<div class="byline">BY NORMAN MacLEAN</div>NEW YORK, N.Y.&mdash;Hot Rod Gilbert was voted the West Side Association Trophy as the Rangers&rsquo; most valuable player during the 1967-68 season, but still there were carping crlticizers of his play. Some observers said that Jean Ratelie had had a more productive (32 goals to 29), and more steady season, than his right wing partner in crime.They had a point, as Gilbert had only five goals on December 16 - and New York was languishing in fifth and sixth place. When Hot Rod reeved up his engine the Blue machine took off and finished a nice respectable second. During the playoffs, Gilbert notched five goals in six contests and had the other Ranger forwards approximated their regular season play, the Blueshirts would now be playing Montreal instead of watching from the sidelines.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-01644/2475626-1-eng-US/f0004-012.jpg" title="f0004-01" width="251" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body">Rod Gilbert</figcaption></div>During the post season playdowns, New York scored only 12 goals and Gilbert got almost half of them. He was the whole attack in the final contest in Chicago, when he momentarily tied the scored by intercepting Pierre Pllote&rsquo;s passout.Because Gilbert has had two spinal fusion operations he is constantly pestered by scribes inquiring as to the condition of his spinal column. His play in the post season games might be interpreted as a quick message to the press, &ldquo;Get off my aching back. I am alright and will produce as much as the next guy.&rdquo;Rod got the aforementioned 29 goals this season and just missed a Ranger bonus for getting 30. He never has reached the 30 goal plateau, having seasons of 24, 25 and 28 in the past. Gilbert who is somewhat on the small side for a super star, nonetheless is the closest thing that New York has to this category of player. He stands five nine and weighs 175 pounds.Rod said, &ldquo;We missed a lot of bread by blowing the series to Chicago. I wish we had another shot at them.&rdquo;And he was angry when he sounded off. This presages even more determination for the nice guy matinee idol type of handsome young man that is the Ranger right wing. If he can play at his peak for about sixty games in a season, instead of experiencing the usual Gilbert spurts and then long droughts, Gilbert could eventually score 40 goals in a campaign.Emile Francis, the Rangers General Manager-Coach, for one, thinks that he will eventually reach this starry level.Francis says, &ldquo;Gilbert showed what he was made of in the playoffs. He will get even better with maturity. In the playoffs he did everything for New York that a Gordie Howe or Jean Beliveau could have done.&rdquo; BLUE CHIPS: Jim Neilson had bone chips removed from his right elbow just after the playoffs ended &hellip; Boom Boom Geoffrlon went to Florida for a week&rsquo;s rest prior to a May 6th date with the surgeon for the removal of his ulcer &hellip; Emile Francis is scouting the CPHL, WHL and Memorial Cup playoffs along with his aide, Jack Gordon &hellip; Rod Gilbert is staying In New York for a while to cash in on personal appearance contracts. The Columbia Broadcasting Company made the Rangers the subject of a half hour documentary on Tuesday April 23. Titled &ldquo;The Rebirth of the Blues&rdquo; it showed New York in action and gave closeups of Ranger players, and Emile Francis&rsquo; theories and methods &hellip; Jack Whitaker, who broadcasts the New York Giants football games, was the CBS commentator for the documentary! &#9632;

Rangers’ Gilbert Shows He’s Top Clutch Player With Showing In Playoffs

<div class="byline">BY HARVEY POLLACK</div>NEW YORK, N.Y. &mdash;As the Eastern Hockey League magnats gathered together here to review the past season and to delve into plans for the 1968-1969 campaign, official league figures were released on the past season.The meeting at the Hotel New Yorker May 6-8 is designed to clarify the situation of the 12 existing franchises for next season. There have been rumors about the shakiness of several franchises, notably Jersey, Knoxville and Nashville. At this session president Tom Lockhart likely will call for the posting of preliminary escrow money to solidify each franchise&rsquo;s plans to play next year.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0017-01353/2476853-1-eng-US/f0017-012.jpg" title="f0017-01" width="260" height="428"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bill Heindl</figcaption></div>Jersey is in a precarious state because of poor attendance this past season and the competition provided by the NHL Philadelphia Flyers. Knoxville almost folded in mid-season until a group headed by Frank Dafferner was given temporary control for the remainder of the year. Now Dafferner wants to get the franchise on a permanent basis and he will present his proposal at the meeting.Meantime Nashville, which lost a bundle this year, is still striving to secure a more favorable rental arrangement from the Nashville city government. So far their pleas have fallen on deaf ears and Mark Parrish may not continue under the old rental plan.Otherwise there doesn&rsquo;t seem to be any problems. Though both finished in the basement of their respective divisions in their inaugural campaign, Syracuse and Salem are expected back. Salem especially was heartened by the turnouts in spite of its poor record. Syracuse switched owners in midstream and the new group headed by Frank Barker is making big plans for next winter.There doesn't appear to be any instability elsewhere. New Haven had a big year as did champion Clinton. Johnstown broke its attendance mark, and though it slipped at the gate, Long Island realized its weak team was responsible for the dip and plans corrective measures.Down south, Greensboro and Charlotte enjoyed good financial seasons, and Florida was elated by the fan support in the last half of the season. The Rockets likely will do away with their St. Petersburg and West Palm Beach games and concentrate their activities in Jacksonville.There may be some new franchise bids also at the session, and a general review of the rules governing the circuit also will be on the agenda. The junior rule will be inspected thoroughly to see if any changes are necessary. Also Long Island is expected to bring up the matter of John Brophy&rsquo;s reinstatement for next winter and also the rules governing bans in the future.Another item will be the officiating which was given considerable criticism in many quarters this year. It&rsquo;s likely the teams will continue the policy of sticking strictly to divisional play and not battling any opposite division opponent until the finals of the playoffs. This system paid off handsomely this past season in reduced travel costs even though the variety of foes was not present as in past campaigns.As could be expected the official records proved that the champion Clinton Comets were the best team in the league both at home and on the road. The Comets were 33-1-2 at Clinton and Utica to pick up a total of 68 points out of a potential 72. This home mark was great but so was the Clinton road slate of 24-4-8 for 56 points. Thus it&rsquo;s no wonder the Comets breezed by all foes regardless of the site of the action.Actually only three teams had under .500 records at home. Salem was the worst with just nine wins, while Syracuse and Jersey also lost more than they won at home. There were many other good home records in addition to Clinton for New Haven with 28-4-4, Johnstown 26-5-5, Greensbor o 27-6-3, and Nashville 25-6-5 also excelled for their home fans.Outside of Clinton, only two other teams topped the .500 mark on enemy rinks. Both were in the South too. Greensboro with 19-14-3 and Charlotte with 17-13-6 comprised the pair. Nashville was even at 17-17-2.On the booby side, Salem won just two of its 36 road starts while Syracuse didn&rsquo;t win any, a tie with Johnstown preventing a complete 0-36 whitewash.There were only two teams that failed to beat another. Salem didn&rsquo;t beat Charlotte, dropping 12 games and tieing two others. This also was Jersey&rsquo;s record against Clinton. The Comets, incidentally, picked up at least 11 wins against every adversary with the exception of Johnstown which provided the most problems for the champs. The Jets were the only team to beat the Comets twice and they also tied three games.The official playoff statistics showed how conclusively Borden Smith proved such a help to Clinton&rsquo;s conquests. Borden was the top man with 23 points and 19 of these counters came on goals.In fact Clinton also had the No. 2 and 3 scorers in Bill Bannerman, 21 points, and Don Davidson, 20. Bannerman&rsquo;s 14 assists were tops for a Clinton team that scored 70 goals in its 14 playoff contests for an average of five per game. Its opposition meanwhile tallied 33 for an average of 2.36.Outside of Smith the only other player in double figures in goals was Bill Heindl of Clinton with 10. In assists behind Bannerman were Davidson 13, Russ McClenaghan of New Haven 12, Moe Savard of Charlotte 11 and Jack Kane of Clinton 10.Rick Foley, of Charlotte, was by far No. 1 in playoff penalties with 69 minutes. Ed Babiuk&rsquo;s 2.36 for Clinton topped the goalies who played consistently. Roger Wilson of New Haven had a 2.00 average in three games but he was supplanted in the cage by Al Johnstone after the first series. Wilson and John Voss of Greensboro were the only netminders to post shutouts in post-season play. &#9632;

