Bob Breitbard Never Doubted ‘His City’
SAN DIEGO, Calif.— A sports arena in a little “navy town” across the border from Tijuana? A hockey team in a city where the only ice available was for mixed drinks? A $6.5 milllion facility built in 365 days? A major league basketball team for where? These are the typical remarks Robert Breitbard has heard in the 17 months from November, 1965 to March, 1967. If Breitbard was dismayed, he certainly didn’t show it. The odds brought an outraged cry from Montreal’s kindly old coach Toe Blake, who felt that the price was ‘way out of line’ in that it favored Canadiens too heavily. “It’s ridiculous to make us such heavy favorites,” declared Blake. “The Rangers are a good team and have played well against us during the season. The odds should have been closer to even money.” Blake’s reaction was both familiar and understandable… familiar because he reacts the same way whenever Canadiens are made top-heavy choices to win anything, and understandable because he fears that complacency may settle on his players and dull their edge. It’s a legitimate point of view as…
