Spokane Jets Flying Too High For Rest of Teams In Loop
NELSON, B.C. Spokane Jets continue to make the Western International Hockey League championship race a one - team competition while Nelson Maple Leafs and Kimberley Dynamiters maintained their battle for second place. The Jets won their 18th consecutive home game last weekend, remaining unbeaten on Coliseum ice this season, and further increased their league-lead over Nelson. Defending champion Nelson have finally began to show the championship form from last year, giving signs they are about to snap the month long slump that has plaged the club. Nelson had to ride the red-hot netminding of rookie Dave Halme to take a 1-0 victory over Kimberley and remain in sole possession of second position. Blair ‘Discovers’ Power Play Secret, Lifts North Stars’ First Place Hopes
TWIN CITIES. Minn. - It has taken nearly two-thirds of the season, but manager-coach Wren Blair believes that he has finally found an effective power play combination for his Minnesota North Stars. In the wake of eight power play goals over a stretch of six games from Jan. 25 to Feb. 4, Blair was hopeful that the pace would continue long enough for his team to catch Philadelphia in the NHL’s red hot West Division race. It doesn’t figure to be easy, especially after the Flyers’ back-to-back victories at home over Chicago and Toronto on Feb. 3 and 4. Seals Optimistic Of Catching Playoff But Time Growing Short For New Team
OAKLAND. Calif. - Time is running out on the struggling Oakland Seals. Although mathematically still holding a chance to make the National Hockey League’s Western Division Stanley Cup playoff the seals have been hammered by every bad break in the book-scheduling, injuries, sickness, slumps. But now the Seals are at the point where, regardless of what problems may hit them, they’ve got to stay with it, to make up 13 points in 25 games. Right now, the Oaklanders are in the middle of a six-game home stand, their longest home series of the season, and a stand which surely will make or break their playoff hopes. Jones Nets 350th WHL Goll After Swinging To Helmet
PORTLAND. ORE. - Portland Buckaroo Captain Art Jones, perhaps affected by the death of Bill Masterton, has put on a helmet for the first time in his 11 professional seasons. Now Jones wonders why he waited so long. In his first game with a helmet, the veteran center scored the first goal and the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Phoenix. In his second game, he earned three assists in a 7-0 triumph over Hershey. In his third game, he scored three assists, Including the game-winner in overtime, as the Buckaroos nipped Vancouver. 4-3. Three games with a helmet — eight points. And Jones moved into second place in the Western League scoring race 53 points in 46 contests.
