Amazing Howe Bettering Career - High Goal Year

DETROIT, Mich.— Gordie Howe never has gotten off to a faster start. After 21 seasons in the National hockey League, the 39-year-old Red Wing star is keeping pace with the finest year of his career. Howe has eight goals in the Wings’ first 11 games, bettering the pace he set 15 years ago during 1952-53 when he scored a career-high 49 goals. Through the years Howe has been a relatively slow starter considering the record number of goals he has produced. He has enjoyed only a handful of quick starts to rival 1952-53 when he scored six in the first nine games and this season … and each of them has produced a big year. Rochefort Proves-He Can Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A funny thing happened to Leon Rochefort on his way to becoming the Flyers’ early-s e a s o n scoring leader: He didn’t even have a goal at least until he met up with his old teammates the Montreal Canadiens. Rochefort, a veteran right-wing, had collected six points in the Flyers’ first seven games and all six came on assists. In fact, to simplify matters further, each assist came in a different game. Rochefort, of course, admitted it was unusual but was happy, nevertheless, that he was contributing some offensive punch to the club. “It is important that we score goals and not so important who gets them,” says Leon. “You can’t win when you don’t score.” Rochefort obviously had this in mind the night of Nov. 4 when he went into…
