June Draft Unique In NHL History With 120 Players Eyeing Expansion
MONTREAL, Qtie.— The annual hockey draft, usually little more than a breeze is certain to be a full-blown affair, this year. For the first, and what is likely to be the only time in NHL history, 120 players will be on the move as the six new teams in the expanded league stock up on playing personnel. Further, there'll be no actual charge to the new clubs for drafting players, for the usual $30,000 draft price has been waived in deference to the $2,000,000 investment that each new franchise holder made upon entering the league. Merger Decision Pending; Leafs Transfer Victoria To New Phoenix Setting

The WHL will convene again during the NHL draft meetings in Montreal the first week in June, and again, probably in Seattle, where WHL offices are located, in mid-June. An American League delegation headed up by Jack Butterfield huddled with the WHL brass at length and while no official decision was announced, is has been learned that the two circuits have agreed to…

This was the result of plans announced by the league for the June 6 draft whereby the six new NHL clubs will be stocked with 120 players for the start of the loop's historic expansion program next season. The league declared that the six existing NHL teams must file their protected lists by 5 p.m. Monday, June 5. The lists will be posted for inspection by the six new clubs at 9 a.m. the next morning only and the draft will commence one hour later. ‘That amounts to a one-hour sneak preview of what the new clubs can expect in the way of player talent…
