NHL Player Of The Week — IN THE WEST

Throughout much of the current season. National Hockey League fans laughed at the Pittsburgh Penguins: They aren’t laughing any more. From the so-called “worst team in the NHL” the Penguins have suddenly become one of the most proficient clubs in the Western Division. And the man who has made them tick is fiery Lou Angotti. Angotti was a key man for the Penguins last week as the team went on an undefeated four-game tear. It started with a 3-3 tie against Toronto Wednesday, bloomed into a 3-2 victory over Chicago Thursday, and ended up with a 4-2 triumph over Los Angeles Kings and a 4-4 tie with Oakland Seals on the weekend. RookieDuo Pulls Bears Out Of Tailspin

HERSHEY. Pa. — A couple of classy-looking rookies, Garnet (Ace) Bailey and Wayne Cashman, finally brought the Hershey Bears out of a prolonged tailspin. After winning seven of the first eight games in the American League, Hershey went through the next six (Oct. 6 — Nov. 22) with only a win and a tie to show for its efforts. But on Nov. 23 with a near capacity crowd at the 7200-seat Sports Arena, Bailey rapped in a pair and Cashman another in the final period against the Springfield Kings for a 4-1 victory, ending a four-game non-win streak. MEET THE ROOKIES

People joke about Bobby Schmautz’s name but the Chicago Black Hawks’ rookie star figures he can have the last laugh if he makes it big with the NHL club. Schmautz, who is 23, played 13 games with the Hawks last year on right wing with the Bobby Hull line, he impressed with his desire and hustle. Bob got-25 goals at Dallas last year before coming up to the Hawks. He almost got away from the Hawks, who had strings on him when they had a working agreement with Los Angeles Blades before that territory became part of the NHL.
