Cup Winning Bears Could Be Hard Hit By Draft Pickings
HERSHEY. Pa.— Like drones, the National Hockey League scouts buzzed around the Hershey Bears in their successful flight to the Calder Cup championship. It was quite an upset for coach Frank Mathers’ Pennsylvania-based outfit in collecting the Cup for the fourth time in 31 years and the first in the last ten American League seasons. Everyone had tabbed the regular season champion Buffalo Bisons, who made a runaway of the 74-game schedule, to snare the Cup. But Mathers’ “roughriders” has different ideas, polishing off the Bisons in a halfdozen games, and then wrapping up the finals in five matches against the game, but out-classed Aces from Quebec. DeLise, Perry Eye ‘71 Berth In AHL With New Haven
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Jerry DeLise, chairman of the board and general manager of the Muskegon Mohawks of the International Hockey League and Don Perry, coach of the New Haven Blades of the Eastern Hockey League, have joined forces and made a formal application for a New Haven franchise in the American Hockey League. Ground was recently broken and construction started on a new arena which will be known as the New Haven Coliseum and will be in operation by November, 1971. DeLise and Perry plan to have their AHL club ready for the 1971-72 American Hockey League season. DeLise has spent considerable time with Jack Butterfield, president of the AHL, outlining his plans for the franchise.
