HALIFAX, N.S. — The search for a fourth team to replace Fredericton Blues in the Maritime-Junior A Hockey League foundered after Dartmouth Bucaneers opted to remain in the Nova Scotia Metro-Valley “B” League for this season at least. But according to Dartmouth officials Jim Trainor and Dr. J.F. Cantwell, the Bucs will make formal application to move up in the 1969-70 season. Meanwhile. Phoenix Roadrunners Surprising WHL After Being Written Off By Experts
PHOENIX, Ariz.— As the end of the training camps a p proached, the Phoenix Roadrunners were the talk of the Western Hockey League. When the championship chances of the six clubs were discussed, everyone mentioned Phoenix, sometimes for as long as four of five seconds. “Lost three of their four best scorers and didn’t replace them” … “weakest team in the league down the middle” … “only club in the Western League that didn’t improve” … These were typical of comments. The ‘Runners were dismissed as out of it. But in the first few weeks of the campaign, strange things started to happen. Back to Phoenix came big center Walt McKechnie, rookie of the year in the WHL last season. Gerry Meehan, a 6-2, 200-pounder who sizzled with 72 points (31 goals) at Tulsa…
Gulls’ O’Ree Maintaining Goal-a-game Pace In WHL
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego Gulls didn’t have major problems last season on home ice before those record-breaking 311,857 fans. They won 22, lost 13, tied 1. Road games kept the Gulls from championship contention — just 9 victories in 36 clashes away from home. The Gulls apparently plan to change that. They won four of their first five games away from home during the current campaign. Just for comparison, the Gulls won their fourth road game last year on February 4 — the fifth month of the hockey season. As the Gulls blasted away in first place with six victories in their first seven starts, a pair of front-liners were setting what may be personal records for breaking from the barrier. Fleet winger Willie O’Ree sniped seven goals in seven games. He scored…