Habs Enter 19th Stanley Cup Final

<div class="byline">BY ED CONRAD</div>PHILADELPHIA, Pa.&mdash;Look for Doug Favell or Bernie Parent to wear a uniform other than the Flyers&rsquo; next season.In an effort to obtain a productive forward who can Interject soma life into their offense, Philadelphia undoubtedly will trade Favell or Parent before May 15.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/cover-02317/2477352-1-eng-US/cover-022.jpg" title="Cover-02" width="247" height="420"><figcaption class="caption-body">Doug Faveil</figcaption><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/cover-03131/2477345-1-eng-US/cover-032.jpg" title="Cover-03" width="248" height="407"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bernie Parent</figcaption></div>&ldquo;We own three young goalies and can protect only two of them in the interleague draft in June,&rdquo; general manager Bud Poile explained. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t intend to give up the other in the draft.&rdquo;The third goalie is Fern Rivard, a first-year pro who led the farm club Quebec Aces into the American Hockey League&rsquo;s championship Calder Cup playoffs.Favell and Parent divided the netminding as the Flyers captured the Western Division title during the regular season even though the club scored only 173 goals.Poile feels that next season&rsquo;s first-place team will have to accumulate between 200 and 220 goals and think the only way the Flyers can do that is by acquiring a time-tested veteran forward who can put the puck in the net with consistency.It would seem highly probable that the Flyers would be better off trading either Favell or Parent since severan NHL clubs, troubled in front of their own goal, would be willing to meet Poile&rsquo;s asking price.&ldquo;If some club wants to offer us one or two players who can score 60 goals for us next season, we&rsquo;re ready to talk business,&rdquo; said the Flyers&rsquo; GM.An inept offense cost the Flyers eliminationin the first-round of the Stanley Cup playoffs when the St. Louis Blues won several low-scoring games en route to a series victory in the seventh and deciding contest.During the playoffs, Parent was sensational with the lowest goals-against average (under 11/2 goals a game) in the series.Throughout the regular season, Favell was the team leader with a 2.27 average while parent wound up with a 2.49 mark. The pair was the best in the Western Division and finished third in Vezina Trophy tabulation among the 12 league clubs.Rivard, who at 22 is a year younger than the other two goalies, had a fine year at Quebec and the Flyers&rsquo; only question was whether he has the stuff to make the grade in the NHL.For that reason, the Flyers&rsquo; brass attended several of the Aces&rsquo; playoff games against Rochester. They wanted to be sure that Rivard would be a capable backup goalie with the Flyers next year.With this sort of assurance, Poile and coach Keith Allen would be ready to plunge right into the trade market where at least five clubs have expressed interest in Favell and Parent in recent months.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll make a move before May 15,&rdquo; said Poile. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s when the rosters have to be frozen for the draft.&rdquo;Anyone acquainted with the Flyers&rsquo; GM knows he&rsquo;s a tough bargainer but a sound hockey man whose only objective is to put the best possible talent on the ice for his coach.That&rsquo;s why Poile is willing to let Parent or Favell go, even though he knows they&rsquo;re two of the most talented young goalies in the game today with a great future. &ldquo;It would be a shame to lose Favell, Parent or even Rivard,&rdquo; said Bud. &ldquo;But you learn in this business that you have to give something to get something worthwhile in any trade.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s no secret than we need some scorers and I don&rsquo;t think well get what we want in the draft. So well just have to make a trade.&rdquo; &#9632;

PHILLY READY TO TRADE FOR SCORERS, WILL OFFER FAVELL OR PARENT AS BAIT

<div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>DETROIT, Mich.&mdash;Everything has been quiet on the Red Wing front since the club finished at the rear of the NHL&rsquo;s Eastern Division.There hasn&rsquo;t even been much conversation in town about Sid Abel&rsquo;s successor as coach.First, the Tigers started strong in baseball to capture the fan&rsquo;s attention, second, there&rsquo;s the continuing, apparently endless newspaper strike and third, it&rsquo;s been almost a foregone conclusion that club owner Bruce Norris will name Bill Gadsby as coach.However, Fort Worth coach Fern Flaman has picked up some support for his handling of the Texas Wings in the CPHL. They finished in second place in the Central League&rsquo;s Southern Division and played their way into the finals of the Adams Cup playoffs.While Gadsby&rsquo;s coaching background consists of two in junior hockey, Flaman has six years of pro coaching behind him. And, like Gadsby, he was an All-Star defenseman during his NHL years.Flaman spent 15 years in the NHL, most of them with Boston, and made the All-Star team three times. He played 910 games and was one of the league&rsquo;s tougher rearguards with seven seasons of 100-plus penalty minutes and a career total of 1,370 to put him just behind Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe and Gadsby.Flaman coached the Providence Reds of the American League for four seasons with one title, two thirds and a fifth, and was the Reds&rsquo; general manager one season. He&rsquo;s had single years coaching at Los Angeles &mdash; LA&rsquo;s final year in the Western League &mdash; and Fort Worth.Interestingly, the top two candidates for the Wing job, Gadsby and Flaman, were exceptional defensemen during their active careers and defense is Detroit&rsquo;s obvious shortcoming.Norris is expected to name the new man following the Stanley Cup playoffs.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01582/2475509-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="558" height="563"><figcaption class="caption-body">FERN FLAMAN&hellip; Has The Experience</figcaption><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-02557/2475502-1-eng-US/f0002-022.jpg" title="f0002-02" width="560" height="567"><figcaption class="caption-body">BILL GADSBY&hellip; Favored By Norris</figcaption></div>With the Wings out of the playoffs again, activity around Olympia is almost non-existent. Abel and his aides are watching the various playoff series in hopes of finding an available defenseman.&ldquo;Things have been so bad,&rdquo; said public relations director Ron Cantera, &ldquo;that we not only didn&rsquo;t make the playoffs, we can&rsquo;t even see them on television. We really got knocked out.&rdquo;The Detroit station that carried the NHL-CBS series during the regular season also carries the Tiger baseball games and baseball has taken precedence over hockey.Motor City hockey fans do get the Canadian telecasts, however, as they always have.And it never ceases to amaze that the CBC hasn&rsquo;t changed its ancient policy of picking up the games in progress instead of with the opening faceoff. The CBC doesn&rsquo;t pick up Canadian football games at the end of the first quarter but except for the Stanley Cup finals, they won&rsquo;t pick up hockey until the game is 30 minutes old.That&rsquo;s been especially maddening in this year&rsquo;s playoffs. Apparently the only good burst the Boston Bruins had in four games came before the cameras were turned on &hellip; and Montreal wrapped up its first game with Chicago before air time.Whatever problems CBS has had, and they&rsquo;ve been considerable, they&rsquo;ve at least started with the opening faceoff.ICE CHIPS The Frank Mahovliches are now five &hellip; the most recent addition is a boy, seven pounds, four ounces, making it two boys and a girl.The Red Wings tied a club record by using 38 players this past season &hellip; the mark was set initially in 1963-64.Gordie Howe and his partners aren&rsquo;t letting a little windstorm damage slow them. High winds damaged Howe&rsquo;s suburban rink April 8 and contracts have been let not only to repair the rink but for an additional rink as well, this one to seat 2,000 persons.And Howe, the king of hockey, is getting in with the king of golf&mdash;he&rsquo;s putting up an Arnold Palmer putting range too.Howe said repairs on the existing rink are scheduled for July 1 completion and won&rsquo;t interfere with his hockey school which runs from Aug. 4-31. &#9632;

Fern Flaman Gaining Support In Red Wing Coaching Stakes But Gadsby Top Hope For Job

This is the final weekly issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS for this season but don't think for a minute we are going to wind up our biggest year ever without bringing you the complete Stanley Cup story. Because the NHL season has extended past our final issue deadline, we will publish a special Stanley Cup extra in our first monthly edition which will be the June issue. So watch for it. We plan to have it out immediately following the termination of the Stanley Cup finals. Our annual statistical issue of all hockey leagues, normally carried in June, will appear in the July issue and in time for the summer hockey draft. &#9632;

