Blues, Hawks Facing Worry Over Ice Vets

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The big problem confronting National Hockey League coaches entering the playoffs is whether or not their seasoned players can hold up for a few more weeks after a rigorous 70-game schedule. Every NHL coach expresses concern for it is usually the team that manages to remain healthy in the final weeks of the season that exerts the most authority in the Stanley Cup playdowns and walks off with all the marbles. The situation is similar this season. For example, Rangers’ Emile Francis can’t help but wonder If his amazing ‘Thin Man’, Phil Goyette, can stand up to seven or 14 more hockey games. Goyette is one of several New Yorkers operating below par with an injury. Orland Kurtenbach is another. The Hawks’ Billy Reay is worried over the physical condition…

Six Players Facing Off-Season Surgery

BOSTON, Mass. — The National Hockey League season finally ended for the Bruins — and not a moment too soon. Two more weeks of battling from last place hand Coach Harry Sinden might not have had six healthy men to put on the ice. When the Bruins wound up their season with a 5-2 loss to Toronto, six men were on the disabled list and at least three others were playing with assorted ailments that will require surgery before next season. Of course, Teddy Green and Ron Murphy had been out of action for some time. Green with an operation on his left knee and Murphy with a broken bone in his foot.
