Penalty Killing Ace, Fonteyne Finds Range As Goal Scorer, Too
PITTSBURGH, Pa,— He’s 35 years old and for a hockey player that’s old, indeed. He’s been around the National Hockey League for almost ten years and really doesn’t have to prove himself. Yet, Val Fonteyne of the Pittsburgh Penguins is hustling this season as he never did before. Maybe his legs aren’t what they used to be. And mavbe he doesn’t have the reactions that helped him break into the NHL at Detroit in 1959. But you’d never know it by watching him kill penalties for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Then, you’ll see him whizzing around the ice like a youngster — making a tricky manuever every so often as he cuts and fakes to gain time while a teammate sits in the penalty box. Western, Quebec Oldtimers Split
MONTREAL, Que.— National League Oldtimers rolled back the hockey clock the weekend of Jan. 17-19 to provide a little nostalgia of how the game was played some 10 to 20 years ago. The Western Oldtimers turned back the Quebec selects 5-3 here in Montreal before nearly 6,000 Forum fans Jan. 19 to vindicate themselves after losing 7-6 on their Winnipeg home ice Friday, Jan. 17 to the Quebecers, made up mostly of former stars of the Montreal Canadians.
