Trained Reds for 40 Years, George Army Dies Age 69
PROVIDENCE. R.I. — George Army, who left a professional baseball career behind him to become trainer of the Rhode Island Reds 40 years ago. died last week here after becoming a legend among fans in this city. Many of today’s pro hockey players, strung out in the various leagues across the United States and Canada, were handled and treat ed by Army in a career with the Reds which began in 19.30 and just kept going on while he was winning the reputation as one of the finest trainers in sports. George had been ailing since an operation last summer but he never lost his spirit for the Reds. Until five days before he passed away at his home, he was treating injured members of the current Reds right in his home, only…

NHL Player Of The Week — IN THE WEST
With St. Louis Blues continuing to run away with the Western Division title, some fans might tend to overlook the most successful week in the two-year history of the Los Angeles Kings and their star sniper Billy “Cowboy” Flett. Flett was the chief Kings’ cannon as he rammed home two goals to spark a 3-1 win over the Rangers. He added two more as LA capped off the week with a 4-0 triumph over Pittsburgh Penguins. Flett’s latest splurge gives him a total of 14 goals for the season after scoring came difficult for…

Veteran Horton Finally Gets Recognition As Top Rearguard
TORONTO, Ont.— Recognition has been a long time coming but now at last, Tim Horton of the Maple Leafs is accepted everywhere as one of the three or four best defensemen in the National Hockey League. In midseason all-star voting he was second only to Boston Bruins’ Bobby Orr among eastern division rearguards. Horton celebrated his 39th birthday Jan. 12, an open day in Leafs’ schedule following a 4-2 conquest of Los Angeles Kings. As usual, Horton played solidly and consistently as befits the only experienced hand among Toronto’s defence regulars. The other three are rookies — Horton’s partner, Pat Quinn, and the other pair, Jim Dorey and Mike Pelyk. Leafs also have veterans Pierre Pilote and Marcel Pronovost. Pilote has seen very little ice time except for point duty on the power…
