Did Hawks Lose Too Much In NHL Expansion Draft? Replacements Below Par

CHICAGO, 111.– Things are so tough with the Black Hawks these days that Coach Billy Reay hasn *t had much chance to talk about good games. He had to content himself with discussing a good period and even those have been tough to single out. After a recent 5-1 beating by the Red Wings in Detroit Billy pondered the figures for a while and said; “Well, we were down 2-0 at one point in the first period and I couldn’t believe it. It should have been the other way around. But after the first period we sort of ran out of gas.” And that’s pretty much been the story of the defending league champions’ lives during the opening month of the season. MONTREAL, Que.- Canadiens play their first game of the season against Chicago Black Hawks this week, and many Habs are hoping that it will mark the end of a personal scoring famine. With the exception of Big Jean Beliveau and Yvan Cournoyer, most of the Canadians had been having a rough time finding the net through the first nine games of the season. Beliveau and Cournoyer had scored 13 of the team’s 22 goals, this accounting for nearly sixty percent of the production between them. Still looking for their first goal after nine games were potentially good scorers like John Ferguson and Claude Larose. Fergie was a 20-goal man last season, while Larose accounted for 19 markers. They played together on a line centered by Ralph Backstrom last year, and Toe Blake recently…

Wings’ Goalie Needs “Rest” Claims Abel

DETROIT. Mich. — Little Roger Crozier, professional hockey’s most troubled netminder, startled the Red Wings by announcing that he no longer has the desire to play big time hockey and was retiring. Crozier dropped the bomb after a horrendous weekend when the Red Wings lost two games to National Hockey League expansion teams—one a 6-4 shocker in which Crozier personally let the Los Angeles Kings ram five goals past him. Crozier felt it was time to give up the ghost after the Kings’ onslaught and didn’t hesitate to inform manager-coach Sid Abel of his decision the morning after the game. The 25-year-old former all-star goaler was demoted by the Red Wings at almost the same moment he was thinking of quitting the game. Detroit had announced that Crozier was being sent down to Fort…
