Seals’ Listless Start Jolts Glover After Club’s Unbeaten Exhibition Run

OAKLAND, Calf.— Excedrin Headache No. 422 — “The Exhibition Season was great, but what happened when the Regular Season opened?” That’s coach Fred Glover’s problem after the momentum of a super eight-game undefeated string in training camp faded badly when they dropped the puck for points. For five periods when it counted most, the “new look” Seals looked strangely like the old Seals who finished last in NHL play last year. In the season opener, the Seals were whammed by Wren Blair’s power-packed Minnesota North Stars, 5-1, and although there were some moments of decent play, the Seals were never really in the game. And then for two periods against the Los Angeles Kings, the Seals fussed and fidgeted some more, making more bad plays than they had during the entire training camp. But in that…

Nevin Turns Sizzling Scorer But Boomer’s Garden Debut Ruined By Windy City Hawks

NEW YORK, N.Y.— Last season, the New York Rangers opened their campaign at Chicago with a 6-3 victory over the Hawks — and unfortunately they closed it at Chicago with a 4-1 loss. This time at Chicago the New Yorkers lost 5-2, which demonstrated to one and all, including Coach Geoffrion that the Hawks seemingly still had the Blueshirts’ number. The opening night loss made five straight defeats at the hands of the Stan Mikita, Jim Pappin and Bobby Hull led Hawks, who demolished New York four Straight lastspring in the Stanley Cup Quarter-Finals, To Geoffrion’s credit, he took the disappointing start in stride and planned to make no immediate changes in the Rangers’ lineup. “Work is what we need — and that is what the boys will get, starting tomorrow back in…

Flyers Show Box Office Spurt Doubling Advance Ticket Sale

PITTSBURGH, Pa.— Big League hockey, which took Philadelphia by storm-last season, has picked up right where it left off — at twice the pace. Already, the Flyers have more than double last year’s advance sale with better than, 4,500 season tickets and 18-game plans sold to National Hockey League fans for games at The Spectrum. To date, approximately 3,400 season tickets and 1,600 game plans have been gobbled up. “The response has been amazing,” said club president Bill Putnam. “Season ticket sales have climbed considerably over last season and the new 18-game ‘Pickaplan,’ which allows the fans to purchase the same seat for any 18 games, has proven exceptionally popular.” The Flyers had seven sell-outs’ last year during a hectic inaugural season which was impressive both on the ice and at the gate.…
