Pieri Awarded Academic Honor

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Louis A. R. Pieri, nationally prominent sportsman, was accorded one of the highest academic honors when Bryant College, of Providence, Rhode Island, presented him with an honorary Doctor of Science degree at a special ceremony on the school's campus. Pieri, former treasurer and president of the world's champion Boston Celtics basketball team, and President of R. I. Auditorium and the R. I. Reds hockey club, was one of six national business and education leaders feted at a special Bryant convocation. At the convocation, E. Gardner Jacobs, President of Bryant, cited Pieri, saying : “Your business abilities have been acknowledged through numerous awards, including the DuPont Fellowship, and membership in Phi Lambda Upsilon, honorary society.” Pieri was termed “successful businessman, educator and civic leader.”…

Blair Coach Hunting This was late last season in the new San Diego Arena. Wren Blair, the bouncy and enthusiastic gentleman, who is managing the new Minnesota North Stars of the NHL's new expansion division, was bouncing along enthusiastically. “In my opinion,” he said, “a manager has to use his imagination. He has to look for new ways to do things better.” He showed us a tiny tape-recorder, into which he had been dictating his observations while scouting games. “Writing is distracting,” he pointed out. “With this gimmick, I transcribe my notes at my leisure. Merger Decision Pending; Leafs Transfer Victoria To New Phoenix Setting

PORTLAND, Oregon— The official announcement that Toronto's Victoria franchise has been transferred to Phoenix and the unofficial indication that the Western and American Leagues will merge were the most significant developments of the Western League meeting in Portland, May 16-17, under the direction of circuit president Al Leader. As has been the case in recent springs with the annual post-season get-together the main decision reached was to meet again. The WHL will convene again during the NHL draft meetings in Montreal the first week in June, and again, probably in Seattle, where WHL offices are located, in mid-June.
