Turlik, Croteau Rated Top Freshmen

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Any professional hockey club considers itself fortunate in a given season to have even a single contender on its team who might qualify for “Rookie of the Year” honors. The Springfield Kings are lucky. They have two. In an otherwise so-so season, which has seen the Kings laboring hard but not making much headway, both Ken Turlik and Gary Croteau have certainly been pleasant surprises on the local scene. “Both have exceeded all expectations,” Coach John Wilson stated. “They should certainly be battling it out right to the end of the season for rookie honors. Cournoyer Refuses To Set Scoring Target

He has improved production every one of his five seasons in the NHL from seven goals in 55 games of 1964-65 to totals of 18, 25, 28 and whatever he accumulates this season. With more than 20 games left to play, Cournoyer has jumped the 30 goal mark to battle Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito and Frank Mahovlich for the…

Detroit Chattels Mortenson, Hart Impress

BALTIMORE, Md. — Two twenty year old youngsters in the Detroit Red Wings organization are doing their part to help Baltimore Clippers coach Aldo Guido-lin get his normal eight hours sleep these days. Since the addition of defenseman Gerry Hart and left winger Dick Mortenson, the Clippers have come on like gangbusters the last few weeks and are making a legitimate run at Hershey’s eastern division leading Bears. “Both of these boys have showed me something, “Guidolin enthuses, “and you can bet they are a welcome addition to our club. Terry (Reardon-GM) and I have long felt that if we could get a few youngsters with young, fast legs to blend with the older but more experienced skaters like Willie Marshall, Jim Morrison, Jean-Marie Cossette, Keke Mortson, Ed MacQueen and others, that we…