TREMBLAY &hellip; Wins Plaudits From Blake</figcaption></div>MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;It wouldn&rsquo;t be too surpri sing if a defenseman won the Conn Smythe trophy for the first time, this year.The Smythe award is given to "the most valuable player for his team in the entire playoffs.&rdquo; Forwards usually have the inside track, because of spectacular scoring feats, and goalies rate highly, too. Since the trophy was first presented in 1965 it&rsquo;s been won by two forwards, Jean Beliveau and Davey Keon, and a netminder Roger Crozier. But, rearguards should be right in contention for it, this year.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01582/2475571-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg" title="f0003-01" width="234" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jacques Laperriere</figcaption></div>Of course, it&rsquo;s necessary for a team to go right to the finals in order that their players receive full consideration. The key words are &ldquo;in the entire playoffs.&rsquo;&rsquo; But, in the Chicago-Montreal series alone, men like Doug Jarrett and Pat Stapleton for the Hawks, while Jacques Laperriere and J.C. Tremblay for Habs, were really outstanding in helping oust the Hawks in the Eastern finals.As far as Laperriere is concerned, he&rsquo;s, been having the greatest playoff of his career. Always a good puck-handler, the 26-year-old defenseman has added some robust hitting to his game and it&rsquo;s made him one of the most effective men on the Montreal blueline. He started hitting late in the season, found that it paid off, and continued it through the playoff rounds. Some of his body checks in the Chicago series have been classics, notably his hits against Dennis Hull and Pit Martin in the opening game of the series in Montreal However, he&rsquo;s also been a powerful factor in penalty-killing, along with Claude Provost and the Tremblays.Laperriere is understandably eager to star in a playoff be cause his cup record, prior to this year, wasn&rsquo;t much The reason for it can be traced to injuries, which sidelined him at playoff time during two of the past three years, in 1965 he missed the finals due to a broken leg. In 1966 he was out of the playoffs entirely with torn ligaments in the left knee. The fact that Canadiens won the cup without him, in those years, hasn&rsquo;t been lost on Jacques, either. He wants to prove himself in a cup round, and this could be his year.J.C. Tremblay is another who&rsquo;s been playing great defensive hockey in the playoffs. Actually, this is nothing new for the latern jawed J.C. who&rsquo;s usually at his best in the post-season skirmishing. He was tremendous in early games against Chicago, reaching the heights in the second game of the semifinal. Tbe Blake said it was the finest game J.C. had played against Hawks.&ldquo;He was terrific,&rdquo; said Toe &ldquo;I&rsquo;d have to say it was the best game I&rsquo;ve ever seen him play against Chicago, and probably his best in the playoffs.&rdquo;Tremblay helped set up two goalsthat night, as Habs won 4-1 Besides taking his regular turn on defence, he worked the powerplay and helped kill penalties. He probably logs more ice time than any other Canadiens rearguard, and is particularly sharp at getting the puck up to his forwards.J.C. should&rsquo;ve won the Smythe Trophy two years ago, but was overlooked by the selectors. He was tremendous in that 1966 series, as Habs eliminated Tbronto in four straight and Detroit in six games, to win their last Stanley Cup. He chalked up 11 pointsinthe 10 games to finish as secondhighest scorer in the playoff rounds.Now 28 years of age, Tremblay is appearing in his eighth straight playoff year since joining Habs in 1960. That makes him senior man on the Canadiens&rsquo; blueline, and one of six defensemen, still active, who&rsquo;d scored 30 or more points in cup play going into this year. In the old days you had to go to the newsreels to see Red Grange and Babe Ruth. Now, television is bringing athletes into every home and giving them greater stature. His solution, however, leaves the fans of the expansion division with very little to hope for. Putting three teams of the west and three of the east in each division would be fine for the east, but what impetus does it give the Oakland fan? Do the Maple Leafs have a God-given right to the playoffs just because they are older than the North Stars? If expansion had never taken place, does Mr. Birch feel that the Leafs would have made the playoffs? They still came in fifth. Do not the Kings and Blues have some rights?A better solution the NHL might consider would be interlocking the playoffs. The same four teams from each division would go into the quarter-finals, but the winner of the Eastern Division would go against the third place team of the Western Division. Second East would meet fourth West, etc. In this way, the established teams would have a better chance to get into the finals. In addition, the fans of the new teams would come out in droves to see their clubs go against the old winners. I believe our Los Angeles crowds in the first round would have been doubled by our meeting the Black Hawks instead of the North Stars. Yes, our chances would not have been as good, but who&rsquo;s to say? In other words, the West would have a winner and a runner-up to cheer about; the east would have a better chance in the playoffs; and the fans would probably get a truer representative in the Cup winner.I speak for many Los Angeles fans in saying thanks to the NHL for giving us a team. Thanks to Jack Kent Cooke for the Forum&rsquo;, for his selection of Larry Regan and Red Kelly to run the team, and for his bringing to L.A. fans the greatest announcer in hockey, Jiggs McDonald.BUD KOTMAN,Los Angeles, Calif.<h2>Seattle Logical City For Next NHL Expansion</h2>Hockey News Editor:In recent issues of THE HOCKEY NEWS, both Ken McKenzie and Bill Libby expressed the view that the most likely candidates for the next NHL expansion were Vancouver, San Diego, Baltimore, and Buffalo. While I heartily agree with the first two, I believe that Seattle would be a more logical candidate than either of the Eastern cities.First of all, Seattle&rsquo;s building, the Center Coliseum (Cap. 12,300) is larger than both the Baltimore Civic Center (11,321) and the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium (9814). While the Coliseum is not large by NHL standards, it seats only 200 less than Oakland&rsquo;s Coliseum and Pittsburgh&rsquo;s Civic Arena. Secondly, another West Coast team would cut down on transcontinentalair travel and ease scheduling pressuresThirdly, and most important, is Seattle&rsquo;s sport&rsquo;s orientation. Voters recently approved a $40 million domed stadium, and Seattle was awarded an American League baseball team, to begin operation next year. The Seattle Super sonics of the NBA, in their first year of operation this winter, were seventh in attendance (out of 12 teams), far outdrawing established Baltimore Bullets, and averaging only 400 less than division champion St. Louis. More specifically, Seattle is a far better hockey draw. The WHL Totems drew 204,520 for 36 home dates this year, topped by 5 crowds of over 12,000 and a high of 13,070. This far surpassed Buffalo, which drew only 165,954 for the same number of games and had a top crowd of 9,664.DAVE RORDEN,Seattle, Wash.<h2>Vancouverites Deserving Of Big League Hockey</h2>Hockey News Editor:First of all, I would like to comment on the letter of April 13 submitted by Don Myers of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In his proposal that the Oakland franchise stay in that area and be taken over by Charles O. Finley, Mr. Myers becomes sentimental and loses the objective outlook he seeks.I could imagine the stunts Mr. Finley would come up with, to &ldquo;add color&rdquo; to the game. Similar to his baseball team&rsquo;s antics, the Oakland Seals would probably do their warmup sessions on mules, and we would eventually have polo on ice. Possibly, in the distant future, Oakland would then draw as many fans as Vancouver does. The difference is that Vancouver has the fans now, and they are of the type that is not attracted to hockey games by mules or exploding scoreboards. In the past hockey has been sold to the public by the games, players, and action which emerges. Without gimmies, the people of Vancouver have supported a club, and will continue to do so regardless of how their team faires.Secondly, I would like to reappraise the statements credited to Bernie Parent concerning Glenn Hall: &ldquo;If Glenn were so good, why didn&rsquo;t he lead the Black Hawks to more than one Stanley Cup and to more than one regular-season title?&rdquo;A goalie&rsquo;s record is only as good as that of the team in front of him. However, his personal abilities can be reflected by individual awards. Selected to the first all-star team six times and to the second squad on four occasions, Glenn is not only great, but probably the greatest. Until Mr. Parent or someone else equals his record, &ldquo;Mr. Goalie&rdquo; and his V-formation will continue to be the most effective in the NHL. Having seen Glenn play with the Edmonton Flyers, and Bernie with Niagara Falls Flyers, I still say Mr. Parent has to prove himself.RAY TURCHANSKYLeduc, Alta. &#9632;

ROCHESTER, N.Y.&mdash;The proposed minor league championship series between the American and Western hockey leagues has been cancelled by mutual agreement of the two circuits.The unexpected announcement was made jointly by the presidents of the two leagues&mdash;Jack Butterfield of the AHL and Al Leader of the WHL. Both agreed that the best-of-seven title series would run too late.Rochester Americans, the defending AHL champions, were still battling Quebec Aces for the Calder Cup with Rochester leading 2-1. On the other hand Seattle Totems were crowned WHL champions last weekend meaning the Totems would have to wait at least another week before Rochester would be available for the minor series.The WHL-AHL playoff was originally scheduled to begin May 3, but because of the death of negro leader Martin Luther King, both leagues had to postpone their earlier playoffs.If the two leagues were to meet in a series and take the full seven game limit, finishing date would not be before may 24 and this was not considerable feasible by either the WHL or AHL.Meanwhile, the AHL was having its own problems without thinking about playing the WHL winner. The Rochester-Quebec final was becoming a rugged affair with tempers flaring, benches emptying, sticks being carried high and one coach ejected from a game for going on the ice during a fight.Butterfield said that $900 in fines were assessed 19 members of the competing teams.Quebec coach Vic Stasiuk was hardest hit in the check-book war which resulted in a total of 42 minutes in penalties during the period. He was fined $300.Butterfield criticized Stasiuk for failing to fullfil his coach&rsquo;s responsibility of maintaining control over players. &ldquo;During the outburst which could have precipitated a very serious incident that would have been prejudicial to the welfare of hockey.&rdquo;As far as the action on the ice was concerned, the Americans started off by winning both games on Rochester ice before losing the third in Quebec.If nothing else, the teams were packing them in at the gate. A crowd of 10,177 saw the Quebec City game and another 12,300 witnessed the two Rochester games. &#9632;

American, Western Leagues Call Off Minor Ice Series

<div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div>LOS ANGELES, Calif.&mdash;It didn&rsquo;t really matter what the experts said beforehand, no one really knew how the new teams would jell. Everyone started even from scratch, and the final results are all that counts. The Los Angeles Kings had a good first season, though not as good as it seemed it should have been, and if they make some changes they can be better next season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01672/2475771-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="260" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Terry Sawchuk</figcaption></div>The Kings put themselves in first place one week from the end of the regular season, and then only had to win one of their last three games to take the expansion division pennant. Once blowing a two-goal lead, they failed, and finished second, a point behind Philadelphia.Winning the first two games of the opening playoff series, they then needed to win only two of the next five games to advance. Three times blowing two-goal leads, they failed, and they were a humiliated crew in the seventh and final game.The Kings just weren&rsquo;t tough enough. Minnesota boss Wren Blair admitted his team was discouraged and ripe to be taken out quickly, but along the way he kept insisting that if the Stars applied pressure, the Kings would fold, which is what happened.The turning point came when the Kings led 3-1 in the sixth game with only one period to play to settle the series. When the Stars applied pressure, the Kings folded. When the Stars got within a goal, the Kings panicked. They Iced the puck four times and froze it five times in two minutes. Their poise was gone and it was only a matter of time until they would be tied and beaten.Going home, they still had the home ice edge for the decisive game, but they were disheartened, and objective observers anticipated the rout that came, 9-4. The fans &mdash; who turned out better every game in L.A. &mdash; 6,847, then 8,144, then 10, 685, and finally 11,214 &mdash; were booing their dishonored troops at the finish.Strategically, the Kings made one major error, but it was not unexpected. Although rookie Wayne Rutledge was clearly superior to Terry Sawchuk in goal throughout the season and carried the Kings into the playoffs, everyone kept saying they&rsquo;d turn to the old pro in the clutch, so they did, both when the pennant and playoffs slipped from their grasp.He was the greatest goalleever, but now he has no speed left and his reflexes are shot, and anyone observing him realistically could see how vulnerable he was. He got by only as long as the Kings threw a blanket of protection around him. When the Kings&rsquo; defensemen fell apart, he was a sitting duck.Red Kelly got two good games out of Rutledge, but turned back game and when the Kings still had a chance and the fans called for him to be replaced after one period, Red stayed loyally with him. Terry hardly reacted on any of the shots that beat him, and was left in to have debris heaped about him at the finish.Minnesota boss Wren Blair said, &ldquo;After the two games Rutledge gave them, I couldn&rsquo;t believe the Kings would turn back to Sawchuk but when we saw him in the nets it gave us a lift and I think it let down the Kings. It would have been hard to yank him after his great career, but I guess the team should have come first.&rdquo;In the final analysis, however, only Eddie Joyal, Lowell MacDonald, Doug Robinson and Bill White enjoyed good playoffs. Otherwise, the magnificent goalie Cesare Maniago and the brilliant shootfer Wayne Connelly led a gallant Minnesota club that simply was too tough for the Kings.The Kings never again may put themselves in a position where the gold and glory are easier to attain. Had they won the pennant and reached the playoff finals, as they should have, they would have earned $8,250 extra a man. Finishing second and losingin the opening round, they earned, $2,750. a difference of a fat $5,500 each. Now they must be rated finally as third or fourth best of the new clubs, around the middle of the Western circuit. And it will get tougher from here on.Owner Jack Kent Cooke and manager Larry Regan did everything they possibly could to assemble a talented team, and they sympathetically supported coach Red Kelly&rsquo;s patient leadership of the players. In their rookie years their major sins were that they unrealistically overrated some of the players and were overconfident of what these players could achieve. They resented any suggestions that any team had any better players. But these players let them down, so one assumes the leaders will not regard them so charitably in the future.Cooke, Regan and Kelly are brilliant, determined men. Late in the season they said they thought they&rsquo;d stand pat with their crew next season, but now one assumes that they can see some changes are necessary. As presently constituted, the Kings will not make the playoffs next season. But the leaders have assembled a talented nucleus as a base on which a winner can be built. Experience will help, but it isn&rsquo;t enough.The club will have to be rebuilt mentally to restore confidence after the manner in which it fell. And the team needs a solid reserve goalie to back up Rutledge, at least two new defensemen, a physically strong center, a left-winger who can score, and a point-man around whom a power-play can be constructed. No team gets everything it needs, but if by draft, trade or purchase, the Kings get two or three of these men, and if the new men are hitters and tough, then the Kings still can be formidable next season.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-02542/2475764-1-eng-US/f0006-022.jpg" title="f0006-02" width="2355" height="1309"></div> &#9632;

