EAST-WEST EXHIBITIONS NEW TOUCH TO NHL’S PRE-SEASON HOCKEY PLAY

MONTREAL, Que. – The National Hockey League will introduce East-West rivalry into its 1968-69 exhibition game schedule and undoubtedly the innovation was prompted by the unexpected strong showing of expansion teams last season in regular NHL play. With a record-tieing 79 preseason games, the NHL has given the new teams the green light to engage the old clubs in training camp action for the first time. Last season the NHL would not permit games between the established clubs and the fledgling big league teams and for obvious reasons. They weren’t sure what kind of opposition the expansion squads would put up and it could have tarnished the ‘new city’ image before the regular schedule got underway. Ingarfield Named To Captain Penguins

PITTSBURGH, Pa.— Earl Ingarfield became the first Pittsburgh Penguin player to sign his 1968 - 69 contract when he came to terms with General Manager Jack Riley. The veteran centerman, who will be 34 in October, will be starting his ninth full season in the National Hockey League and his second with the Penguins. At the same time, Penguin Coach “Red” Sullivan announced that Ingarfield would serve as the team’s captain this season. He succeeds Ab McDonald who went to the St. Louis Blues in a three-team off-season transaction which brought Lou Angotti to the Penguins. Ingarfield was the Penguins’ first choice in the expansion draft a year ago June. However, a knee injury early in the season caused him to miss 20 games, and then torn ligaments in his left leg later…

Kings Invite 60 To Hockey Comp

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In all, 60 professionnals have been asked to report to the Kings’ training camp at Barrie, Ontario, 50 miles north of Toronto, on Sept. 11. The Kings trained at Guelph last season. Barrie, which has 27,000 lakeside residents and 25,000 more at the Canadian Armed Forces Station of Camp Borden, is expected to provide more varied facilities. The King will stay at the Continental Inn and train at the Barrie Arena. In a brochure sent each player, the men were advised, “Upon arrival at training camp players will be expected to do 25 pushups, 50 knee-bends and 50 sit-ups on request.” The players were asked to report within five pounds of their playing weights.
