NHL CRACKS DOWN ON BRAWLS
MONTREAL, Que.- The National Hockey League is determined to cut down on the incessant brawling that it is spreading among league games in recent weeks. NHL president Clarence Campbell, before departing for Los Angeles and the opening of Jack Kent Cooke’s fashionable new hockey Forum, lowered the axe on members of the Oakland Seals and Boston Bruins and two NHL coaches — Bert Olmstead of the Seals and Montreal’s Toe Blake — both for violating league rules and stepping out on the playing ice surface. Campbell handed Olmstead a $200 fine for taking up a hockey stick and chasing a fan by way of the Boston Garden ice level. Campbell contended that Olmstead had no right to leave the bench and pursue the fan. Going on the ice cost Olmstead an automatic $50…


Francis Blasts Handling Of Faceoffs By Referees
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Emile Francis, the New York Rangers Cat on a Cool Ice Sheet is scratching up a feud with the National Hockey League’s refereeing staff over the way the arbiters are handling faceoffs. “This year they let the linesmen handle the faceoffs for the most part on the theory that the referee could then watch the play better and call more penalties like faceoff interference. Instead, the linesmen handle the faceoffs and nobody calls any faceoff interference penalties after the first two weeks of the season. Why bother having a rule if it is not going to be enforced,’’griped Francis recently. The Cat also is irritated over the practice of throwing both men out after a couple of false starts on faceoffs. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Want to know why Ed Hoekstra has been the surprise player on the Flyers this year? Just examine the halo on his head.