Ousted Kings Must Find New Faces

<div class="byline">BY GLENN REDMANN</div>TWIN CITIES, Minn.&mdash;There were several success stories connected with Minnesota&rsquo;s surprising come-from-hehind triumph over the Los Angeles Kings in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.But none was more satisfying to the players themselve than &ldquo;the rebirth of Milan Marcetta.&rdquo;Marcetta, you may recall, is the 6-foot-l, 195-pound centerman whom the North Stars picked up from Rochester late in December.After a splendid minor league record which included 34, 28 and 40-goal seasons in the Western League, Milan was passed over byall six new NHL teams in the expansion draft and thereby remained Toronto property.This disappointed the 31-year-old native of Cadomin, Alta., naturally, and so did his being sent to Rochester after putting in a fair-to-middlin&rsquo; training camp with the Maple Leafs.But Marcetta took it in stride and when Rochester bossman Joe Crozier decided to trade his veteran forward and lustling J.P. Parise to Minnesota in exchange for Duke Harris, Len Lunde, Murray Hall, Ted Taylor and Don Johns, Milan was his leading scorer with 18 goals and 22 assists.Immediately upon reporting to the North Stars, Marcetta was put between wingers Parise and Bill Goldsworthy, thus freeing another centerman, Ray Cullen, for duty at right wing.The Stars began to click and were one game within the .500 mark at 14-15-8 when tragedy struck in the form of centerman Bill Masterton&rsquo;s untimely death.Marcetta, who didn&rsquo;t have the opportunity to get to know Masterton well, nevertheless felt his new teammate&rsquo;s death and, like a lotof other players on the team, had a hard time performing up to his capabilities.Although he contributed a half dozen assists in his first games in Minnesota livery, Marcetta didn&rsquo;t get his first goal until Jan. 20 against Toronto. It was his 11th game as a North Star.General manager-coach Wren Blair was hopeful this would break the ice for Millie, but it was 10 more games before Marcetta scored again on Feb. 10 in a victory at Oakland that pushed the Stars&rsquo; record to 22-21-9 only three points out of the West Division lead.The one-time Victoria favorite kept plugging away and contributed two goals to an important win over the Flyers in Philadelphia on Feb. 2.But then a funny thing happened on the way to the last five weeks of the season. Marcetta quit getting either goals or assists and Blair not only began to have some serious reservations about Millie&rsquo;s ability to make it in the NHL, tie sat him down completely in favor of rookie Sandy Fitzpatrick.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0007-02572/2475802-1-eng-US/f0007-022.jpg" title="f0007-02" width="553" height="485"><figcaption class="caption-body">MILAN MARCETTA&hellip; Sterling Performer</figcaption></div>Just before the start of the playoffs, however, Blair called both Marcetta and Fitzpatrick into his office and told them he was going to use Millie as centerman on his No. 3 line between Dave Baton and Goldsworthy &ldquo;because of Marcetta&rsquo;s experience.&rdquo;And what has happened since is best described by Blair himself:&ldquo;Millie pushed himself beyond what he had done before. He began to make plays as he did in the minor leagues. But it isn&rsquo;t all Marcetta, either, and he knows this. Baton and Goldsworthy have had a great deal to do with it, too.&rdquo;The line combined for nine of the Minnesotans&rsquo; 26 goals against L.A. in the playoffs including five in the decisive 9-4 rout of the Kings in the seventh and deciding game at the Forum April 18.And how did Marcetta take his new-found success?&ldquo;It really feels great,&rdquo; he said.&ldquo;I missed a lot of good scoring chances when I first came here and pretty soon I began to lose confidence in myself.&ldquo;But even after I stopped playing (he sat out eight games completely) I never gave up hope of getting another chance. Now I&rsquo;m contributing and it&rsquo;s a great feeling.&rdquo; &#9632;

MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;The current playoffs may well turn out to be a records hallering affair.For one thing, the team that wins the Stanley Cup will have appeared in three separate series quarter, semi, and finals, and may have played more games than any cup team in history. Minnesota and St. Louis are presently battling through a semi-final round, which could go seven games. Each of those clubs took seven games to eliminate their opposition in the quarter-final rounds. Should their present series go the limit, and then one or the other of them engage the Eastern Division winners in another seven-game series, they&rsquo;d have played 21 games.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-07191/2475930-1-eng-US/f0008-072.jpg" title="f0008-07" width="244" height="423"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bill Goldsworthy</figcaption></div>Some playoff scoring records are likely to fall, too, in view of the lengthened schedule. Currently, the most goals in one playoff year is twelve. The record is held jointly by Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau. A new record could be set by Beliveau, himself, who had seven goals after eight games against Boston and Chicago. A trio of Minnesota players might also surpass the mark. Wayne Connelly, Milan Marcetta and Bill Goldsworthy each had six goals after 10 playoff games.Most goals ever scored by a defenseman in one playoff year is five. Chicago&rsquo;s Earl Seibert set the record back in 1938. As this was written, Chicago&rsquo;s Doug Jarret had four goals to his credit. Minnesota&rsquo;s Mike McMahon had three.Other records, such as most points in a playoff year, most assists in a playoff year, most points and most assists by a defenseman in a playoff year are also in jeopardy. Or, might be by the time this lengthy playoff Is over. Same goes for penalty records,. particularly most penalty minutes in a playoff year (55) held jointly by old Leaf badman Red Horner and ex-Detrolter Jimmy Orlando.Like the man said, it will be interesting to see what happens. And, how many asterisks should the record book contain to distinguish various records set under different playing conditions? &#9632;

MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;Montreal Canadiens have landed in the National Hockey League&rsquo;s big show for the 19th time in playoff history.Eliminating the pesky Chicago Black Hawks in five games, the Canadiens advanced into the Stanley Cup final to represent the East against the Western Division champion &mdash; either Minnesota North Stars or St. Louis Blues.The Habs missed pulling off their second successive series sweep when the Hawks turned tigers in the fourth game and won 2-1 on a pair of goals by Bobby Hull.The Canadiens have experienced little difficulty in the playoffs and must enter the cup showdown series heavily favored to win it all and bring back Montreal&rsquo;s 13th Stanley Cup.After disposing of Boston in four straight games, the Canadiens jumped the Hawks, winning the first two games on Montreal ice and then moving into Chicago to take a commanding 3-0. Although the Hawks fought back to win the fourth game the Habs quickly regained control and sent the Tribe packing for the off season by winning the fifth game on Montreal ice 4-3 in sudden-death overtime.Star of the Eastern semifinal series windup was Jacques Lemaire, the brilliant Montreal rookie who has scored six times in the playoffs this year. Lemaire banged in two goals to topple the Hawks in the deciding game with his second coming in overtime against Goalie Denis DeJordy. Veteran Dick Duff set up the play.With eight wins in nine playoff starts, Toe Blake&rsquo;s Canadiens loomed all the more imposing for the forthcoming cup finals. Canadiens Enter 13th Cup Final

LOUIS, Mo.&mdash;St. Louis Blues and Minnesota North Stars were locked in a &lsquo;death&rsquo; struggle for the Western Division&rsquo;s playoff title that could take the series down to the wire and prolong the start of the Stanley Cup finals with Montreal Canadiens.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-04451/2476072-1-eng-US/f0009-042.jpg" title="f0009-04" width="259" height="431"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gary Sabourin</figcaption></div>The Blues, after winning the series opener, promptly dropped the next two to the Stars and then came back to win in overtime and deadlock the best-of-seven series at 2-2. With two of the next three games on home ice, the Blues appeared to be in the best position to make it to the finals.Coach Scotty Bowman played a hunch when he tossed slumping Gary Sabourin out on the ice in the overtime period against Minnesota in game four. Bowman&rsquo;s thinking was that maybe Sabourin, who was having trouble putting the puck in the net, might be hungry enough. Besides he was more rested than Bowman&rsquo;s ice weary veterans.The strategy paid off when Sabourin fired the game-winning goal after only 1.32 of the first overtime period togive St. Louis a 4-3 decision and new life in the series.Paced by Dickie Moore, Jim Roberts and Doug Harvey, three old pros formerly with Montreal, the Blues were hoping to wrap up the series at home. Minnesota, getting top offensive power from Milan Marcetta, Wayne Connelly, and Bill Goldsworthy, was striving to overcome the odds of having to play on St. Louis ice because their own rink was not available. &#9632;

