New NHL Teams Seeking Quality In Bid To Catch Up To Old Clubs
MONTREAL, Que. — Hockey’s annual draft, sometimes referred to as “The Summer Madness,” is with us, once again. It will be held in Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel, commencing June 10 and running through June 13. It is, in effect, Phase Two of the Expansion Draft that was launched a year ago, when the league doubled in size to a 12-team operation. There are, of course, a few significant differences compared to the whoop-la of a year ago. It won’t be necessary, this time, to stock entire rosters of half-a-dozen new entries. Each of the twelve NHL teams will be allowed to protect 14 players, plus two goalies, from existing squads. NHL Season Runs Too Long, Need Reduction in Games Hockey News Editor: I am in complete agreement with Jim Coleman that the number of games in the regular schedule should be reduced to 66 instead of the present 74 to allow time for the five Stanley Cup series instead of the old three series.
