Holmes Most Improved Player Among WHL’s Offensive Stars

SEATTLE, Wash.— Most “improved” hockey player — at least offensively — In the Western Hockey League this season is Chuck Holmes, veteran Seattle Totems’ winger, with Fred Hilts of the San Diego Gulls ranking second. Holmes, in 24 games played through December 9, scored 18 points, 13 more than he collected in the same number of games last season. Snowstorms in the Southwest and Midwest slowed Szura’s crosscountry auto trip from Oakland, after he was loaned to the Bisons by the Seals. Travelling with his wife and two small sons, Szura was snowbound for two days in Nebraska. Ouellette was hurt when he crashed into the boards and struck his head on the ice after being checked by Quebec’s Terry Ball. He was hospitalized for several days, and released when x-rays revealed he did not suffer a fracture. Szura, the American League’s all-star center two years ago, had been off…

Ron Jones Pride Of Edmonton Junior Kings

EDMONTON, Alta. – Pressure weighs heavily on any 16-year-old kid who is trying to jump straight from Midget to Junior “A” hockey. The pressure is twice as heavy when you’re trying to keep a regular defensive berth on one of Canada’s all-time great junior teams. You’re being paid to produce, and you’re constantly being compared with three other defensemen on the team, all of whom are veterans. Your coach is Bill Gadsby, one of the finest defense men ever to perform in the NHL, so you know he’ll spot every error you make. And you know there are dozens of eager kids waiting to take your place if you fail. Such is the pressure weighing on young Ron Jones. If he were nervous, it would come as no surprise. But Jones isn’t worried. In fact,…
