Christmas, scored the three goal hat trick against the Maple Leafs in Toronto and triggered Stasiuk’s first victory as an NHL coach. The very next night,, against the Detroit Red Wings in the Spectrum, Lacroix again stood out and scored a goal in the Flyers’ 2-2 tie, It meant that, on two consecutive nights, Andre was named the game’s No. 1 star. “I was glad about my goals, sure,” said Andre. “But I was even more happy that they helped us win…

Hot Goaler Gerry Desjardins Bulwarks Uncertain Defense Setup Of L.A. Kings

LOS ANGELES— Following three straight decisive defeats on the road to open the season, the Los Angeles Kings returned home to win two in a row before losing again, this time to the powerful Boston Bruins. Both of their victories were shutouts, 5-0 over Oakland and 2-0 over Pittsburgh, both scored by Gerry Desjardins, who ran his streak of scoreless minutes to 138 before he was beaten midway in the first period of a 3-2 loss to Boston. Last season, Desjardins scored four shutouts, including two in a row, which contributed to a string of 142 consecutive minutes before he was again beaten. Because of a groin injury to Wayne Rutledge and a lack of an adequate replacement, Desjardins had to play 60 games last season, his rookie season, including 30 in a row.…

Kromm Not Pushing Panic Button Over Chumpion Hu wks Siow Start

DALLAS— If the agonizingly slow start of the Black Hawks has coach Bobby Kromm worried, the fiery Dallas leader shows nary a sign of it. After all. avalanches start with snowballs and forest fires begin with a tiny spark, and Kromm can look back on last season when the Hawks stumbled around to a 1-6 record before righting themselves and charging all the way to the Central League championship. “Naturally I’m disappointed that we lost our home opener.” Kromm says, “but we did last year, too. and we came out on top. “Even though our record doesn’t indicate it. we re in better shape at this stage of the season than we were in the past two years. “Our problem now is depth, especially at defense where we’ve only got four players. But we’re execting help…
