NELSON, B.C. Spokane Jets continue to make the Western International Hockey League championship race a one - team competition while Nelson Maple Leafs and Kimberley Dynamiters maintained their battle for second place. The Jets won their 18th consecutive home game last weekend, remaining unbeaten on Coliseum ice this season, and further increased their league-lead over Nelson. Defending champion Nelson have finally began to show the championship form from last year, giving signs they are about to snap the month long slump that has plaged the club. Nelson had to ride the red-hot netminding of rookie Dave Halme to take a 1-0 victory over Kimberley and remain in sole possession of second position. Defense Seen Key To Kings’ Playoff Hopes

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – If the Los Angeles Kings are going to hang on to squeeze into the playoffs in the one-third of the season that remains at this writing, their defensemen are going to have to play up to their potential. Only Detroit has given up more goals than L.A. in the NHL this season. Only a few of the Kings’ forwards backcheck strongly enough to permit the Kings’ defensemen to move up to meet opposition rushes at the blue-line. Only a few of the Kings’ forwards help out the Kings’ defensemen on defense. There are no hitters on the entire team, not even on the rearguard. The Kings’ defensemen, scrambling to do the job on skill and without physical strength, are getting trapped out of position as the opposition hammers hard-to-handle shots…

Montrealers Depth Sways Hawks’ Coach CHICAGO. III. — Billy Reay, the coach of the Chicago Black Hawks, has always held Montreal’s Canadiens in highest esteem. It could emamate from his playing days with the Habitants but it doesn’t. Reay recognizes hockey power when he sees it and take it from the head man of the Tribe, the Canadiens are still the team to beat for the National Hockey League title. Reay said it at the outset of the year and reiterated it around the first of the new year when the Canadiens were actually languishing in last place. “They won’t stay there long,” Reay was reported to have said. “Nobody is going to catch that team now,” Reay was quoted as telling Montreal hockey writer Red Fisher. “Too much depth, too much of everything,” moaned Ready…
