Toledo Signs Deal With Kings Of NHL
TOLEDO. O. - Jack Kent Cooke may have outdone himself to a certain extent this time. The controversial California sportsman who owns the Los Angeles Kings of the new National Hockey League expansion division, the L.A. Lakers of the National Basketball Association, the L.A. Wolves of the United Soccer League and the Springfield Kings of the American Hockey League, not to mention part interest in Seattle of the American Hockey League and the Washington Redskins of the National Football League, now has a piece of the action in Toledo. Terry Slater's Blades signed a working agreement with the Kings, and when it comes to controversy, Slater can stir up as much as anyone. “We chose Toledo because of the way Slater handles himself'', said Kings' general manager Larry Regan. “We looked over the rest…

Harper, Orr Casualties Of Camp Action
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New York—Montreal game of Friday, September 29 was only an exhibition but it would have been hard to prove this to the 10,616 fans who greeted the Blues triumphant (6-4) return to Broadway. The frenzied denizens of Madison Square Garden picked up the tempo of last season's Stanley Cup semi-final series and the teams responded with a wild penalty filled performance which reminded one of a mid season game. Referee Bill Friday called 26 penalties including eight majors for a total of 96 minutes. Rugged Reg Fleming was charged with 37 minutes including a game misconduct. Fleming tangled with Carol Vadnais in the first period, was soundly thrashed by Ted Harris in the second and outpointed Serge Savard in the third. Other minor altercations included a cross checking…

Wings Sparkle In Camp Play With Crozier Net Standout
DETROIT, Mich. - An impressive defense which limited the opposition to just 11 goals in seven games was singled out by General Manager Sid Abel as the high point of the Red Wings' pre-season campaign. The Wings finished their exhibition play by whipping Montreal, 4-1, at Olympia. The victory gave the team a 5-1-1 won-lost-tied record. Goalies Roger Crozier and George Gardner, who shared net-minding duties, impressed Abel with their performances. Crozier, who played in every contest and went the distance in Detroit's shutout win, 2-0, over the Canadian Nationals, posted a 1.20 goals-against average. Gardner played parts of six games and registered a 2.11 average. Overall, the Wings goals-against average in seven games was 1.57. The team scored 21 goals over the same span, a three-goal average. Abel said he is pleased with the…

After Mikita - Hawks Thin As Rookie Bids To Switch From Defense To Center
CHICAGO, Ill. – Tommy Ivan and Billy Reay probably will get the Black Hawks into something resembling defending champion ship form before the : regular NHL season is too many weeks along. But everytime they appeared to be making strides toward that end during the closing days of training camp, some new crisis would crop up to throw all of their good works back into chaos. Through most of the early exhibitions, Reay had only one line at his disposal that looked as though it might be intact when the season started. That would have been a trio of Jerry Goyer as Red Hay's replacement between Eric Nesterenko and Dennis Hull. Kenny Wharram's refusal to workout without a contract and Doug Mohns' persistent leg injury left Stan Mikita as the only representative of the…