St. Louis, Minnesota Battle To Gain NHL Cup Berth

<div class="byline">BY ED CONRAD</div>&ldquo;You like 7up 7up like you&rdquo;PHILADELPHIA, Pa. &ndash;If you flip Keith Allen&rsquo;s calendar ahead a couple months, you&rsquo;ll probably discover a large red circle around September 15.That&rsquo;s when the Flyers return to their Quebec City training camp for a brand-new season and that&rsquo;s when Allen, the coach, hopes to set in motion the machinery for a season better than the one just past.Although the Flyers did capture the National Hockey League&rsquo;s Western Division regular-season championship, the club was eliminated in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the St. Louis Blues. Their best-of-seven series went right down to the seventh game when the Blues pulled out a 3-1 victory at the Spectrum.&ldquo;We were very disappointed about being eliminated in the first round,&rdquo; said Keith. &ldquo;You feel bad whenever you get beat but you don&rsquo;t feel as badly when you&rsquo;re a third or fourth-place team.&ldquo;We finished the regular season in first place and that&rsquo;s why it was a lot tougher on us to lose it. True it was a heckuva series and could have gone either way, but we&rsquo;re really disappointed that we didn&rsquo;t get past the opening round.&rdquo;A deficiency which plagued the Flyers almost all season &mdash; the lack of scoring punch &mdash; cost the club heavily in the playoffs. They had received outstanding goaltending from Bernie Parent but were unable to score a substantial number of goals to take full advantage of his excellent netmlnding.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s obvious that next season we&rsquo;ve got to get more goals,&rdquo; admitted Allen. &ldquo;We have to get some guys who can put that puck in the net.&ldquo;This is what we lacked in the playoffs and this is what we seemed to lack all season. We had a very good defensive record but our forwards just lacked scoring punch.&rdquo;Allen and general manager Bud Polle aren&rsquo;t keeping their eyes closed in other areas, though, but their emphasis is on a more potent offense.Polle says he has taken a step In that direction by ticketing center Andre Lacroix and wingers Simon Nolet and Jean-Guy Gendron on the same line next season.According to Bud, they&rsquo;ll work together as a unit right from the start of training camp and undoubtedly will constitute one of the Flyers&rsquo; lines once the season gets underway.The Flyers are very high on the potential of the threesome because they finished among the top four scorers in the American Hockey League this season, Nolet won the scoring title with 96 points while Gendron and Lacroix, who missed the final month of the campaign because ofpromotlontothe Flyers, each tallied 87 to tie for third place.PHIL-INS Goalie Bernie Parent, defenseman Joe Watson and wingers Bill Sutherland and Rosey Paiement were the first four Flyers to agree to next year&rsquo;s contracts . .Three Flyers will be undergoing operations in the near future: Watson (shoulder), Forbes Kennedy (elbow) and Don Blackburn (knee) &hellip; General manager Bud Poile labels defenseman Ralph MacSweyn the most Improved player in the Flyers&rsquo; organization this year. &ldquo;Ralph is a throwback to the old days,&rdquo; said Poile. &ldquo;He hit &rsquo;em at mid-ice&rdquo; &hellip; Poile feels that his club will have to get at least 200 goals next season if it hopes to repeat as Western Division titlist. The Black Hawks came away from the series with Montreal holding a lot of respect for Lemaire.&ldquo;He can play in this league as long as he wants to,&rdquo; said Chicago coach Billy Reay in praising Lemaire. LOUTS, Mo.&mdash;St. Louis&rsquo; Frank St. Marseille was a runny-nose kid of eight, belly-slamming on a sled up in Levak, Ont., when Douglas Norman Harvey was already an established defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens in 1947. Yet, there was St. Marseille, poised like a hungry vulture in front of Minnesota North Star goalie Cesare Maniago, drilling home a goal that had been brilliantly set up by Harvey. The shot tied the score at 2-2 in the first game of the semi-final series for the Stanley Cup. The Blues won it, 5-3.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-01654/2476165-1-eng-US/f0011-012.jpg" title="f0011-01" width="252" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Doug Harvey</figcaption></div>Doug Harvey, at 44, was giving hysterical St. Louis fans and a national television audience a look at how the game of ice hockey was intended to be played. Playing in his 131st Stanley Cup game (the second with the Blues after joining them from his playing-coach job with their Kansas City farm) Harvey showed the class and brilliance that earned him a place on 10 National League All Star teams.Moving up ice with authority on legs that were just a shadow of bygone years, Harvey sent a precision pass into the right slot to Dickie Moore, another brilliant name out of the glorious past of the Montreal Canadians. Moore, who had retired for three years before being lured back by an attractive St. Louis checkbook, layed the biscuit on the stick of St. Marseille and the Blues were never again to trail in that one.This has been the remarkable, thrilling storyof the St. Louis Blues in their first trip through the perilous land of Stanley Cup play.Famed names from the past, some of them living legends of ice hockey&rsquo;s most brilliant years, together with hungry veterans who were relegated to minor league roles too long, and raw, green rookies whom fate had propelled into a dazzling limelight of the big time - this is what the Blues were made of.They had pulled off startling exhibitions of magic all season long, fighting against crippling injuries, disdaining what appeared often to be insurmountable odds, yanking last-ditch vitories from almost certain defeat with an uncanny legerdemain.With front office boss Lynn Patrick and Coach Scotty Bowman pulling off an early season swap that brought the swift and adroit Gordon (Red) Berenson and the embattled Barclay Plager into the Blues igloo, together with enough personnel shifts to confuse an electronic computor, the Blues yanked themselves from a lowly fifth place in the West to storm through to a spactacular third place finish. Then, when it appeared that their Cinderella story was about to come to an abrupt end following a heart-breaking sixth-game double overtime loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers, the Blues once again dipped into their bag of witchcraft and knocked the regular season leaders right out of the playoffs. They did it with a masterful performance of defensive tactics, winning, 3-1, and sending 14,646 dejected Philadelphia fans trooping in memorium from the leaky Spectrum.It was in this pivotal situation, going into the seventh and last game of the quarter-finals of the Cup play that Patrick and Bowman again proved their savvy.The Blues were down, lower than a sidewinder&rsquo;s belly, going into this key contest.Into the lineup went the grizzled, ageing Harvey.&ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t a last-minute decision, really,&rsquo; declared Patrick.&ldquo;Scotty (Bowman) and I had talked a couple of months ago about bringing Doug into the lineup when we got into the Stanley Cup action. We both had the feeling he would be able to give the club the kind of experience and morale lift that might be a real boost.&rdquo;But Patrick and Bowman did not show their hand until the situation appeared desperate enough to merit uncovering their ace in the hole.&ldquo;Harvey steadied the club,&rdquo; said Bowman later. &ldquo;They respect him and he has actually coached a number of the youngsters on our club.&rdquo;It was almost as if the Blues were operating as the Southern Division of the Montreal Canadiens as they moved against the North Stars in the semi-final best-of-seven that would determine who would represent the upstart expansion division against the austere and snobbish combatants from the Eastern sector.At any one moment you might find on the ice for St. Louis ex-Montreal Canadiens Harvey, Moore, Berenson, Jimmy Roberts and Jean Guy Talbot. &#9632;

