Henderson’s Sparkling Net Play May Warrant Another NHL’Look’

HERSHEY, Pa.— It wouldn’t be surprising if National League scouts take another long hard look at John Henderson, one of the classiest goalies in minor league ranks today. The 6’5” Hershey Bears’ netminder—rangiest in the sport—is having one of his finest seasons since turning pro 16 years ago. In 28 games, two of which he turned in a short relief stint, Henderson has allowed only 69 goals, posted one shutout, made 791 saves for a fancy 2.65 average, second best in the eight-team American League. He has backstopped the Bears to 15 wins and three ties, while losing only eight for 33 of a possible 52 points. Reds’ $1,500,000 Sale Hinges On City Constructing New Arena

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Reds of the American Hockey League have a new owner but the sale of the club is contingent upon the construction of a new rink. George M. Sage, president of the Short Line Inc., bus company of Providence disclosed that he and his business partners had purchased the franchise of the Reds and the aging Rhode Island Auditorium for a price of $1,500,000. Sage added that the sale to his corporation is based on a pledge by the City of Providence to build a new sports arena to serve as the AHL club’s home rink. The president and owner of the Reds Lou Pieri, said that the sale of the club included all the team’s assets but did not elaborate on what it entailed. Providence Mayor Joseph Doorley Jr., announced…

Hockey Ad Lib

A Few Of Hockey’s Faithful • A KIND LADY wrote recently, praising our writing in passing, but objecting to our description of some fans in a recent story on a player’s wife. Some are as these were, but there are others, and, as she suggests we do, we want to mention a few. One such is Shelly Manne, not only the greatest jazz drummer of all time, but one of the rarest of jazz musicians—one who gets by financially. Shelly, who lives with his wife on a ranch in Northridge, where they train show horses, has a successful club, Shelly’s Manne Hole in Hollywood, and is one of the most successful studio musicians anywhere. But he turns down studio jobs on home hockey nights. Not many jazzmen are hockey fans, but…
