Bill White Impressive Along Blueline

LOS ANGELES. Calif.— The Los Angeles Kings lack any super-scorer, but have a balanced attack. One of the strongest skating clubs in the entire NHL, they have pressured opposing defenses heavily. They have been outscoring several established clubs and all other expansion clubs, with the result that they have been flirting with first place in their circuit since the season began. Their main problem has been defense, the reason they have been unable to mount a long winning streak and pull away from their rivals. They have been giving up as many goals as any club in the league and a lot more than most of the clubs, more than three goals a game. Their goal-keeping combine ranks dead last in the league. Yet, the goal-tending cannot be faulted heavily. Wayne Rutledge, who has…

Bob Woytowich Named North Stars ’ Captain

TWIN CITIES, Minn.— The Minnesota North Stars, who have not had a permanent captain since the start of the NHL season on Oct. 11, changed all that by naming Bob Woytowich as their leader in St. Louis Dec. 2. “They’ve made an excellent choice,” said manager-coach Wren Blair, who rates the 26-year-old defenseman as his steadiest performer on the blue line. Woytowich, a 5-111/2, 195-pound native of Winnipeg, played two full seasons and part of a third with Boston before being chosen as the North Stars’ No. 3 pick in the expansion draft last June. “Bob isn’t a big hitter as defensemen go,” said Blair, “but he doesn’t shy away from contact either. One of his biggest assets is getting to and clearing the puck out of our zone. He’s the type of player…

BOSTON, Mass.— Bruins’ Captain Johnny Bucyk has passed Milt Schmidt’s career record as a Bruin by running his goal total to 232 … He now is after Milt’s record of 575 points and Bill Cowley’s record of 346 assists … He also is closing in on the 250-goal mark with 244 to his credit. The rest of the National Hockey League should know by now that the Bruins will not be intimidated … They were involved in their third donnybrook of the year and second in league play last week with Montreal … The Canadiens and Bruins tangled in the final exhibition game before the start of the season and previously had a bench clearing duel with Toronto … This one was precipitated when Terry Harper left the Canadien bench to assist…

Stars Show Determination Coming Back On The Road To Regain Winning Touch

TWIN CITIES, Minn.— The Minnesota North Stars may very well have come of age during a four - day period early this month when they won two games and tied another — all on the road — to end a miserable five-game losing streak. A club with less Intestinal fortitude might’ve folded following five consecutive setbacks — all to established East Division teams and four of which were on the road — but not Wren Blair’s Minnesotans. Instead they sailed into Montreal to tie the injury-ridden Canadiens after bowing to Boston the night before, then followed up with back-to-back victories over St. Louis (5-1) and Chicago (4-3) to solidify their hold on fourth place in the NHL’s East Division. The finest 96 hours in the expansion club’s early history had a generous sprinkling of…