Blues Still Flying High With Great Collection Of Hungry Vetsz Rookies

<div class="byline">&#x2014;By Bill Libby</div><h2>Kings Were Humiliated</h2>In the seventh and final game of their opening-round playoff series with the Minnesota North Stars, the Los Angeles Kings were being humiliated and their wives in the stands were close to tears and were reprimanding the fans around them who were booing and shouting insults at their floundering team. By the last period, when the Kings trailed by six goals, most of the wives had left, but Bill White&rsquo;s pretty wife lingered on awhile, rooting fiercely, if foolishly, every time the Kings made a move, until she, too, could take it no longer, and left, head proudly held high, but her lips quivering.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-02605/2476210-1-eng-US/f0011-022.jpg" title="f0011-02" width="263" height="425"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bruce Hood</figcaption></div>The Kings had blown three two-goal leads in the series and now they were being put to rout at the finish. Old Terry Sawchuk, who was so great for so many years, but should not have been in there now, would not quit. His face was hidden behind his mask as the fans heaped garbage on him until the final siren sounded. The Kings might have slumped off, but instead turned toward the North Stars, who were hugging each other in justified joy, and shook hands with each as the traditional line formed on ice. It was a touching scene. Sadly, no one thought to congratulate referees Bruce Hood and Art Skov, who worked the last two games in L. A. splendidly.Owner Jack Kent Cooke, manager Larry Regan and coach Red Kelly were so sold on their players all season they seemed shocked when anyone suggested the team was imperfect and might not go all the way, but even when their players let them down, they pulled themselves together and, proving they were quality, performed with considerable class at the end. In turn, each went into the Minnesota dressing room to congratulate owner Walter Bush, manager-coach Wren Blair and the players. Cooke, who hates to lose, but is a far more gracious loser than those who do not know him might expect, summoned a smile and paid his respects. Kelly, who is a gentleman in every sense of the world, wished all well. Regan, a sensitive soul under his tough Irish exterior, urged the Stars to reach the finals.<h2>Stars Won In Clutch</h2>The stars were realistic about their chances, and the obstacles they had to face and what they had to do to overcome these obstacles all the way, which might have been the difference in this series, so it was not surprising if they still were realistic, if rejoicing in . victory. There was some whooping and hollering, but not as much as you might have expected. It had been a tough series and now this was a tired team. Wayne Connelly, who with Cesare Maniago was the heart of the Minnesota performance, said, &ldquo;May be they were a better team in some ways. Certainly they had us on the ropes, But when it came to the clutch, we had it and they didn&rsquo;t. Gee, but you feel good when you face pressure like we did and come through.&rdquo; Blair said, &lsquo;&lsquo;Now we have to play St. Louis and we&rsquo;ll try to beat them, but no matter what happens now,.we&rsquo;ve had a season we can be proud of.&rdquo; A brilliant leader, he overcame great agony to pull his club through.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-03527/2476203-1-eng-US/f0011-032.jpg" title="f0011-03" width="249" height="399"><figcaption class="caption-body">Cesare Maniago</figcaption></div>In the Kings&rsquo; dressing room, the disspirited losers quietly dressed and packed to depart. They'd had a pretty good season, but not what they through it was going to be, and they&rsquo;d settle for 55,000 less in bonus money each. These are not wealthy super-stars and they and their families could have used the money after years of frustration in the shadows. Little Howie Menard, who never gives less than his best, said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s sad when you see guys work their guts out as these guys have ail season and then see it come to nothing at the end. &ldquo;I tried to congratulate Howie Hughes on a good series, but he is tough and he is not satisfied with being second best, and he shrugged and made a face and muttered a dejected profanity.As I left, Red Kelly was taking his medicine like a man, standing up to discuss the details of the painful defeat again and again with writers, some of whom, like this one, may never know the hockey he does, but who feel compelled to write what they believe and to criticize some of his moves along the way. The season was over, but Kelly had not quit yet.And in the press room, waiting for Red, as well as for her fourth child, pretty Andra Kelly smiled through her sorrow and said, &ldquo;See you next year.&rdquo; And then a thought struck her, and she said, &ldquo;If we&rsquo;re back. If they'll have us back after this.&rdquo; And she laughed a little, but just a little.Have the Kellys back? If it was up to this writer, they could have a lifetime contract. Who else could take compliments and criticism alike so graciously? After observing Kelly in his first full season as a coach, I rather think it will be mostly compliments in the long run. And there really is more than just one season, even if it does not seem so in the pride of victory and despair of defeat on a night in April.<h2>Meeting His Old Boss</h2>Blair was especially pleased that now he would be going against his old boss, St. Louis manager Lynn Patrick, in the expansion finals. Both suffered severely over the years with the lowly Boston Bruins, so expansion has been a blessing to their spirits. And success sits well on Patrick, who may deservedly be the best-liked man in sports. Blair also pointed out that it was the two teams that loaded up with costly minor league franchises, L.A. and Philly, that fell out before the finals. But are men like Cooke and Bill Putnam to be criticized for paying heavily to secure extra talent for their teams? Hardly. But it is a noteworthy freak of a freakish season and freakish playoffs.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-04442/2476196-1-eng-US/f0011-042.jpg" title="f0011-04" width="249" height="415"><figcaption class="caption-body">Wren Blair</figcaption></div>St. Louis and Philadelphia staged a free for all in one of their series games that resulted in 53,800 in fines. St. Louis was leading 1-0 in the game that could have clinched the series, when a Philadelphia rookie, Andre Lacroix, scored with only 15 seconds to play, and St. Louis lost it in overtime when goalie Glenn Hall slipped and fell attempting a save. Still, St. Louis fought back to win the finale in Philly in a series that left Scotty Bowman limp. With antiques like Dickie Moore and Doug Harvey, he&rsquo;s been hanging tough.Chicago and New York were tied in their series and tied in the fifth game when another rookie, Bobby Schmautz, who was not considered good enough to play for L.A.&rsquo;s last place minor-league team in the West last season, flipped the puck toward the net and turned to the bench to be replaced. His 80-footer caromed off someone&rsquo;s skate and slipped into the New York net somehow and it gave Chicago a flukey win, from which they proceeded to eliminate the depressed Rangers. All it gave Chicago, however, was a berth in the eastern finals against Montreal, which is worth a lot of money, but not a lot of happiness.It is the Canadiens year. It will be their thirteenth Stanley Cup triumph. How long will it take some of the new teams to win the Cup?Sadly, and sometimes hockey is a very sad game, it may be a very long time. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY CHARLEY BARTON</div>BUFFALO, N.Y. &ndash;Most of the players had returned to their off-season homes and trainer Frank Christie was getting ready to pack away the equipment for the summer when thieves broke into the Buffalo Bisons&rsquo; dressing room in Memorial Auditorium and stole some $2,000 worth of skates, sticks and other gear.Although the team is insured against such losses, the customary season-ending program was held up in order to complete an inventory of the stolen gear.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a good thing this didn&rsquo;t happen a week earlier when we were still in the playoffs with Quebec,&rdquo; Christie said. &ldquo;They took skates and everything they could get their hands on.&rdquo;&ldquo;Can you imagine our guys having to break in new skates in a playoff game?&rdquo; The dressing rooms here have been popular with sneak thieves for several years. Two years ago a number of Pittsburgh players were robbed while a game was being played.Three members of the Bisons &mdash; goalie Gilles Villemure, defenseman Allan Hamilton and center Dennis Hextall &mdash; were recalled by the parent New York Rangers for the Stanley Cup playoffs.Hextall was rhe only one of the trio to see any action in the Rangers&rsquo; openinground loss to the Chicago Black Hawks.ALONG THE BOARDS: The Bisons, who normally don&rsquo;t start their season-ticket campaign until mid-July, probably will get it rolling much earlier this summer. The hockey climate is excellent again in Western New York thanks to the working agreement with the Rangers, and the Bisons will take advantage to boost the sale of season tickets &hellip; Former Bison Billy Dea, now with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has returned to his home in nearby Crystal Beach, Ont., and has rejoined the sales staff of Molson&rsquo;s. &#9632;

<div class="image-hero"><img title="f0013-02" src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-02574/2476432-1-eng-US/f0013-022.jpg"></div>OAKLAND, Calif. &ndash;In addition to being the only sports arena in the United States capable of accommodating five major league sporting events, the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Complex also boasts one of the few &ldquo;carpeted&rdquo; locker rooms existing for hockey players.Installed in six hours by two carpet-installers, the 133 square yards of rugged-duty nylon-on vinyl matting was selected for its resistance to wear, masculine attractiveness, and ease of maintenance.Located in the &ldquo;home&rdquo; team locker room of the California Seals, the matting features a 100% cutpile nylon carpet surface with a thick, flexible vinyl backing. This is the same type of carpet matting that is used the year-round at building entrances to trap trackedin dirt, catch slush and water, and reduce floor wear and maintenance.The Seals&rsquo; players come in with their skates on, walk to dressing benches, or to their lockers, undress, and head for the showers. The shower room adjoins the locker room, and players track in water.Returning from the ice or from the showers, the players find that the carpet-top matting provides the safety they need, preventing dangerous slips or slides on the floor.Installed directly over the concrete floor, the carpet matting protects edges of the Seals&rsquo;skates, absorbs and holds the melted ice carried in on the skates. For players in skates or in street shoes, the carpet matting provides a cushioned step, and even when wet, never permits pools of water to collect as on hard-surface flooring.Billed as the nation&rsquo;s most complete indoor-outdoor sports and entertainment center, the Coliseum Complex is located at the geographic center of Northern California&rsquo;s most populous area. The multi-purpose three-tie red stadium is designed for major league baseball and football. The 420-foot diameter arena has a permanent 85&rsquo; &times; 200&rsquo; ice floor and seats 13,000 for hockey games. Sitework and excavation began April, 1964 and the complex was opened in the Fall of 1966.Actual installation of the nylon - on-vinyl matting took place just two days after the Seals played their first home game in the new sports center, November 9, 1966. The Dutro Company, Oakland, California, recommended that the matting be cut to size and simply positioned on the floor, without cementing or taping to the original floor surface.Even without bonding to the floor surface in any way, the matting lies flat because the heavy vinyl hugs the concrete and stays put. Unlike rubber, which has a tendency to curl, rot, and become brittle with age, vinyl remains flexible and flat. This characteristic is especially important in this installation, since the vinyl &ldquo;gives&rdquo; instead of being cut by the blades of hockey skates. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY VIN CIMINI</div>PROVIDENCE, R,L&mdash;Down 2 games to 1 and fighting for all they were worth to upend the Quebec Aces, the Rhode Island Reds fell short in their last ditch effort and bowed out of the American Hockey League playoffs before a standing ovation from their loyal fans.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-03533/2476463-1-eng-US/f0013-032.jpg" title="f0013-03" width="240" height="415"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dave Creighton</figcaption></div>With about a minute left in the hockey game and the Reds trailing the Aces by a 4-3 count, some of the spectators in the R.I. Auditorium began filing out of their seats. And as the clock ticked the seconds away and with the Reds giving that last ounce of drive which had characterized their play all season long, the some four thousand still remaining in their seats slowly rose to their feet.Above them the narrow promenades were jam-packed with those who started the walks to their cars early-but no one left.As the final buzzer went off a deafening applause began. Both clubs mobbed their goaltenders. Although the Aces had come out on top in this game, no one had really lost.Several minutes later the ovation showed no signs of ceasing Most of the players had exited to the dressing rooms and as the last player skated off the ice the applause got so loud you couldn&rsquo;t hear yourself think. They had beaten the Springfield Kings 3 games to 1 and in doing so became only the second club in the team&rsquo;s 42-year history to have broken the home ice advantage in the playoffs.&ldquo;I was sort of torn after the game,&rdquo; spoke Creighton. &ldquo;I suppose I didn&rsquo;t know whether to smile or cry.&ldquo;It seems that everyone gets like that when you really feel good inside and can&rsquo;t really express your thanks enough.&ldquo;The guys on this team are the greatest you could ask for Everyone worked his heart out to prove something to a lot of people who are smiling out of the back of their faces right now.&ldquo;The fans were great and all I can say is that they&rsquo;ll have more to cheer about next year. There&rsquo;s no reason we can&rsquo;t win the Calder Cup We nearly did it this year. Anyone who saw us in the playoffs can tell you that.&rdquo;And up in the press box after the game, general manager Buster Clegg looked on as the fans and the state paid tribute to their hockey team and its coach. Vanquished Reds End Exciting Hockey Year Despite Playoff Ouster

