Slater To Quit Dual Toledo Roles; Blades, Checkers Limp Into Playoffs

TOLEDO. O. — On the eve of the International Hockey League playoffs, Terry Slater, volatile and unpredictable coach and general manager of the Toledo Blades, announced that he planned to give up both positions at the close of the season. Slater, 30 years of age, has held the dual position for the last three seasons. Before that he coached for a year at the University of Toledo and played with the Blades. Slater’s plans for the future were indefinite but he declared, “I have accomplished what I wanted to accomplish in Toledo. Hockey here is on a much sounder basis financially than it was when I took over. In fact we have cut losses by more than $80,000. The time has come for me to move on, I don’t want hockey to die…

Hershey, Buffalo Players Dominate Poll

HARRISBURG, Pa.— The Hershey Bears and Buffalo Bisons dominated the 17th annual American Hockey League all-star teams selected by the eight league coaches for the Patriot News and THE HOCKEY NEWS. The Western Division champion Bisons had three players named to the first team as did the Eastern Division kingpin Bears. Buffalo skaters picked were goalie Gil Villemure, defenseman Bob Blackburn, and right winger Guy Trottier, the league’s top goal sniper. For the Bears it was defenseman Ralph Keller, center Gil Gilbert and left winger Michel Harvey, who have staged a head-to-head duel for the scoring championship. Five points were given for a first team vote; three for second. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players in team balloting as the club’s are allopponent choices.
