Ingarfield Named To Captain Penguins
PITTSBURGH, Pa.— Earl Ingarfield became the first Pittsburgh Penguin player to sign his 1968 - 69 contract when he came to terms with General Manager Jack Riley. The veteran centerman, who will be 34 in October, will be starting his ninth full season in the National Hockey League and his second with the Penguins. At the same time, Penguin Coach “Red” Sullivan announced that Ingarfield would serve as the team’s captain this season. He succeeds Ab McDonald who went to the St. Louis Blues in a three-team off-season transaction which brought Lou Angotti to the Penguins. Ingarfield was the Penguins’ first choice in the expansion draft a year ago June. However, a knee injury early in the season caused him to miss 20 games, and then torn ligaments in his left leg later…
Fan Enthusiasm Running High For Denver’s Return To WHL
DENVER, COLO.— At meeting of the board of governor’s of the Western Hockey League in Denver during June of this year, WHL president, A1 Leader, was quoted as saying, “the Spurs can’t miss.” Leader, of course, was referring to this city’s return to professional hockey, following an absence of four years. It was in the 1963-64 season that Denver’s WHL team, known then as the Invaders, won the league championship the Governor’s Cup. The club was owned by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it’s president, Stafford Smythe decided, because of lack of fan support, to move the Invaders to Victoria, British Columbia. The team operated for two years in the Canadian city, before being sold to Phoenix. Leader’s optimism concerning the success of the Spurs in the coming season is shared by many residents…
Stronger Defense To Aid Kings; Sawchuk Faces Battle For Net Job
LOS ANGELES, Calif — As the Los Angeles Kings prepared to go to pre-season training camp, a slightly deeper defense provided by summer manuevers offered followers of the club some hope for improvement in the coming campaign. The Kings scored heavily, if erratically, during their first season, but were scored on freely as they finished second by a slim point in the inaugural season of the Western Division. Veteran Terry Sawchuk and rookie Wayne Rutledge shared goal-tending duties for the team last season and are expected to do so again this season. Young Gerry Desjardins, obtained from Montreal, is expected to be assigned to Springfield of the American League. However the Kings are not committed to this and Desjardins could win a job in camp. Sawchuk will be 39 this season. He was…
‘New’ Forum Opening Planned For Nov. 2
—MONTREAL, Que. Montreal Canadiens will be entertaining at home on November 2nd, 1968, and it will be the first time in nearly six months that they’ll be seeing the inside of the place. The extensive renovations to the building which began moments after the Stanley Cup final against St. Louis, last May 11th, will — hopefully — be completed by then. The multi-million dollar face lifting to the venerable old building on Montreal’s St. Cahterine Street, will provide a spanking new home for the league and Stanley Cup champs. Among the more notable additions will be several escalators which will convey people to the upper reaches of the building, as well as some 2,000 extra seats which will bring the seating capacity to an all-time high of 16,300. Gone from the interior will…