<div class="byline">BY JOHN WHITE</div>SEATTLE, Wash.&mdash;A battle to the wire for the Western Hockey League&rsquo;s Lester Patrick Cup developed as Seattle Totems defeated the Portland Buckaroos in five games to win the WHL playoff title for a second straight year.The Totems had advanced to the finals by wiping out the Phoenix Roadrunners in four straight. Seattle&rsquo;s rink was available for only two home games.And Seattle Coach Bill MacFarland was quick to point out that a week&rsquo;s delay in the Portland-San Diego series &mdash; because Portland ice wasn&rsquo;t available during that stretch &mdash; was the reason that the Hatems couldn&rsquo;t have their rightful chance at three games on home ice.Still the Portlanders screamed about injustice as though it was the first time it ever had happened in hockeyNo one mentioned that the Bucks of &lsquo;62 &mdash; also league champs &mdash; were forced to both open and close in Spokane. And no one mentioned that Seattle in &lsquo;63 was forced to play all seven games of its championship series against San Francisco on the Seals&rsquo; home ice &mdash; and still forced the Seals to overtime of the final game before losing.There also were screams in Portland that the sixth game of the final series should be played on the Bucks&rsquo; home ice, instead of on neutral ice in Vancouver as scheduled. There was talk of violation of league rules.No one recalled in print Portland&rsquo;s semifinal series against Vancouver in &lsquo;61, when ice was not available in Oregon. Portland used Victoria as home base and the Bucks and Canucks ferried and flew back and forth, with Portland winning the best-of-five series in four games.On all of these pleasant little notes, the championship series got under way in Seattle.The first game itself was a classic of defensive play. The Totems won, 2-0, as Don Head blanked his one-time teammates behind checking so solid he was required to stop only 19 shots.The second game in Seattle was one that Totem fans and Buckaroo players never will forget.As the second period started, powerful Portland was breezing along with a 6-2 lead.Two quick Seattle goals &mdash; scored in the first 76 seconds &mdash; cut the margin to 6-4. Then it was 6-5.With just 19 seconds to play, the Totem nets were empty with six players on attack for a faceoff in front of the Buckaroo goal. Bang went the draw from Larry Lund to Bill Dineen. Dineen blister a shot through a forest of legs. Charlie Holmes tipped it with his stick. And the score was tied, 6-6.At 6:09 of overtime, Guyle Fielder rifled home the winning goal that climaxed one of the greatest comebacks in Western League playoff history.&ldquo;We waited four years for that one,&rdquo; sighed Totem Coach Bill MacFarland.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s just too bad that there weren&rsquo;t 13,000 people here to see it,&rdquo; said General Manager Murray Costello. &#9632;

SEATTLE, Wash. &ndash;Until this spring, about the only similarity between professional hockey and swimming was that water is Involved in both sports.But swimming meets are famous-almost boring-for producing new records every time a competition is scheduled.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-01590/2476646-1-eng-US/f0015-012.jpg" title="f0015-01" width="262" height="423"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gordon Fashoway</figcaption></div>And was true in the Western Hockey League playoffs this spring.Nearly every major all-time individual playoff record was set or improved.Two team captains and playoff finalists &mdash; Guyle Fielder of the Seattle Totems and Art Jones of the Portland Buckaroos &mdash; were battling to the wire to become the all-time playoff scoring leader of the Western League.With a potential of four games to play, Fielder was on top with 95 career playoff points, but Jones was closing fast with 94.Jones, meanwhile, fractured the all-time playoff goal-scoring record when he sniped the game winner in Portland&rsquo;s 4-1 victory over Seattle in the third game of the championship series.The goal was the 38th of Jones&rsquo; WHL playoff career, breaking the old mark of 37 shared by a former Buckaroo captain, Gordon Fashoway, and a long-time Calgary Stampeder, Sid Finney.Fielder, meanwhile, already was well out in front in playoff assists and started the fourth game of the final series with a career total of 71. Jones was second with 56.Both Arnie Schmautz of the Portland Buckaroos and Fielder broke the all-time record for games played in Western League playoffs early in the championship series.The old record of 90 games played was owned by Fashoway. After three games in the finals, Schmautz could look back on a career total of 92 and Fielder on a total of 91. Barring Injuries, Schmautz would be the new all time leader for at last a year.When this spring&rsquo;s playoffs started, the all-time playoff leader In penalty minutes was retired Frank Arnett, who drew 120 of them with Winnipeg, Seattle and Los Angeles.After the third game of the playoff finals, Arnett ranked third as a pair of Portland Buckaroo defense - men took over the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.Doug Messier was out In front with 137 minutes, and Connie Madigan was second with 132.They could battle this one out among themselves.Meanwhile, two team records already had been set early In the finals.Seattle, before the streak was snapped in the third game of the finals in Portland, had won 11 straight playoff games. We had to work to win every game had been tough in the series with Fort Worth,&rdquo; said Tulsa Oilers&rsquo; coach John McLellan after his club swept fast the wings 4-0 to wen the Central Professional Hockey League J.J. &ldquo;Jack&rdquo; Adams Cup finals.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-01434/2476732-1-eng-US/f0016-012.jpg" title="f0016-01" width="251" height="461"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gerry Meehan</figcaption></div>&ldquo;We won two games at home and it was satisfying to win the first one on foreign ice. Now my young players know what the pressure is like and I liked the way they stood up to it,&rdquo; added the popular coach who is in his first season behind the bench in the pro ranks.In their semi-final seven-game set with the Oklahoma City Blazers, the Oilers outscored their opposition 24-18 and McLellan expressed praise for goaltenders Serge Aubry and Al Smith.Aubry gave up 13 goals in five appearances for 2.60 goals-against mark and Smith was solved for five tallies in two contests a 2.50 average.Gerry Meehan was the leading point-getter for the Oilers over the seven games counting three goals and assisting on five. Len Haley had three goals and four assists and Ken Campbell, Jim Dorey and Andre Hinse each picked up six points. Ron Ward, Dan Johnson, and Campbell along with Haley and Meehan each triggered three goals in the series.Tom Martin joined the Oilers on loan from Toronto Marlboros of the Ontario Hockey Association junior ranks after defenseman Ray Dupont suffered a shoulder injury.Oilers are in the finals for the third time in their four seasons in the CPHL. They lost the championship bowing to St. Paul Rangers 4-2 in 1965 and 4-0 to Oklahoma City in 1966.Meanwhile Fern Flamans&rsquo; Fort Worth Wings had ousted the Kansas City Blues, 3-1 in their best-of-five semi-final set outscoring Doug Harvey&rsquo;s crew, 16-13. In their five-game quarter-final series sidelinging the Dallas Black Hawks, the Wings showed an 11-9 scoring edge.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve played nine games to get into the final and the boys feel they can keep going. In those nine games we scored 27 goals and when you get three goals per average in playoff competition, you are moving. I know the Oilers are high-scoring but we&rsquo;ll be working to hold them down,&rdquo; Flaman said with optimism.Fort Worth entered their series with Oilers boasting centreman Rick McCann as their leading point-getter with four goals and nine assists. Doug Roberts followed with three goals and seven assists and Dave Richardson and defenseman Bart Crashley were next with nine points apiece. Gary Marsh was the top sniper over nine games with five goals.Rene LeClerc, a centreman; Ed Hatoum and forward Fred Speck from the Hamilton Wings, ousted in the Ontario Junior Hockey Association playoffs, joined Fort Worth for the final and were expected to see action.Goalie Bud Blom played the nine games for the Wings as they got by Dallas and Kansas City, counted one shutout in the process and referring to his netminder Flaman said, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s played well and we&rsquo;ll just have to give him more help from backchecking and a tighter defence.&rdquo;Flaman, like McLellan is spending his first season in the Central Pro League.In Dallas, after a lapse of 19 years, professional hockey returned last winter and the CPHL franchise proved to be successful.&ldquo;I see a great future for the Black Hawks here. The fans took us to heart and we had a tremendous season,&rdquo; said coach Bob Kromm after guiding the team to a third-place finish in the circuit&rsquo;s Southern Division and forcing the Fort Worth Wings to five games before bowing out in the quarter-final playoffs.With 35 regular season games and two playoff contests, the Black Hawks attracted 105,091 fans.A season ticket drive is already underway for next season headed by a group of boosters called the Hockey Chiefs and under the direction of publicity director Bob Campbell special promotion events are already in the formation stage.Kromm was optimistic looking ahead to next season noting that the team for the 1968-69 term will be more experienced.&ldquo;Of course quite a few of the players who were here last season will get a chance to make the parent Chicago Black Hawks but they are a packed team at the moment. I look for goalies Jack Norris and Bob Sneddon, defenseman Paul Shmyr and forwards Brian McDonald and Kerry Bond to be given a thorough appraisal at the Chicago camp this fall,&rdquo; said Kromm.Bond might have to wait as he was suspended for the first month of next season and fined $150 for a run-in with linesmen and referee Bill Beagan in a playoff game with Fort Worth.Players expected to return are: Jean-paul Leblanc, Garth Rizzuto, Jim Stanfield, Steve Latinovich, Ray McKay and Jim Graham.Kromm mentioned a pair of goalies now playing in the Canadian amateur ranks, Pete McDuffe and Gary Brown as possible candidates and forward Terry Caffery, a centreman playing for the Toronto junior Marlboros.At Memphis, General manager and coach John Muckier, who guided the Memphis South Stars to a third place finish in the Southern Division, said he was undecided as to recommending that the Minnesota South Stars place their development team in Memphis next season.&ldquo;There are many things to be considered like the availability of playing talent comparable to the calibre of the league, suitable playing dates in the Mid-South Coliseum and fan support through season subscribers,&rdquo; said the young hockey executive before leaving to scout the National Hockey League Stanley Cup playoffs.Over the past season, the South Stars won 24 games and tied 12 in 70 outings finishing 12 points back of the second-place Kansas City Blues and 25 behind the pacesetting Tulsa Oilers.&ldquo;I thought we gained some friends and made some new fans over the past season and if we come back here or some other team comes in at least they&rsquo;ll be starting even. 1 think we overcame some of the bitterness toward hockey and in itself that is an accomplishment,&rdquo; Muckier added.&ldquo;We did quite well with the players that were left with us at the end of the season but the future depends on the good, young players that the Minnesota organization acquires. Barrie Meissner, Steve Sutherland and Don Herriman were the young players in our lineup that showed top promise. &#9632;

