Nashville Banking Hopes For Title On Solid Defense Against Clinton
NASHVILLE. Tenn. — The Nashville Dixie Flyers won’t be able to match the fabulous record of their 1966 counterpart but they still have high hopes of capturing the Eastern Hockey League crown due to the brilliant play of a peerless defense corps. Lloyd Hinchberger’s team had aspired to equal the 1966 team’s feat of winning 11 straight games in playoff competition without a defeat. The streak reached eight this year before the Clinton Comets won the second game of their series to end the string and bring the Flyers out of the clouds. Hinchgerger, though disappointed by that defeat, still felt that his team would emerge victorious since they had wiped out Clinton’s home ice advantage by taking the series opener in overtime. Three Players Returned To First IHL All-Stars
TOLEDO, O. — The International Hockey League’s All-Star team, announced by Commissioner Andy Mulligan, showed three repeaters from the selections of last season. They were Don Westbrooke of Dayton at right wing, Jack Turner of Columbus on defense and Glenn Ramsay of Toledo in goal. It was the eighth time that Ramsay had been named All-Star goalie, despite the fact that he missed many weeks of play because of a knee iniury. Westbrooke was named winner of the James Gatschene Trophy, awarded tor playing abilitv and sportsmanship. Ted Garvin, new coach of the Port Huron Flags, was named “Coach of the Year” and Doug Volmar, sensational rookie of the Columbus Checkers, with a first-year output of 63 goals, was voted “Rookie of the Year.” Of the total of 14 players cited for All-Star honors,…


NHL Player Of The Week
Ted Irvine was picked off by the Los Angeles Kings for NHL expansion primarily because he had a reputation of being a scorer in the Boston organization. The Kings have been waiting patiently for Irvine to come through this season and now it appears their patience wasn’t in vain. Irvine produced big this past week to push the Kings into the Western Division finals against St. Louis Blues. Irvine had a goal and an assist in the Kings’ 4-3 win against Oakland and when the series went down to a ‘showdown’ seventh game, Irvine responsed with two goals and the Kings picked up the momentum to oust Oakland and go on to face the Blues.