Tulsa Oilers Capture CPHL Title Sweeping Past Fort Worth In Final

DETROIT, Mich.&mdash;Jim Lorentz, 21-year-old contreman with the Oklahoma City Blazers has been named rookie-ofthe-year in the Central professional Hockey League.The freshman pivotman who graduated from the 1966-67 Niagara Falls Flyers of the Ontario Junior Hockey Association, played in all 70 games for the Blazers scoring 33 goals and drawing 50 assists for 83 points, two less than Ron Ward of the Tulsa Oilers who won the scoring championship.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-02364/2476763-1-eng-US/f0016-022.jpg" title="f0016-02" width="251" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jim Lorentz</figcaption></div>Lorentz, five-feet-eleven and weighing 175 pounds, beat out Andre Hinse and Gerry Meehan both of Tulsa in the voting as the top first-year player in the league.Previous winners of the rookie award were; Serge Savard (Houston) 1966-67; Doug Roberts (Memphis) 1965-66; Mike Walton (Tulsa) 1964-65 and Gary Peters (Omaha) and Poul Popeil (St. Louis) who tied for the honors in the 1963-64 season. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY BOB REED</div>TOLEDO, O.&mdash;With the Turner Cup safely tucked away in Muskegon, the International Hockey League was preparing to wind up its season affairs at a meeting in Columbus on May 6.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-04140/2476995-1-eng-US/f0018-042.jpg" title="f0018-04" width="266" height="432"><figcaption class="caption-body">Andy Mulligan</figcaption></div>This session will be devoted mainly to a report on the financial condition of the league and of various clubs and a general clearing up of business over the past season. At this time, a date and place for the annual meeting will be determined.The annual meeting, expected to be held shortly after the preliminary session in Columbus, promises to be highly Important. Among the items expected to be discussed at that time are the future of the Port Huron franchise, the possible expansion of the circuit to take in Flint, Mich, and a decision on the league commissioner.John F. Wismer, owner of the Port Huron Flags, has stated repeatedly that he sees no way of continuing operation under the present circumstances. He indicated a loss of $30,000 over the past season and a total loss of $83,000 in the six years the club has operated in Port Huron.Wismer, who would like to see the Flags continue in Port Huron, said he was ready to listen to any proposition that would salvage the club. He was hopeful the league would accept a ticket participation plan in which all members would share In the profits of other teams. Also, he felt that the addition of Flint would be a boost to hockey in Port Huron.Frank Gallagher, a long time official of the IHL, including a number of years as commissioner, was hopeful of getting a franchise in Flint and that city&rsquo;s acceptance was reported to hinge on the question of whether a new building in process of construction there would be completed in time for the start of next season.Although nothing was expected to be done at the preliminary meeting in Columbus, there was apt to be some talk of a commissioner to succeed Andy Mulligan of Toledo should he decide not to be a candidate. Before the start of the past season he indicated it would be his last but it is believed in many quarters he would accept the job again if he receives the support of the club owners. Like any other league head he has run into opposition but it was generally conceded that his decisions have been reached with firmness and honesty.Meanwhile the Muskegon Mohawks were still celebrating their great triumph, marking a rise from sixth place to the season championship and the Turner Cup victory. Their achievement was especially notable for the fact that they started with only three players from last year&rsquo;s squad.Muskegon had almost every honor the league had to hand out: the Turner Cup for playoff title, the Fred Huber trophy for season championship, the James Norris Trophy for leading goalie, (Bob Perani and Tim Tabor) the Gary Longman trophy for &ldquo;rookie of the year&rdquo; (Gary Ford), the Governor&rsquo;s Trophy for leading defenseman (Carl Brewer), the Lamoureux Trophy for leading scorer (Ford) and the league selection of Moose Lallo as leading coach.In addition, Board Chairman Jerry DeLise was named minor league executive of the year by THE HOCKEY NEWS. This selection was hailed around the IHL with pleasure, the officials feeling that it represented a great boost for the circuit. At Fort Wayne, Ken Ullyot, oldest general manager in the league in point of service, said &ldquo;I was thrilled with the recognition given Jerry. He was richly deserving of the honor.&rdquo; &#9632;

WINNIPEG, Man.&mdash;One of the most spirited Allan Cup battles in years was in the books for this city as the St. Boniface Mohawks, coached by former National Hockey Leaguer Gary Aidcorn, squared off against Victoriaville Tigers in a best-of-seven championship series.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-01336/2477207-1-eng-US/f0019-012.jpg" title="f0019-01" width="254" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gary Alderman</figcaption></div>The Tigers, who breezed through the Eastern Canada final by bouncing Toronto Marlboros in four straight games, are attempting to become the first team towin the Allan Cup on the road since Chatham Maroons turned the trick in 1960 with a victory out West.Since &lsquo;60, Galt Terriers, Windsor Bulldogs, Sherbrooke Beavers and Drummondville Eagles all won in their own bailiwicks in oddnumbered years. Western winners at home were Trail Smoke Eaters in &lsquo;62, Winnipeg Maroons in &lsquo;64 and Drumbeller Miners in &lsquo;66.Victoriaville, coached by Leo Poliquin, is the fourth straight team from Quebec to earn the right to represent the East in the Allan Cup final. Both clubs are shooting for their first Allan Cup.St. Boniface bolstered its ranks considerably for the series. The Mohawks, who swept their best-of-five Western final from Drumheller miners, added Butch Goring from Canada&rsquo;s Eastern National team, along with Jim Benzelock and Gord M.iilinoski from Winnipeg Jets of the Western Canada Junior League.The Tigers have also strengthened for the final with the addition of four players from the Quebec Senior League. The newcomers were goalie Andy Payette, defenseman Dino Mascotto and centre Brian Elwell from St. Hyacinthe, and Forward Jean-Claude Garneau from Drummondville.In the Meme rial Cup playdowns, Estevan Bruins and Niagara Falls look like probable opponents in the final which is slated for the East this year.Estevan won the first three games of their Western Canada final from Penticton Broncos, having their most trouble in the second contest in which they had to destroy a 2-0 Penticton lead before coming from behind for a 5-4 triumph.Niagara had its problems with OHA Junior &lsquo;A&rsquo; League champion Kitchener Rangers before winning the playoff title 4-3, with one game tied, in an eight-game, bitterlycontested series. Niagara then proceeded to eke out a 5-4 victory over Verdun Maple Leafs in the opener of the best-of-five Eastern final.The Niagara-Verdun affair was spiced by off-the-ice squabbles centering around claims by Niagara general manager Hap Emms that Verdun &ldquo;pick-up&rdquo; Rene Robert was ineligible because of a pro tryout with Tulsa Oilers of the Central League. <div class="byline">By Tom Monahan</div>BOSTON, Mass.Along with their first National Hockey League playoff in nine seasons, the 1967-68 campaign brought the Bruins an impressive list of individual honors.Bobby Orr appeared to be a cincit to be named to the first all-Star defense in but his second season of NHL play despite several minor injuries and surgery to his left knee that sidelined him for a month in the final half of the season.Derek Sanderson was certain to be named the league&rsquo;s rookie of the year to succeed Orr and this would be the first time in history Bruins&rsquo; rookies have won the Calder Trophy back-to-back.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-01203/2477283-1-eng-US/f0020-012.jpg" title="f0020-01" width="526" height="1166"><figcaption class="caption-body">DEREK SANDERSON&hellip;Certain Rookie Of Year</figcaption></div>On a more modest basis, Phil Espositio was runner-up for the scoring title and captured both the Eddie Shore Trophy as the Bruins&rsquo; most valuable player from the garden galleryites and the Elizabeth C. Dufresne Trophy as the Bruins&rsquo; outstanding player on home ice in a vote of the Boston hockey writers.One unofficial award that is just as important to the Bruins&rsquo; brass, however, was Teddy Green&rsquo;s performance that rated him the nod as comeback player of the year.Knee injuries that required three operations had lowered Green&rsquo;s effeciency virtually to nil in the two previous seasons. When he reported to training camp at London, Ont. last September there was serious doubt that he would ever be able to play up to NHL standard again.At the time, Don Awrey and Dallas Smith still were uncertain quantities as well, so the Bruins defensive set up was tabbed as the sore spot of the squad.The rugged and determined Green made no promises. He said only that he had worked hard to get his legs into shape and that he thought both knees were sufficiently strong to stand the gaff of regular season play.By passing the exhibition games, Green started the season slowly. He took his regular turn on the ice but didn&rsquo;t show the skating style or zip of his all-star performances of three seasons ago.By the time he had a dozen games under his belt, there seemed to be a change in Green, however. As he got more ice time, he became more confident and more aggressive.&ldquo;I discovered there really was nothing wrong with my knees,&rdquo; said Green,&rdquo; and if I did seem slow coming back it was just that I need time to get the rust of practically two years of the ice, out of my system.&rdquo;By mid-season, it was obvious the 195-pound Boston strong boy was back to at least 75 per cent of his normal ability. This was very satisfactory to Sinden.&lsquo;&lsquo;Teddy has done the job we wanted,&rdquo; said Coach Harry Sinden. &lsquo;&lsquo;We had hoped he might be able to play but actually he has surprised us by playing so well.&rdquo;Sinden had seen nothing yet, however. For when Orr injured his knee and had to undergo an operation for removal of a cartilage, Green really blossomed.With Orr out of the lineup the Bruins needed a take charge guy on defense and Green who had been the take-charge guy in previous years did what came naturally.&lsquo;&lsquo;He was great In the last five weeks of the season,&rdquo; saidSinden. &ldquo;And he played a heckuva series against Montreal. He Is more than 100 per cent now.
